I've been a very loyal customer of this place, coming in on average 3-5 days a week. Granted, Im very picky about my drink, I like it a certain way. Some of the help make it right, some don't. When it's wrong, I take it anyway. This time they have a new girl, who consistently has done the exact opposite of what I requested. First two times I ignored it and took it anyway. Third time I told her, and she rudely ignored me. This time I asked her to remake, no sorry, just briskly grabbed cup from me and slammed it in the trash. I told her I didn't appreciate the attitude and owner basically asked me to leave. He said he would make the drink himself " this time" but don't come back. Rude doesn't begin explain. Well they don't give two hoots about the customer, have you seen the owner respond to a single review? Just one offer to make it right? I think not. Coffee stores are like fleas on a stray dogs back, there are choices out there. I don't support businesses that won't support their customers, ( actually make them feel awful) and neither should you. read more

The rudest service ever! Sounded like he was the owner, too. I brought my own cup and asked if he would warm it for me. The stainless steel cup gets very cold and makes the coffee too cool if you don't preheat it. He refused and told me I could do it myself in their MOP SINK! It was disgusting and dirty. I ordered a 12 oz coffee and he charged me for a 16 oz size. When I asked why he said because I brought my own cup and it was large. I said it was fine if he just put in 12 oz but he told me it is self service and they don't trust people to put in the right amount. So much for saving the environment and saving them the cost of the cup. When I left all I could think about was that filthy mop sink and rude service as I drank my coffee. With coffee shops on every corner you would think the staff would go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Most coffee shops do, but not Johnny's Java. Never again! read more

I pulled off the highway looking for good coffee on a recent road trip. Johnnys Java was right there with plenty of parking and some nice outdoor seating. Perfect! The experience was marred by them refusing to rinse out the cup that I brought in. Instead they directed me to the janitorial sink to rinse out the coffee remains in the cup. I had to rinse it myself with a disgusting dirty mop in the sink. This was a proper coffee mug that was basically clean but just had a small amount of coffee left in the bottom. I wasn't expecting the barista to scrub it, but typically a cafe will discard the remains and give it a quick rinse before refilling it. We need to move beyond the throwaway society and start encouraging reuse. Its too bad Johnny's Java is not a part of the solution. read more

I was so excited when we entered this coffee shop. It smelled wonderful and the pasteries looked pretty good! I ordered a latte with an extra shot and hubby got a cinnamon roll. The coffee and roll were good.... but the service...????? A very curt young lady making coffee and an extremely monotone expressionless cashier ran the counter while a grey haired man, possibly a manager or owner?, stood by. Either they are his daughters? or family? or nobody understands customer service. And maybe they are afraid that their faces would crack if they smiled at a customer or were a tad friendly. There is no excuse for poor or mediocre service. I would never go back based on the customer service. What a shame. read more

The atmosphere is always really "stale." The staff seems bored to death! But on a plus side...They do have a great tea selection.

I would avoid this establishment at all costs. I went once and the coffee was mediocre at best. The employees are beyond rude and discriminate against the disabled. I can't believe you demanded to see a service dogs paperwork and told them they weren't welcome. Despicable. read more

Friendly staff, drip coffee is solid, it's certainly strong. Pastries are good, love the apricot bars. Only been in during mornings. The place is really big, looks great to sit down and work, comfy chairs, big tables, I think there's a fireplace or at least it just feels like you're in a giant, well worn in the best way, family room. read more

I LOVE this place. SO cute and the staff is friendly and helpful. The owner/manager(?) is there most times and he is so happy and personable! GREAT brewed coffee, soo much better than Starbucks brew IMO. But then again almost every brewed coffee is better than Starbucks lol. They also have some delicious beakfast burritos, a cranberry coconut bar that's delectable, and a tasty white chocolate mocha that has a hint of vanilla taste to it. Yum!! So good. Definitely recommend this place; it is becoming one of my regular java stops now. :) read more

I came in one minute before closing, and the staff was very friendly. I asked if they shut down their machines yet cuz I'd never make them reopen for just a coffee. I ordered a white mocha, then had some cocoa powder added to it. By far the best mocha I've ever had in my life! They used real melted chocolate and oh my god. Delicious. Super yum! Indoor and outdoor seating make for a nice, relaxing experience. The ladies that work here are very nice.

I go here every weekend with friends and love the coffee. The iced mocha isn't overly sweet like the other chain coffee places, nor is it too strong like some other chain places. I also really like the black iced tea. It's always quiet and a great place to get together and catch up with friends. It's a diamond in the rough and I'm so glad I came across it. I was getting super tired of roosters, sketchy people and silly college kids at various chain coffee locales. read more

I come here often and regularly as it is a spacious place to work. The service is ok, however the owner refuses to EVER change the music. The only time is during Xmas when Xmas music is out on. Change the horrible trumpet music (via Shazam) the DixieLand ramblers on forever repeat. The same music all day every day is not good business in a cafe, and listen to your staff and customers when they say change the music selection. read more

