Doby's Submarines has been in business for over 35 years making great subs. This family owned business was originally located near the Four Corners before moving into the 43 Mall in the 1980s. As a kid, my family would stop here for lunch or dinner after family outings. I enjoyed the Turkey Sub with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and extra mayo. My sister loved the chicken tenders here! Many years later, they're still in the same spot!! The menu offers hot & cold subs, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, potato wedges, fries, onion rings, chips, cold salads, fried seafood (clams, haddock, & cod), fried chicken, wings, hot turkey, packaged cookies, canned soda and bottled beverages. This place is great and in the middle of nowhere! But after a long day of pumpkin picking and hay rides at a farm up the road we decided to stop and eat... We ordered garlic parm chicken wings, Two Turkey subs and some cheddar fries. The fries and subs were awesome. Good bread, meat and fresh veg. But the wings! OMG... first they were the biggest GD wings I have ever seen. My fiancée has not stopped talking about them for two weeks now. It's a 38 min drive from our house... but those wings were worth it! The subs have the perfect meat to bread to cheese ratio that makes them so good. The chicken is glorious. The homemade breading is one of a kind that you can't get anywhere else. The chicken and southern fried wings are always crispy and never dry. The meat is always juicy and tender. The potatoes are also great, they are crispy and cooked perfectly. Doby's is a WSL institution. We used to ride our bikes there as kids 20+ years ago for great cheap food! I was in town today and was famished so I decided I needed to see if this place was still open. They still have the same lighting, same counter, same chairs.... Just like old times! I cant disagree with Ian but my main critique of Doby's, besides serving greasy fast food type fare- is their rolls. Did a steamroller flatten them or what? Limp, wimpy, long thin white bread....boring and bland. They have not kept up with the times to offer better choices on the sub rolls...no wraps, no whole wheat. They are an institution- granted, but if they want to compete w/ Subway, then they should consider updating their menu. Update: yes they did change their sub rolls. Much better. This is one of the best sub places in the capital region. They know what they are doing when it comes to specialty subs or if your feeling bland they'll whip you up a great cold sub. Whats long and hard and full of seamen? A submarine of course....you freak. Not the kind you eat at Doby's though. Here they do subs and have been doing it for a long time apparently. They do wings too which is always bonus shwag at any sub shop in my opinion. I'll sum it up in one sentence. This is not Deli and Brew (which is the mecca for which all sub joints should strive to emulate). The subs are edible and definitley better that awful place that rhymes with "Subway". Again....they're not Deli and Brew. I would have mentioned this while there (because my mouth tends to move faster than my brain) but a sense of self preservation kicked in after observing the tattoo'd muscle boy with the "Tapout" MMA fighter shirt on making my sub. No doubt had I not zipped it, he could have come over the counter and made my arms into a bow tie and plugged my pie hole with the sub he made me. Don't go here if you want anything a certain way. I told the person taking my order 3 times how I wanted it she kept saying no problem and ok in response. Doesn't do it when making the sandwich and then the owner not caring to do anything or fix anything starts by being extremely rude as soon as i try to speak including screaming in my face, calling me a liar, and demanding I'm wrong then refuses outright to even refund the item before I got to being really mad. I demanded the money and he instead calls me and my mother a wackjob for wanting the money back for the item since he wouldn't even try to fix it. Along with his disrespectful workers in the back clipping in with their remakes because me and him were arguing over it. Instead of wasting your time going here, go somewhere where they will do what you asked them to do orginally and actually does it. Worst customer service I have ever seen and let alone from a owner. It's hard to say why this is so good. The atmosphere is Spartan at best, and the 43 mall is a sad little strip mall, but I highly recommend the submarine sandwiches. There is something magic in the oil the put on the subs and the bread is fantastic. The hot food is delicious, the service is friendly, but the subs are really really good. There is nothing as good as our hometown Doby's Submarines that has been in West Sand lake for decades. Doby's has never changed and their menu has only become bigger and better since I was a kid. Doby's is the type of hometown restaurant that you want your children's children to be able to go to. I have never been let down by anything they put on their menu. My favorite are their subs and it doesn't matter