    Sharp Italian, potato salad.
    Corie Y.

Great sub! I ordered on Grubhub (guilty) as I have been wanting to try this spot. I love a good Italian sub, and had heard good things. I ordered the sharp Italian. The sub roll was amazing, I loved the sesame crust. The meat combo was pretty good, the sharp provolone was a great stand out. The veggies were well seasoned which I really enjoyed and it added a great flavor and moistness to the sandwich. I added oil, vinegar and mayo to the sub and it was perfect as ordered. I also tried the potato salad, is that blue cheese? I have no clue if I received their normal product but it was basically potatoes in blue cheese dressing. I tried looking on their website and I couldn't figure it out. It was fine but odd. I also got a cookie and it was decent and a good end to the meal. I would definitely order again and try a different sub.

Custom 3 meat Italian for comparison from DiBella's.

I'm not a big Sub fan, I have maybe two or three per year. For the last 13 years, however, my go to has been DiBella's. Other chains have moved into the area, and I've been reluctant to even try them since they sound so average when reviewed by others or when I look at their menu. But when I glanced through the menu at Primo Hoagies my attention was caught by their Italian Classics. The variations included permutations of regular, mild, and sharp. Mild used sweet capicola vs hot capicola, and sharp used sharp provolone vs a milder provolone. Primo includes prosciutto in their Italian Classics and DiBella's does not offer prosciutto at all. Since DiBella's happened to be offering me a free 5" sub, I thought it would be a good opportunity to buy one from each establishment in Latham, since they are relatively close to each other, and compare. Primo offers three sub sizes, small, Primo (9"?), and whole. I decided to go with the Primo ($12.99). My choice of the Sharp Italian included Genoa salami, hot Capicola, Prosciutto, Sharp Provolone, lettuce, tomato, onions, black pepper, and oregano. My choice of dressing was oil & vinegar, and my bread choice was their signature sesame seeded. For the comparison with DiBella's, I had to do a custom order to have close compatibility. On their Everything Roll (a favorite of mine) I added three meats, salami, capicola, and spicy ham along with provolone, lettuce, tomato, and onions. Dressing was their "famous oil." Since it was a FREE 5", I only paid a tip. Rolls from both were equally fresh and tasty, but Primo's seemed a little less substantial giving a sense of more filling to bread ratio. The DiBella's roll was slightly more crusty than soft on top. The first bite of each indicated a real difference in taste. The hot capicola and the sharp provolone flavor in the Primo was immediately noticeable vs the lack of any noticeable spiciness from the spicy ham and the lack of any provolone flavor in the DiBella's. The spiciness of the Primo was not a bad thing or overpowering, it was simply enjoyably noticeable. Similarly, it was nice to know that you could identify some flavor in Primo's sharp provolone. You can probably guess by now that I enjoyed my Primo Hoagies sub more. Both stores offer a lot more variety than just Italian subs. I may simply be rotating between them the next time I have a hankering for a sub. But the Old Italian with Dry Cured Capicola at Primo certainly does sound inviting. On line ordering using the app for each business was reasonably easy, both orders were ready on time, and each order was filled accurately.

It was good to know the turkey is roasted "in house." I took half home. In my opinion, the prices are not only fair but on the low side for the quality of food served. My sandwich was only $9.99 with chips and a pickle spear. Side salads are inexpensive and delicious I hear. The two sided laminated menu was easy to navigate. Specials of the day are posted at the entrance. Service was prompt and friendly. The charming cafe is located at the end of a strip of businesses off Rt. 7 near the Galleria 7 Food Court. There are many tables and a full bar in a well lit inside seating area. In addition, there is a great patio with nice planters on one side. Lots of parking. Easy access for wheelchairs and walkers. Looking forward to returning for a Panini, or soup, or salad, or breakfast sandwich. I will check out the catering menu to use in future. The first time I order a burger at someplace new to me, I always skip the sauces and condiments, so I can taste the flavor of the beef and the toppings. It certainly comes through here! Despite being cooked well, the beef flavor was strong, and the patties remained juicy. I wish they offered Swiss cheese as another possible topping. The fries are not my favorite. I do enjoy crisp fries, and these indeed are. The first few, while still hot, were tasty. But there comes the question, "Can fries be too crisp?" For me, these would be a "yes." While I appreciated the crunch, these were beyond the point where you still have the fluffier texture inside. They almost felt like french-fry shaped potato chips. They're also very filling. One serving could easily satisfy 3 people. I'll want to visit again to try one of their chicken sandwiches. And I saw on one of their signs that they carry Jane's Ice Cream, something I haven't had for a while. Bottom line: I'd come here for a burger or a chicken sandwich, but I'd be likely to get a side elsewhere in the building.

