They're also really nice and polite. Over the course of several visits, I tried the sirloin special, the coronation chicken, the chicken escalope, and the chicken/bacon/sweet corn sandwiches. I also tried the scotch eggs. My favorite was the coronation chicken, which I'd never had before (I don't think we have it in the States), but everything I tried was tasty and I'd be happy to have all of them again. The sandwiches are pretty reasonably priced at under £6, which is nice for an area where it's easy to spend the same amount on a cup of coffee and a muffin. I've always been in and out of the shop in just a few minutes, even when it's busy. Their prime lunch traffic seems to come around 12:30 and later; it was pretty empty the 1 time I went at 12. I've always been able to pay with my American bank card without any issues. Definitely recommend this place if you need lunch in the area! They also have breakfast, although I've never tried it.

Really great spot for a quick bite, be it lunch or getting a quick fix before meeting up with…read moresomeone or heading home. The food is tasty yet relatively healthy when compared to other fast food options nearby. The decor was also nice - spacious and clean with condiments, utensils and napkins fully stocked for self service. Staff are also nice too. I think it's important to set your expectations. This isn't a boutique high end sushi restaurant in Japan... I honestly wouldn't even call Itsu a sushi restaurant! It's a casual, largely self serve, fast food chain with some sushi on its menu. You can't be expecting a sub £7 sushi box to compare to sushi restaurants which charge that price for a single sashimi or nigiri. I enjoyed Itsu and would gladly visit one of their other chains.

More like a piece of fish on some rice (and no that's not sushi). Real sushi focuses on the type of rice used, the right amount of vinegar on each grain of rice, the moisture level in the rice. The focus on the grip of the chef is immense, as it translates to whether the sushi falls apart or it's too firm. All of these things come together miraculously, and bonded by some wasabi with a gorgeous piece of generous sashimi. That my friend is called sushi. Itsu's sushi was dry, hard, firm. Sashimi was not fresh and started to dis-color. I personally think it's just unfair how London is dominated by all these bad Jap food chains, and ripping the Londonites of great Japanese food experience. We should mourn for that fish even, as it certainly died in vain. Ok I should stop being dramatic. Reality is that we all know if we wanted great Jap food you won't go Itsu, or these equivalent chains. But personally think it felt more like a mock up than real Jap food at all. Not to be harsh, but i don't think consumers should need to pay so much for such quality.

This was the first restaurant we ate at in London in 2017, and our first British fish and chips…read more Poppies was outstanding on both counts. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, but somehow after a six minute wait they found space for us in the back room. 1950s American music played throughout the place, with posters and records of that time period to boot. I assume it's because they opened in 1952 and they have been trapped in time since. The servers were all really nice and gave us cute knotted bendy straws. So the main event. We got the fish and chips of course. The cod and haddock tasted the same but the only noticeable difference to us was that the haddock had a dark layer of skin under the fried layer. Cook's in Menlo Park, CA was slightly better, but Poppies' was still outstanding. We also had the mushy peas to make sure we had mushy peas while in Britain, but they were nothing to write home about. (I think I'm just not a mushy peas fan.) We all had two obligatory spoonfuls and went back to the fish. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Apparently it arrives frozen from some dessert place. We could have used more than a half scoop of melted vanilla ice cream, but overall it was REALLY good. The daughter loved it and insisted she have sticky toffee pudding for her birthday five months later. We had STP three times in a week during our trip and Poppies was maybe slightly better than the rest. In 2017, 5 stars. A visit to Poppies during our 2024 visit, seven years later was a must. This time we sat outside to be COVID cautious on the only outdoor seating available - three sporting even style wooden chairs that fold in when not occupied. (More recent photos show that they've been replaced by benches.) The fish and chips this time was fine but again not better than Cook's. Yes, California might have the edge over an English chippie. Based on my notes we had all haddock which was a good choice. I noticed this time that the sticky toffee pudding was taken out of the fridge and microwaved but it was still yummy. But overall this visit I'd have to give it 4 stars.

Our first real meal in London and while I wasn't greatly impressed, I can say I wasn't disappointed…read more(except dessert but that might just be my American taste buds). The space is small and packed with vintage decor. It definitely has that old-school, classic London fish-and-chips shop feel. Cozy, a little tight, but full of character. I ordered the cod and chips, which most people agree is what you come here for--and I'd agree. The fish was fresh, the batter was crisp without being greasy, and overall it was solid and satisfying. I also tried the calamari and the sticky toffee pudding. Both were just not for me. Not terrible, pudding definitely ain't aligned with my tongue, but I wouldn't order either again. Service was straightforward and efficient; It's not a place you go for lingering, but more of a sit, eat, and enjoy the experience kind of stop. Overall, it's a good fish and chips spot and worth visiting if you're in the area, especially if you want something classic and reliable. I'll continue stopping by when I'm in London but solely sticking to the cod and chips next time.
