What a wonderful surprise find! I live not too far from here and was just walking in the neighborhood and saw the sign for $1 oysters, which are my fave so I decided to give it a try. Their happy hour wine ( red) was excellent and the waiter was thoughtful enough to let me taste it first ( I don't always enjoy wine so I was hesitant) which made a big impact and impressed me very much. He didn't seem at all enjoyed and I has the feeling that he really cares. Then, when I opened the menu, I was absolutely delighted and thrilled to see so many gluten free ( and clearly marked) items on the menu! Esp since it wasn't the usual. I asked about the mac and cheese vs the vodka pasta and was steered by my waiter towards the vodka pasta, and he was right! It was perfect! I really, really loved it and the pasta was cooked perfectly.. the sauce was very flavorful as he said and it just really hit the spot! Thank you! I was also delighted to get gluten free garlic bread ( what a treat; it was sooo good) and the side of grilled chicken was cooked perfectly too! The portion was pretty filling ( I'm not a big eater and am excitedly looking forward to my leftovers tomorrow) and the whole meal just made me so happy! Between the garlic bread, vodka pasta and the red wine, I felt like I was almost allergy free ! It's been so long since I felt that way and I really appreciate it.:) The other waiter impressed me with his knowledge of the menu ( and his warm friendliness) and the information about how seriously they take allergies. He told me they have a separate gluten free fryer and take gluten, mushroom, shellfish etc allergies very seriously..as the various members of staff have didfent allergies themselves. What a nice surprise! you cousi see how proud he was of their care and quality of food. It was heartwarming. Also, he highly recommended the Irish food and as a son of Irish immigrants, he proudly told us they were very authentic and that the chef was irish too! I can only hope that they can one day make a gluten free fish and chips and other irish delights too:) The city is really in need of that..hint, hint:) We couldn't be happier and the buffalo chicken wrap was hit too, although we suggest getting the dressing on the side if you prefer a lightly dressed salad. It was nice to have the choice of a healthy salad or decadent french fries. I'm so happy my dining partner went the healthy route: and that was an option;) They have covered outdoor seating, which is dog and warm weather friendly and the interior is cozy and comfortable with dark leather booths. The bathrooms are clean, the service is top notch and the food and wine was excellent! it's a great spot ( though I would prefer a homemade mignon sauce ) and ESPECIALLY if you're gluten free it's anincredible treat! The pasta and garlic bread made me want to tear up with gratitude it was so special. The prices are reasonable too. What started out as an oyster treat turned into one of the best NYC neighborhood discoveries we've had in a long time! Do yourself a favor and try it for yourself. Wow! This place has been around for years and somehow we had no idea? I proposed meeting up with J for a pre-MoMA Saturday brunch and it was absolutely empty. No complaints about scoring the two-top in the front window, granting unobstructed people-watching out toward 5th Ave. We started our meal with a half dozen oysters and probably should have ordered more, considering they're just $1 a pop. Dollar oysters all day errrrrrday -- where can you find that anywhere in Manhattan these days?! We learned from a friendly fellow that the oysters are flown in fresh daily from the Chesapeake Bay. Having just been down by Solomons Island not a month earlier, I have to say that these are superior to the local oysters we had while we were there. We shared the Jane Doe salad with beets and feta cheese, along with the breakfast BLT. It turns out the BLT is an open-faced sandwich, which I wasn't expecting -- akin to a croque madame. It was hearty, filling, and I plowed through the home fries that came on the side. I'd definitely love to go back for a happy hour to take advantage of the oysters and some beers. Even though I'm not a huge oyster person, I enjoy sampling them as a novelty and J can make a whole meal out of them. John Doe invited us back to try the oysters again and I must say the oysters have improved leagues since the last time I've been by only a month or so ago! It's hard to find a good place for $1 oysters and I came to terms with that I probably wouldn't find a go-to spot in the city for HH, but I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area to take advantage of the deal here! Aside from the oysters, the menu has a great (and huge) variety of comfort food for brunch and lunch. The