We went the first time because it was one of those days, and our non-vegetarian kid was desperate to eat and we were in the neighborhood. So while he chowed down on the pork sandwich platter (which was, he reported, excellent, and I can tell you the aroma made my mouth water), we split one of each non-meat side available. Chips, Potato Salad, Mac and Cheese, the Japanese eggplant, and the Kimchi Coleslaw. (I think we passed on the beans because they had pork in them.) They were FABULOUS! I mean, I've had plenty of BBQ sides in my time, back when we were carnivores, and I've tried them all. I can think of maybe two or three others that were the equals here, but for a limited run of options, it was non-pareil. It kind of makes me wish they'd put their minds to a veggie sandwich, the name of the place notwithstanding. They do the maillard reaction proud. One tiny tip for the owners: "Reuben" is misspelled on your menu.

The Chicken was absolutely delicious with lots of mushrooms and flavorful sauce. The meatballs were enormous and more importantly tasty. The only dish I wasn't entirely pleased with was the antipasto. I was envisioning whole chunks of cheese, olives, peppers and rolled cold cuts. Instead it was finely chopped cold cuts and American cheese on a bed of oily greens with a few pickled vegetables. Alas, I don't have any pictures! This is a haute cuisine place that is masked by the casual dining atmosphere. Seriously: top notch chef, original recipes, a core dedication to quality seafood, paired with a fresh fish counter and some prepared food to go. We usually go for something special, but tonight I decided to get an old childhood standby, fried clams (the Boston Basket) and the fish burger sandwich. I did not expect either to be as transportive as they turned out to be. The fried clams were as delicately done as I've ever had: not crispy, but not too floppy, with excellent breading. And while I prefer my clams naked, we tried all three of the dipping sauces -- a remoulade, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. Now normally I loathe cocktail sauce and can take tartar sauce or leave it, so I figured we'd eat up the remoulade and ignore the other two. Still, I gave them little nibbles. Man! The cocktail sauce was like no other I've had, with a heavy hint of horseradish and a far fresher flavor than I've ever had. Then the tartar sauce -- genius! It had a delicate spicing, with capers providing a floral backdrop. That was only a preliminary, as the fish burger proved to be complex, with hints of multiple kinds of fish, and a fennel-based spicing. I ended up having that afterglow, as if I'd had a couple of cocktails and was sitting next to a fireplace, that is the hallmark of truly fine food at an advanced level. We also had the usual outstanding service, attentive without being pushy. I seriously think Hooked should consider splitting into two restaurants: one where the ambiance is upgraded to match the high caliber of the food, and another cheaper one that is strictly fast casual and takeout, and they'd more than double the business. There is a restaurant back where we come from in California, Turtle Bay, that did this with fine dining on one side and the quick, simple, and affordable food on the other side, with a big shared kitchen between them but with completely separate ambiances. That way I could come back more frequently, and still have the original Hooked for special occasions!

Now the downfall, the chicken sandwich. I did notice other plates coming to tables looking like the fryer temp. is too hot, or cook time was too long. It had good flavor under that burn, and the chicken was close to not being juicy, almost dry. The place is clean, and if not for the location, I would sit at the bar and have the raw bar! Something very important to me that hit me the instant I stepped through the door, if you're looking for a great shot of A/C on a hot day, not here!!! Barely got comfortable from the almost 90 degree day on a bike, and then worked up a return of sweating as the place filled up.
