My quest for the best oyster happy hours in NYC brought me here on a sunny winter afternoon. John Doe is a corner establishment with ample seating, screens lined up for premium sports viewing and a menu that is hard to beat. Their commitment to $1oysters all day everyday is nothing short of impressive and I'm totally here for it. After indulging in a ritualistic post-travel Sunday body massage, I popped in here and was not disappointed at all. The bartender was warm and kind. I got myself a pint of the blueberry ale which was delicious and fragrant, and ordered two dozen oysters to down. When the waiter came out with the oysters I was absolutely shocked. These oysters were HUGE and meaty and briny, sweet and succulent and everything an oyster should be. They come with a very nice mignonette, cocktail sauce and thick, juicy lemon wedges as well as a pack of oyster crackers. I scarfed down these bad boys like my life depended on it as the buffalo bills played in the background. I bet this spot is so nice to sit outside in the summer as the view of the empire state really seals in the quintessential NYC dining experience. This is my go to restaurant in the neighborhood and it never lets me down. Been coming here going on 10 years and during all that time, the food and service has been uniformly excellent. You can't beat the one dollar oysters and stiff drinks and the entrées are all delicious. The staff is friendly and fast. The bar is popular because of the various selections so if you're sitting on the side with the tables across from the bar, it can get a little loud but that's a minor inconvenience compared to the food and service. After a 30 mile hike from the Javits Center my boy brought me here because he says this place has the best happy hour deals. I was impressed with the aesthetics and the ambiance of this place. The service and the burger itself were absolutely amazing! And this place had outdoor seating for when the weather gets warmer. When the person brought out that classy bottle of water I knew this place couldn't disappoint. Definitely give this place a go if your in the city. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a quick drink with some friends. Had no issues getting a spot right at the bar and woman behind the taps was not only funny, but very helpful and attentive and is really the reason I liked the place so much! The place has great drink specials for happy hour, and besides the price they are also well made. I ordered the Grumpy Old Man, which for any old fashioned enjoyed I think will be delighted with what they get, although it's a little on the sweeter side. Didn't get the chance to try the food, but I sure was tempted with everyone ordering around us what seemed like really some good classic pub food. I heard about this place and it just so happened I wasn't working far so I stopped here after work to see what the hype was about for the $1 Oyster Happy Hr. I'm an oyster lover and I love finding a deal so I can indulge and I was really excited because you usually don't find a happy hour that last this long in NYC. I ordered a couple of drinks too Mezcal Margaritas, which were really good. I really don't have any complaints, aside from when I was a little disappointed because my waitress forgot to let me know that the drinks I ordered weren't on happy hour, but aside from that it was a good vibe. I ordered about .2 dozen oysters and they were amazing and I ordered some fries that were really good. Overall the service was also very friendly and I enjoyed the outdoor seating. Awful service from start to finish. We were a party of two. We were specifically asked if we wanted everything at once, and we clearly said no - appetizers first. Yet only 10 minutes into our appetizers, our entrées were rushed to the table while we were still eating, and staff removed our chilled oyster tray before we were finished, telling us to pile the oysters onto tiny appetizer plates so they could squeeze the entrées onto the table. After I complained, the waitress never returned to tend our table, and we had to flag down the manager for utensils for the entrées that they rushed out, while another staff member had to give us the check and ring us out. Management was dismissive and very argumentative instead of helpful. Such a horrible dining experience. My appetite after that encounter was gone. WE ARE SOOOO COMING BACK HERE. I am so happy we found this gem. We were in Flatiron at 9 pm on a Saturday night, long after traditional happy hours. In a desperate bid to satisfy my craving for oysters tonight, I looked up "cheap oysters". A 10 minute walk took us to John Doe. Guys. The website is not lying. Oysters are $1 each, all day everyday. This place closes at 4 AM?? EVERYDAY??? It sounded too good to be true, but I promise you it is. It is. Ok well, the only thing is you're required to order a drink and buy a minimum of 6 oysters. But whatever that's not hard at all. I enjoyed a nice beer with my 18 oysters. It was actually so good. I love oysters. I loved this place too. It was surprisingly not extremely crowded or loud or overwhelming. Don't get me wrong- there were tons of people and the music was booming. Great, great music. I'm 21 btw. Music made me wanna shimmy my body with my oysters in hand. I didn't have any issues talking and being able to hear from across the table. Energy inside this place was impeccable. I'm still riding the high of finding this amazing spot. I wouldn't worry about being able to be seated at a table inside, or calling ahead for reservations, or none of that. We ordered 12 oysters which were pretty good, and we had some garlic and herb wings as well because it was wing Wednesday. Wings were $1.5 and the oysters $1 each. On Tuesdays, they have a Taco Tuesday special where a pair of tacos are somewhere between $5 and $6. Though they are a bit on the smaller side, they are pretty good. Mondays they have a beer and a burger deal. The service can be a little slow especially because it is often crowded, but they're always friendly, though sometimes, they are a little frantic. Went to this place this past Halloweekend Friday and it was awesome! If you're looking for festive holiday atmosphere, this place goes IN, which is exactly what we were looking for (I expect to be back during other holiday times to see how their seasonal decor changes). It was surprisingly chill that night, and this place has ample space, tables, and bar room. The Spring in Your Step (with LAVENDER!) was my cocktail of choice for the night. We also sampled the Catcher in the Rye, STRONG but SMOOTH. Shout out to Terrell, the AWESOME bartender who took care of our group that night, though the other bartenders were VERY friendly and awesome as well ;) Food prices are a little high for a bar in my opinion, BUT, you won't be disappointed in taste or portion size. HIGHLY recommend the crispy mac n cheese bites. Not a lot of places can REALLY pull these off, but their's were DELICIOUS, perfect dark brown crisp on the outside, excellent consistency on the inside, and so FLAVORFUL (I've had some bland, meh mac n cheese bites). AND they have a side of BREAD AND BUTTER for $3. BASIC AF? YES, but also so satisfying AND they give you a generous amount of butter, EASILY spreadable, so no surface of your bread goes untouched. 09/21/23: Went for Happy Hour gathering. Basically typical bar scene. Very lively and loud. There's standard table and booth seating, bar stool seating and sidewalk dining. Servers so friendly and engaging. Although quite busy wait isn't very long for drinks and food. They really hustle. As I went to merely hang out I ordered food to go. People..those chicken wings, ordered the BBQ Buffalo flavor soo good after work 2 days later I return for them again. Also ordered chicken quesadillas which my son thoroughly enjoyed. We stopped here for happy hour drinks and then came back two nights after fir a late night dinner. I tried both the John Doe Lager and John Doe Ale and loved both. $1 oysters happy hour during the weekend?! My friends and I have a Sunday funday where we have happy hour and $1 oysters. Usually at Grey Lady, but we like to mix it up. I pass this place every saturday on my way back home from the gym in Flatiron. However, I did not think much about it. A friend suggested this place one day and we went. $1 oysters no complaints. As long as they have been cleaned out well and I am not biting down on dirt, it is good. There is much food variety and the items we got were just okay. The drink happy hour is fine for what it is, but for someone that does not drink beer or California wine, it is not worth it. This is the truth!! We came in on a humble just walking these mean streets and came across this tex-mex gem. Firstly we were greeted with a smile and awesome attitude.
