I had the best time at Johnny's recently. A friend and I made reservations to eat there before catching a show at Proctor's. We shared the Jo Jo Special. It consists of lobster tail, shrimp, clams and mussels in fra diavolo sauce over pasta. Our helpful server said the Jo Jo Special was meant to be shared. We thought it was an amazing Italian dish. I also had a delicious espresso martini. We were quite full. We had no room for dessert though the couples sitting next to us had rave reviews for the chocolate cake. Perhaps next time. In addition to the wonderful meal, I liked the ambiance. The restaurant is huge. We sat at a table right up front. The red and white checked tablecloths are classic. The large bar and decor harken to a different era. The art and images on the walls celebrate the Capital Region's history. The photos along the bar pay tribute to former service men and women from the region. I also liked the gracious and efficient wait staff. They were so welcoming. They were also very much aware that we had a show to catch. Even though Proctor's is just across the street, they made every effort to see to it that we were happy and fed in a timely manner. My husband and I got seated right away despite no reservations at 6 on a busy Saturday night. All employees we encountered were friendly and professional. The ambiance is largely what you come here for; Fully immersive of an authentic Italian feel. I got the margarita with salt which was strong and tasted house made vs premade bottled marg mix. I had the lobster bisque, which was yummy and a great price comparing to other restaurants in the area. For my entree, I had the filet mignon with roasted potatoes and green beans and all was delicious. My husband had arancini and chopped salad with added shrimp. We have been to Johnny's many times over the years and the food is always really good. I do think it's a little expensive for what it is, but obviously we are still willing to pay it. They have a decent dessert menu as well. The staff is always fun and friendly. read more

We went to Johnny's for my wife's birthday dinner. The food was delicious. We started off with the Tomato Bruschetta as an appetizer. First of all there was a bug in the balsamic. Then our food came out and my wife threw up in the restaurant. We both spent the night very ill with stomach issues. We left behind two full plates and drinks. We paid quickly because my wife wanted to leave so she wouldn't continue to vomit in the restaurant and assumed that Johnny's was at the very least a reputable business and would make it right and refund us later. But of course not! James, a manager, insinuated that we didn't get sick from the food. My wife is a nurse, so medical diagnoses from a restaurant manager is not appreciated or heeded. They offered us a gift card for less than half of what we spent. We obviously refused. James told us the owner said "forget about it then" after we refused. A reminder why we are no longer Mallozzi patrons. They are as intelligent and customer friendly as they are accepting of minorities. read more

I loved this place Sat at the bar with my daughter before a show at Proctors, so we decided to only do apps. Well, for 2 people there was so much food in the 2 apps that we were plenty full. Very nice bartenders, man&woman, busy hustling & we got the Orange Blossom drink that was to die for. Calamari!!!! One of the freshest&best I've had in a while, so great. Also got their nachos without sausage, the chips were wonton-like fried pasta, large with all the fixings, also have never had them that way, it was so delicious. Delicioso! Place is cozy and resembles an "old time" Italian place with the neon red lights and dim lighting. Could imagine some cutie mafioso chats taking place in a back corner. For starters, bread is awesome.. crust is crunchy and inside is doughy, perfect for some salty butter! Apps- Caesar salad and Johnny's wings. Awesome flavors and done well. We did have to wait sometime for them to come out but our server explained a larger order went in right before ours, no worries. Dinner came out timely following apps. Pasta carbonara and eggplant napoletana. Eggplant was crispy and thin, pesto was lite and garlicky. Great dish. Carbonara was flavorful and hot, would like to see some thick pancetta vs what was served but just a baby detail. Too stuff for dessert but the options on the cart all look out of this world. Staff was kind and helpful, they were attentive and we did not have to wait or look around for someone when we were in need of something during the meal. We started by splitting a dessert - a large slice of black velvet cake and then an order of calamari. The food was good - the dessert was great. The City of Schenectady has designated motorcycle parking slots nearby - one of the few municipalities that has them. Proctor's theater is almost directly across the street. We went on a Saturday night (when there were no shows playing,) and there was ample auto and motorcycle parking available. read more

