The setting is an awe inspiring area of Colorado. The ranch's facilities are well done and reminiscent of some "old west" charm. Staff is polite, friendly, and attentive. The food, however, is average and overpriced. So dining doesn't add much to the experience and is not a reason to visit on its own. The coffee shop on the other hand is convenient (should be open all day) with a nice variety of options; but again, keenly overpriced. ...Overpriced does not mean the dollars and cents that are charged. I've been going to Heck's and Devil's Thumb Ranch for many years and recommended it to dozens over the years, but sadly, today will be my last visit. The service and attitude of the staff, and in particular the manager was pretentious, rude and very exclusionary. The meal and dinner service also missed the mark. They implemented a new policy that apparently only allows overnight guests to use the restaurant. We had made reservations by phone weeks ago and drove two hours to visit, and they never mentioned anything until we ran into the pretentious manager at the hostess desk. He couldn't have made me and my guest feel more unwelcome. Super embarrassing after I had been talking the resort and restaurant up for days. The restaurant was also pretty much empty, so you'd think they'd welcome the business as I've spent thousands upon thousands at that resort and hosted business events there in the past. Sad to see such a beautiful place get run into the ground with poor management and service. And don't dare ask to sit outside on the beautiful patio.... SERVICE IS SSSSLLLLOOOOOWW This is our 2nd stay at DTR and have dined at Heck's before (pre COVID) and found it to be overpriced but acceptable service and food. Tonight's dinner was a a total shitshow show from start to finish. The wait staff is untrained, has no manners, the food was total rubbish and it cost us just over $200 with a reduced tip. Waiting to check in w host...stood for nearly 10 minutes while she dealt w phone calls and a rude fellow staffer that just kept interrupting her. We had reservations so once she was free we had a table. We waited easily 10 minutes at the table and flagged down folks a couple of times in an attempt to get service. Finally, a waiter was sent over and he took our drink and food orders. I had to run back to our room for a few minutes in another building and to my surprise we still had another long wait to get drinks. My wife actually went up to the bar herself to get our 2 kids juice orders. Didn't pick up the massive, clunky menus after we ordered...I had to bring them up to the hostess. The staff person bringing out the food orders was a bit rude. All the server look like they hate working here, no one smiles. The food...terrible on all counts. My wife ordered the chicken and it was bland as could be. My kids and I got the wagyu burgers which were totally tasteless (5 Guys has them beat by a large margin to put it in perspective). Two others at the table had the wagyu chili which they were also underwhelmed with. We had to request that the staff bus the table because they just didn't seem to know what they were doing. Some ordered dessert and it was equally unimpressive. The bill for 4 adults and 2 kids came to $183 for this awful f'ing experience. Unfortunately, we are here at DTR for another 4 nights. The restaurant itself it really nice and the view outside is amazing. The food and service are just average though. The Wagyu burger sounds amazing, my mouth was watering and I couldn't wait to try this $21 burger. Well, it was just an average slightly overcooked burger with no thrills or great taste. There was nothing wrong with the burger, but there wasn't anything above average about it either to warrant that price tag. The waitstaff here wasn't the best either, very slow and somewhat rude (maybe because we brought kids to lunch?) I'd highly recommend checking out Devils Thumb Ranch as it's beautiful but as for Heck's Tavern you can probably find better options for food. read more

