There was a 5% kitchen service charge that was not disclosed until the bill came so we included that as part of the 21%. Right off Highway 40 just inside Tabernash. I was expecting a rustic tavern, but it's pretty nice and classy inside, with a surprising wide array of food options. Service was attentive and friendly, even though they were pretty busy and we didn't have a reservation. We tried the Grilled Bacon Steak (bleu cheese on the side for her, because yuck) with wild mushroom sauce. This was one of the best appetizers I've had in a long time. It was delicious, and plenty of mushrooms that would have been delicious without the bacon. She ordered the soup de jour, a Thai curry soup with seafood. She said it tasted more like a tomato soup with seafood - she would have given it 3 stars. I ordered the lamb burger with fries. Unlike many places with lamb burgers, this one comes with more Mediterranean-like toppings like feta. This was the first or second best lamb burger I've ever had - it was delicious! The fries were dark, almost like sweet potato fries and I had to ask to make sure they were regular potatoes. They were - cooked just to that fine line between crispy and burned, but for all but the smallest pieces, they were just right for crispy thick fries with some crunch. This was a five star meal. The rest of the menu looked delicious - reinforced by a serving platter of meals for the table next to us - everything looked fantastic. I really wanted to try the extremely fancy meatloaf they offered (so many wild and fancy meats mixed!). Maybe next time.... If you are near Tabernash and want some upscale food (including fancy traditional tavern fare), give this place a try. read more

We had a guys weekend in Winter Park and this was the last night's dinner. After a few days of spending time together and staying up way later than we should have, drinking way more than we should have....this was a tamer dinner. Dan was our server, he was professional and helpful when we needed him. He did make an accommodation at the end, but informed us that there is no splitting checks in the future. 6 total, we paid 3 with cards and 3 with cash so he received a nice gratuity at the end. I had a drink, the jalapeño margarita which was really tasty. It bites harder than you think! When you get to the bottom it is tough to finish. Maybe try a straw so you can mix it up occasionally. Some of us got salads, others went with French Onion Soup. I have to say, I was very happy I went with the soup. Came in a pretty standard crock, emmental cheese and lots of onions and beef flavor. What made this a little more enjoyable was a few small fried onions on top for a crispy experience and a nice change to the gooey cheese layer. Altogether a great opener for me, the people who had salads were happy too. Some of the guys went with fish and chips, others went the steak route. I personally wasn't super hungry so I chose to get the seafood Mac and Cheese (traditionally an appetizer) as my dinner. Saw some lobster, but the most prevalent protein was shrimp. The breadcrumbs made for a great addition at the end. It also had peas in it which was nice. Very enjoyable. The guys that had the steak said they were cooked to their liking. I'm not sure if they felt like the pricing was worth it, but these days you have to expect some inflation. One guy ate it all so it couldn't have been that bad. We passed on desserts and coffee and everyone was pretty much drained after dinner. They looked busy here, lots of space in between tables so it doesn't get super loud or your back is up against another person. I enjoyed the meal. We stopped in for a glass of wine after a hike (around 4 pm). We were early so it wasn't super crowded at the bar. I love a couple of their new appetizers. One was the baby back ribs, so tender and falling off the bone. They were served in an Asian style with papaya and black sesame seeds, lychees and dragon fruit. It was a very cool dish for this area! We also just loved the Asian style calamari with wasabi peas and a delicious lightly sweet Asian sauce. We would order those appetizers again. The quesadillas appetizer was way too heavy for our taste. The cheese and tortilla overpowered the meat and they were too soggy. That's one I would pass on next time. It's always a fun time at the bar, locals and tourists. Bartenders are friendly and helpful. We decided to stop in for dinner a couple of days ago. While standing by the host desk waiting to be seated, we watched a waitress eating a huge mouthful of something right in front of the kitchen where the food is served. She said "Mmm, that's good" to someone and then proceeded to LICK HER FINGERS to get the rest of the frosting off of them. She then wiped them on a wet rag that was on the line and picked up her food order. If she is willing to do this in front of everyone walking in the front door, what is she doing out of sight? One of the best meals I have had in a while. Casual, rustic exterior belied the quality of the meal from start to finish. Mexican wedge salad was a novel twist on the classic salad. Soup was great. Had the El Chingon- adobo lime brushed sirloin with poblano enchiladas to accompany which was an incredible collection of flavors. Finished with Autumn Berry shortcake which was fantastic. We finally got to try TT on this trip to Granby, we've tried before and it's always had a long wait so we made a reservation this time. We always assumed the wait would be worth it, however we left fairly disappointed. The positives first: The jalapeño margarita was pretty good, not sure $12 good but I had two so I can't complain. I love Brussel sprouts and the buffalo Brussels here were really good. Not so good: the meatloaf unfortunately didn't register my top 10, it wasn't bad it just did not warrant the price tag it came with and the mashed potatoes were average. The chicken plate was big and had good flavor but the menu said grilled and it was actually charred. Last night we visited Tabernash. The food and service was fabulous! We ate Mac and cheese app with mushrooms and it was beyond yummy. My son and I both had the onion soup which was so tasty. I had chicken caprese main which was an interesting and yummy dish. We also had the desserts. Both mud pie and the bread pudding. I liked the bread pudding better. I was stunned at how this unassuming roadside tavern produced such amazing food & wine, not bc each & every single person I encountered there