What kept me from giving it five stars: This place is small. If you come with more than a few people good luck finding anywhere to sit. The soup was lukewarm. It was 22 degree and snowing on the side of a mountain, we need HOT soup! My advice to get to five stars: bump up the heat on those soups and serve some cornbread with the soup. This is the only restaurant I've ever encountered with soup almost as good as my mother's creations. There are three different soups of the day. I've found that at least one of these will be g/f and/or vegetarian. Every soup I've tasted has been so satisfying. They also offer sandwiches and THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE BREAD! One morning we stopped in for breakfast. They made me DELICIOUS g/f French toast rolled in crunchy oats. I was full halfway through, but it was so tastyI couldn't stop eating until my plate wad clean. The vibe of this place is laid-back and very welcoming. The high ceiling and general decor is casual and comfy. There is also outdoor seating available. I can't leave this place a review without commenting on how cool and friendly everyone who works there has been. I built this place up in my mind - probably too much so. Who doesn't lust after an amazing bread bowl of hearty soup for lunch after a solid morning on the slopes? So needless to say, I was salivating before I'd even taken my board off. I'm not sure why I was surprised at it being pretty crowded, but I was. My soup fantasy involved quietly sipping on a hearty chowder by a roaring fire. That did not happen. There were no seats left inside, so we sat outside (it was chilly, but not unbearable). Our soup took a while to arrive - I guess dipping a ladle into a pot is more delicate an art than I thought. It also proved to be very beneficial that we were hungry since the soup cools off pretty quickly when it's below 30F outside - of no fault of the restaurant. The soup we had was decent but nothing to write home about. And riddle me this - who serves soup out of a bread bowl that isn't sourdough?! Granted I'm not even a huge sourdough fan, but the shear physics of the concept of using plain white bread loaves left me puzzled. The bottom of the bowl became a gooey, mushy mess and if you order a thinner soup, you're bound to spring a leak before you even hit the bottom of the bowl unless you really chow down. So less talking and dreaming of a roaring fire... get to town draining that bowl before you end up with a mess on your hands. read more

We stopped in for a later post ski lunch and had a fantastic meal. Of course you'd expect the soups to be good and they were excellent. We tried the veggie lentil, black eyed pea and ham and Thai veggie. All were exceptional. But not to be left behind the sandwiches were exceptional as well. We ordered the Chicken Green Chili and Chicken and rice, will definitely recommend. They were both fantastic, if they have it get the Chicken Green Chili. It's not what you would expect from a "Chili," it's mostly vegetables but beware it is spicy; has the perfect kick. Will definitely be back. The only negative is the same thing we are to expect from winter park, it's pricy for what you get. We spend $15 for two cups of soup and a fountain drink. read more

Another great lunch experience. My eyes were way bigger than my stomach today. I had the "Scott" sandwich (named after the Scott athletic wear brand) and a clam chowda (yes, chowda). The soup was not your classic creamy chowder, it had a very light cream with more of a chicken stock. The tomato soup had very good texture and quite delicious also. This place is located in Winter Park Resort. It's the perfect place for a casual breakfast or lunch. It's small but worth the wait. It's like eating at your aunts kitchen. The staff is extremely warm and friendly. The price I totally reasonably and the mimosas were perfectly priced. I order d a freshly made quiché with a side of fresh fruits. They're a bit slow and the kitchen is tiny, but once again, it was worth the wait. The sandwiches also looked absolutely delicious. The price it's extremely reasonable. I will definitely go back to try their soups. read more

Okay, so I should have taken note when after skiing on a Friday at 3:30pm this place was empty when ALL other restaurants in the Village had a wait. Staff needs much more training....they need a system at the very least because this is how it went... We walk in and think it's closed because no one is inside. We are directed to soup choices on a board. We choose 2 kids meals and 2 bowls of soup for adults. Kids meals are posted to come with milk or soda. Order milk but are told they are out so we go for soda. No total..we are told we pay later. So we sit, 5 mins later someone yells out the kitchen asking who ordered the hot dog and what do you want on it? So we yell back the answer from our seats. Another few minutes and lady comes out to say they only have enough for one bowl of a soup so who wants it? I pass on my soup so my daughter can have hers and am told that she will just bring two spoons instead...? No thanks. I'll pass. But what about the sodas, it's been 10 minutes ? ... Oh, you go get them yourself. Oh, Ok..."no ice in the soda machine" I repeat as if there is anyone else I am speaking to.. Oh and no straws. Ok.. So where is the total? You come back up and wait until they are no longer busy behind the counter to ring you up. Very chaotic. And while seated a group of 3 come in, look around for a bit and are never greeted. They finally just leave. The owner needs to do something fast. The soup may be good but this place needs someone that can run a service counter like a machine. Seriously good soup! I had green chili for lunch and the Italian sausage for dinner. I wish I had a bowl of the Italian sausage for a bedtime snack right now. I will go again. Other members in my party had a quesadilla and hamburger that were exceptionally prepared and very flavorful too. The interior was quaint and charming, but the patio was amazing. If you have ventured into Winter Park to eat at the highly rated Pepe Osaka's Fishtacos you may have noticed one big similarity with The Back Bowl --- they share a chef! After a long morning of skiing (errr... mostly falling), my family and I walked quite the distance in ski boots to the little soup shop. Because it's the farthest eatery, I think it keeps the big crowds away. They have more than just your run of the mill chicken soup or tomato; the varieties range from pork pozole to green chile to tomato KALE. My husband loved that the green chile tasted just like the one his dad makes at home. I also had the Never Summer sandwich, which was also very tasty. My only negatives are the distance from the ski lifts (eh, not a big deal really) and the prices, but I hear that all the eateries are just as expensive. I realize that they are all paying for prime real estate though. I really enjoyed it overall, enough to go twice in one weekend. read more

