If you are staying in the hotel, check this place out for snacks. The hummus was good. The wings and pizza were below average. Wings were small and undercooked. The pizza was cooked perfectly but the ingredients were strictly rationed. I will post my picture. We ordered the Joe Cain pizza. It had literally one small piece of chicken and a mushroom slice on each piece. From the way it was promoted, we expected more. Service was slow and somewhat apathetic. So we were stuck at the hotel an extra day because of hurricane Barry. We went down stairs to grab a bite during one of the downpours. They had a great variety of dishes. But if you have a dumb picky eater in your group (me), they will not enjoy it. Service was good. The servers were super friendly and always there to refill your drink or whatever you may need. The part that I really disliked was the fact that people brought their dogs into the restaurant. I did not enjoy the constant barking. Or the fact people had their dogs, not just in the floor, but up at the table. I'm not a dog hater by any means, but getting flea bit while trying to eat your shrimp is a bit much. My wife and one other actually had flea bites. It seems to me that would violate at least a few health codes. The bar was top notch. The people were great. The dogs barking and trying to fight under the tables turned me off. If the people and service were not so good, it would have gotten 1 or 2 less stars. read more

In my book this place ranks in #1 as "funky". Something about the place just makes me think of that exact word. One my 1st visit I felt sort of out of place, Service was not attentive or enthusiastic. BUT I had some sort of fabulous decadent martini and the vibe started to grab me. I heard the cool background music and appreciated the view of passers-by. Then we all relaxed and studied the menu, drinks in hand. We decided to go here when the restaurant we were going to was packed. I ordered the Pimento BLT with pepper jelly and my BF ordered the pork tacos. The BLT was different....it was good just not something I think I would ever crave and I love any variation of BLTs. It was also very messy as were the tacos. Tacos were good but not fantastic. Plus it was a little pricy for the quality. I guess because it is attached to the Battle House hotel. If we go again I think I would go for their pizza instead. Don't waste your time. I was super confused by Joe Cains...the restaurant was really pretty and attached to the very elegant Battle House hotel, but the food was served on styrofoam with plastic forks and knives. The server looked completely disheveled, and then forgot about our drink order only to get a wild stare from her when we reminded her. When we did finally get our food, I was sorely disappointed to discover that my salad was merely a pile of chopped ice berg lettuce with browning edges. Do yourself a favor and walk a couple blocks up Dauphin for food and service that blows this place out of the water. read more

The food was mediocre, and was slow to get to us- but our waitress was really kind and I could tell she was busting her butt to keep up with the patrons. Had Thanksgiving lunch with my family here before boarding the cruise ship for Mexico. While the crowd was light, the service was top-notch; never had to wait for our drinks to be refilled, and she had suggestions for us to burn time while waiting for our boarding appointment. The flatbreads are absolutely enormous!! Definitely large enough for 2-4 people to share; we ordered a pepperoni and bacon 'make your own' and it was perfect! The cheese is incredible, and they cook the pie so it's crispy but not overly charred. I ordered a Caesar salad $8- it's your typical.. pretty tasty and large in size. Daddy got the gumbo and half a shrimp poboy. The gumbo has chicken and sausage in it and is good but not the best he's had. Momma got the pimento cheese dish with naan bread and thinks it is absolutely delicious. There are plenty of TVs here as well to watch multiple games but a mix between sports and family cafe. read more

I ended up eating here by default... I was in Mobile this past weekend for a wedding and arrived on Friday. I was staying at the Battle House right next door and after unpacking, hitting the gym, and cleaning up, it was already 8:30 PM! I ventured out to find some food and wanted something quick, easy, light, and to-go so I could go back to the hotel and rest up before I partied hardy the next evening at the wedding... So, note to all you travelers and late eaters... a lot of the near by places close by 9 PM on Friday evening. Quiznos was closed, Subway was closed... wahhhhhhhh. so i went back to Joe Cain since it was nearby and it was open. Yay~ or so i thought... I ordered a shaved prime rib panini... and it was not really a panini... (unless they make different paninis down in Alabama). The "panini" was basically a warmed up sandwich on ciabatta bread... and the shaved prime rib was really greasy. And the ratio of bread to meat was not proportional (as you know, ciabatta bread is pretty thick). Yay for being open and quick/easy... but the food was not so good. I would not recommend the paninis... but maybe their pizza and other items are better?? read more

