We had water damage and the insurance company sent them up for a repair estimate. Two contractors had already made independent bids within 5% of each other. They were 25% under the lowest bid of the other 2 contractors. Obviously the insurance went with their bid for the pay out. When asked for a potential start date through calls and emails there was no response from JM construction. They also refused to send me the bid, as they felt they only needed to send it to the insurance company. That being said, the representative they sent up was polite and professional. Another interesting note; the other two contractors took about 2 hours making notes while JM took 15 minutes. I think JM could do a good job, but for us they just made a flooding situation worse. read more

We had an electrical fire at our house on March 28, 2020, it took out the rafters and part of the roof as well as the kitchen and living room. The experience was devastating, but JM Construction helped to make a bad situation manageable. Because of Covid-19 the process to get a building permit from the City of San Jose had slowed to a crawl, we did not get our permit until the end of December 2020. In the meantime JM helped walk us through the architect plans and to get the house ready for rebuild by having the asbestos removed from our 1959 built house. JM had quoted a 7 month effort to rebuild our home in accordance with the architect plans. Once they began working on January 4, 2021 the 7 month quoted effort turned into a remarkable rebuild in less than 6 months. All the work was performed efficiently and professionally. We were able to move back into our home on June 23rd. JM consulted us on the progress as the work was being performed and was always available to answer our questions and respond to our suggestions. JM also worked well with our insurance company, Allstate. The payments for the work were seamless and it helped keep one area of stress at bay from us. We got great service from Jim Edens (owner of JM), Ron Hart the JM estimator and Mark Nelson the project manager. All three were available to answer our questions and provided helpful suggestions to us during this whole process. JM also stands behind their warranty as we had a few minor fixes that were needed after we moved in and JM responded quickly and all repairs were performed in excellent fashion. Hands down, JMConstruction is simply awesome. In April 2021, I had a major leak from my upstairs bathroom. Unbeknownst to me the bathtub had been leaking slowly for quite some time. It got my attention when water was cascading down through my ceiling lights and down the walls in my first floor. I had been thinking of remodeling my kitchen and bathrooms. I had interviewed several contractors. But, none seemed to be qualified. Anyway, I reported the leak to my home insurance company. They hired both a disaster clean up company and a separate construction company for repairs. I met with Ron Hart and Mark Nelson of JMConstruction and I was impressed by their detailed cost analysis and comprehensive work schedules. Given my insurance company's selection of JMConstruction for their professionalism and their extremely well-documented bidding process, I decided to go forward with JMConstruction for my remodeling plans. They began the repair and then the remodeling at 8 am on the scheduled start date and completed on their scheduled end date. Given, I was somewhat stressed that my brothers were coming to town for a visit and I hoped that the repair and remodeling schedules dates would be completed on time. JMConstruction was was a godsend. They finished on time and their wasn't any cost-overrun. I was extremely pleased with their repairs and remodeling. Mark suggested an alternate choice for my countertop. and I am very grateful that he did, since it is much more elegant than the one I had selected. We were referred to JM Construction through State Farm's Premier Service Program following water damage from sewage fill-up. (The demolition and dryout phase had already been completed.) We couldn't be more pleased with how it all turned out! Once project dates were settled, work began on time and ended two days earlier than anticipated. Now, looking at the walls, you can see no traces of where the existing portion remains and the new portion was added -- it is completely seamless. All of the other project tasks were similarly carried out attentively and look fantastic. This is an unusual use of YELP but it was the only way I thought to do this. We had some water damage from a leaking roof in early January 2018 and looked for a company to re-construct our living room. We looked at several companies to do the re-construction and JM Construction was one of them. Our criteria for a vendor was that they had to have good YELP reviews, did quality, high-end work and have been in business for a good long while. Due to the negotiations between us and our insurance company and a start date, we chose another vendor. This did in no way indicates that JM Construction was not a quality vendor. They were very prompt in getting us a proposal, the estimator was very professional and helpful but for various reasons we chose another vendor. This place is an absolute joke. No communication, if you have a lock box beware of people entering and exiting with no prior knowledge. I used them through my insurance to get my kitchen fixed. It took over 6 months. They had to redo my backsplash twice and it would have been three but I agreed to accept the work rather than pay the out of pocket fee they were charging me. The detail is just not there! The quality of work is not something you'd expect from an actual business more like something you'd expect from a company you were paying under the table. At a glance it looks good but it's my kitchen and I spend a lot of time in there so I know and see all the imperfections. I don't normally write reviews feeling that most existing reviews cover what I would say. I can't help myself with this exception. JM did a fantastic job! The house was mostly destroyed by fire. Ron showed up. Was sensitive to the loss of life and possessions and me being on the other side of the continent. Ron and JM casually and carefully explained the process and limits. They really know how to work with the insurance companies and how to estimate the damage and repair electronically down to every stud and bracket. I awarded them the competitive bid. We walked through the salvage and possibilities for restoring the structure to better than original. Costs