what kind of submarine it is. The fresh rolls, meats and vegetables melt in your mouth. There is a Subway right up the road but those of us that live in the area know the only place to go for our subs is Doby's and their menu will satisfy anyone. I was going to Doby's when it was located on route 43 in West Sand Lake. For the critic who wrote the negative review has obviously not grown up in our town. I went to Dobys after a couple of team mates of mine recommended it as their favorite restaurant. I'll admit I was a little bit skeptical at first, but my curiosity got the best of me and the last time I went to get a sub, instead of getting subway I went across the street to Dobys. Upon arriving I was greeted by the brusque personality of the owner, trying to get my order as quickly as possible, which was weird since i was the only one in the place. Pressured as I was, I ordered a roast beef, Swiss cheese, and onion sub. I know, who gets that sub? Personally I hate all three of those things and I blame the poor people skills of the cash register attendant. I was embarrassed to admit that I had ordered the wrong sub, so I just went with it. I had some second thoughts when I got the sub and had to pay twice as much as I would at subway, but I ate it anyways. Well ate is an overstatement, as I said before I ordered a sub piled high with foods I dislike so it was more like suffered through with the small bites you'd expect from a child being forced to eat boiled carrots and cabbage. Throughout this whole ordeal I was being watched, no stared at to the point where I thought he was reading the inner thoughts of my soul, by the man who sold me the sub. Slightly off put by this I decided to go hide in the bathroom. I got up and asked him for the key to the restroom, and what he handed to me was more like hepatitis connected by a 90 year old string to a cheep clothes hanger. Disgusted I asked him for a glove so I didn't have to tough it, and he produced one immediately. It was almost as if he'd been asked that same thing before. In the bathroom I gathered my game plan. First I would gather up my sub to go, then I'd wave goodbye to the people workin there, finally I would leave and never go back. It seemed like it would be easy enough to pull off. And in that spirit I can tell you that steps 1 & 2 were very easy. Step 3 however, not so much. Just as I was starting my car to leave I saw a couple of my dearest friends pulling up. I went over and asked them where they were going and they said Dobys and asked if I wanted to come with them. I was still hungry because I hadn't eaten my sub the first time around, and I figured maybe I could order what I actually wanted this time since I would have to support of my friends to match up against the evil stare of the owner. So in I went, once again, breaking the vow I had made to myself in that public restroom; "never again". This time, however, I was prepared. I marched up to the counter and ordered what it really was I wanted, a ham sub w/ no cheese, lettuce, pickles, and mayo. With a cookie on the side, and a lemonade. And that time when I saw him looking into the depths of my soul, I looked right back and what I saw made my spirit soar like an uncaged eagle, embodying freedom everywhere it effortlessly, gracefully and majestically glides. The man who, not five minutes earlier had me planning my escape from a public restroom, now had a flutter of respect for me, and knowing that I returned the feeling. This mutual respect we now share is a bond that can never be broken, and I will never forget the way he made me feel that day. When I got the sub each bite tasted like freedom, paradise, and the way I would imagine that scent of freshly baked bread mixed in with the aroma of wild flowers drifting into your nose on a southern breeze would taste. After buying two "overpriced" subs, and paying about 4 times as much as I would pay for a meal at subway, I was enlightened. I had finally found my true soulmate, and it was in the form of a sub shop. I only say "overpriced" because they cost more than a subway sub, but that price difference is made up for in so many ways. I can honestly say that I am not the same naive, youthful boy who walked into Dobys on that fateful day in March, I am now something more, something better, something more evolved. I no longer look at life the same way and I have transcended the corporate lies that are told to middle America. In fact, I believe that I have become one with the almighty, I see everything he sees, and I believe that I have found the meaning of life, although it is far to complicated to articulate to someone who hasn't transcended life all together. If you want to fee this way, and trust me you do, go to Dobys. You might not get this feeling the first time, maybe you don't get the owners respect, but eventually you will, and when you do you'll be happy that you did. Trust me there is no better feeling than staring through somebody's soul and seeing that they have done the same for you, go to Dobys. Go there the next time you get the chance, every time you have a chance.
