This has all the makings of one of my favorite types of breakfast restaurant. One off with lots of character. We used Yelp to locate this place prior to out visit to the Reunion Tower. Here you line up to place your order and then find a table to sit at. The system seems to work well. There were no tables available when we arrived, but by the time we placed our order a couple had opened up. I had the Gyro omelette with hash browns and biscuits. It was wonderful but it is not on the Weight Watcher's menu. Large portions and full calories. But, so worth the splurge. Nothing that a few extra minutes at the gym won't solve. My wife had the Migas. She said they were a bit greasy but otherwise good. If I am in the area I would certainly have this as a "go to" place for comfort food! "Number 17?! Number 17!?" A man with graying hair sitting at the corner table raised his hand proudly and claimed his much-awaited breakfast. I felt like I was at a jail cafeteria with fellow prisoners waiting for our numbers to be called, signaling each of our turn to get some grub. I was a little culture-shocked; not the usual IHOP or Denny's that's for sure. This is a no-frills, straightforward breakfast place: food is simple, tasty, quick, and inexpensive. It's busy and acoustics aren't that great, but breakfast is so darn reasonable here that you just learn to appreciate everything about John's Cafe. Admittedly, the food itself is nothing to rave about, but as I said, it's pretty good taking everything else (price) into account. Will definitely be back! read more

LOVED this place. It's kind of a hole in the wall and the seating is community style (i.e. long cafeteria style tables that you can share with complete strangers) BUT that's what made it fun. I had the greatest convo with this 70 year-old Vietnam Vet over some great biscuits and grits. Totally dinner food. It's more home cookin' than Denny's but not as greasy as the Waffle House. It's small and has a nice feel. The staff is very friendly. You order at the counter. When your order is ready they call your number, you get your food. There are obviously regulars around reading the paper. It's cute. No patio. read more

John's, what can I say -- great to be back on Lower Greenville. Although the original location was 10x better than the current location but the food is still right-on. I love John's for breakfast or lunch. Breakfast is always spot on no matter what you get eggs, bacon, pancakes, hash browns... Lunch, any of the weekday lunch specials are awesome; hot open face, chopped steak, CFS, you can't go wrong. If you don't want to go with the lunch special, you can throw down an awesome grilled chicken sandwhich or bugers are perfect as well. read more

My favorites here at Johns are the the bacon & cheese omelette, the frugally priced special, & burgers. The oatmeal is huge & good when you want to go the non greasy route. Be kind and sit at the community tables if its just 2 of you & it's busy. I still kind of miss the old location a little more north on Greenville. And its seems John isn't a boisterous in yelling out people numbers but I guess I'm a little less boisterous too. read more

Disclaimer: This review is based solely on their breakfast, and because I gave Char-Bar 4 stars, I had to give John's 3 stars. The eggs were good, I asked for "medium" bacon, and they cooked it perfectly. I don't like my bacon too crispy! The coffee was pretty good, but I do wish they had other sweetener options than just regular sugar and sweet'n low. I wasn't a fan of the hash browns. They were kinda mushy and bland. My friend ordered biscuits and gravy, and they were amazing. I could have just eaten the gravy with a spoon. It definitely made me want to come back and try their lunch. Oh, one thing that John's definitely has on Char-bar is the fact that they take credit cards. In fact, that's how I ended up here after completely forgetting that I didn't have any cash! read more