fries are super satisfying in terms of flavor and crunch, we loved both the truffle parmesan fries and the sweet potato fries. As a side note, the buffalo chicken wrap is the actual best buffalo chicken wrap I've had. I normally don't love eating meat (it's a texture thing) but the preparation and flavor of the sauce in the wrap and the breading or whatever was happening with the chicken inside the wrap was top notch. I think the Mac could've been cooked a little longer...it was a tad bit soupy but very flavorful...and the oysters were great. Had a mimosa to quench my thirst Ps they offer complimentary mimosa during brunch BUT it's I ly for the brunch entrees not for the snacks... I have come here on a Tuesday night after dinner and I was super bummed to learn they have a Taco Tuesday with a $6 margarita special! They also have happy hour daily from 11am-8pm. This time around, we came here for brunch and it was pretty great. They have outdoor dining available, but we opted to sit inside due to the heat. I had the hangover burger, which was pretty good. My wife had previously ordered a quesadilla which we highly recommend if you can ask for it. Overall I would come here again and again. It was absolutely delicious, the homemade fries were wonderful, and I loved the aioli they offered me as a dipping sauce for my fries. Heard about their happy hour from a friend and decided to give this place a try! Came here on a Thursday evening at 6:30pm and it was super packed! Also sooo loud. As expected of a bar though. Would recommend requesting a seat outside if you're trying to have a conversation without screaming at each other. They had a Thursday special for $3.50/slider. 1 order comes with 2 sliders and both sliders must be the same flavor. I tried their "All-American burger" which is the average cheeseburger. The patty was nicely cooked with a pink center. Maybe next time i'd try a different flavor. Now the oysters. Not the best oysters i've had, but for $1 it is worth the price. Very fresh and cold which I like. What I DIDN'T like was how skimpy they are with the cocktail sauce. We ordered 24 oysters and they gave us a small sauce container that was only HALF filled. We asked for extra cocktail sauce which they said is an extra charge which we were okay with. And yet again, they bring out another sauce container that is half filled. Just look at the photo guys, I am not even making this up. I was also surprised at the extra charge considering we were not even given much sauce for 24 oysters to begin with. And I really do recommend using the sauce because they're quite bitter/bland without it. We also tried the Shepherd's Pie which consisted of grounded beef with a top layer of mashed potatoes. My aunt found this place on instagram from an influencer, and while it's great that they have $1 oysters all day long every day, the oysters were just ok. They skimp on the sauces and if you ask for more, it costs extra. We never got the extra cocktail sauce, but we were charged for it. 50 cents for extra sauce. We definitely did not need 3 dozen. John Doe was my first true dine out experience in New York City since March and John Doe definitely didn't disappoint. I really can't write a review that highlights all aspects of the restaurant but I can talk about the customer service, food and the overall outdoor dining experience. First and foremost, the day my friend and I decided to venture out for dinner in the city, we got caught in a torrential downpour and to our delight they had a place for us to sit with oversized umbrellas. My hats off to management for making sure all bases were covered. As for our meals, we both had the burger and fries and for the appetizer we enjoyed some dry rubbed wing which were superb. Please try the Old Bay rub, it absolutely delicious. The burgers were cooked to perfection and I might add the bottle of wine we had was excellent as well. A big south out to our waitress who did an amazing job attending to our needs and making sure our experiences was nothing short of amazing. We had only gotten the oysters because that's what we came for. There's a limit to 24 per order. As soon as it arrived, it looked pretty good. The sizing was pretty big. Food- 4/10 because oysters were filled up with water and there were bits of sand in some still. With every bite I took, there were some bits of the shell left on there. Really made it unappetizing. So the whole time there, I struggled to hear people and ensure I was being listened to. One of my classmates made a reservation, so it might be recommendable to make a reservation to ensure a table if you come with a group. I only had one beer and noticed the menu is pretty standard. Prices were reasonable, service was good, and the offerings of food were also affordable.
