John & his entire family are part of my family. His wife makes THE best Greek dessert BAKLAVA straight out of her kitchen. Super flaky and just the right amount of sweet!!! They've been in our neighborhood for decades but just discovered their deliciousness when they moved right across from us. Now we literally crawl out of bed and walk around the corner for THE BEST BREAKFAST in Dallas. I have yet to come across any other PANCAKES like theirs. What a gem! I wouldn't have expected to find the best proper diner in such an unassuming spot on Lowest Greenville. We stopped in for breakfast and ordered pretty standard fare. I was shocked at how inexpensive two meals with coffee and orange juice was, and they were delivered to our table as quickly as it took to order. My wife is from New York, and has often said her biggest issue with Dallas is the lack of a quality inexpensive diner. When we walked into John's, she looked at me and said "this is the place." We'll be coming back to John's often, and are so happy to have found such a nice little spot! read more

This place is famous for what? Had to stand in line at a counter to order. Cannot or not supposed to get a table till you do so. Yes it's packed. Call your number when your food order is ready. Have to get up and get your own everything; coffee, silverware, napkins. Food is just ok at best. It's not bad but it's not worth the price. Four breakfast specials and four drinks. $50. You can tip if you want. But for what? The only thing that saves this place is their location. There's nothing else around it to get breakfast down on lower Greenville Ave. And that area is sketchy anyway. Be sure to lock your car and hide your things. Not a good choice. read more

John's new location doesn't yet have the atmosphere of the old one, but the food is thankfully exactly the same. While most people think of John's as a breakfast place, I go there for lunch. The burgers are some of the best in Dallas. The club sandwich is top-notch - don't be put off by the price, because it includes your fries, whereas the burger prices don't. Gyros are Greek cafe style (cooked on a grill, not a spit), but very good, especially with grilled onions. John's is family owned and run - at any time, either John or his wife or daughter will be at the register and watching the kitchen. Besides adding to the charm of the place, it guarantees complete consistency on the food. I give it one star because the food is lovely, the breakfast special is one of the best in town, and their biscuits and gravy are to die, but the attitude one gets at the counter would make one want to turn around and haul ass outta there. We used to go here almost every Sunday after church. It was good and we liked that it was local. Service was always brusque, bordering on rude at times, but fine. By service I mean the folks at the counter where they take your order. I assumed John's wife and maybe daughter man it. The food was OK and certainly keenly priced. We gave up on it though and are taking a break because of the noise level, the SCREAMING of your number when one's order is ready, the cheek to jowl seating and the very charming north side tables where you are treated to someone's butt in your face while they are in line to order. We also tired of the regulars who took up a whole booth for themselves and chatted on the phone, read the paper and were settled in for the morning while we stood around hoping for a table to open up before our food was ready. There is also a sign saying order before you sit down-but it's dog eat dog with plenty of parties sending a scout to grab a table and letting someone else order for them. In short, the whole experience on Sundays was more like an episode of Survivor than getting breakfast. It's probably better during the week but it finally got to be too much on the weekends. A dear friend who has since moved to Boston recommended this hole in the wall on Greenville Avenue to me. You wouldn't know it by my posh facade, but I'm a big fan of the greasy spoon, and John's is an excellent example of what every g.s. should aspire to be - quick, friendly, tasty and cheap. Thus, I am faced with a dilemma - now that I know about John's, I'm reluctant to share the wealth. A place like this makes you wanna keep a secret. My companion and I rolled into John's about 11 a.m. on a weekday for a late breakfast/early lunch. Our first impression was that this tiny place was squeaky-clean, from the linoleum floors to the vinyl booths lining the walls on our left and right. We proceeded to the back counter to place our order - my pal went for the Combo Omelette and I had a cheeseburger and fries. My antennae are always up when it comes to finding great burgers, and I noticed that the word "Hamburgers" is actually on the sign out front of John's - a very good omen. As my companion pondered his beverage order, a gray-haired, mustachioed gentleman sitting at the counter tipped his newspaper and suggested "Ouzo...?" with a wink (and a thick Greek accent). Once we began to chuckle, the old man joined in, along with the man taking our order. I don't know if this was an impromtu performance, or their standard "new customer" joke, but we were charmed nonetheless. Our food arrived in mere moments and soon we were tucking into some solid diner-style fare. My mate's omelette was a monster, filling 3/4 of a dinner plate, and it contained a little of everything - cheese, meats and veggies of several varieties. Alongside were some nice-looking hash browns featuring a respectable dark brown-to-creamy white potato ratio. My burger was a solid "B+", earning points for juiciness, generous amounts of cheese and toppings and a toasted bun (a personal requirement for anything above a "C" rating). I can't wait to return and try some of the Greek-inspired dishes on John's menu - Gyros, anyone? Considering the crowd that began to gather as our early lunch wrapped up, however, I'd suggest hitting John's at off-peak hours. See why I didn't want to let you in on my new little secret? I was headed to Ali Baba and it turned out to be closed, so we walked into John's, expecting a mediocre-at-best sort of meal. I knew I screwed up last time! Had I known what I missed out on I would have lost sleep over it. I was ready for this update to go up a star, and I knew it was there. Ever go somewhere and ask for a suggestion from a server and know almost immediately you sunk the battleship and it's too late? Well that's what I did a few months ago with the Patty Melt school burger. I think I've finally outgrown those days : D I'd rather have an average burger with cheese than a bunch of greasy onions on top of greasy meat. Just the name - patty melt? It just doesn't sound as good as it used to, but I remember them being so good as a kid. Moving on and growing up a tad ;) What did I get this am? What I have been asking myself to get for a long time. I finally listened to myself and ordered the mysterious sounding Gyro Omelet. Now where else have you heard of such a bright idea? I've never heard of it, and why I haven't tried it prior to today is the bigger question? Especially considering I love Gyros, lamb, cheese, eggs, tomatoes, and onions. Well, my retardation did not get in the way today even though I feared less flavor since I have a cold. Wrong, so wrong. I tasted love at first bite and asked for a side of Tazazaziki ;). No strange looks at all, and it seemed natural to me. I had hashbrowns instead of bisquits or toast for my side and ordered them extra crispy. They did a great job getting them just right after the last experience I had with the Hash B's. I can't deal with undercooked bacon or hashbrowns. I tried to determine what the sweet taste of this cheese could be, but I just enjoyed it and didn't feel like moving from my comfy booth. The only movement was hand to mouth goodness. I won't do anything differently next time unless I get a side of pita bread and see what it tastes like in a pocket? I'm guessing this is possible since they do Gyro's as well. If it's just as good next time I might have to do a double dog update and high 5 John. It's rare that I go out to eat alone, but this is no place to worry about looking like you have no friends or sickly. I so enjoyed my coffee, reading the paper, and sitting Indian style in a booth to myself. I was lucky it wasn't packed right before 9am and didn't feel the least bit rushed or in the way. That's a great way to start a cold Friday with a cold knowing you might be in for the weekend. It certainly spiked my mood and I have seriously felt better since : D read more

