I bought a '16 Corvette from Midway Chevrolet in August 2021 with just under 16K miles. Went to the dealer for my first oil change and told them I was experiencing changing temps in my air conditioner. They charged me $380. To diagnose the problem which was to replace both actuators at a price of $4,100 A friend recommended Johnstons Auto and when they checked the car there was NOTHING wrong with the actuator at all. Dwight Johnston suggested A few things that I might try and said if I had anymore trouble to bring it back and they will check the compressor. Everything if fine right now and they wouldn't charge me a cent. Needless to say, I will let all of my friends know of this experience with both companies. Thank you Dwight Johnston. read more

I've taken my cars to Johnston's twice and have had great customer service, upfront clarity on estimate, and clear communication with what is needed for repair. They have been efficient in getting my cars back to me which makes life a lot easier. Haven't had any issues with the work they've done. read more

I was considering going here but had a bad experience with the manager on the phone. I asked her if I could speak with the manager and she said, she was the manager. I have never taken my car anywhere other than Sanderson Ford for 7 years. They are busy for a week, and so I looked up Johnston's. I mentioned hourly and competitor prices. That didn't go well. I'm giving three stars just to be kind because I would hope that someone would be merciful with me in the same way. I'm sure they do great work. read more

Do not take your vehicle to this place for anything other than an oil change, if even that. My truck had a boil-over and I took it to them after changing the thermostat myself and seeing no improvement. They recommended a new water pump for $750+. I agreed. I go to pick up my truck and Mike and Amy at the front desk say "you may or may not make it home, most likely going to need a whole new cooling system." Didn't make it home. Had to bring it back and pay them an additional $900+. Later I notice a leak coming from the top of my gas tank and assume it's the pump, I take it once more and she tell me it's $675 just to drop the tank and diagnose. They find the problem (cracked gasket seal) and fix it and send me on my way $750+ dollars later. A few days go by and my tank is now leaking again and WAY worse than before. I call because they "warranty their work". They bring it in, drop the tank and tell me now I need a whole new gas tank because it's cracked." Amy proceeds to tell my wife that she thinks it looks like a rock jumped up off the freeway and caused the crack in my tank, therefor not being covered under warranty as it is not their fault". $850+ they want again. I asked for pictures to show me the damage and they refused. They were adamant that they "fix things, not break things". I refused to pay without them proving to me that the damage was not due to their shop and they put my broken tank back on and told me to come get my truck. The mechanic circled where the leak was on the tank and it's directly under the strapping where it mounts the tank under the truck, very clearly from the stress of them over-tightening it and attempting to improperly reinstall the tank. No damage from this mysterious magical jumping boulder, just damaged from their incompetent employees. Also the staff is only nice if you are there in a bind and they know they can bend you over on price, as soon as you give push back the customer service and respect goes out the window. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. read more

I have been taking my 2010 Prius to Johnston's since I bought it used. This business was recommended to me by Tom Hines, the leasing agent. I have never gotten anything but superior service, extreme kindness, and the best expertise in town. I can't recommend this place enough. They are incredibly helpful, genuinely honest, and refreshingly affordable. They never try to upsell or overcharge, you always feel like you're in good hands. It's rare to find a shop that truly looks out for you, and I won't take my car anywhere else! read more

Been taking my car to Johnston's Automotive for a couple of years and they never let me down. They always work with me timing-wise, their prices seem fair and everyone is so friendly. Highly recommend them! read more

I was referred to them by a friend and I will be eternally grateful! My dealership told me I needed to have my alternator replaced and were going to charge over $800 which included the price of the part and three hours of service. When I went to Johnston's they charged me the price of the part which was in the same price field as my dealership and one hour of service. They clearly explained an hour was all that was needed to replace an alternator, not three like my dealership tried to charge. I am so thankful for finding a business that is honest and forthcoming with their services and pricing, especially right now when unexpected car expenses are hard. Johnston's now has a new customer and I have no hesitations about bringing my car back for maintenance in the future! Thank you! read more

