We have been going to Lyles (Mikes) for over 30 years, and I always looked forward to my subs there. They were always the best till yesterday. I'm not sure why but there were new people working the counter making subs. Our 2 subs were terrible. They were lacking the usual amount of meat and vegetables. I had mix sub and it had probably 3 pieces of meat and same for my husband's which was a super Italian and lacked the usual amount of ingredients. There was more roll than anything else. The price wasn't any cheaper just the quality of the subs. We will not be back, you lost 2 loyal customers. I don't know what happened??? . Is it under new management? Was it sold?. It's too bad. You are going to lose loyal customers this way. read more

On my return visit giant subs have climbed to $9 with regulars (a satisfying meal for most folks) $5, still a bargain. The regular Italian comes with cappy and salami, the hot italian with cappy and pepperoni and the super italian with all three so that's what I got. As on my previous visit, the bread was the best part and the sub itself was under seasoned and needed more vinegar, salt, hot pepper spread (though kudos to Lyles for including their own not-so-hot pepper spread at no extra charge) and oregano which I applied to the second half at home. I'm still disappointed that the Lyle's closer to me had to close, but I'll certainly visit here if I'm in the area. For my first hoagie here, I got a super Italian. The taste was still there, the lettuce not so much, clearly there was less than there used to be. I was also asked if I wanted extra oil on my roll, to which I said sure. But I think I was asked because the roll was extra dry, and I think my preparer knew that. Hopefully this was just a fluke, and I hope they aren't in need of tightening their belts more. I ordered delivery. It came quickly and was fresh and hot, awesome. My kid got an egg sandwich, which he said was really good. I got a turkey sandwich on a hard roll which was good. It was suggested that if we came to Lyles for subs, we'd leave happy. I can now confirm that statement. We had considered going to DiBella's in Latham since it was along our route home and we've always been pleased with the subs there. But I realized that our route could just as easily pass by Lyles. So why not try something new. The staff inside were really friendly, treating us like regulars on our first visit. They even asked how our day was while they were making our subs. My wife ordered the Super Italian and I got the Mixed Italian ($6.25 large/$3.80 small). The difference is that the Super includes pepperoni and hot pepper relish while both Italians have sweet roasted peppers, cappicolla (sic.), Genoa salami, and provolone cheese. Both subs also included lettuce and tomatoes and I also asked for onions. The rolls, which are baked by Bella Napoli, are actually light, airy and relatively flat so you don't feel like you are filling up on bread or overpowering the amount of filling. The flavors were very nice and though my intention was to eat only half of my large sub, I ended up eating the whole sub because I was enjoying the flavors. As pointed out by others, the oil will likely soak through the waxed paper wrapping if you are taking the sub out to eat. We ordered a hot cheeseburger sub, a mixed Italian sub, cream of broccoli and creamy chicken and wild rice soup and a tossed salad. Both soups were excellent, still hot upon arrival! Both sandwiches were very tasty! Will definitely try others although both were a great success! The salad was disappointing. First, it was shredded lettuce. Iceberg. Yuck. That with delicious additional vegetables and olives and hard boiled egg does nothing but leave the lettuce sitting on the shredded lettuce... the bottom layer was sitting in moisture. Nobody likes soggy salad. Seeing that we ordered soup and sandwich for lunch, the salad was for dinner. But thank goodness for Lyle's. I'm really hoping the owners aren't some fascist, racist, trump-loving assholes, as it turns out a lot of people around here are, but if their food is any indication of the quality of their hearts and minds... Lyles is a small local chain, this location is right downtown. In all frankness, for the money, you get more sandwich from Subway (and there's one across the street), and you can get your choice of more than one kind of bread, which you can't at Lyle's. They have hot soups, although they're the usual industrial canned soups. But they get karmic credit for being super-fast and friendly, and you can sit at the tables on the corner of the Jay walk and watch downtown Schenectady at your feet. The one thing I was a little surprised at: with a Philly style "hoagies" name, they don't really do Philly-style hoagies so much as the usual subs. I stopped in there for lunch today as I have a few times for a sub. The shop is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Schenectady on the corner of Jay and State street. The price for the subs are very reasonably priced ($6.25 for a ft long Italian sub) the bread they use is what makes this a excellent sub, it's always soft and fresh. When ever I come down this way it's a mandatory stop in.
