I was looking for a gluten free or eggless cake for my mom's 60th birthday! I found jodycakes through Yelp! And reached out via website- she contacted me the next day! I was losing hope of finding someone who's be free in a weeks time but I spoke to her over the phone and notified her of what I was looking for. We settled on an eggless cake Italian cream cake- I emailed her all the information as she asked me to. She was very good at communication and making adjustments and customizing cakes!! We settled on a pickup time and the pickup was super quick! Go in grab the cake and leave. The payment was due a day before for me online and the price I thought was very fair. Highly recommend especially if someone is vegan, gluten free, has any allergies! read more

Unfortunately there is not an option for zero stars because that's what I would give. This lady is unprofessional and seems to be very unorganized. Don't bother wasting your money or time. I wish I would have listened to the reviews before wasting my time and energy on a 40 min drive from Cypress. Jody is very defensive and lacking in the customer service category. read more

First time ordering a custom cake (in general) for a 3 year old's birthday so I wasn't sure what to expect. Originally inquired about cupcakes for his class (need to be purchased and not homemade) but then remembered belatedly that the school doesn't allow frosting so switched to a cake for personal consumption since we already went through the effort of talking about it over a week or two. I was THRILLED to hear there's a custom baker who accommodates special diets. THANK YOU!! My son is allergic to wheat, peanuts, most tree nuts, avocado, eggs, kiwi, and pineapple. We ended aiming for a gluten-free, vegan, 8-inch, 2 layered chocolate cake with vanilla frosting and sprinkles around the base. I mentioned not going too sweet, as we're used to Asian style birthday cakes or European if they're not homemade, but I knew that Jody makes American style cakes so I didn't have high expectations. If you don't know what Asian birthday cakes are, they're not that sweet. Two light sponge cakes with a whipped cream middle often with some other add in (fruit, taro paste, pudding [think flan], or even durian) and covered in a light whipped cream "frosting" and often topped with fresh fruit and hand lettering in red gel. As you can tell, not much room for food allergies - or much sugar - so I usually make his baked treats myself (and reduce the amount of sugar by 1/4 to 1/3) or, as I did in this instance, go to Jody. Communication was straightforward and easy. First through the website and continued via emails then phone calls and texts as pick up loomed near. Jody is great! She was professional and to-the-point but also flexible in regard to pick up, especially with a birthday on New Year's Eve. Listened to my ideas and didn't really suggest beyond that but that's fine. She has a bakery where you'll pick up from so she doesn't work out of a home kitchen (my sister once had a birthday where a friend bought a vegan cake from Jody a decade ago and she worked from home, or so I heard). She is BUSY though so expect some time between responses but she'll be more present as the deadline approaches. What I got looked great! Some of the piped frosting on top sort of went over the edge and there was no writing on top (I sort of thought it was a given but in hindsight, I remember her mentioning keeping it blank on top for candles and I agreed so maybe that's why it's blank? He's turning 3 though... no need for that much room. Hahaha), but no worries. No one else mentioned it. Now the cake itself! Jody mentioned the cake will be garbanzo bean (chickpea) based. The cake itself wasn't that sweet and I actually liked it. It is denser and the bean taste reminded me of certain Asian bean dessert pastes - that is to say it's not grainy like some GF baked goods/pastas can be. Which is great. Because my toddler hates grainy things. He ate the cake! Until he got the frosting and stopped eating it. He enjoys sweets (think dark chocolate) but the frosting might be the sweetest thing he's had in his life so far and he doesn't like things that are too sweet. The frosting is not in a thick layer at all, but it's so sweet. I know the ingredients of frosting and I know it's mostly powdered sugar but I forget many do use all the sugar (but it does hold its shape out of the fridge, so I'll give you that). LOL. Out of the 8 people there, 2 thought the entire cake was too sweet and heavy and couldn't eat more than 2 bites. My sister and I and a friend who are familiar with American sweetness levels were prepared with a cup of [oat] milk. The others only ate the cake part. In hindsight, perhaps I should have asked for a naked cake. Even so, I don't fault Jody. It's just a matter of taste and the fact we're not used to it. And, like I mentioned, I quite liked the cake (I often put a tiny chocolate chip sized bit of frosting on every bite) even though I'm not the biggest fan of Asian bean desserts, ironically. Excellent dunked in milk. I certainly recommend and I'm glad there's a place to go to for any baked good needs with someone with food allergies/special diets. It's nice to not make a birthday [cup/cake for once, so thank you for the break! read more