I've been to this restaurant three different times and was pleased every single time. Since I have family in Mobile, we usually go here when we're in town. I've gone during Father's Day weekend, Mardi Gras, and at the beginning of Summer and can say nothing but good things. This restaurant would not receive any stars from me if it were possible. The service at Joe Cain was absolutely terrible. Upon entering the restaurant on 3/22, we were not greeted at all. We waited at the entrance before seating ourselves in hopes of being serviced. After about 20 minutes of patiently waiting, I asked the lady at the register if we could get a server. She replied, "Oh, you can order here". Not too long after, several other guests came in and one of the servers immediately tended to them by cleaning their table and the other took their order (after just telling us we could order at the register) . I made eye contact with the server serveral times and she ignored us. After patiently waiting for at least 30 minutes, we decided to leave. very slow service ...don't ask you if you need anything.. don't ask you if you would like a refill.. don't come back to your table. They will bring you your check.. but very slow to process .. If you have plently of time to waste..its fine but takes about 5-15 minutes to even be noticed to receive a menu.. then another 5-15 minutes to place your drink order (be ready then to put you food order in don't wait till the drinks arrive even if it's tea, soda's or water... that will be another wait) Check you food cause they don't check the order to make sure its correct. (esp. if you have food allergies and stated that)... Sip your drinks.. cause it will be at the end of your meal if they even come back to your table when they bring you your bill that you might get a refill! The shrimp and grits are delicious! There are a bunch of televisions with everything from children's movies to sports playing. There is a variety of foods. The pizza is also fantastic. The staff is very curious and caters to your every need. That's right boys and girls - Joe Cain is THE MAN who resurrected Mardi Gras in Mobile after the Civil War. He's a local hero! I guess he's a hero for anyone who enjoys Mardi Gras. Now that we've had our little history lesson - I have had lunch and lunch "take out" here a couple of times since they opened - they are right across the street - very convenient. Good ambience because of the location....and the name.....and the picture of "Joe Cain as Slacabamorinico" (Wikipedia will tell you everything you need to know). Probably a good place to watch a football game. And it would be an ideal place to watch a Mardi Gras parade (I'm sure everybody else has figured that out too - so I wouldn't count on it). But the food..............skip it.....unless you've got the munchies while enjoying a cocktail or beer. I've had better food on airplanes - that should tell you all you need to know. So - if you've made it this far in this "not really a restuarant review but a history lesson/restaurant review".....then I'll tell you that you should still go there. Stayed a The the Battle Renaissance Hotel in Mobile AL. An attached lounge is called the Joe Cain Cafe. Wife and I stopped for a nightcap around 10 pm. Place didn't look very busy. There were 4 bartenders on a bar that seated maybe 15. half the seats were empty. After waiting at the bar for 10 minutes, I needed to force eye contact and summon a bartender. 2 orders, house cab and draft beer. Order filled in another 10 minutes after another bartender asked if we'd been helped. Finally, we get served. Check comes and they double charged us. First and last visit. read more

The food here is always awesome. It pains me to write that. No one can refute their pizza's are wonderful, and the nachos are awesome. If they can, they shouldn't be trusted for any other food/restaurant advice. Their customer service however is absolutely HORRID. I'm willing to wait for good food granted, but calling in your order early so it's ready when you get there is impossible. They immediately pick up and ask you to hold. 10 minutes later when you hang up and call back assuming they forgot about you, they say the same thing. Stating no you will not wait, the only answer they can give you is that they just need a minute to put lemons in a bowl... o.0 When you actually visit and place a to go order, to avoid said waiting on the phone, they take your order and let you sit there never notifying you your order is ready. So basically you have to gauge how long YOU think it takes them to make your food then go ask if it's ready. Finally, eating in. The food takes FOREVER to make it to you. (Good thing to keep in mind with the above option of ordering to go - no matter how long you wait, it still might not be ready...) And the wait staff are quite possibly the worst people I've ever dealt with in my entire life. And of course you can't say anything to them for fear of your food being 'vengefully altered' in some way. If this place wasn't IN the building I work in and I never had a rainy day where I could walk somewhere else, I'd never eat here again. I'd be willing to fore-go the good food for maybe somewhere with smiling staff that don't act like it's the customer's fault for waiting on food. read more

