Devils Thumb Ranch Wagyu Burger
Adam M.

The restaurant itself it really nice and the view outside is amazing. The food and service are just average though. The Wagyu burger sounds amazing, my mouth was watering and I couldn't wait to try this $21 burger. Well, it was just an average slightly overcooked burger with no thrills or great taste. There was nothing wrong with the burger, but there wasn't anything above average about it either to warrant that price tag. The waitstaff here wasn't the best either, very slow and somewhat rude (maybe because we brought kids to lunch?) I'd highly recommend checking out Devils Thumb Ranch as it's beautiful but as for Heck's Tavern you can probably find better options for food.

This review is based on our visit in early March 2020 (spring skiing) before the pandemic hit and before the resort shut down. We had simple lunches and a dinner here during our stay. Beautiful rustic interior design with tall ceiling. Great atmosphere of a country inn. Love the central fireplace. Gorgeous view out of the patio and huge windows. Menu is short and simple, though every dish no matter how simple or small was expensive. Quite overpriced given the bar food vibe. But: it's a resort, and they have monopoly. We did love the wagyu beef and the chili. See pictures. Service left something to be desired. They couldn't find our reservation. Another time, they seated us but ignored us for a long time. We had to flag down a waiter to place our order.

Good food and people amongst a gorgeous setting! The cocktails are stiff and refreshing. The staff are from all over the country. The food is delicious. We ordered the Brussels, a burger and the star of the show the Chicken with polenta. The chicken with polenta was soooo damn good we came back the next day for lunch, and even considered having it the following day. The Brussels were the next fav. They were crispy with the perfect amount of sweet and tangy! The burger was just ok. I was looking forward to this due to it being Wagyu raised on the DTR property. If it's not too hot out, I highly recommend sitting outside and enjoying the incredible setting where you have expansive views of the property.

Zucchini Strips - great portion size for a group

We went to Hecks last week mid-week right before closing with friends. I haven't been there since the summer. The service was great especially since they were getting ready to close. I ordered a wedge salad and a cup of Tomato soup. I would give three stars for my meal. I drooled over Gary's meatloaf. It is always good to go with the waiter recommends . I only got one bite but I am looking forward to going back on a snowy day for comfort food. Don't get rid of the meatloaf anytime soon. Yum! And the Zucchini strips were tasty and perfect for a group.

Just the name. So you know where you don't want to go.

I'm not usually one to give negative reviews, but this place is an AVOID recommendation. The food is fine. Nothing to write home about but okay. This morning caused me to write this review. We sat down, ordered, and 45 minutes later the waiter brought our check and asked if we'd like anything else. Well, food would be nice was our answer. He seemed surprised that he hadn't brought us our meal. He disappeared and a few minutes later returned with our order. My husbands steak with the eggs told the story. It had very clearly been sitting under a warmer for quite some time. It looked like a steak that had been sliced for presentation and left to sit and dry out under a warmer for 30 minutes. My omelette was like cardboard. My husbands order came without the green chili advertised on the menu, my daughters chocolate chip pancakes were delicious apparently but lacking the chocolate chips. My son did order a bagel and cream cheese that came out correctly. After we ate the waiter brought us someone else's check, not kidding! 90 minutes later we left our $90 breakfast experien Our orders don't come correctly, both dinner last night And breakfast this morning. Most of the staff seems like they're in slow motion. Maybe stoned. Hard to say. All very nice but a line of people waiting for reservations, uncleaned tables, plenty of staff but they kind of wander around. My guess is poorly trained and poorly managed. This is our first trip to the Devil's Thumb Lodge in WP. Based on our experience with this restaurant it's not likely to be a place we revisit.

Last week I had the opportunity to travel to Devil's Thumb Ranch in Tabernash, CO for a site visit where our company plans to host its annual manager retreat. Concluding our tour of the property and rooms, our host treated us to lunch at Heck's Tavern. The architectural design was inspired by the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood in Oregon. The floor-to-ceiling fireplace in the middle of the room is quite spectacular. The hexagonal shape of the restaurant makes for many panoramic views while dining. The menu features several ranch to table options including their own Wagyu beef. I tried the BBQ Wagyu Ranch Burger which was topped with onion rings, BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese. The burger was awesome; juicy and flavorful! In lieu of fries, I ordered the salad as my side dish. It came with a creamy lemon parmesan dressing that was very pleasing. $22 might be hard to swallow, but since my meal was comped and it was so tasty -- swallowing was not an issue. But honestly, for hyperlocally raised Wagyu beef amdist absolutely stunning views, I would highly recommend it! Note: one doesn't necessarily need to stay at the lodge to visit this restaurant. They are also open for breakfast and dinner. If you are in the Winter Park area, stop on by.

