The Village Bakery was the answer to my every need this weekend! In creating a cake for my dad's 90th birthday, I needed it to be soy free, which no other baker would accommodate, even with weeks' notice. Richard, TVB owner, makes everything from scratch and has no soy in his products. He was able to leave out nuts from a carrot cake, the carrots were clearly fresh vegetables and in full evidence in each bite. The cake was unbelievably moist and perfectly spiced, with robust notes of cinnamon and a little clove. But beyond all these most important issues, Richard was able to pull off an all-edible design using a 3D printer, ganache and his own ingenuity and creativity. I asked him to create a law dictionary and add a school logo, as well a birthday greetings, all with 3 days' notice (I had given up for a while and found him with little time remaining). Everyone, especially my dad, was enchanted by his work! I cannot recommend The Village Bakery and its owner Richard highly enough. If you have a special occasion (or even an everyday baked good need), call on him. His prices are very reasonable and his products are best in class. read more

I have used this bakery many times, and they have always done a fabulous job. I am a consistent repeat customer. However, this last experience was horrible. I ordered a strawberry cake with chocolate icing for a birthday. What I received was not up to their normal standards. While it does not look like a strawberry cake....it didn't taste like one either. And I am not sure what that clump of white icing is. I'm not showing the top of the cake because of the name on it....but it was a sloppy job as well. When I called about the cake I received, I was told that there are freeze dried strawberries in the cake....which you cannot taste strawberry. As for the white glop of icing, I was told that they originally iced it white, then scraped it off and re-iced it. From the looks of it....they did a poor job at that as well. I was told that there was nothing that they could do for me. As a (previously) loyal customer, I guess I expected an apology, but was told 'it is what it is'. Price tag on this POS....$105. I can only comment on walk up holiday-related service at The Village Bakery, but my experience there was great. Having called ahead regarding Hamantaschen for a Purim celebration, I was delighted to find out the bakery had several flavors. I picked apricot and raspberry flavored Hamantaschen (not pictured). Both were delicious! Other cookies featured in the display case included St. Patrick's Day four-leaf clover cookies and post-Mardi Gras purple, green and yellow fleur de lis cookies. We were so happy to discover this app, Too Good To Go, a few days ago and to know it can help save food than let it go to waste. Today was our second experience with this app and The Village Bakery was beyond disappointing. We were shocked to received a two days old bread (the young cashier boy accidentally told me). This loaf of bread was tossed to a side table by the trash can area . "Is this it?" I asked to confirm and he said yes all I will received is two days old bread. The app shows it should be $12 worth of food but I only received a loaf of two day old stale bread? This is a dishonest business that use this app to sell their trash. I am asking for refund. WOW! Just WOW My boyfriend ordered a cake from here with simple instructions of a white cake saying congratulations on matching Dr. Jimenez! We expected something very simple and didn't have high expectations, but woah! I'll let the cake do the talking. They took the word doctor and ran with it and I couldn't be happier! Ok. Sent a pic and placed an order a few weeks before an event via telephone. Paid half. Went to pickup and the order looked nothing like the pictures I sent. This would have been ok had they at least listened to my request not to create a loud cake. Wanted subtle and softer colors. Specified NOT ORANGE given that I knew this would be the urge for a fall cake. Got an orange cake. A very large orange cake. They were supposed to make it ombré but softer than the pic sent. There was no gradient. Just orange. Deep deep orange lol. They tried to fix it, but it was obviously rushed. There were holes in the frosting. The edges were frayed. It was still orange. Proportions off. I was reasonable. I waited for thirty minutes hoping they'd fix it. They did their best I guess. I asked for a nominal discount given that I was paying a good amount (~$250) for a cake and cupcakes that completely didn't match anything I requested. The event was the same day. The owner was initially rude and told me it was a "perfectly good cake" and I could "just leave it and go elsewhere." I quickly corrected this ridiculousness. Asked him to pull up the pictures I emailed (a normal part of their process). Once he realized the mistake he softened which I appreciated but wish had come much sooner in the process. Of note , whenI entered and said good morning, no one responded. It took a few minutes to be greeted. They originally told me my cake wasn't ready. They didn't really pay attention to my name. I had to ask again a few minutes later for them to confirm. It was ready, just looked a mess. Not sure why they didn't look at the pics before? And very evident that they never even attempted to look at them when creating the cake. Why request that customers send pics. In the end he offered me a credit for a few dollars and took the 10% off that I asked for (which he initially refused), but I won't be back. Too much work for what should have been simple. My very first cake from them was a 30th bday cake for my fiancé's surprise party. The cake was beautifully made, but their were some issues in the transit that it got smudged and the delivery time. I drive past this bakery all the time. Today I decided to stop in and see what they have to offer. It's a small area in the front of the shop so there is enough for one guest or couple to enter safely and any others wait outside for covid safety. The young man happily greeted me as I walked in and kindly shared his favorite desserts after I asked him what was good. They explained all the types of bread they make and type of desserts they have. Everything looked well made and nice portion sizes. I ordered one dessert of the hamenstchan but was given two and charged for two. The kids in the front were a little disorganized and didn't know what pastry was which. I ordered four pies for Thanksgiving, apple, pecan, chocolate and coconut cream. When I picked them up I purchased additional assorted bars and cookies. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with this bakery. The apple pie was one of the best I have ever had, nothing was left of the pecan and coconut pie either. The chocolate pie was good, but was not the star the apple, pecan and coconut proved to be. The lemon bars were great and the pecan shortbread crescents and the gingerbread men were fabulous. The staff were very friendly and helpful - even during a busy holiday rush. I will DEFINITELY visit again and I have already been told to order our Christmas goodies from Village Bakery. Parking could have been a little better, and the bakery is small, but it is packed full with a mighty assortment of goodies - it is well worth a little inconvenience to pay them a visit. read more