Ate here with a large group of eight, we arrived a little after 1pm so it was kinda empty. I started with some hummus as an appetizer. There was enough to share for about 3-4 people. The hummus comes served on a bed of arugula, and is sprinked with generous chunks of feta cheese and had some roasted tomatoes and kalamata olives. It's served with some cut up toasted pita and some french bread rounds. I had the chicken & brie sandwhich, it was just Ok and could have used a little mayo or something on the bread. I also thought the bun was a bit fat so it was a little too much bread for the sandwich. It is served with your choice of kettle chips, pasta salad or fresh fruit. I had the fruit which was good. My son had the Turkey club which he enjoyed quite a bit. The other folks had a pizza which looked quite yummy. There are also about a dozen TVs in the place, throughout the place (my son counted) so if you wanted a place to watch a game you probably could. The only reason I gave it a three is because the food is awesome (once you finally receive it). Today's lunch was an experience. We were a party of 4. Two got there early and there order was taken promptly. We arrived 8 minutes after they did. I had to walk in because we sat outside and let the waitress know we were there. No big deal. She comes and takes out order. I realized that she did not ask what type of dressing we wanted on our salad so after 10 minutes I walked in. They were not that busy, maybe 5 tables had people and there was two waitresses. A very nice manager brought us our drinks because we had not received any. She verified our order and delivered all of our food. Once we all finished our meal, we waited for our tickets. Finally we have to go inside and ask for them. I decide then to complain to the manager because at this point we had been there an hour and never saw a waitress after our order was taken. The waitress behind the bar was very snappy when I asked to speak to a manager. Yes, she was the one that took my order. When a manager did not come, I asked someone else for a manager. By this time the sous chef came out and asked what was wrong. I explained what we were upset about. The waitress was making smart remarks and discussing us to the couple at the bar. I told her she needed to keep her remarks to herself. She told me I could just leave. So, the manager hears all of this and comps our meal. The food was delicious but the service is horrible. I went with a group, which had reservation. When we arrived, they were completely shocked by our extremely premature arrival of 10 minutes. I ordered my food and when I received it, there was paper baked into the bottom of it. I tried to remove it and some of it come off. When I pointed this out to the server, she acted totally confused and befuddled. She did not offer to replace or discount the inedible portion of my meal. Also, the guy next to me never got his appetizer. I shared with him and when he asked the server about it, she apologized and said she thought he asked for "sweet tea". I'll be honest, after reading some of these reviews I had pretty low expectations for this hotel eatery. But I was staying here over Labor Day weekend and needed somewhere to watch the Auburn game. It was on SEC network, which wasn't available in the rooms. Luckily, Joe Cain's was playing the game, so we settled in and ordered a few beers. Service was EXCELLENT!! As soon as I finished a drink they were quickly there to offer a fresh one. All of our drinking worked up an appetite, so we ordered the Spinach & Feta pizza, which was served on a super thin crust. I loved it--especially dipped in ranch dressing. Their wings were DELICIOUS! I am a huge wing lover, so I wasn't expecting much here. I was pleasantly surprised that they were plump portions with a little charring on them. The buffalo sauce packed quite a punch, too. We went back two more times for late night snacks/drinks. They even delivered some wraps over to the Tavern next door, since we wanted to play chess over there. Again, I can't say enough good things about the service here. There are so many better places to eat in Mobile. We ordered the artichoke and "crab" (although we didn't find one piece of crab) dip for an appetizer. It was watery, cold and covered with cheese. We hoped that the prosciutto pizza would be better based on reviews online but that was not good either. The meat tasted old and wasn't even prosciutto. I would not recommend this restaurant. Save your money and go to one of the other restaurants in downtown Mobile! There are so many better places to choose from!! read more

We were greeted upon entering which was great. We had two orders of nachos-one with shrimp and one with chicken. The cheese was all over the chicken and the shrimp. That is not a deal breaker it just took away from the taste of the chicken and the shrimp. The nachos were burned. This has happened in the past but I thought the last time was just a fluke. Both orders had burned nachos. Perhaps they can prepare the cheese separate and place it in the center as opposed to preparing it all together.