This review is based on our visit in early March 2020 (spring skiing) before the pandemic hit and before the resort shut down. We had simple lunches and a dinner here during our stay. Beautiful rustic interior design with tall ceiling. Great atmosphere of a country inn. Love the central fireplace. Gorgeous view out of the patio and huge windows. Menu is short and simple, though every dish no matter how simple or small was expensive. Quite overpriced given the bar food vibe. But: it's a resort, and they have monopoly. We did love the wagyu beef and the chili. See pictures. Service left something to be desired. They couldn't find our reservation. Another time, they seated us but ignored us for a long time. We had an awesome dinner here this past weekend. Service was top notch and the setting was just stunning. The drinks were great, including the new one with green chili vodka - spicy and delicious! First and foremost - a GORGEOUS venue in a stunning place! But sadly the service at heck's was largely non existent. We tried to enjoy some drinks around the fire and after 45 minutes without being approached we asked if there were servers. We were informed that the had servers for table seating only - about 60% of the seating. I was a bit dumbfounded, but made my way to the bar. There was another couple at the bar - and nobody else. I waited patiently for service. A full 10 minutes later the bartender acknowledged that I was there. [update] next night. Arrived at 9:00pm and joined another party at their table. I'm not usually one to give negative reviews, but this place is an AVOID recommendation. The food is fine. Nothing to write home about but okay. This morning caused me to write this review. We sat down, ordered, and 45 minutes later the waiter brought our check and asked if we'd like anything else. Well, food would be nice was our answer. He seemed surprised that he hadn't brought us our meal. He disappeared and a few minutes later returned with our order. My husbands steak with the eggs told the story. It had very clearly been sitting under a warmer for quite some time. It looked like a steak that had been sliced for presentation and left to sit and dry out under a warmer for 30 minutes. My omelette was like cardboard. My husbands order came without the green chili advertised on the menu, my daughters chocolate chip pancakes were delicious apparently but lacking the chocolate chips. My son did order a bagel and cream cheese that came out correctly. After we ate the waiter brought us someone else's check, not kidding! 90 minutes later we left our $90 breakfast experien Our orders don't come correctly, both dinner last night And breakfast this morning. Most of the staff seems like they're in slow motion. Maybe stoned. Hard to say. All very nice but a line of people waiting for reservations, uncleaned tables, plenty of staff but they kind of wander around. My guess is poorly trained and poorly managed. This is our first trip to the Devil's Thumb Lodge in WP. Based on our experience with this restaurant it's not likely to be a place we revisit. read more

Good food and people amongst a gorgeous setting! The cocktails are stiff and refreshing. The staff are from all over the country. The food is delicious. We ordered the Brussels, a burger and the star of the show the Chicken with polenta. The chicken with polenta was soooo damn good we came back the next day for lunch, and even considered having it the following day. The Brussels were the next fav. They were crispy with the perfect amount of sweet and tangy! The burger was just ok. I was looking forward to this due to it being Wagyu raised on the DTR property. If it's not too hot out, I highly recommend sitting outside and enjoying the incredible setting where you have expansive views of the property. read more

We went to Hecks last week mid-week​ right before closing with friends. I haven't been there since the summer. The service was great especially since they were getting ready to close. I ordered a wedge salad and a cup of Tomato soup. I would give three stars for my meal. I drooled over Gary's meatloaf. It is always good to go with the waiter recommends​ . I only got one bite but I am looking forward to going back on a snowy day for comfort food. Don't get rid of the meatloaf anytime soon. Yum! Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO for a site visit where our company plans to host its annual manager retreat. Concluding our tour of the property and rooms, our host treated us to lunch at Heck's Tavern. The architectural design was inspired by the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood in Oregon. The floor-to-ceiling fireplace in the middle of the room is quite spectacular. The hexagonal shape of the restaurant makes for many panoramic views while dining. The menu features several ranch to table options including their own Wagyu beef. I tried the BBQ Wagyu Ranch Burger which was topped with onion rings, BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese. The burger was awesome; juicy and flavorful! In lieu of fries, I ordered the salad as my side dish. It came with a creamy lemon parmesan dressing that was very pleasing. $22 might be hard to swallow, but since my meal was comped and it was so tasty -- swallowing was not an issue. But honestly, for hyperlocally raised Wagyu beef amdist absolutely stunning views, I would highly recommend it! Note: one doesn't necessarily need to stay at the lodge to visit this restaurant. They are also open for breakfast and dinner. If you are in the Winter Park area, stop on by. read more

Food is inconsistently good and be careful when you go because they often are closed to anyone that isn't staying in the resort.

Even worse than the reviews! The resort is beautiful, the cross country trails are top notch. But the service of the hotel is one disaster after another. A few words of warning: 1) There is no room service at Devil's Thumb, which is crazy when rooms go for $400-700 a night. This means during a snowstorm, while my husband was sick, I had to go out from our lodge to the restaurant area to get food. 2) None of the menus are correct. The menu in your room is wrong and so is the one online. Good luck figuring out what you can order 3) you'll wait an insanely long time for someone to answer the phone at the restaurant. They will then put you on hold three times to verify what they have on their menu, because even they don't know! 4) I ordered a $9 "homemade" chicken noodle soup, a large. I got the tiniest, paltriest soup I've ever seen. 5) I ordered a chicken pot pie. It looked like bird poop and tasted like it. There were no carrots, peas, onions, or any of the things you'd expect. There was one tiny tiny piece of chicken. It was basically puff pastry with bird poop Why did we do this? Because there are no food options on site. Come for the day, but don't bother staying for the night. You'll starve and be snowed in read more

