Interior of Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler in Edmond.
    Jason F.

Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler is an Oklahoma institution as they are fast food meets fast casual restaurant, as they serve up some solid charbroiled burgers, in addition to sandwiches, chicken entrées and salads. What brought me here on weeknight evening for dinner was when I was visiting the area with family who live in the area and we were looking for a quick place to eat that would be affordable as well, and as we drove around one of my hosts suggested that we go to Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler and I was agreeable to try something new. Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler has been an Oklahoma City institution for over fifty years now, with five locations in the metropolitan area. What makes them so successful and unique is that their burgers are cooked to order, charbroiled style of course, topped with your choice of fresh vegetables such as iceberg lettuce, tomatoes and diced onions, and if you order their signature cheeseburger they actually top your burger with shredded cheese! The exterior of the location of Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler in Edmond where we dined is a little innocuous, as they are all brick clad with very little in terms of windows, inside it's brightly lit and clean as you enter they have you wait behind an entry barrier and view their menu which is now shown on flat panel television screens until it's your turn to order at their counter. It's all fast casual here at Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler, as you order they give you a number and they call it out when your order is ready for pickup. The menu at Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler is separated into categories including Burgers & Sandwiches, Grilled & Deli Favorites, Platters & Plates, Sides, Chili & Soups, Salads, Drinks and Desserts. Of course I came for their Classic Cheeseburger which is listed as number 8, which comes with their "extras" at no charge including lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, mustard, mayo, ketchup and of course Johnnie's sauce. We also decided to all share in an order of their Onion Rings, which are homemade daily. Others in our party ordered their French Fries with Cheese, Chicken Fried Chicken Platter served with their option of French Fries, and a slice of their Banana Cream Pie. It didn't take too long for our order to come out and our number to be called. As I found my burger nicely handcrafted and evenly charred thanks to it being charcoal grilled instead of on a flat top grill, which I would assume also meant that most of the grease from cooking it fell by the wayside too. Their onion rings are breaded which makes them unique when being served in a fast food setting. But overall, I was pleasantly surprised as the food was not only tasty but affordable, as we came for their signature burgers and we were not disappointed. The fact that they also serve various menu items like chicken, both fried and grilled, and a wide variety of salads only proves that Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler has adapted with the times, and we should all be appreciative of this fact. On the day we went, they were hosting a private birthday party in their small room, so Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler is clearly a local favorite for simply hanging out in a clean and familiar place. I like that they also serve up homemade pie slices, which gives them a real diner feel, reminiscent of my own local institution back in California called Nation's Giant Hamburgers. I'm partial to them and will now be partial to Johnnie's Charcoal Broiler whenever I visit family in Edmond, as this place clearly holds special memories for all who have visited.

Growing up in Oklahoma City Johnnies was a staple ! The nice thing about this store is open till 9 o'clock and the drive-through was fast efficient hot / fresh at 8:45 pm Burgers are about seven bucks apiece now but Worth every penny Number one and rings for me...

    Theta burgers and fries

A family trip to Oklahoma isn't quite the same without our first meal consisting of Theta burgers, mountains of their delicious onion rings and their perfect fries!! Johnnie's never go away

Theta cheeseburger -- not much on it, hated the hickory sauce, shredded cheese barely melted (which is their thing, why?), 1/5

Onion rings are always good. Service is almost always quick. The chili cheese burger is a favorite.

The food here is great! I have been a customer since the late 70's. The onion rings are the best, the burgers are too!

Always a good burger. Love the big shredded cheese they have and their onion rings. Open flame burgers are the best.

Place is good. Little pricy for a burger but definitely enjoy it. Their Dr Pepper and Ranch are some of the best I've had anywhere.

I'm not a golfer, I've golfed and I've been to the driving range but it's just not for me! However, I have found out some of the best food is served at golf courses. Since I was eating solo I sat at the bar. The menu was intriguing and I had to give some thought as to what I wanted to try. I knew I wanted a sandwich or burger so I went back and forth between the Club Sandwich, the French Dip, Pulled Pork, and the burgers. I finally decided I'm at The Lookout why not just go with the signature Lookout Burger. It was delicious, the smoky bacon stuck out the most along with the pimento cheese! The burger was nice and juicy. The only negative was the bun! It just didn't hold up to the burger. The fries were good as I asked for them to be crispy! I sat in front of a fully stocked bar but this was only a lunch break and I had to return to work. Madison was the person behind the bar and she was delightful! After I finished and she brought the tab we discussed best options for lunch, her top choice was the French Dip. That being one of my favorite sandwiches I must return to try it out! This being a golf course restaurant one would naturally see a lot of the golf theme. However, you don't have to golf to enjoy some good food! I would highly recommend giving this place a try!

Patties Hamburgers & Roast Beef - Edmond, OK…read more In my ongoing hunt for solid comfort food around Edmond, I decided to give Patties Hamburgers & Roast Beef a try--and this one is definitely worth a visit. It's a relatively small spot on 2nd Street, but don't let the size fool you. This place delivers big where it matters: hot, made-to-order food and friendly service that makes you feel welcome right away. I walked in fully intending to go with a classic burger... but sometimes you've got to listen to the people. On their way out, a couple told us it was their first visit too and highly recommended the French Dip and the daily special. That was all I needed--I made the audible. What We Ordered: * French Dip with au jus and fries * Chili Cheeseburger with fries The Food: The French Dip was the star for me--tender beef, plenty of melted cheese, and that au jus brought it all together. Solid, no-frills comfort food done right. The chili cheeseburger was messy (in a good way) and packed with flavor. Fries were crispy and did their job. Everything came out hot, fresh, and exactly how you want it. The Vibe: Casual, laid-back, and exactly what you'd expect from a local comfort food joint. Nothing fancy--but that's not why you're here. Service: Very friendly across the board. You can tell they care about the experience, and that goes a long way. Final Thoughts: This is one of those places where you already know you'll be back before you leave. Next visit, I'm going all-in on the burger lineup--and after seeing that dessert case, I may need to save room. If you're in Edmond and craving comfort food, put this one on your list.

The entrance has had a light refresh as well. Gone is the big glass dessert display case but the additional walking space is nice. Sadly we learned that the cakes are being discontinued, RIP the wonderful carrot cake. Fortunately we snagged one of the last pieces. It's my understanding that cookies and other sweet treats will still be available. The menu is loaded with new and exciting choices. Deciding what to choose was a great problem to have. We started with the Trio Dipper with house made chips and balloon bread, which is like pita bread on steroids and just as delicious. The dip selections were terrific and we were brought more chips when ours ran low. Two of us ordered the Tuscan Chicken. They were exceptional bites. They were parmesan breaded chicken fritters stuffed with the tomatoes and cheese. It's an inventive take on a traditional recipe and a tasty home run! My husband ordered the Chicken Piccata, looking for a lower calorie option. The lemon butter wine sauce was delicious and it's a terrific option. The last guest chose the fried chicken which is an old and familiar favorite. You absolutely cannot go wrong. We ended the night sharing a piece of carrot cake and a salted caramel cookie.