Let me just say this: I am thankful to these folks at Village Bakery! I needed a unicorn cake the DAY OF and they came to the rescue. I spent all day calling different bakeries nearby for availabilities on a cake that had a unicorn design on it. Once I called TVB, Richard found a solution to my last-minute issue. Although at first he said it's not enough time to make one since we had 6 hours left for the party. Then later he said, "Well I have a plain, white 8 inch cake that I add a horn and ears to it." Regardless of imaging how it'd turn out, I ordered it. Based off of their reviews, I felt like I was going to be in good hands. Come pickup time, they proved me right! Cannot say enough good things about this place! We ordered a cake over the phone for my son's 7th birthday, requesting a shark cake that a 7 year old would find cool and scary. We don't live in Houston and we're sure what we would get, but the reviews were encouraging and the guys were great to deal with. They killed it, making a two-tiered cake that looks just like Jaws coming out of the water. They even threw a severed limb in the shark's mouth, along with lots of other great little touches. Hate to give this place a bad review as I've ordered and received many cakes in the past without issue or incident. On a recent order for a birthday cake, it wasn't ready when I arrived to pick it up. I had ordered it weeks in advance. Boy, did they give me attitude and blamed me for the issue! Meanwhile, half of the staff in back were sitting on their asses and I was told that they were working on rush orders. Three hours later, the cake was finally ready, but it looked horrible. The worst that I've ever gotten from them. The three hour delay put me in the midst of rush hour traffic. The cake was half melted and had slid to the side of the box by the time I arrived home. Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience with this bakery. I got a phone call 3/16 at 1:14 stating that my cake wouldn't be ready the day of the party until 4 o'clock when I was originally told 3. I said that would be fine, however, I'd have to send someone else to come and pick it up since I would be setting up for a birthday party set to start at 5pm. I asked for $10-20 off the cake (which I thought was reasonable) so I could give the person picking up the cake gas money. The guy that initially called me said he would ask the manager and would give me a call back. After not getting a returned call, I called the bakery at 2:25 and was then told by another baker "sorry but the manager said no". I asked to speak to the manager and he immediately gets on the phone and says "we'll issue you a refund" and hangs up on me. I then called back and told the manager how unprofessional it was to hang up on me. He proceeds to scream in the phone saying how I came into his bakery last minute/the week of wanting a cake and how his other customers order their cake weeks in advance. He continues to scream through the phone not letting me get one word in. After spewing out his frustrations with me, he then says "we'll have your cake ready at 3 and hangs up on me for a second time". Utter disbelief is an understatement. I then stopped what I was doing and arrived to the the bakery to pick up the cake at 3:01 and I hear the manger say "tell her 10 more minutes"... I didn't get the cake until 3:29 and sadly it wasn't presented with an apology, no money off, and no greeting or acknowledgment from the manager. The few bakers that I encountered at the front were all really nice so my displeasure is only towards the manager and has nothing to do with the actual cake. I went to Village Bakery on Wednesday March 13th and asked for a custom cake for Saturday March 16 which the bakery agreed to fulfill my order so if the manager was overwhelmed with orders and/or if it would be too last minute then that should've been conveyed to me. I would've accepted that and tried to find another bakery, simple. However, it was not, my order and deposit was gladly accepted. Don't add more onto your plate and get mad at the customer for wanting you to adhere to the original time provided. I do understand time may have become out of sight while working, therefore, the tardiness could've been offset had the manger met me with grace, calmness, and understanding of my request. Planning surprise parties can be very stressful and this absolutely added more stress and frustration. I paid close to $300 for the cake which included it being ready for Saturday so to be hung up on twice was unprofessional, distasteful, and absolutely absurd. I unfortunately, would never come back or recommend this bakery and I'm sure the owner could care less what I think since customer service was not on his agenda. If it wasnt for this being the day of a surprise party, I wouldn't have called back after being hung up the first time and I certainly wouldn't have accepted the cake. If you want to avoid a headache and unprofessionalism save yourself the trouble and try Bianca's Custom Cakes on Caplin St or Sweetland Cakery on Eldridge Pkwy. read more

My mother-in-law ordered a cake from here at my suggestion based on the reviews for my husband's surprise birthday. She ordered it way in advance of the minimum requirement to ensure that it would be ready in time considering she was driving from Dallas for the birthday. On the way into town she received a call saying that the cake wouldn't be ready yet until 1:30. She then checked back at 1:30 end it was still not ready! Nearly two hours later she finally got the cake with barely an apology and ended up arriving at the house at the same as my husband, thus the surprise was ruined. I was hesitant to write a negative review given covid, but this is based on customer service. Despite the lack in timely service the cake was impressive although we could tell the coloring was done hastily and thus didn't look exactly like the picture we provided. The flavor was actually really good and the cake was extremely moist although it was mostly fondant which may be typical of customized cakes.