One of my favorite places to drop by for an espresso and pastry, or to meet a friend or two among their sturdy indoor tables or pleasant outdoor seating when it's nice out. My poison is straight espresso with a little cream to smooth out the flavor and texture. Nothing else to mask the taste. So when the espresso from a cafe is good, it's very very good, and the opposite for the nasty stuff I've learned to expect from Starbucks. I like Johnny's Java in Cotati espressially for this reason. It's not the greatest available, but I find it consistently good. Unfortunately, I just tried calling them to ask whether they have free Wi-Fi. The number listed all over the place is 707-794-0168. The first two times I called, it rang four times and went to a fax machine. The third time, it rang and rang with no answer. So I gave up. I'll find another spot to meet with my business contact this time. Pretty lame for a business that's trying to com-"Pete" with large chain stores nearby. read more

What a great little coffee shop! I really enjoyed a "Cool Johnny" -blended mocha- on my drive home. In response to the person upset about them not rinsing your cup for you: I too brought in my own cup and was directed to the sink to rinse it on my own. I however was very pleased to FINALLY find a coffee shop that wont bring other customers DIRTY cups behind the counter! I have always been very disturbed at other coffee shops to see a barista take a customers cup behind the counter, make their drink and stir it with the stir spoons and then proceed to make my drink with the same -now soiled-utensils. NASTY! Thank you Johnny's, not only for your DELICIOUS drinks, but you sanitary standards! I will definitely be back! read more

As a keen supporter of local folks, I really really wanted to get my coffee @ Johnny's. I tried many times over the past 6 months to like them, to go there on Sundays as it is in my travel path. However, I should have taken note of the almost always empty enviornment.. this past sunday was the last time I'll go there. The coffee is not great and food is always stale tasting but most importantly the service is horribly rude .... and it's not just the staff, its the owner. blah, there are way better places to spend my time! read more

Its a rarity I write on yelp. I only do if the place was really good or extremely poor.. In the instance of my first visit to Johnnys Java, it was great! First, the atmosphere was very relaxing and open. Doesn't feel commercial and actually has some good art in the walls. The music while I was there was super pleasant. I also loved the hand painted bathroom. Second, the employees were very kind and also patient. My order was correct and it didn't take long. Third, when I finally tasted my coffee which was a mocha, it wasn't super sweet or bland. It had a fantastic mix. I was very pleased. I was not interested in getting something super sugary and like I said I thought the young lady did a good job. Didn't break my wallet either. I'd go back. Thanks guys read more

Being raised in Cotati, I have been going to this Johnny's Java since I started drinking coffee. Generally, it's ok (except for the burritos that sit in the case all week). BUT...yesterday...I was HUGELY disappointed. And not in an "off day" kind of way. Yesterday morning, I stopped by at about 8:30am. Ordered my coffee and told the guy at the counter (who I think is the owner) that I brought my own cup (I do this everywhere I buy coffee). He said "ok", then proceeded to write down my drink order on a paper cup. I let him know again that I have my own cup and again showed it to him. He said "I know, the barista will be more than happy to pour my drink into it". I was dumbfounded. I purposely bring my own cup so that a single use paper cup doesn't go into a landfill. He didn't get it. Nor did the barista who just handed me the cup. Even Starbucks has a process for this. In fact, they encourage you to bring your own cup. I'm blown away. In this day and age, recycling is a part of our daily lives. Requesting a coffee shop (that's not even busy) to make your coffee in a reusable stainless steel cup just seems, oh I don't know, the right thing to do. Get it together guys...train your people...It's not that difficult...and it saves you money...Kind of a business no-brainer. And, in reading some of these other reviews..looks like I'm not the only person that has experienced this. read more

house coffee was bitter which means either they aren't doing a good job cleaning machines or are using old coffee, or both. Top that with cashier wantng to charge .50 cents for a small empty paper cup--I try to support small businesses but in this case I can go to starbucks and pay same amount for a better cup of coffee, skip the attitude and they'll give me an extra paper cup for free. read more

First time here, although I grew up in this town. I give it one star for the space and the comfort of the seating and space from each table. But, I hear people buying and picking up breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches, yet i only see pastries. ...and there are absolutely no food items on the menu. I am just starving and would love a burrito, but with the long linxe and two little girls behind the counter? No thanks. Guess your regulars know the menu, and that you're also not interested in more regulars. I went to Johnny's Java to purchase a coffee/pastry and do some work for an hour. A customer was just finishing a conversation with the man behind the counter (presumed owner) when I arrived around 5:45a - the customer had left the premises by the time I ordered my coffee drink. I was the ONLY patron in the shop. I ordered a small drink, he picked up a cup wrote something on it and told me how much I owed ($3.45) and, I guess, anticipating how I'd pay for my order, he took change out of the register and waited for me to pay. I had three ones and change, and while I was counting out the change (quarter, dime, nickel - all took less than 30 seconds for me to retrieve) - he said to me "That's just rude. I had your change." Not really understanding that he was directing his comment at me, I responded, "Yes, I wanted to use my change." At which point he threw the cup into the trash and said "I don't need this. I'm busy. You're just rude. You can leave." He walked out of the store (leaving me alone at the counter wondering what had just happened) and as I was putting my money back into my wallet, he came back into the store carrying pastry boxes and told me, again, "You can leave, I'm not going to make you a drink." I walked out and wished him a good day. Outside, the parking lot was lonely and empty - just like the inside of Johnny's Java. read more