This place is wonderful and I feel like I'm at home when I dine in. John makes you feel welcomed every time he also recognizes me and says hello even if I haven't came in awhile. it was a sunday morning, too early to head to a brunch place... so we found our way to this little diner (thank you yelp app!!!) the menu is full of several breakfast choices. and i have to say that every plate that passed us looked DELISH. i got the breakfast special: eggs, sausage, hasbrowns , biscuits and gravy and topped it off with some coffee. alright, let me break this down for you real quick. 1. the lady at the counter did not smile the entire time. yeah, it was 10 am and there was a line of 7 people behind us, but at least crack a smile! 2. the food was great diner food. i am a fan of biscuits and gravy- john's will hit the spot when i am having that craving, but i have to say that the biscuits were just a tad bit "roll like" to me. I like them a bit dense... but they were nice and soft and buttery. also, the gravy was a little loose for me. but like i said, it will satify my craving. 3. it is serve your own coffee. i actually don't mind going to get my own, but the coffee pot was located on the other side of the cash register so if i wanted to grab a refill, i had to cut through the line of people... not very easy to do with lots of people in a small space. (good cup of joe though) 4. if you don't grab a booth, you gotta sit at the long table that runs down the middle of the diner. i actually like this because you never know who you'll sit next to. you might be near a "regular" that could give ya some tips about the joint or at least have good coversation with some strangers. i plan on making another trip there for lunch... i've heard great things about the roast beef sandwich and gyros (yeah, i got that tip from the regular sitting next to me at the long table) read more