We love Johnny's restaurant! The ambience is really nice and cozy. Delicious appetizers! Lovely freshly made pasta; I'm a big fan of the tagliatelle. The excellent desserts are from Villa Italia so you get to support two amazing local business with one meal out. Service is always great; we try to get seated in JoJo's section when we go as he is top-notch. I mentioned him previously as well. He goes way above and beyond to make sure you have a wonderful experience. He's extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I just cannot say enough good things about him and this restaurant. So my wife, daughter and I were seeing a show in Schenectady NY. A fried recommend Johnny's. We called and made a reservation, so easy, such nice people on the phone I couldn't wait to try the place. The ambiance was great, the seating was spaced out perfectly, we did not feel like we were on top of each other. The service was amazing and helpful with the menu for a first timer. We had salad to start, the my wife and daughter had the chicken parm. They said it was very good. It had a sausage flavor to it. I had the pork chop. Very different than I expected. I really liked it. The potatoes were to die for. Perfectly cooked and a little crispy on the bottoms. Very nice. The desert was also really good. Please see the photos attached. Stopped here while traveling for work. It's conveniently located across the street from the Hampton so it's an ideal dinner spot if you like Italian food. There's ample outdoor seating when the weather permits. Staff were helpful and friendly. A little pricey for my taste, but the food was good. Went to Johnnys with my wife and grandsons on a Saturday. Seated us at a high top across from the bar which was fine. The kids were happy there watching the action. We had a 6pm rez but arrived about 545. We were immediately seated. Our waitress was very good. We ordered a couple of apps - lobster bisque and mozzarella sticks which were actually flat and very good. For dinner we ordered rigatoni bolognese, chicken parm and chicken scapariello all of which were good portions, served hot and tasty. Very disappointed with our meals. Calamari was delicious, but it all went down hill from there. My Chicken Marsala was downright Horrible, (pictured). No flavor at all, no rich brown sauce as advertised. tasteless. Dish was served room temperature. My wifes seafood special dish was just ok. Our friends had the veal parm, they were unimpressed, very little pasta with it and they said the sauce was bitter. Service was good. Came in on a cold quiet Tuesday night. Plenty of seating, very cool old school Italian theme. Lots to choose from on the menu. Met a work colleague so we decided to split some apps. Started with the arancini and bruschetta. Not bad, definitely enjoyed the arancini better. Bruschetta was just ok, nothing special and I think I tasted onions, which I hate and who puts that on Bruschetta. Onto the entrees, I opted for the meatballs and sausage, Italian place so you have try it. A huge plate probably enough for two people. The sauce was good not great, I think more spice was needed. My colleague opted for the chicken part, he enjoyed it. Again his portion was huge, probably for two. The cheesecake was really good! When in NY right?! Amazing actually and highly recommended. Generous portions of hearty Italian food. I went with three friends and we were all able to find something we really liked. Service was good, server was attentive but didn't hover. Our order was taken promptly and drinks were refilled as soon as they got low. All of our food came right on time from drinks through dessert. We ate in the bar/entry section which was busy but not so loud we were unable to have a conversation. The people watching was first rate! In town for a work trip but have been to Johnnys many times before. Love this restaurant! It's a crowd favorite to stop in here before a show at Proctors and grab a bite and a drink. We did not have a reservation and there was a show at 730 but we were able to get some seats at the bar while we waited for a table for 6. Only took about an hour which was not bad at all. For appetizers ordered the calamari and the Italian nachos. Both were delicious! Italian nachos may have been one of my favorite appetizers I have ever had. The combination of the Italian cheese sauce and the fried pasta as chips were perfection. Main course I ordered Chicken Cacciatore which also was delicious. No leftovers that's for sure! Pasta was perfectly cooked, chicken was juicy and the portion sizes were beyond fair for the price. An awesome little area off Jay street and right next to Proctors Theatre, Johnnys is the perfect spot for a date night or just any night you're looking for a high quality meal in Schenectady. read more

It's difficult to believe that it has been over five years since we last dined at Johnny's. Maybe I overlooked or didn't feel the need to update my previous review somewhere along the way. Well, Johnny's was not even our intended destination on this outing. We had planned on going to the Italian Festival in Schenectady's Little Italy. Finding a parking place was a chore and it turned out we ended up having to walk by the Greek Festival which was also going on over the same weekend. With the aroma wafting out of the Greek church we felt the need to see if we might want to change our dining plans. But alas, there was a very, VERY long line of people waiting to get to the one stand that was serving up plates of hot Greek meals. So on to the Italian Festival it was. At the Italian Festival it was almost impossible to move among the crowd in the street. And of course there was a long line at EVERY food stand. This was not my idea of an enjoyable dinner. So off to Johnny's where the only seating available without a reservation was at the bar. But we enjoy eating at the bar so it was not a problem. Starting with a pint of local Mad Jack Lager ($7) for me and a Peach Old Fashion ($12) for my wife, we were now off to a good start. Two salads were next ($3.95 each), hers a standard mixed greens with Italian dressing on the side, and mine a Caesar. Both were very good. My wife ordered the Meatballs and Sausage on Tagliatelle pasta ($16.95). She was really happy with this dish. The meatballs were huge. In fact, the entire meal was large enough that half came home with us. My choice was the Short Ribs Pizzaiola on Tagliatelle pasta ($23.95). Another very happy customer. The meat was tender and flavorful and the pasta was properly cooked with a tasty sauce. A portion of my dish ended up coming home also. This meant that I left room for dessert. The Mango Gelato Cake ($7) was absolutely delicious with cups of Coffee ($2.85) and Cappuccino ($3.95). Our bar service was top notch, in spite of the crowd. While the food was very good( very pricey).The service was unacceptable! Thank goodness they have a server otherwise we wouldn't of gotten, water,bread and any attention at all.Our waitress (Alex) was to busy chit chatting than to pay attention to us.I asked if we were "allowed specials".With a 'tsk"' of the tongue she read them.A 20%tip was automatically added to the bill! She didn't deserve it.If it wasnt automatically added on,she wouldn't do well in the tip department! When i called to talk to the manager he stuck up for her! No apologies. Instead of the waitress walking to me to get my drink order I had to talk over two tables to put in my order. THEN...Our waitress, named Alex, (after paying our tab and telling her the balance was hers for tip) came back to our table and REQUESTED ( TOLD US) she wanted .50 cents more to round her tip to $60.00 instead of the $59.50 we gave her. one of the worst experiences in Schenectady we ordered a $45 steak medium rare. The steak was so red after one bite it was spit back out. This was after two hours of waiting for the food to come out. when the waiter finally came back after 30 minutes he asked "do you want us to throw it back on, you need to let us know next time." this was after 2 and a half hours and we said we would put it back on the stove when we get home. not a single apology or offer to compensate. a $300 tab for a 3 hour wait, the most raw $45 steak and cold fries I've ever seen and poor service. very rude and disrespectful experience read more

