We stumbled upon this place by chance after seeing someone eating take out from here at another bar and are so glad that we did! All the staff was incredibly friendly, and the owner himself was there to greet us and hold the door open for us. We had a house specialty cocktail and I am still thinking about it nearly 2 weeks later. I was impressed that they also had alternate dietary options. We tried good assortment of the food and everything was really good. The place itself has an old-time feel to it, which is exactly what I was hoping for when I went to visit Blackhawk. Drinks, atmosphere and staff were nice. Place was a bit dirty. We ordered beer and nachos after a hike. Took 45 minutes for an order of nachos and the place was 95% empty. Beer was great. Wow!!! I gave them another chance and they seem to have gotten worse. It's pretty sad when a place can ruin nachos, but JKQ has accomplished that and more. I was with a large group and they brought out our food over about 30 minutes. The nachos were made with chips that had obviously been left open most of the day. The cheese had the consistency of congealed fat, and the 9 brisket pieces, that were about the size and taste of kibble, were rock hard. The restaurant itself is generally uncomfortable and poorly furnished, so the ambiance is like that of an old bar that should've been shut down long ago. One of my friends had pastrami that was so slimy the bread had soaked it up like a sponge. All this at about $30 per person. Make the drive to Idaho Springs and go to McDonalds. We were exhausted from walking the strip of casinos on the 1st day of our weekend getaway. This was the perfect place to take care of our hunger. The location itself is charming & comfortable in a historic building in the downtown which is a nice change from the modern casino restaurants. The staff were super welcoming & quick with service. As for the food, you will smell the savory bbq before you even reach the restaurant like a siren song. I got the cheesesteak & my husband got the pulled pork sandwich both with sides of mac & cheese. The meats are tender & flavorful. The mac & cheese is the way I like it: thick cheese, not watery, & penne type pasta. The desserts also looked too good to pass up so we had the yummy lemon cake. Also don't pass on the house cocktail because that was addicting! Everytime we come to Black Hawk from now on this is our first stop! read more

They had a special on fish and chips... the fish was obviously pre breaded and frozen like from a cardboard box and the fries weren't fresh. You know when you bite into that fry and it's spongy instead of crisp? I understand fish comes frozen but if your service is to cook and serve food and all you did was reheat stuff smh. Thaw the fish, bread the fish, and then fry it up fresh. No one is expecting fresh caught fish in the mountains but take 1/2 an ounce of pride in what you're doing. Seriously disappointed! read more

I really enjoyed the bbq lamb sandwich. I've tried several items on the menu and they are all delicious. The service is hit or miss. We've had some great servers and some that get annoyed when you ask for things and then remind them when they've forgotten to bring you your request. The location is great. First of all, what a location!! Refreshing to just walk into a restaurant in Blackhawk and get straight to the good stuff - the food! And the interior is as historic and pretty as the outside! The food was delicious, so much meat on my brisket sandwich! And the beef? Ahhhhhh, perfectly cooked! I didn't love the sauces, tbh, I'd have liked more heat in the hot one, but they did the job. Doing an even better job is the staff, I was heartily welcomed and after sitting at the bar solo had just the right amount of interaction with the server tending to me. She was pleasant and thoughtful, checking in, made conversation here and there, and then letting me be to work a bit. Food was delivered quickly and with a smile, and my water glass stayed full even as I was especially thirsty that day. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Blackhawk! read more

We happened into JKQ by chance- just walking by. The staff are super friendly & the atmosphere is totally cool! The history in this building is palpable. My kids sat at a marble top table & were thrilled to be "in" history. The food is amazing! My picky kids loved all their choices: Chicken Caesar salad, fries (of course! ), beans - OMG the beans! You'd think it was Jack & the Beanstalk magic means! Amazing, multi-layered flavor! If we weren't so stuffed from the ribs & pulled pork, we'd definitely ordered more beans! I went to this restaurant a couple of months ago and didn't not have a very good experience, the waitresses are two older women who are not very proficient an on top of that not friendly! They acted like they were doing us a favor by waiting on us the people who are giving them business but I wanted to give this place another chance because I thought that maybe the first time I went there the waitresses were having a bad day so I went back, I waited to be seated for a good 10 minutes and the waitresses just looked at us and didn't even say anything, then on of them came to get us, and again food took a long time and orders were wrong and when I let the waitress know, she gave us an attitude. These people must really hate their jobs or they are from the east coast where they don't care about customer service and people are used to rude wait staff. I'm Never going back to this place, food was not good, we had stomach aches after we ate there and we are Not supporting this kind of behavior from the wait staff. read more

Stopped for dinner while camping at cold storing in Arapaho National forest. Pulled pork was excellent. Sides were a 7/10. We had cold slaw, Baked beans and Mac and cheese. They were ok but all lacked flavor in our opinion. We do a lot of BBQ at our home smoker and I make the same sides do maybe we are spoiled. Great Tavern restaurant. We went there in the afternoon. The pulled pork was great and the FRIED CHEESE CURDS....best ever. They also had a nice play on Moscow Mules. There were six of us and they put us at a nice table. Doors were opened, a few flies, but that's ok. Service was very good and attentive. My husband and I decided to take a break from the back breaking work of landscaping our yard for a day, and decided to explore some of the history of Central City, CO. Round about lunch time we wandered by JKQ BBQ in the historic Teller House, well the whole town is historic so I guess that bit goes without saying. The building is very cool though, and the food was even better. We both had a pulled chicken bbq sandwich, which was served on a warm, soft, fresh and incredibly tasty bun, and your choice of one side. I opted for French fries which were really great, crispy and hot, and tasted like potatoes, and my husband had the baked beans as a side, which were so good I lamented ordering the fries - They're made from scratch there with three different beans and a very tasty sauce. We had a nice friendly and interesting conversation with the owner, and at his recommendation explored a little bit of the back roads on the way to checking out a near by ghost town. Overall, we'll probably be hard pressed to eat anywhere else next time we're exploring in the area. read more

Baked beans were 3 different types. My family raved about it. Then the BBQ, so choice. We split the Colorado Philly, Brisket sandwich and chicken sandwich and all were delicious. They had some nice hot pepper sauce options to kick it up a notch if wanted. If this is authentic Colorado BBQ, I'm sold!