This place has the Ma and Pa home style feel to the restaurant and it's an awesome place to eat. I always get the breakfast special with scramble eggs, bacon, toast, and hash browns. The eggs are really good, along with the bacon. The hash browns have a little kick to it which I like but I know some people may not enjoy that. My favorite is the ham/cheese/onion omlette w/ awesome fried potatos and a side of Biscuits.. They have cold picante sauce u can order on the side which I pour on the omlettle//mmmm good! Compared to other parts of the country, the diner remains a relatively underdeveloped and undercelebrated institution in Texas. Particularly in Dallas, where there is a relentless quest for the novel, the small family restaurant with affordable prices can go unnoticed. While this lowest part of Greenville has gone from riches to rags to riches again, John's has steadily weathered the tides of change, faithfully serving traditional diner fare to a faithful flock of customers. It even has that touch-of-Greek that puts it firmly in the tradition of great diners. As far as I know it has moved only once in my lifetime, but it's still unassuming, inexpensive, and in a strip mall on Greenville, complete with ceiling tiles, artificial plants, and wall memorabilia. My boyfriend and I always joke that we moved to Lower Greenville to have all these nice, trendy restaurants to choose from, but we always end up coming to John's! This place is awesome! It's a small mom and pop diner that always seems busy when we come. They are extremely reasonably priced and they are very nice! I love fancy food, but I have a weakness for burgers. Their bacon burger is my favorite. My daughter got a pancake from them and they made a face on it with batter, which I thought was sweet. ("MOMMY, I ATE THE EYES! HE CAN'T SEE NOW!") The best part is we can walk here in less than a minute. The worst part is they're not open at night. For those nights we get off super late, we'd love to have a 24 hour hole in the wall with delicious but cheap food at our convenience. read more

Who comes to John's and orders a Greek salad with pita bread for lunch?! I do!!!!!!! I was in a hurry and had errands to run so I played it safe although the plates with steaks and mashed potato's were all calling my name. I was extremely satisfied the gyro meat, it was juicy and tender, the lettuce and veggies were plentiful and the pita bread was warm, just the way I like it. The feel is different, like "rural Texas" different, it took me out of Dallas and especially out of Lower Greenville. You immediately know who the seasoned vets are if you happen to visit when they are there which I assume is every day seeing as to how the restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner, which gives them enough time to talk about everything from the French and Indian War to how Bush did NOT steal the election, I came in on the later topic. Needless to say I will visit this place again and order a Real" meal and I will give you an update on the food and the latest topics of discussion ;) read more

Fast service, great food. Not at all a fancy place, but a great place for a casual breakfast.

Dropped by John's for road trip eats. Ordered a Muffaletta, a Stallion, and a cannoli. Still debating which sandwich was better. Had I known how big the Muffaletta would be I would have only ordered that and would have never known how great their Stallion sub was. The cannoli was fresh and delicious. John's Cafe is solid, no frills and gets the job done. i am surprised that it is not as "greasy spoon" as i had thought it may be. you order at the counter, sit and your food is brought to you. which isnt a big deal, but it is nice to sit down in a diner and have an interesting waitress talk to you and fill up your coffee. i had the gyro omelet. it is very good and i wonder why you dont see this more often. the flavors all worked together nicely. the gyro meat is not from a spit rotisserie (where it's carved or shaved off) but rather the packaged, evenly pre-sliced variety. which i usually detest in a gyro sandwich, but it gets by fine here. i also enjoyed the egg, it was folded over well and was fluffy. the hash browns are homemade, which i love. i always ask for "well done" hash browns anywhere i go and here they came out perfect. the biscuits are homemade as well. large and fluffy. i would recommend ordering them instead of toast, b/c the toast is just the run of the mill stuff, nothing great. my dining partner had the chef's choice omelette, which is always a good choice b/c they hook you up. the bacon, ham and sausage that accompanied it were excellent. they were thick cuts of meat and fried up well. the coffee is horrendous. i realize that no-frills diners everywhere still brew folgers or cain's. but it's putrid, burnt, watery and just gross. i still drank several cups b/c you deal w/ it. but it's kind of a shame to start your morning w/ a great breakfast and have bad coffee. (i think this is a larger dining/culinary issue affecting our country. we've obviously grown leaps and bounds in our taste for the stuff now the diners need to follow suit. not talking about espressos and baristas, just good, decent coffee. there are some quality roasters now in dallas and then Cafe Brazil, BuzzBrews, etc. it CAN be had.). hungover or not, John's is a good option and has great prices. read more

I live in Frisco (commiserations welcomed) but as it turned out I was heading down to the 'Rally to Save the American Dream' on Feb 26 in south Dallas so I thought I'd check it for myself.