during my visit treated our party with some of the best customer service I've ever experienced, they did, but bc it's just right off the side of the road in the middle of nowhere Grand County. Very nice! Good service! Good food. Started with their Wild Meatball featuring Antelope, Wild Boar and Venison with porcini polenta. Delicious. The meat ball was dense but large and tasty. Polenta was fabulous. Ordered a halibut special over risotto. One third of the fish was over cooked but the rest was melt in you mouth. Their pork chop, bone in, with Brazil nuts a jam mixture, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and broccoleeni was amazing. Atmosphere was sparse, I think due to social distancing. Maybe not exactly fare to only give 3 stars on the first trip. I'd give 3.5 if I could. My dish taste really good. I just think the prices didn't match the quality. To start a app of Brussels was $16. They had buffalo style Brussels. And a side of maple Brussels for $6, Because of my wife's diet preference we asked if we could get an appetizer for f Brussels with maple. The waiter said sure we can give you a couple of sides to make it. So doing the math that would mean 6x2=12, well no they charged $16. And as I mentioned the quality just didn't match the prices. The Brussels were in 1/2s and literally just had maple syrup poured on them. They were mushy and the f you put maple on a dog turd you can make it taste good. And I know that sounds a bit hash. But I make better Brussels at home. My meal was called New Mexico Chicken and Waffles. The dish had green beans with bacon chunks, crispy onion straws and roasted cherry tomatoes. The dish tasted excellent, great flavor syrup on Mexican crispy waffle. The green beans tasted great. The dish was just weird. Didn't seem to go together. It was like a episode of chopped where they were given a basket of ingredients to make something. The 1/2 chicken was overdone and meat was dry. Like I said the taste was excellent. It was $32 for chicken and waffles and it wasn't moist like they didn't brine it or marinate. My wife just ordered a Caesar Salad so that's pretty simple but it was $16 with no protein. She said it was good but not special. This brings me to the dessert. I just had to give their dessert a try. They had s'mores crème brûlée. And for this I would actually come back for. Even though it was a little weird to have teddy graham's on a dessert. The brûlée was seriously good and unique. And a side of what they said was marshmallow ice cream that was definitely homemade. I went here with my family and friends from out of town based on great reviews. I was surprised when we saw the burgers were $25 then realized you have to pay $3 extra for cheese on top of that. All other extras like bacon are an additional $4. Far more than I have ever paid for a burger in Denver or any other major city! I figured that if you are paying $28+ for a burger it should be amazing.. not so.... All of our burgers were very dry and not cooked to what we ordered. The server never once asked how our food was. Not only that, the burgers have nothing on them. It's meat and bun...with tomato, lettuce, etc on the side with little plastic cups of ketchup and mustard you can add yourself. Last Thursday was my first time at Tabernash Tavern and it will be my last. I had heard good things so I was very excited to have a fine dining experience. WOW, what a surprise. We were seated in the "Penthouse ", don't think there's any real heat there. Several of us kept our coats on the entire time we were there. Questionable service, not very attentive and certainly not very friendly. Then there's the food. My husband and I ordered the NY Strip. Very disappointed nothing special about this steak. Another one in our group ordered the Rib Eye steak and when it was delivered it was cold. We've had better steaks at the Sagebrush in Grand Lake and the Bluebird at Granby Ranch. We spent two weeks in the Granby area and finally got to try Tabernash Tavern. Absolutely NOTHING disappointing about our visits. Yes, visits. We went twice and enjoyed both experiences. I did make reservations both times, per a friend's recommendation. They're only open Thursday through Sunday during the summer months. The building itself is a typical side-of-the-highway tavern, but the ambiance once you enter is phenomenal. Small-town in the west feel, but so quaint and cozy. We sat in the bar area once, and in the back of the restaurant next to the fireplace another time. Decor is right on par with the Grand County vibe, the bar looks like any other tavern bar. But the wine menu is TO DIE FOR! And the food menu was amazing. I mean, amazing. Everything unique and cultural, with a lovely Argentinean twist that my husband and I recognized immediately. Frank was our waiter both times, we all loved him. Attentive, personable, always a big smile. For that matter, everyone we encountered was much like Frank - happy, inviting, kind, warm. How does this place not have 5 stars on every review?!? The people and ambiance were so inviting when we walked in the door. We were greeted by Leia (sp) who was friendly, and knowledgeable. She took us to the most perfect table for two, near the fireplace. It was cold and rainy outside but we were warm and cozy inside. Then we met our server Mari...what a beautiful soul she is! So friendly and had great recommendations. We started with a drink and sat in these big comfy chairs right in front of the fire. It was delightful! Then our Goat Cheese Relleno came out and oh my, was it good. The red sauce had just the perfect zing of spice, and the buttery toast points were a perfect accompaniment. We chose the Lamb for dinner (not on the menu, but the chef's special for the night). In all honesty, it was the most delicious lamb I have ever had. Cooked medium with a crust that was absolute perfection. The red wine Demi glacé was delicious and I had no qualms about picking up that lamb with my fingers and dipping each bite. We decided we wanted a little something else and ordered the Seafood Mac and Cheese...which was superb. We decided to end our meal with the Huckleberry Cheesecake and it was amazing! We have gone several times, and I have to say, it is very hit or miss. And given how expensive it is, I cannot recommend it, unfortunately. Sometimes the stars align and the food is great, and the service is too, but sometimes both are just awful, and there's no way to predict which will be true.