This place was the real deal. I kept looking around for Don Corleone and was waiting to see him at any point. The vibe was great, the food was better, and the desserts were to die for. This place has a WOW factor for certain. The food was wonderful, without question. It was a bit loud, there was live music, there was a hustle-bustle bar up front (which had a wonderful muddled peach old fashioned BTW), but it was a wonderful experience overall. Located in the Rivers casino in Schenectady. I wasn't expecting much after eating at the burger place and the Chinese restaurant in the casino. I ordered the lasagna the first time I ate here and ordered the margarita pizza and house salad with chicken. The lasagna was surprisingly delicious and quite large. The pizza and salad was also quite delicious and worth the price which was free as I gambled enough for free food. Staff is nice and with points it's a great deal. The restaurant was half full of drunk people and other half are more senior people. I still have to try Duke's Chophouse but so far Johnnys it is my favorite place to eat when I visit the casino after gambling. read more

We came to Johnnys for a graduation dinner (8 of us) and it was incredible! We started off by ordering drinks at the bar and waiting outside on the patio for our table, drinks were superb and service was great. When we moved inside for our dinner, our server Sara was so professional and nice. For apps we ordered: cheese curds, wings, oysters Rockefeller, and Italian nachos... every single one of them 10/10. And they came out so quick! For entrees, everyone in our party got different meals, and everyone was extremely satisfied. The fish and Ribeye special were incredible. We were all so full of delicious food, we could unfortunately not go in on dessert. But writing this review now, I wish I could've squeezed some in. First time trying Johnnys after a friend recommended it. I was not disappointed, in fact it's the best food I've gotten through takeout in a very long time. The staff were very friendly and professional and made the experience very easy. So onto the food, I got the tomato caprese as an app and it was so FRESH. They make their mozzarella for that in house and it was perfectly layered with a beautiful large tomato and topped with a fresh bunch of basil. They packed the olive oil and balsamic glaze separately which was awesome as it kept everything from getting soggy and allowed me to put it on to my liking. The chicken parm was the best chicken parm I've ever had, hands down. 2 large cutlets breaded and fried perfectly set atop a bed of spaghetti with the perfect amount of the most delicious sauce I have ever tasted. I added a side of spaghetti with garlic and oil and it had slices of real garlic in it not just garlic powder or that oil soaked chopped garlic most restaurants use. I mixed it with the other spaghetti because I like the flavor combination and it was enough for 2 full meals and everyone knows pasta makes the best leftovers. Ended with the carrot cake which was like no carrot cake I have ever had. Layered with cream cheese and loaded with walnuts. I attached a picture but I had already eaten some because I couldn't resist. Sorry. I will definitely be going back to try more things from the menu and eat in house. The ambiance was very inviting. Johnny's is awesome! We visited Johnny's on two separate visits to the area and loved it both times. I had the Shrimp Oreganato appetizer which had a garlic butter sauce that was fabulous and Johnny's Piccata which was served with vegetables and potatoes. Johnny's Piccata is not your typical piccata, it's even better, it has tasty sun dried tomatoes in addition to the wine butter sauce and capers and lemon. The service on both occasions was perfect, the servers were attentive and always noticed when the waters needed a refill and promptly brought bread to the table as well as offered their tips regarding the menu options. The restaurant has a very pleasant and trendy decor. I'm hooked on Johnny's and look forward to returning next time I'm in the area. read more