Since going dairy and gluten free due to healthcare recommendations, finding a bakery who specializes in such cakes was a bit of challenge. We found Jody and her cakes did not disappoint! We had her make my 30th birthday cake and she did a phenomenal job with the style and vision I had, in addition to her having wonderful suggestions and helping me create my styled cake. Jody did a great job for my custom GF vegan chocolate bday cake. She can do almost any design and custom makes the cake to whatever you want. You can pick up or get delivered. All of my friends didn't notice it was vegan or GF and devoured it!!! It was so good and the vegan buttercream was awesome Will be coming here for all future cake inquiries and sending all my friends Jody's way!! Placed order online. Email states to call to make sure there is availability. I call at 10:30am since google states office hours state open at 10am. Jody answers while in her car annoyed that I called wondering why I am calling when her email template instructs you to do so. The conversation does not get better as she is very unprofessional. Not sure cakes are good or not but there are other vendors that sell good vegan cakes that are more professional. read more

Jody made a three-tiered wedding cake for us: 2 tiers were her epic fresh/natural strawberry with strawberry filling, and one tier was delicate lemon with a lemon curd type filling. There really isn't much else to say except that you should hire Jody with caution. After eating her cakes, you will be ruined forever when it comes to cake. No cake will ever compare to a Jody cake. Wedding planning was a huge pain in the rear for me. 10 out of 10, do not recommend. Elope folks. Do it for your sanity. However, out of all the decision I was tasked to make, I knew immediately that I wanted Jody Cakes' creations for the special day. I hadn't had Jody Cakes' creations until our tasting and consultation with her as she lacks a store front (hopefully not for much longer!) and I hadn't had a reason to place a cupcake order because I actually don't have much of a sweet tooth. I just KNEW that I had to have Jody Cakes because I've heard and read such amazing things about her cakes and cupcakes. Also, well, I'm vegan, and there were a handful of celiacs and gluten intolerant people attending my wedding, one with an anaphylactic soy allergy, so Jody Cakes just made sense for my particular needs! I chatted with Jody, whom is very personable btw, via email and phone and requested simple and familiar cupcake variations and we met up at a Starbucks to sample vanilla, fruit-filled, chocolate, and gluten-free cupcakes. We also talked through decor options (of which we didn't really elect for - silver cupcake liners was about as fancy as I get) and presentation ideas. Jody isn't able to furnish cupcake and display stands, which was a bit of a bummer. But y'all - Any Occasion Party Rental on Bissonnet - they have you covered! We moreover decided on inclusion of spiced cupcakes after tasting all the cupcakes, which were still quite moist and delicious despite being a day old and slightly melted. We continued to keep in touch up until the wedding. Jody accepts checks, which I sent through mail (P.S. Send registered mail and avoid the additional headache I sustained). You might need to call AND email Jody if it's a particularly busy time of year for her, but she does always respond/confirm and send updates. On the day of the wedding, the cupcakes looked uniformly marvelous and more importantly, they were delicious. Granted, I only consumed half of one due to nerves, but they were happily received and gobbled up. I may have over-ordered (264 cupcakes for 180 people), but better safe than sorry. I believe the cupcakes were $3/each for the vegan ones and a little more for the gluten and soy-free ones (as the ingredients are pricier). Definitely highly recommend Jody Cakes and would not hesitate to order from her again in the future! read more

I needed a vegan dessert for my son's 4thbirthday . Did a lot of googling and ended up deciding to go with Jodycakes because I saw some cute mini cupcakes in foil on her Yelp page. But when I got my order I realized I didn't specify the "mini" part. But I was ok with that since they were $36 and I thought maybe the minis would have been too small of a dessert. When I finally got to try the cupcake...mm, they were actually pretty good. I just got the vanilla since my son's bday cake was chocolate. Glad I did. Jody was really cool bc of some miscommunication she ended up taking my order on the same day she produced them. I was very appreciative. Super happy with my choice and the cupcakes. I read good reviews on the cakes here . As a person with celiacs , I was excited to try the gluten free cake as she got good reviews . The cake was horrible , it was one of the worst gluten free cakes I have had . It was dry and tasted freezer burnt . The cake was Definitely frozen prior and not fresh . Would not recommend, I have had way better gluten free cakes elsewhere . read more