Food is inconsistently good and be careful when you go because they often are closed to anyone that isn't staying in the resort.

Excellent BBQ, sauces, sides AND margaritas!…read more We're here in WP for three weeks. This is our second visit to The Smokehouse in the last 10 days. The first time we were disappointed upon arrival when they were out of burnt ends. We're from KCMO and we judge a town's BBQ by their burnt ends. Nonetheless, the brisket, sauces and sides were enough to warrant a second visit. Oh, and that house margarita...chef's kiss! Just what a tired ass mom needs after a long day of "hey moms." On the second visit, I went early at 4PM and ordered carryout. AND a margarita while I waited! The margarita is simple, the perfect size and made with all fresh ingredients. It rivals more notable ones around town. This time, they had ALL the burnt ends and boy, were they worth the wait! I got a one meat platter with burnt ends, collards and Mac n cheese. My husband got a two meat platter with burnt ends, brisket, beans and slaw. We got KC and Texas sauces (they have 5 or 6 to choose from, all inspired by different BBQ regions in the US). Both platters came with cornbread which is the only thing that needs some work IMHO. It's small, dry and not worthy of the calories. But EVERYTHING else was soooo good! Fatty, juicy, flavorful meats. Balanced sauces. And delicious sides! The Mac, collards and beans get an A+, the slaw is a solid B. Service was great on both visits. Friendly, efficient and fast! One thing to note is they have an adorable patio. I've not eaten out there yet but it's well maintained with lots of flowers and good coverage from the sun. Might have to check it out on our third visit!

What kept me from giving it five stars: This place is small. If you come with more than a few people good luck finding anywhere to sit. The soup was lukewarm. It was 22 degree and snowing on the side of a mountain, we need HOT soup! My advice to get to five stars: bump up the heat on those soups and serve some cornbread with the soup. The crackers were fine but we didn't even think about eating the slider buns you offered.

I was full halfway through, but it was so tastyI couldn't stop eating until my plate wad clean. The vibe of this place is laid-back and very welcoming. The high ceiling and general decor is casual and comfy. There is also outdoor seating available. I can't leave this place a review without commenting on how cool and friendly everyone who works there has been. They have a way of making you feel like you are an old friend who just happened to stop by.

This place does an incredible job cos-playing Yellowstone while completely ripping you off with a smile. It's a rustic-chic facade designed to distract you from the fact that the kitchen is operating at a high school cafeteria level. If you're going to charge "Wagyu" prices, you shouldn't be serving a steak that is bone-dry and flavorless. The rosemary potatoes had zero hint of herbs, and the broccolini inexplicably tasted like fish--a massive red flag for kitchen cross-contamination. To cap off the "fine dining" experience, our dessert arrived at the table still frozen in the center. It's clear nothing here is actually made in-house. Beyond the culinary failures, the bill was a mess. They conveniently "forgot" to honor their own Wednesday special ($50 off a $100+ bottle of wine). When you're spending over half a grand on a meal, you shouldn't have to audit the check for basic math and promised discounts. The only reason I didn't make a scene at the table was out of respect for our server, Bill, who was professional and hardworking. It's a shame the management and the "chefs" are hiding behind their front-of-house staff while running a total grift in the back. All hat, no cattle. Save your $600 and go literally anywhere else that actually knows how to thaw a dessert and season a potato.

We arrived at 5 pm (So early) for a bar table before the dinner rush. It was such a disappointment of a night for the amount of money we paid. I'd never write a review but because no one came to Talk to us about the issues I felt like honestly we were a number and no one cared. My 55 dollar bar menu steak came out cold and undercooked (a rare flank steak cold is like chewy jelly) we told the server and she said, I'll tell "somebody"and didn't come back- even for me to order a glass of wine. There was no manager that came to help with my cold steak, and we were never offered anything else at that point. We asked for a box for my child's meal which we never received, were never offered dessert and left feeling just kind of jilted. I understand it's first world problems too. But because you can't leave this place with out paying $200 and nobody seemed to care, I felt like a review mattered.