were explained, contained, and smart substitutions made where it would enhance the outcome. There was very little overage beyond the agreed insurance payments and all overage was well spelled out before hand. We picked out everything together from trim to faucets and appliances. Their architect did a great job and listened to include improvement opportunities. As an engineer myself, I was pleased to participate highly in the process. They have a good sensibility for what is quality and what looks good and will fit within the insurance (or my) budget. Their communication was great. Shari and Cindy managed the project well on the back end. Dave managed the site expertly and even sent progress photos to limit my flights across country to inspect. Ron moved cars and met agents and did whatever it took. They all went WELL BEYOND what was needed to make this project a success. The end result: the completed house sold in 4 days for well over asking. Yes, these are real before and after photos of the same kitchen! Bottomline, 2 weeks without any work by JM. Their Project Manager was my primary concern. If he couldn't: Project Manage, that is. He couldn't: - Meet in a timely manner - Review document that I had sent to him prior to the meeting - I had to print for him, and clearly it was the first time he saw - read it. - Call to have room contents moved out before the work (Says it was my job to coordinate) - Call for an outside contractor to begin the Asbestos Abatement (Says it was my job, not his. Finally had the Abatement Co call after 1 week which got the project going) - "Forgot" - "Didn't realize" there was contents to be removed before abatement - More delay - Told Abatement Co to begin work when the room contents had not yet been fully removed! - Coordinated the content move-out only after telling him that it was not my job to coordinate - etc... but the PM at the contractor - Abatement company showed up and Proj Mgr let him in, only to find large items still in room where the move-out company had not yet completed their work. (Me thinks that he should have known or at least called to verify that the room was clear) - I had to call the packout people to finish work ASAP so Abatement could begin - When I mentioned to the PM that concern and there were still items in the room, he suggested that he was not aware of it (even tho he was there that morning!) and asked what was there. ======================================== JM Construction hadn't even started the repairs with their resources, and I could only guess that things would likely get worse than better. Also - was told by the estimator that the scope of work would likely only take 4 week, at the most 5. The PM later updated that estimate to 5-6, with a possibly of not exceeding 8. I love the project completion creep. The schedule, not the individual. The estimator was fantastic. I even visited the company to personally drop off my contract, and they seemed competent. In fact, there were letters plastered ALL over their walls from customers saying what great work they did. They probably did. And they are probably wonderful contractors. -------------- Insurance Adjuster had been following the series of events and offered similar concerns when we discussed the issues and concerns. High praise for JM Construction's repair work at our house! We suffered from a nasty dishwasher leak that ruined our floors and cabinets. Our insurance (AAA) introduced us to JM Construction. We interviewed them and did reference checks that gave us confidence they would be the right partner for our difficult project. Difficult project because we wanted them to not just return our kitchen to same condition as original (which the insurance company guarantees), but we wanted them to preserve and reuse our beautiful granite countertop and do some extra upgrades to our kitchen. Normally I would research and choose a contractor myself, however in this case I was overwhelmed by the extent of damage so I decided to go with company insurance recommended. Mark Nelson was in charge of this project and he was very good at responding to my questions quickly. I like that he would text me pictures of progress along the way so we could discuss without me having to be onsite constantly. It is important for homeowners/landlords to understand that repairs or rebuilding can take quite a bit of time, especially when waiting on city inspections, approval and permits. A recent fire in my home left much smoke damage throughout multiple rooms. The walls were disgusting, and the smell was unbearable. My insurance company referred me to JM Construction, and I'm sure glad they did! JM Construction told me what to expect and sent out an estimator to assess the damage. They gave me detailed descriptions of what needed to be done and realistic timelines for when it should be complete. They explained everything to me in an easy to understand way (I know NOTHING about home repair), and they then got to work immediately on my house. The results were fantastic. You couldn't even tell there was any smoke. They left the house in better condition than before the smoke damage! The best part by far was the fact they put me at ease throughout the entire ordeal. What was a traumatic and emotional experience ended up not being too bad. I had an outside pane of a double paned window crack. My insurance company recommended JM Construction. They used Lotus Glass as a subcontractor. Not only was Lotus Glass incompetent and unprofessional, JM Construction made no effort to come out and inspect the damage or verify that the "expert's" opinion was valid. I don't think JM Construction actually has any construction experience or they wouldn't have this subcontractor and they wouldn't have accepted their "expert" opinion. Here's the interaction I had that has caused me to write such an unfavorable review of JM Construction. The people from Lotus Glass showed up at my door unannounced one day when I was getting ready to leave. I do not open the door to strangers and they stood there ringing the doorbell over and over. Finally they called and were annoyed that I wouldn't answer the door. I told them I don't open the door to strangers, I was walking out the door right now, I was late and didn't have time to see them. She got very annoyed that I wouldn't take 5 minutes for them to take measurements. I repeated that I was late for an appointment and they needed to make an appointment if they wanted to come measure. The woman on the phone got huffy and I hung up on her. I sent