    The Stampede

A month ago, we ate lunch at Westbound & Down and enjoyed both the food and brews. Passing through Idaho Springs again on our way to Keystone with time to spare and decided to give The Buffalo next door a try, not realizing they use the same menu. I ordered the Ceasar Salad ($15, no additions) which was very good with just a light coating of dressing... tasty, but a bit overpriced (salads almost always are). Hubby got the Ahi Tuna sandwich with a side of green chili, the tuna was delicious but a bit overwhelmed by the bun & fixings. It was better once deconstructed into the separate tastes. The big highlight of The Buffalo compared to W&D is the gorgeous old interior, including the awesome wood bar, Stampede mural and buffalo head staring down at you... would definitely recommend stopping in.

The burgers here are excellent and the recommended beers really complement them well. The fries had the right amount of crisp and flavor.

It was my first time in BH and we weren't familiar with JKQ beforehand. We had such a great experience! The restaurant appears to have been built recently but was made to look like an authentic old-timey Western saloon. The service was great! Our waitress, Denise, was efficient, friendly and fun, as were the other staff (met and chatted with Larry and Jennie too, the chef and other server/bartender). By the end of our dinner, the birthday boy was taking pickle shots with the crew. They were all great and so accommodating of our large party. And let me tell you, the bbq was top notch too and everything was very fairly priced. You have to try the Pitmaster cocktail, which for $8 was a steal compared to drink prices in Denver. I had the sampler platter - for $19 you get 2 proteins, 2 sides and Texas toast. Everything was super tasty! Several people had sandwiches and they looked great too. They also surprised us with a small chocolate birthday cake and some free shot/pint glasses, which was really nice and unexpected. Overall, highly recommend checking out JKQ if you're in the Black Hawk area.

The lady taking care of us didn't really care to be there. Stomped her feet when she had to do something, made inappropriate comments next to us, and drinking on the job with the cook. Westbound & Down is a great place to check out and service matches the great beers they offer as well. Greeted with a warm welcome and a smile, we were quickly whisked away to our seats and greeted by a wonderful waitress with colorful tattoos on one arm and black/white tattoos on the other. She ran through the list of food and beverage like she had written the menus. The ambiance matched their personalities and easily had the mountain vibes! We ended up getting something fairly small since we had big plans for dinner in town. The bison burger was such a great bite after bite and the fries did not disappoint. We would certainly return and check it out again and again!

Unfortunately the service and food were average at best. Our waiter seemed rushed and barely made eye contact or stopped at our table. The burger and chicken sandwich were fine. The fries were the best part. The chicken sandwich had way too much coleslaw so the bun disintegrated pretty quickly. We enjoyed the food enough but at the price, we expected more both from the food and the service.

For our Italian portion we had the garlic cheese bread to start and tiramisu to finish. Both were amazing. We frequent an Italian restaurant in California where the chef is from Italy as well as most of the servers. We've BEEN to Italy. This was the best tiramisu we've ever had. Service: A 10. From the adorable gal that greeted us to our server and the manager that runs the place with so much pride we thought he was the owner! Ambiance: For us it was another 10. Warm, cozy, welcoming. I felt that it was probably one of the, if not the finest restaurant in Idaho Springs. I loved that it was open early, with a good brunch menu. My husband had Short Ribs Benedict, and I had Chicken & Waffles...and both were really good. I will say, however, that mine would have been better if they were less soggy. For that, I have to deduct a star. Who knew that a small, quaint town like Idaho Springs would have decent restaurants like this?

We were sat without delay, the inside is cute and gives a mountainy cabin vibe. They are a brewery and also a distiller, I tried their Housemade vodka, seltzer, it was light and easy to drink. They had a multitude of flavors to choose from as well. I wasn't super hungry so I went with the tomato artichoke soup and an order of sweet potato fries. This was one of the best soups I've ever had, so creamy and cheesy with real artichoke pieces in each bite, seasoned so well and served with little pieces of naan bread The sweet potato fries were also incredible, just so fresh and cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside and just seasoned to perfection. The rest of the table tried the burgers and had great things to say about them. The server was also really nice and helpful, i can't remember her name but she made some great recommendations and was very attentive. Prices are reasonable and for bar food this was really a great experience. Definitely will be back!