If it's cold skiing in Winter Park skiing this is the place to go to warm your body up. I enjoyed the tomato basil soup warm and yummy. The Never Summer turkey sandwich with avocado is the perfect half to order when you get the soup and sandwich combo. Yes this place is the bomb as the line can be a long wait but it's worth it. They even have a soup recipe in the cookbook- Ski Town Soups. Tip- There isn't much eating space but you can grab your lunch to go and sit by one of the gas firepits in the Village. A little warm soup and a fire is just what you need to get back out and conquer those black diamond runs. read more

Terrible. My sister and I went here for after ski lunch and were wildly disappointed. I understand that food on the mountain is often more than a little pricey but this was absurd. $11 dollars for half a grilled cheese and a tiny bowl of soup? Rip off. I wouldn't be so negative if the food was good. The soup was watery and bland and the grilled cheese wasn't even cooked all the way. They also have signs all over the place bragging about how good it is. Bold faced lies. There was one up side though.... The employees were so sweet. Love the back bowl! I grab lunch here whenever I have the time. (They are far from the ski lifts... Sometimes on a powder day I just don't have the time.) Every meal has been spot on. Always a great selection of meals. Soup is hot and perfect. Sandwiches are creative and well executed. Also love to grab a cheap beer here with lunch. Usually best on the way out of the ski hill. Expensive? Hardly. The meal I ate at The Back Bowl would easily be $20 in NYC, but I guess I'm used to paying hiked-up prices. We tried out the Giant burger (with a side of pasta salad) and half of a K2 with baked potato soup. The food was great, especially the burger. My mom enjoyed meeting Woody, the owner, on the chair lift - which prompted us to try out the place. Friendly environment, good food, big portions. Can't complain! Went for breakfast and was super impressed with this place especially since it's in the resort. I find some of the restaurants are not that great because they are trying to quickly make food for the thousands of people in there. Anyways!! I had the veggie breakfast bowl, my husband had a ham, cheese/egg sandwich and my little had a fruit bowl. I mention the fruit bowl because it literary had all his favorite fruit, strawberries, bananas, blueberries and mandarin oranges totally worth very penny as he ate very bite( as you know most 3 year olds will not eat everything on there plate). My breakfast bowl had veggies, eggs, potatoes, beans, and it was covered in green chili. Seriously one of the best breakfast bowls I have ever had. My husbands sandwich was super tasty as well. I can not wait to go back for happy hour they have my favorite DENVER brewery on tap Dry Dock and they have Apricot Blonde and Sour Apricot Blonde. I love both!! Ate at The Back Bowl recently and was impressed with my tasty meal. Had the traditional burger, potato salad and a cup of the chicken green chili. Burger was delicious with cheese, greens, red onion and pickle. The bun was perfectly toasted. The potato salad was awesome!!! Not too wet with the perfect amount of dill. The soup was pretty good. A little light on the chicken but had a wonderful flavor. Cute little place to eat and would return. A little pricey IMO for what is served. My only real complaint was the girl who took my order and served my food, she was super unfriendly. Like doing her job was the last thing she wanted to do. I would return to eat with my husband but wouldn't take my 4 kids. Place is pricey for what's being served. I'd spend a small fortune to feed everyone. read more

We went here for lunch on our first trip to winter park, co. I had the specialized burger which was really good. We also had the baked potato soup that was good also. Kids had a burger and pb&j sandwich. Overall the food was good. The sitting area is small and it is usually full so a large group would have more trouble finding seating as we did (8 people in our party). It was cold so sitting outside was not a option! I walked by this place after snowboarding and was very curious as to what kind of soups I could find. The next day my friend and I came to try it out. We stopped in about 2:15pm on a Monday and three soups had already been crossed off the board to our dismay. Alas 4 soups remained: Green Chicken Chili, Tomato Basil, Philly Cheesesteak and Red Chili. My friend and I opted for a half sandwich and cup of Philly Cheesesteak soup. I can agree with others when they say the service isn't all that great. The guy taking our ordered seemed burdened by us. After waiting about 10min for our food to come out I was disappointed that the grilled cheese sandwich looked like something from a school cafeteria, but it tasted good so I can't complain too much. Now on to the REAL reason we came... the soup! I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the Philly Cheesesteak soup. It was on the thin side but had chunks of beef, bell peppers, and onions which tasted delicious!