This a decent little joint that might be a good choice for a burger, gyro or breakfast. It's local, been around for a good while and they garden some of their own produce. To me it falls into the greasy spoon diner category in terms of atmosphere and food (the food is a little better than that monicker, I suppose), but the prices are just a little too presumptuous for what the place was for me. Honestly, getting a three star review isn't a bad thing. It just mean that's its A-ok but nothing more. If you're in the area and need some breakfast, stop on in. Oh man! This is a good one! If you're down for a GREAT breakfast and don't pay attention to the frills or fanfare or the calories and are comfortable with a diner like atmosphere, then you need to try John's Cafe! Thanks to a fellow "Yelper" (Norman) - I tried the gyro omelet, wow! The perfect size, generous mixed with red and green bell peppers, onions and cheese. The gyro meet was delicious. That was crazy good and just for additions I tried a side of sausage. Excellent. Now I don't know about you but I'm big on hash browns, diner style hash browns, and it has to be cooked just right. Crispy but soft. That golden brown color, could be slightly darker but still crisp. Man, that was "on the money." So - overall, price was great, portions...perfect. Overall experience...definitely will be going back and became an instant fan. Thanks John for the great meal and for bringing us our food! This was my favorite breakfast joint during my whole stay in Dallas. I always came here after the morning rush so it was never busy but still had a few locals scattered throughout the dining area. When you come here you order & pay first at the back counter, then you sit down and the food is brought to you. The owner has been in this business for a long time and recognizes old customers. This place isn't a michelin starred place probably because maybe some cola-cola plastic glasses are a little corroded near the top rim but who cares, it's breakfast and the food is fantastic! Omelets are the way to go. When I first walked in, I could hear a cook in the back scrambling eggs in a metal pan with a fork. That sound shows that they're using authentic eggs, not carton-eggs, and using mother's method as well. The omelets themselves are super fluffy, not overstuffed with cheese, not over priced, and the homefries are as good as you'll ever get homefries. read more

Fast service and food was served as soon as it was cooked. The chicken fried steak was one of the best I've ever had. It was a thicker cut than usual and held together as it was more like a steak. This is one of the best breakfast joints in Dallas. Every time I come through Dallas, this is my go-to breakfast joint 1. The food has always been on point. The biscuits are fluffy, the gravy is great, and the chicken fried steak is some of the best I've had. 2. Everyone who works here is incredibly nice. I always get at least two "thank yous" as I'm walking out of the door. 3. The food comes out real quick, usually within 6 minutes, it's pretty impressive given how busy the place is. 4. I got to visit this little diner and I am so happy that I did. This place was so cozy. It felt like a bunch of regulars would come there every day and They would know their names and remember their orders. The owner working the grill showing that he loves his establishment. Gotta say, I love the REAL breakfast places. The ones that charge normal prices, and serve delicious normal food. They don't try to reinvent the wheel... John's does just that. It's a simple cafe that serves awesome food. The pancakes and eggs were fresh, the bacon was crispy, and the environment made me feel right at home. The attitude of the staff seemed happy, and although they do yell out your number when it's ready, they're not mean or rude about it. As far as location? This is one of my favorite breakfast places in the city. It's easily accessible on lower Greenville, although you might have to park in the CVS parking next door. The line moves quickly and I've never waited more than 5 minutes for a table. I almost always order the falafel omelette and won't eat again until dinner. Not only filling but delicious. It melts on your tongue. Anytime someone from out of town visits me I take them there and like to leave them with a feeling that they got a home cooked meal that John made himself (even though he probably didnt). read more

You want a diner style restaurant that's clean, friendly, fast, good portions, and inexpensive? This is IT. John's Cafe has been a weekend breakfast go-to for me for about ten years and they continue to deliver. The whole short-order menu is done right w/o any weaknesses but the "breakfast special" (two eggs your way, ham, bacon or sausage, hash browns and toast or biscuit is one of the best deals in town at $5.65. Their standard coffee is remarkably good too and bottomless ($1.25). Seriously, a big plate of good food cooked to order and a bottomless cup of coffee for less than $10?!?! It can get busy with the after-church crowd on a Sunday but even when super crowded I get through the line quickly and always manage to find a good place to sit. So don't sweat the "crowded" comments... it always works out. On top of it all, the crowd is super friendly... nobody will bother you but if you ask to share a table you'll likely get a warm welcome. Don't let the old strip mall fool you. The food is great! We've lived walking distance to this place for a year and were always looking for a good breakfast place. It's a dive "diner" type atmosphere and it cost us $25.40 for two breakfast dishes and a coke, but good! There is no wait staff. You order at the counter, you pour your own coffee, carry any drinks to your table and get your silverware etc yourself.