Johnstons is fantastic fast service extremely fair prices compared to others. both my cars are out of warranty now and I will talk take them nowhere else. they treat my precious Jeep with love. I usually don't waste my time with reviews but this place deserves it. Definitely a five-star experience read more

Johnston's Automotive - Auto Repair Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

This a classic family run business that is ran the right way. I have heard good things about Johnston's for years on nextdoor. Recently, I was sick of traveling to the dealer for an oil change so I decided to give them a try. I called and they fit me in early the next morning. We dropped off the car and it was ready within a couple hours, and the pricing was in line with their estimate. The car is a Mercedes, so oil changes are expensive. Johnston's came in at least $200 lower than the dealer. They had great communication during the service, and their shop is very neat and presentable. You can tell they take pride in their business. Overall, I am pleased with their service and will return. read more

We have an 2001 Isuzu Rodeo and we are going to be driving it to Rocky Point, so I wanted someone to look it over and tell me if anything needed to be fixed. I called 25th Street Automotive and their exact words were, "we don't deal with cars like that because they are too time consuming." I called Johnston's Automotive and they said that absolutely they would look at it and for $45-$50 they would go over everything and do a diagnostic of what all might need to be done. I took it in the next day and Sherry called me in about an hour with the diagnosis and estimate. I felt like it was very thorough and reasonable. I had them do some of the work and they didn't end up charging me for the diagnostic. We are going to do some of the other less important things in stages. Dwight is even going to figure out how to attach my fan shroud that has come loose and they don't make any more. I appreciate that. They don't seem to be hurting for business, but I absolutely do recommend them. read more

Last week I was up in Phoenix from Tucson for work, and right as I was about to drive back the plastic sheath under my Prius came loose from the car and was dragging on the road. Terrifying! In a panic I tried a couple of shops just to get the car back in a condition to drive it back safely. First couple mechanics were booked for the day, but when I arrived at Johnston's they were able to take a look, and the kind mechanic Ricky took care of everything swiftly and with a smile. They were genuine lifesavers and set me up for a pain-free drive back down to Tucson. I'm forever grateful -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

Everyone here is very nice and respectful. I took my car here and they couldn't fix it. They did work on it but couldn't figure it out so sent me somewhere else. But I got a full refund! Now that's an honorable place to come. read more

I forgot to do this after my wife got her car back a few weeks ago, but I just remembered last night. We took our 2005 Accord in for a checkup, oil, etc. We also asked them to fix the driver side door. It wouldn't unlock with the fob or from the inside switch. It also wouldn't open with the key and my wife was just leaving it unlocked since it got so bad. I was afraid she'd get stuck in an emergency. Anyway, I was "prepared' to hear hear it was going to be 2, 3, $500 or more. Anyway, they called later with an update and guess what - No Charge!!! The mechanic found debris build up in the lock mechanism and cleaned it out for FREE! Did you hear that? FREE!!! I've always trusted these guys, but Wow! They're the best! Probably been with them well over 10 years and get happier every time! read more

Great place, great people, honest and fair. Reminds me of how mechanics use to be back in the day!

This place is amazing! I finally found a good honest place to bring my car for service and repairs. I have had a few places that were just not good with their work, or just to expensive. I totally recommend Johnston's Auto Shop! I was totally amazed at how clean it was and how good they are at fixing cars. I have never had my car run so good. So if your looking for a good place to go for auto service, don't hesitate to give them a shot, you won't regret it. read more

I brought my jeep here for a check engine light and misfiring engine. I didn't do proper research to the first shop I took it to and they ended up having it over 6 weeks and still wasn't fixed. I brought it here and they were able to find and fix the issue in less than 4 hours. It runs great and I'm confident that the work was done right. My experience with everyone was very positive and very informative. I wish I'd not panicked when it initially happened and just brought it here to begin with. read more

I heard nothing but great reviews both locally by word of mouth and online about Johnston's Automotive. They definitely hold up to what's been said. They are extremely honest, well priced, and what I liked most was they explained every detail when an issue is diagnosed - which isn't very common in my experience. I've had shops tell me something needs to be done with no explanation, other then let's fix it, here's the price. With Johnston's they gave me possible options and explanations. They even saved me about 300$ by not doing something I assumed needing fixing. Cheri is also a great person to deal with. She's very helpful and didn't mind my millions of questions, and was also very on top of keeping me updated with my truck. Y'all are the best! read more