The Cakes are good by the owner is so complicated to deal with. the 1st time I ordered I just took as, ..well maybe she is just going through difficult time, let go, 2nd time, a year later came to the conclusion she is just a mean lady, She wouldn't work with you, is her way only, very complicated to deal, some of those people who just make everything difficult, no mater how easy things are, is may way only because I am the center of the universe and I am busy and stressed, well guess what everyone is LOL. So now I have a different provider who is nice and have great cakes. NO RECOMMEND BECAUSE OF THE OWNER's LACK OF CARE FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. read more

Maybe it was just what I requested and not the whole business. I wanted a couple of gluten free cupcakes for a guest at my party. Jodycakes showed up in the search on Yelp. Yelp is my "go to" for all things. Jody is good at communicating via email. I had to buy an entire dozen at the cost of $33. Dozen had to be of same flavor. This makes each cupcake $2.75. Pick up was a specific window. Location is in less desirable neighborhood in unmarked bakery. I requested Pink Lemonade cupcakes. They were neither pink nor lemony. Definitely didn't make me pucker. read more

We hired Jody last year to provide cupcakes for our engagement party as well as the wedding and grooms cake at our wedding. We didn't have any dietary restrictions, however, we had a child in the wedding party with Coeliac disease. It was pretty awesome to be able to give him a gluten free cupcake when the cake was served and not have him feel left out. Jody was totally cool about making that happen. She is, from what I can tell, a one-woman show, so when she really gets busy she can appear to be a bit scattered. However, she delivered on time and everything looked and tasted amazing, so if you catch her on the phone at a bad time know that everything will turn out right in the end. Hopefully as her business grows she can maybe hire a personal assistant. But you're always talking to the person who's making your food, and you're always talking to someone with a passion for baking, and sometimes you can only get that feeling from talking to the owner directly. read more

For my fiancee's birthday I ordered a vegan and gluten-free Texas red velvet sheet cake from Jody's cakes. He is not vegan, but I am. I prefer not to feel left out at celebrations when I don't eat the standard cake (containing milk, eggs, butter). The birthday party had 15+ attendees, all normally standard cake-eaters, and none of them recognized it was a vegan and gluten-free cake. The guests raved about the rich taste, the moist cake, and the decadent (sweet but not too sweet) frosting. It wasn't until the end of the party that I shared it was vegan, and all of them wanted Jody's contact information! Sometimes animal-free food choices get a negative reputation for a not-so-great taste. Not Jody's cakes! I'm glad I was able to serve a delicious animal-free cake and everyone (including me) was able to enjoy it. The sharing of food is a first step to begin to open minds to different sorts of lifestyles. I talked with Jody over the telephone to put in my order. She advised how much and what style of cake to have for the party. She provided updates about pick-up times leading up to the day of the event. I picked up the cake the day of the event at her bakery. All of it was quite a simple process! The next time I want a cake that my guests will fawn over and that meets a variety of dietary needs, I will be calling Jody! read more

I contacted Jody about making a gluten-free cake for my boyfriend's 30th birthday and she was great to work with. I told her some of my ideas and she made a few suggestions on what she thought would work best. She recommended that I stop by Revival Market in the Heights and try a slice of the gluten-free chocolate cake to get an idea of how it tastes (she delivers there weekly). Naturally, eating a slice of chocolate cake in the name of "research" was not a problem for me. The slice I had at Revival was amazing and I was instantly sold! I knew I'd be making the right decision and couldn't wait to see how she executed my vision. Jody and I spoke again a few days leading up to the birthday party and she kindly offered to drop it off at the restaurant for me, which worked out perfectly! It was so nice to show up and have the cake already waiting for us. After dinner when the cake was served, nobody could believe it was gluten free! Everybody kept saying how delicious it tasted. I'll definitely be ordering all my future cakes from Jody again. It was a 5-star experience! read more