Had such a great meal here. I was not too sure what to order but the staff were very friendly and very knowledgeable of their foods. I got a pot pie with an amazing side salad. This is our second year in a row to come to Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort. Last year we ate every single one of our meals at Heck's. The service was excellent, the food was inventive & delicious, and always beautifully presented. Unfortunately, this year management has changed the food service to only serve breakfast and lunch in order to get their guests to The Ranch House (the property's more expensive steakhouse). Heck's is now only a brunch location with bar food in the afternoons. None of the delightful dishes from last year are anywhere on the menu. The most disappointing part about the entire experience is the lack of service. The staff is overworked and the restaurant is understaffed, so service takes entirely too long. When we arrived at the restaurant, five servers walked by and not one greeted us. Once we were seated, we waited for almost 45 minutes for someone to take our order. We will definitely not be back to Heck's and are seriously considering not coming back to Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort next year. read more

The view is magnificent! However Heck's recently changed their menu to small plates after 4:00 pm. I suppose this is to direct diners to the more expensive restaurant for dinner on site. The food was good but it was limited (really limited) Tapas menu and not enough protein options. I wish that the management would go back to the old menu and add a dinner menu so guests both staying and visiting will have more options. "Unbelievable" is how I would describe our brunch at Heck's. It was a gorgeous day and the scenery was incredible! The view on our plates, however, was almost disgusting... Three of us ordered Eggs Benedict... each came with CURDLED hollandaise sauce! (...the very essence of Eggs Benedict!) I ordered mine with avocado -- big mistake! (unless you like it mottled with lots of brown spots!) One plate had over-cooked egg -- not the pleasantly unctuous yolk that Egg Benedict usually espouses. The fourth person in our group ordered french toast with Colorado Palisades peaches... (this late summer fruit is a gift from the gods.) However... the heavens (or kitchen!) must have been angry that day -- as the peaches were BROWN and over-cooked. Getting coffee refills was something we only managed to get one time. The shortage of waitstaff was apparent. This beautiful dining space (inside has STUNNING museum-quality art by Karen Vance!) became the butt of our dining jokes for the rest of our visit to the beautiful area of the Winter Park valley. read more

We were able to experience Heck's for two breakfasts and take-out one night for dinner during our stay at DTR - it was all wonderful! The staff was very friendly each time we dined - the bartender offering suggestions as to what to do on and off the ranch during our time in town. Breakfast / brunch was amazing. Day 1 we ordered the Brussels and Kale Hash, Steak & Eggs, Huevos Rancheros, and Salmon Bagel Board. Everyone was pleased! So pleased in fact, that day 2 we went and ordered the Hash and Steak & Eggs again. The steak was cooked to perfection - tender, seasoned well, and honestly was the best steak I've had in a long time. It comes with two eggs, a biscuit and cheesy grits. We had called to have room service delivered and unfortunately were informed they only did take out - no more in-room delivery (the menu in the room was well outdated apparently, as a few items we hoped to order were also no longer an option). We had the meat and cheese boards (both were fantastic), a chicken dinner, a turkey sandwich, and the seasonal bread pudding for dessert. If ordering take-out, I suggest not doing the bread pudding - or at least ordering the ice cream on the side rather than placed in the container. It was still delicious, but the ice cream was totally melted before we even got back to the room. All this great food and the view is breathtaking. The ambiance and view make this an experience. Wednesday's you get a deal on the Wagyu Burger and any beer you want for $23. Heck of a deal since many of the beers are over $8 and the burger is $20! Great variety in beers. Heck's is inside a hotel and the hotel is beautiful and looks like a giant log cabin. We started with the fried zucchini. I figured for less than $10 at an expensive place we wouldn't get much. There must have been three zucchini's worth on the plate w a light and crispy breading. The zucchini was the star, but the fried food need was met. Their homemade ranch needs to be bottled. We asked for extra since there were so many friend zucchini's. We had the burgers and the prime rib sandwich. All were wonderful. The au jus was so flavorful! I could drink it! My 4 year old nephew got the spaghetti and meatballs. He a pretty picky eater, so we were surprised at how much he ate! Kids get a free scoop of ice cream too, which made his night. If you have time before or after dinner go up to the sitting area on the second floor. The views are amazing and the furniture is relaxing. Bathrooms are clean and staff is friendly. I don't do fancy and expensive all the time, but every once and awhile I like to treat myself! read more

