This place is great! Close to my work I stop in frequently! I am in love with their Fried Fish Sandwich on their lunch menu and other than ordering a Burger once this is my go to! The burger was great and I definitely recommend it; how ever I am just stuck on that Fried Fish Sandwich because it's like no other! The buns are always amazingly soft and the flavor of their fries are truly original! I have stopped on my way home from work for their Chicken Tacos and they certainly didn't disappoint! The portions were big and even filled my husband up (that third order of tacos ended up coming for lunch the next day-my husband thought one order won't be enough! lol) The seating is great and a nice spot to get out of the office for lunch, nice days I sit outside! The other customers are always nice and conversation is welcome from strangers here. When you walk in it almost feels like home and everyone is always so friendly! I have tried two of their breakfast menu items as a quick pick up on the way to work. Their Bang Bang is my go to! I have had it twice and it is SO filling! I almost can't finish it and when I do I wish I hadent...it is big and well worth the$4.50- unless you are starving and feel like you could eat a horse don't even worry about ordering a side of potatoes...I could never get threw them and the Bang Bang! I have had their Breakfast Sandwich as well and that is to die for! Roll is so soft, eggs are cooked just right to have a little run of the yoke! Stopped here for breakfast mid-week and really enjoyed it. Immediately noticed the well cared for exterior, and inside the restaurant was small but tidy. The restaurant is a military theme, the little details are well thought out. You order your food at the counter and sit down. It's only partial- service. It was a little awkward because we aren't locals and didn't know that but not really a big deal. We ordered the PB&J French Toast and Scrambled Eggs, with Sausage and Home Fries, Home fries were good and crispy. That's always important right? I love the "mess-hall" trays they serve the food on, its little touches like that that make a place like this unique. Food was reasonably priced and was tasty. In retrospect I wish I tried the Corncake's (on special) I also saw some dinner items and wish we were local enough to try. The one unfortunate thing that happened to me was that the coffee bar is self-serve. I took a coffee to go and when I got out to the car I noticed the lid was dirty (so I went back in to change it out ) no big deal but I ended up tripping really bad on an un-even "lip" in the sidewalk just outside the front door. I had the corn cakes with strawberries and whipped cream. Although I do love their corn beef and scrambled eggs, I needed to slow down on the eggs for a bit. Needless to say the corn cakes were a delicious alternative and they were warm and tasty, the strawberries were nice and fresh and the whip cream was so light and delicious. This is a great concept, a military style cafeteria serving up good comfort food at reasonable prices. Mess Hall is small roadside military style cafeteria located on Route 43 across the road from Averill Park High School. The place opened for business on May 2, 2016 and is owned and operated by a couple (Shawn & Noelle) with a military background. They also operate a catering business too. Mess Hall is only open on weekdays serving breakfast (0500-1000), lunch (1000-1500), and dinner (1500-1900). The menu offerings served here is the basic comfort foods and dishes. For breakfast, the offerings include breakfast sandwiches, egg plates, and hot coffee. The lunch offerings include burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, chicken tenders, all served with a side of fries. Daily soups are offered too. For dinner, one homemade chef's selection comfort dish of the day and choices of two-three sides are served up, $8 plus tax for each entree, pretty reasonable! The place inside is very small and cozy decorated with military photos and goods and there is only one metal table with metal stools for eating in.The place is order at the counter with the daily specials posted above the small kitchen area. While driving through the area, I stopped off at Mess Hall at 1845 hours on a Friday night, 15 minutes before the end of chow time. The place was very busy, not much room inside to stand. Shawn was doing the cooking behind the counter and Noelle was taking orders with the kids helping out. The special dish of the night was a seafood newburg served with rice pilaf and corn. However, they were completely sold out of the seafood newburg by the time I arrived here. Another customer before me had requested chicken tenders as a substitute for the main dish. I also decided to order the Chicken Tenders ($5.50 plus tax) served with fresh cut fries and the two sides of the night, rice pilaf and corn. The food took a while to be ready since the deep fryer needed to be heated up to fry the tenders and fries. The 4 breaded boneless chicken tenders were thick and tender and not greasy, chicken was a bit stringy. The fresh cut fries were nicely seasoned with salt and had a soft texture, slightly greasy. The yellow rice pilaf (pint) was cooked just right with pieces of bacon in the mix, good flavor. The corn side dish (pint) was also very good, which had pieces of fresh green beans and sweet onions. I would definitely go marching back to Mess Hall in Averill Park for dinner and hopefully I can make it to chow time earlier next time around. Mess Hall has quickly become overwhelmingly popular thanks to word of mouth in the community and social media shares on Facebook. I've eaten here twice. First time it was excellent. I had the Cuban sandwich which I loved. Second time it was not good. My fried chicken sandwich was bad. The chicken was so over cooked/burned it tasted terrible, almost impossible to chew. The sides were good though. Not sure if I'll try them again as I don't like places that are not consistent. 2.5 stars would be my score but you can't do that on yelp so 3 it is. I pass this place every day, and finally decided to stop in. It's a unique place for sure, no frills seating inside and out, food is served on stainless steel, partitioned trays, but the food is top notch. Huge portions, and oh so delicious. I had the Charlie Foxtrot, eggs over homemade corned beef hash, with a side of potatoes. Really a fun place to eat that pays homage to our military. Kids would love this place. Easy, Cheap, Fast food. This is more of a takeout joint, but there is some seating. I took my toddler in his stroller and did alright. Not recommended for large parties or sit down dining. They made me a patty melt (not on the menu) and it was perfect! Fries were hand cut and seasoned with a Creole kind of mix. Pickles served on the side were homemade tasting. They had evening specials that start at 4pm and they're open until 7 (but they open early! 5am! My hubby says the coffee is good and so is the egg sandwich.) not a ton of options but what a great eatery in the AP! read more

AWESOME place to grab a hardy breakfast or burger. Have been to the Mess Hall, almost every week since they have opened for lunch, with aunts, uncles, brother, daughter, son in law, nieces. All have loved everything we have eaten, including a 4 yo & his grilled cheese.