I had been hoping to try a vegan cake from JodyCakes for years and when the stars aligned for me to finally do so for my graduation, I was ecstatic. Granted this review is close to a month overdue, but when I tell you my non-vegan-whatsoever family and friends are still asking "was the cake vegan" and "who made the cake," I would be remiss to not leave a review of how complete the cake my entire experience. I knew for sure that I wanted a cake that represented my school colors of maroon and white but that was also still flavorful and popular enough of a flavor for everyone to be pleased. I ordered a vanilla creme filled red velvet sheet cake that would feed about 35 with vanilla buttercreme icing and maroon trim and lettering. To put it plainly, Jody had to have but both feet and legs in this masterful creation because when cake cutting time came, I almost didn't get any, and it was MY CAKE. That's just how moist and delicious it was! All in all, the service and product were equally impeccable as Jody was patient with me throughout the whole process and the cake brought back fond memories of my special day with each bite. We've tried it Hotlanta style twice and this is our first time getting it Buffalo. It's executed well every time. I will say the prices are higher than expected for a food truck and for the portions. We've got the Magic City Chikn Sandwich with Oyster Mushrooms and the HAV Classic Chicken Sandwich, they only put 1 slim piece of the mushroom on it, both times. Mind you, that meal is damn near $22 with the upgrade. It is good but for the prices, they should offer the soy free options for free. The ambiance is cool. The truck is located in a cute little parking lot. The service is cool, we never really had any issues or instances where we had to encounter them. The last two times we ordered were via online. My rating.... The Mo'City Mac Bowl is the best on the menu and consistent. I HIGHLH RECOMMEND it.

You order online hosted by hot plate and pick up at your scheduled time/date at their house. I ordered it but someone else picked up around 2 hours later. You get an automated text when it's ready and you text when you're there. For special requests, you can call/text the number as well; he was pretty helpful and responsive and mentioned to my brother in law that he personally made sure everything had no alliums at pick up. As a note: my family consists of allium-free vegetarians (with one vegan) so we asked ahead of time what our options were before we went for it. He (I really should have gotten his name) gave us a list of rolls that could be made allium free and we chose from them so you could say they do have an allium free menu upon request. We pretty much got almost everything on his list. For 5 adults, we ordered a total of 10 rolls: LOW-KEY LOKI (2) CLASSIC SPICY TUNAH (2) NIKCO ROCK N ROLL SPICY MAMI, HOT TAMALE SPICY DRAGON FIRECRACKER (2) When we opened the boxes, it turns out that he included an extra roll of SPICY MAMI, HOT TAMALE as well as a small container of seaweed salad which I thought was really nice of him! Or maybe we spent too much or there's some buy 10 rolls get 1 free promotion I was unaware of, haha. It was an unexpected surprise. I also have 2 kids but one has multiple food allergies and the other one is picky. She wanted a sweet potato roll, but it's not on the menu so we rolled up some seaweed rice rolls for them ahead of time so they weren't left out. I didn't bring up my kids because we wanted to ease in with the allium free request and go from there. Plus, one of the food allergens is avocado and that was found in almost every roll. On that note, there's an option to make it gluten-free on each item's page, which is pretty awesome. There's also an option to use soy paper instead of seaweed and to add extra ingredients at additional cost. My family shared everything so my plate was a mix and I honestly lost track of what I was eating at the time for personal notes. But honestly? Everything was delicious. Sushi was the last thing I gave up before becoming vegetarian and I'm picky with the sushi I eat now. These are very good and I must say if I lived in Houston, I'd order again. I do wish there was a place to sit or picnic nearby, but this worked as well. (We all congregated at a house.) There was one roll that definitely had a kick to it. Oddly enough, SPICY MAMI was not it. My nose tends to run with spicy food and I didn't get to that point but it was close after that one spicy piece. Overall, a great experience. Our rolls were $8 to $17 each, 8 pieces per roll. It was around $27.20 per person before tips and tax/fees from hot plate ($7.35). They were nicely packed complete with edible orchid flowers, and personal cups of ginger and wasabi as well as chopsticks and soy sauce packets. We finished everything. This certainly wasn't cheap but when is sushi affordable enough to be a daily thing? I do wish there weren't service fees added on top, but I guess the platform needs support too. The AC worked well, and it was comfortable inside. The concrete floors might come across as "unfinished" or even dirty at first glance, but it felt more like part of the place's hip, industrial vibe. It's an older building with plenty of character. The person who took our order was very friendly and offered great recommendations.