an email to and called JM Construction to let them know what happened and that I thought it was unprofessional. They said that they would speak to Lotus and let them know they always had to call first. The fact that they had to tell them what is obvious to any professional company should have been my first clue. Eventually, Lotus Glass called to set up an appointment to measure the glass. They showed up late and measured, told me that they could replace just the cracked pane. When I pointed out that it was an insulated window and I didn't think they could replace only one pane they said don't worry about it, it would be fine. After they left I got a call from Lotus Glass trying to set up an appointment to come out and measure the glass. They were completely unaware that someone had already come out. I sent an email to JM Construction letting them know that Lotus did not seem to know what they were doing and could they figure this out. I eventually got an email much later from Lotus to set up a date to replace the pane two weeks from then. I got a call three days later on a Friday from a man saying he had confused me with another client and could we do it on Monday at 9. They never showed up or called on Monday. About 11 I got a call from a woman at Lotus saying could they come by sometime in the afternoon. She knew nothing about the appointment at 9 and said there was no man who worked there and it couldn't have been Lotus that set up the appointment. She just dismissed what I said and asked again if they could come out "sometime in the afternoon". I told her that I didn't appreciate they way I was being treated and that I did not want to deal with them again. When I called JM Construction to find out why these people were so incompetent everyone was busy and I left a message saying I was really angry and would someone call me back immediately. While I was waiting I called the construction company that installed all of the windows in our home. He told me that any reputable construction company should have known that you can't replace only one pane of an insulated window. I called a couple of other window replacement companies and was told exactly the same thing. Each one stressed that I should not deal with any glass place that would tell me that and with any construction company that would accept that from their "expert". JM Construction finally called back and said they had scheduled the 9 o'clock appointment with Lotus (who called me to confirm on Friday) and apparently the glass truck was late today (Monday). They didn't know why the woman at Lotus knew nothing about the appointment and didn't seem in the least concerned about it. I pointed out that the glass truck had a phone and never called, the woman at Lotus didn't know anything about the appointment, and that I had a job and was losing money while I dealt with these morons. I had waited all morning for these people and they wanted me to wait till "sometime in the afternoon" for the glass truck to show up. JM Construction never had anyone from their company come out. They seemed to only be involved as a scheduler. When I told them that I had called other contractors and all of them had said that any reputable construction company should know that you can't replace only one pane of an insulated window he said he didn't know anything and they rely on their experts. Lotus Glass is incompetent and unprofessional and honestly, they remind me of the Three Stooges. I think JM Construction has no real contractor expertise and is only a scheduling company. They should be able to verify their "experts" opinions. Definitely would NOT recommend you use this company or any of their subcontractors. read more

So, here it finally is - my review of the company that I DID work with: Please note that I did not hire JM Construction, but this review is based on my interaction with estimator, Scott. I had a water damage claim, and I needed a licensed contractor's cost estimate for rebuild/restore work. I got an appointment from the office with Scott, as he was recommended by another construction company (who did not do residential work), and Scott showed up on time, was courteous and helpful. He was knowledgeable and pointed out things like the flooring ("curled") in the kitchen where the cabinet had been removed. He put together a cost estimate for my insurance company that I was able to forward to the insurance adjuster. Although I could not go with JM due to their construction schedule (they could not start before 11/1/20), I appreciate how Scott/JM helped me and how sympathetic and empathetic he was. read more

I have talked to my insurance and mitigation company about the issues I had and how unreliable they and I was told more likely they also had the the plan to take them out of their list because of other issues they were reported in the past. my bad luck I ended up working with them, BE AWARE, Don't get in daily frustration with them, look for others if you don't want to have nightmare every night. October 17 2011 my son called to tell me the house was on fire, I though it was a joke. Arrived to find my house smoking like a cheap cigar. My insurance had sent JM Construction to meet me there. I had call Allstate and I drove from Newark to San Jose, and surprising to me they were there before the fire was totally out. Once the Fire Department gave the okay to enter, JM and the Restoration company onsite ( Crown Restoration) on site to do clean up. JM also secured the property boarded up windows and doors. This all took place before the sun set, that day. I was amazed. Having worked with contractors before, I know the lies they tell just to get the job. I have that Ron the lead person for JM was very straight forward. He stated that this project would take 9 month or more based on several factors. City planning , inspections, permits, architectural review and drawing. Hats off the planes that were to take 6 weeks were completed in two, and walked through the city process in 1 week. Long story, we are moving back into the house on April 9th (today) 3 months ahead of the minimal projected date. JM and the people that worked with them have done as outstanding job. They were professional and always greeted us with a smile and address ALL the questions that were presented to them. NO hidden agendas, no double talk or trying to talk over your head. The house looks better than before .. 100 percent damaged on the inside 100 percent better. I highly recommend JM Construction for any construction projects you may have.