Being concerned about Christmas Eve dining availability, we made reservations for Hecks' a few weeks in advance. So, with some time on my hands a few days before our arrival I checked the most recent Yelp reviews. Yikes! Expecting the worse we kept the dinner reservation. (I was hoping for the "Do you have reservations?" question from the hostess, so we could reply, "Yes, but we came here anyway", but that didn't happen.) We were pleasantly surprised. The service was very friendly and attentive. Our food was great. I had the bison burger which was cooked medium well as requested, the fries were crisp and hot. The Mrs. soup was reported to be very good, but a bit cooler than she would have preferred, but she didn't feel it warranted a complaint. The server came by several times and we even had a visit from the general manager. I got the impression that if there was a problem it would have been handled. The dining room was beautiful, the view was great, prices while higher than in town were reasonable. read more

Heck's is located inside the main lodge at Devil's Thumb Ranch. It is modeled after the Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, OR. It is gorgeous and rustic, with elegant flair. It has a beautiful view of the meadow and hills of the ski trails as well as the iconic "Devil's Thumb" rock formation close to the Continental Divide. There is a classic bar, sofas and armchairs around the fireplace and ample table seating. We always sit in an area adjacent to the windows. There is always room. The place is underutilized. I think that is because they have never quite "found" themselves as a restaurant. Ever sInce they opened, they have been highly variable in menu selections and quality of the food and the service. One of our past visits was truly abysmal. I am hoping they have finally found their niche because on this visit (and we have visited all but one season since they opened) we had the best experience in the restaurant that we have ever had. The food was good, in fact, my duck breast with cherry balsamic sauce and winter veggies, was actually great. Best meal I have ever had here. My husband's meal (lamb-burger on focaccia) was very good. It came with very ordinary french fries but if they had served it with the terrific smashed/fried small potatoes that my meal did, and/or an arugula salad, it could have been great. The breakfasts were traditional lodge food and well prepared. The staff was more plentiful and better trained than in the past. This year, they were really using the bar to their advantage. They had good HH offerings for after skiing, both food and drink. We enjoyed drinks by the fireplace and met some interesting visitors. There was a bubbling crowd which livened the place up and people were talking about the offers they had gathered from Winter Park. I hope this becomes the established experience now and we can count on getting this sort of food and service in the future. We shall see, as we plan to visit again later this season. read more

Not a good experience: - understaffed at the front of the restaurant: one poor woman dashing about seating people, taking reservations, and answering the non-stop phone - understaffed on the floor, with a young and distracted waitress that didn't check on us nearly enough - 45 minutes from being seated until having a plate of bread for the table, and only after explicitly asking for it after seeing the next table over get served with the same promptly - appetizers came right before main course - waitress forgot my drink order (then comped it to her credit) - Mac 'n cheese for the kids is all smoky and frankly awful-tasting to a kids' palette--I should have remembered this from the prior time we tried this a few years back - S'mores outside is kind of underwhelming when one must walk to the kitchen and beg for some graham crackers and chocolate--all that was there was one forlorn bag of marshmallows We like the ambience. We like the concept. We did not care for the execution at all--not well done, management. read more

Front desk said, "We are over sold and understaffed. Sorry. Also, there are great restaurants in town, but we can't take you because the shuttle isn't running." (Hmmm... so are you going to adjust my rate?) So why wouldn't the RESTAURANT staff for the people the HOTEL has overbooked!?!? Stay away, folks! Maybe after the 2020 election (I mean, COVID), this will be a great restaurant with people who actually care about service. My dearest Heck's, you truly have one heck of an ambience out at Devil's Thumb. The lodge feel is cozy and the three tiered fireplace simply divine. Should you be seeking solely those things, perhaps instead see out a review for the hotel and its accommodations, as you will certainly not need to dine here to experience those things. We made reservations for later in the evening after being told that the dining room was crowded-- we arrived early and were met with a number of tables that had yet to be bussed, but did not still have people dining at them. It certainly did not appear to be full, but they still took a moment to seat us. We sat for quite some time prior to being helped, and I have to say that I was somewhat perturbed when my pomegranate mule, albeit tasty, did not arrive in a copper cup, which I do know that they possess. This is neither here nor there: the quality of the food leaves much to be desired, especially for the price point. You are, in fact, paying for the ambience as well as for your presence within a desolate landscape. The chicken pot pie wasn't as hot as I was expecting from something fresh off a skillet, the Wedge salad was not sufficiently chilled, and, like our predecessors, our plates too took quite some time to be bussed. We had 3 meals here during our stay at Devil's Thumb and overall everything was great! Meal #1 Beer flights (GREAT way to taste the menu) Wagyu burger & sweet potato fries - the burger was delish! Excellent local beef. The sweet potato fries were not fresh but I loved the spicy flavor infused in them. I loved the brioche bread although it may be heavy for some. Wild game chili - excellent flavor! A little too spicy for me though because I'm a big baby when it comes to spice :-P Meal #2 Salmon BLT - loved how succulent the salmon was. Meal #3 Colorado Trout - So much yes! Loved the corn meal breading. and the kale salad was excellent - great flavor on the dressing as well. The design and decor of the restaurant itself is amazing - it's called Hecks which also stands for "Hex" or "hexagon" - amazing architecture and materials - all the wood is reclaimed from various locations, even the stone used for the fireplace is reclaimed (and that thing is GINORMOUS). The decor in the restaurant and throughout the hotel is so unique, kitschy and clever. We LOVED the wait staff! SUPER helpful and not just because it was the slow season :) The pricing can be a bit high but it is a high end resort and well worth it. read more

