We previously dined at Johnny Piancone's and enjoy the meal very much. The only problem we had the last time was that they charged me $3.50 for a little extra sauce for my pasta. On July 17, we had a reservation, but the woman tried to make us think we were lying until I offered to show her my confirmation. She told me she was just waiting for a table to get up. We were consistently told to move back-and-forth from one side of the aisle to the next, making us feel like we were in the way. She then offered me the one high top that was in the back close to the bar area and was annoyed I didn't want it. She said when I make a reservation, I should indicate that I didn't want the one high top table. After over a 1/2 hour, she told me whoever gets up first we have that table, but when a table got up and we were about to walk over, she yelled that we can't have that table that it's for 4 and we were 2. She was extremely arrogant. The waitress serving us was very nice and kept apologizing that the bar was busy for my husband's drink, then apologizing that the kitchen was so busy, delaying the soup and then the main dish. After over 1/2 hour after we ordered and filling up with bread because we were starving by that time, the soup came. It was very good, but we wanted to leave room for the main dish so I only had a little and my husband had about half. I told the waitress that I never took soup home but was wondering if that would be OK since we wanted to have some of the main dish. My husband said that she could put it in one container if it was large enough to fit. She brought it back in a tiny little container, and when we looked at it, she told us "don't worry, you'd be surprised how much fits in there". When we got home, it was evident that they filled this small container and spilled out the rest. I was so upset with our experience that I sent an email to the owner on July 19th, and to this date about six weeks or so after I have never heard from him with an apology. Amazing experience! My espresso martini was delicious and there were lots of drink options. I called 2 days earlier for a reservation and Justin called me back to confirm but I highly recommend getting an automated option so we can make reservations online. There were 4 of us and everyone loved their dish. Service was good and attentive and appetizers were delicious. We had the pear salad, burrata salad and calamari. Every one of the appetizers were epic but the calamari was superb with perfect crispness. My chicken La nonna was very good and portion was generous. Parking is nearby in a lot but it's small and not likely you'll get a spot. Leave time for driving down the side street to park. Really great restaurant and can't wait to go again. read more

We found JP's because we spent a Saturday afternoon in Long Branch by Pier Village and couldn't find a restaurant with an opening for 7 at any of the usual suspects on the water. We were so glad we stumbled on the this gem. It's sometimes cliche to say the food, atmosphere and staff was amazing. But that's the only way to describe it. I had the ny sirloin. Tendor, over mashed potatoes, fresh carrots, 3 large shrimp, all accompanied by this wonderful Cajun cream sauce(not spicy). It worked and will bring me back. Other dishes such as the ribeye, chicken parm, and Chilean(I think sea bass) were all described as great tasting. Plenty of desert options and not exactly run of the mill. What a great spot. Tucked away on a busy street and a little hard to find but well worth the effort. The Calamari appetizer was perfectly prepared with a spicy marinara on the side and pleased all four at our table. The Pork Chop Murphy was outstanding. Perfectly seasoned, juicy, tender and delicious served atop a medley of sautéed vegetables that were cooked just right with a little crunch and a flavorful saucy broth underneath. Old school with a capital O. We came on an August Wednesday when the place was about half full. Started off with a warm hunk from a peasant loaf. No extra charge here. Decent pours of a glass of Super Tuscan and a Riesling. If you are not driving, cocktails would be the way to go. For an app we shared the grilled peaches. Perfectly ripe peaches, prosciutto and a sweet Balsamic glaze. I would have preferred a different cheese, the garlic in the Boursin didn't compliment the other flavors. Grouper was adorned with shrimp and mussels, accompanied with cherry tomatoes, roasted potatoes, and broccoli rabe. A substantial, well prepared plate. Large rigatoni were tender. But the dish was all about seafood, large shrimp, plump scallops, and lump crabmeat of a size and quality I associate with steakhouse crab cocktail. Maybe a bit underseasoned, but still a fine dish. We were too stuffed for dessert. It took a while for our server to appear, but once she did service was excellent. Overall, an enjoyable meal, the trip to 1980 was a lagniappe. read more

This was our first time at this cute, casual local place with a bar and indoor/outdoor seating (maybe not on a rainy night today). We were also given bread and butter, which was very tasty. We didn't know there was Parking in the back until we had already parked on the street. The place was a bit loud, which usually wasn't a big deal, but it was hard to hear each other since it was very busy. The staff was super friendly and attentive. The food was delicious--we had some antipasto boards--incredibly fresh and enjoyable. The portions were all HUGE --we all tasted each other and were left stuff, and it seemed like the entrees we didn't make much of a dent. We got the Sunday sauce, the parm, and the bolognese; all were very good. We were left with leftovers and too stuffed to try the delicious-looking desserts they had on a counter. Short version: small restaurant, service was ok, menu was seafood heavy, allergic reaction to unlisted ingredients in the dessert. Would not choose to go back but if a group of friends were going I would agree. I have lived in Long Branch for many years and finally got around to visiting. The ambiance is fine, it's a small restaurant. There are a lot of seafood options in the menu, I'm not a seafood eater, I ended up trying the Sundays Best dish. It consisted of 3 types of meat(meatballs, sausage, pork chop), a marinara sauce, very al dente rigatoni, and one large spoonful of ricotta. I ended up asking for more ricotta. The sausage and ricotta were the best part of the dish. I would not get it again though. I got the mozzarella carozza for an appetizer. It's essentially a deep fried Mozzarella grilled cheese. I think it had too much basil in it, but over all it was tasty. I ordered the ricotta pound cake for dessert. I have a nut allergy, so after reading the list of desserts I chose the pound cake. I also can't have raspberries, nothing was listed on the menu about raspberries. When the cake came out, it had a raspberry sauce on it. I unfortunately had to send it back and ask for a plain on. The waitress brought another pice of cake out, this time plain and less whipped cream(one scoop instead of two). I ate some of the pound cake and it was good. But then it kind of had a weird taste. So I asked the waitress if there was any kind of almond in it( extract, paste, amaretto?) she comes back and says yes. By this time my face is tingly and my throat is swelling. I ended up having to take some medication but I'm clearly alive, since I'm writing this the next day. Fortunately my allergy is not too bad currently. I told her they really should have what's in the food listed, especially for high allergy items. I specifically picked the pound cake because it's not normally made with nuts. The waitress kind of laughed it off, it was a little off putting. Allergies are serious. I don't see why ingredients can't be listed for the desserts, especially when other cakes said, walnut crust, or flourless chocolate cake. Also it was just a small slip of blue printer paper, it wasn't card stock or laminated, so the cost to fix this shouldn't be high. read more

Just came home from a delicious meal at one of our favorite places, Johnny Piancone's in Long Branch. The food is always excellent, fairly priced for a quality meal, and tonight they went the extra mile to make my sister happy who was visiting from Denver. As is often the case, we had leftover food from our generous size meal. My sister asked for her Carbonaro to be boxed for a late night snack and the new bus person didn't understand that she wanted the small leftover boxed to go. Our server and owner apologized and as we were leaving, they gave us a freshly cooked meal to take with us. My sister was not only impressed with the quality of the food but so happy and surprised that the owner sent her home with the tasty gift. read more