Tl;dr: $120 to run diagnostics on your car. Called and harassed me about my bad yelp review because I felt like I was overcharged. I went to Johnston's looking to have my check engine light checked. I knew basically what was wrong by going to Autozone. Johnston's charged me $120 to run diagnostics and wanted $1000-1200 to do the repair. I called another shop with five stars on yelp and was quoted $375. I am leaving a bad review because I felt like I was overcharged. The people at Johnston's decided to call and harass me about the review. Basically, their complaint was that my review was inaccurate. However, the employee was very obviously not interested in winning my business back, and, instead, seemed to be trying to intimidate me into taking my review down. I do not recommend this business. read more

Dwight Johnston and his crew are top notch! My husband and I were on our way to Prescott around 11:45am and as we were backing out of parking from breakfast, our front tires both klunked and were jolting.. in drive it was no problem, only in reverse. We were on 24th street headed home as we didn't want to risk the safety..we saw this place driving by. We stopped and within minutes of the crew backing up, they found the problem..a bolt came off the left front caliper and was digging into the wheel when in reverse, flipping it back into the wheel..it was ready to fall off! Also, they found a broken stud. Within 50 minutes they had us on our way! They had to get a part locally but less than an hour we were fixed. I said "Thankyou Lord for a fix that didnt cost thousands" Thankyou Johnstons for a surprisingly wonderful repair experience!! Arnie and Kelley read more

After a particularly long day, my poor husband's Scion tC started throwing some weird electrical symptoms that seemed to indicate a dying alternator. He stopped at an O'Reilly on the way home to get the battery and alternator tested, and the guy assured him that both were in great shape and that the likely culprit was the starter. Since that made absolutely no sense, he limped it to another O'Reilly, who gave him another jump (yeah...not the starter). The Scion sputtered to a stop a few miles down the road, and conveniently in front of Johnston's. Fate, right? Thanks to you Yelp ninjas, we felt safe leaving the keys in the lockbox having never even spoken to these guys. In the morning, Shari, the owner's wife and receptionist, didn't mind corresponding with my husband via email (he has a job that makes it difficult to step out for a personal call). They had the alternator replaced same-day, as promised, and when we came to pick up the car, Shari spoke about their pride in running an ethical, trustworthy establishment. That was clear from their professionalism and, frankly, compassion for how stressful an unexpected vehicle repair can be. We'll definitely be back to Johnston's. read more

This is the nicest mechanic shop I've been to in Arizona. Not only is it clean and staffed with expert professionals, but the service is timely, cost-effective, and kind! Don't take your car here if you have an emergency. They charge more than the dealership.

I HIGHLY recommend this place. I had some bad work done at another repair shop and this place made it right. I did pay for some of the repair but they didn't charge me for all of it to be replaced and done correctly. Super honest and caring people. I can't thank them enough. read more

I have lived in Phoenix for 20 years and drove by Johnston's all the time but never thought to take my car in for repairs. I had a friend who recommended Johnston's. I even had previously purchase some parts and they let me bring those in to finish the job, wow! Recently, the check engine light was blinking and beeping. I immediately thought to contact Johnston's and got an early Monday morning appointment to figure out the problem. They called within a few hours of their robust testing and provided me options. Their patience and courteous demeanor on the phone is outstanding and these mechanics are exceptionally top-notch--they know their stuff. I made a decision and within a couple of hours, by noon, I had the car back running smoothly. I feel they are very honest with their customers and they want their customers to feel happy with the service! I sure am! Fast, friendly, upfront, trustworthy, and all around great people. The quality and service they provide is unparalleled to any other provider. Some dingus at jiffy lube told me I had an engine oil leak and that my car would break if I didn't take immediate action. Johnston's reassured me that my car was fine and that the tiny leak was a non issue and only something to monitor. I'll never take my vehicles anywhere else again. read more