We have been coming to Heck's for years. Beautiful indoor space, huge fireplace, and in the summer there's a great big deck to enjoy the breathtaking views of the valley. There aren't a lot of options for restaurants in the Grand Valley. Heck's turned into our go-to for semi-casual dinners. BUT they've STOPPED SERVING DINNER!!! They now only serve tapas, which honestly was just bar food... fried pickles and wings. The resort's other restaurant is far too fancy for a family and doesn't do take out, so we left with two cranky toddlers and 4 pissed off parents who had hoped for a nice early dinner at the place we've be enjoying for years. The ambiance of this place is stunning! The service was hit or miss but it wasn't a big deal with the views they have and no one was rude, just slow at times. They provide a free s'mores kit to use the fire pit right outside which was a perfect after dinner dessert. The food was a decent, they really need get a vegan option something as easy as Beyond Meat on their menu. The vegetable Napoleon was sold out so I had to go with fries and a salad. The fries are delicious though. Breakfast was decent as well, the avocado toast was fresh and delicious. Tip: Make your coffee in your room for breakfast as it's $4 there. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurant settings. The centerpiece, the hexagonal fireplace, is a beautiful structure. The huge windows looking out over the valley is so peaceful. I could sit here all day... Oh, and the food! I always recommend what they're known for: their own cattle. They also carry some world class beers and wines. We ate dinner here for our first night at the ranch. I didn't have high hopes after reading the reviews, but was surprised at just how bad my entree was. My daughter and I ordered the Byer's Peak bowls, which sounded delicious. Sweet potato, rice, lemon tahini dressing, avocado, and corn salsa. What we received was a greasy helping of rice that had maybe 6 pieces or corn and some grilled onion thrown in--no "salsa" to be seen, maybe 1/4 of a sweet potato that was chopped into pieces and undercooked, so still hard/crunchy, unripened avocado slices, and sour cream on top. Sour fucking cream in the vegan entree. No lemon tahini anything. Neither my daughter nor I could manage to eat more than a couple of bites. My husband got a burger and said it was decent. It's a shame it sucks so hard, because we were really looking to have an upscale resort experience where we could pick up for or have it be delivered to the room. Ok. I have been coming to DTR and Heck's for 7 years, and this restaurant has always been hovering right about average. BIG NEWS: DTR and Heck's has a new head of F&B and a new EXECUTIVE CHEF and a NEW MENU. The food is EXCELLENT. I mean, astonishing, and the new menu actually has lower prices, so it's an incredible deal. We had (a) what one friend and another random I spoke to "the best meatloaf I've ever had" (b) these meatballs that were so extraordinary that they would have served for apps, dinner & dessert (c) fantastic chicken pot pie; (d) a great veggie & quinoa dish -- flavorful and fresh; (d) a tangy drink called "devil's garden" -- jalapeños and st Germaine's; (e) the gratis s'mores on the back porch. The setting of Heck's has always been extraordinary. Now the food is a perfect match to the splendor. Get there. read more

I was staying at this resort and had breakfast twice here and drinks a few times. The moscow mules were really good. The House Smoked Trout, Salmon & Bagel Board was really good (although they were out of the trout spread). I really did not like the eggs benedict. The sauce didn't taste good at all. I also asked to substitute the bacon for smoked salmon and they brought out a trout spread instead. Either way, I wouldn't order it again because of the sauce. I also ordered the quinoa and kale salad to go, which they made quickly and it tasted great. read more
