While I didn't go to diners in its hay days, the ones that survived and were still around as an adult I did visit, and very much enjoyed the unpretentious atmosphere, wholesome down to earth American food, and most importantly economical prices. Those elements that define this cult classic is embodied in Jim's. The food isn't going to wow you or scare you away, it's right down the middle. The staff are super friendly. And the biscuits were so damn good! And on top of all this the waitress was super nice. Literally what you would picture when you think of a waitress in a diner, calling you "hon," and ,"sweetheart." This was only my second visit to Jim's in 10 years. Honestly, I prefer going to get breakfast tacos if I'm going out on Sunday morning. I noticed they were on the menu, but didn't try them. I sort of made my own by ordering a side of tortillas with my omelette. Omelette was definitely notch below IHOP's in ingredients and size. But the buttermilk pancakes were clearly larger and taste superior to IHOP's! Pancakes are not included with the omelette, so my wife, the pancake fiend, ordered three and I ate one of hers. Not enough syrup was brought, so we asked for more and were brought too much. Waitress was really rushing us. So much so, that she seemed more interested in where I was placing the menus than listening to me request salsa, tabasco and ketchup which she did later forget. She was nervous and harried throughout our time at Jim's and made me the same way! We weren't half finished with our meal when the check was brought. Annoys me every time. Well maybe a slight delay on occasion, due to them being super busy... ; but that's all fine, since the wait staff really listens, cares, and you feel like you'd want them as your next door neighbors. These folks go out of their way to help. Once upon a time, I couldn't make it in to leave a deposit for pie. The gal who answered the phone said it was Ok, because I seemed like a sincere guy. When you first walk into Jim's you'll be wondering if they just changed the Denny's sign out front to "Jim's". It was the same ole same ole as you get at any Denny's, Ihop, etc. Our waitress was very sweet and on the ball, which I did appreciate! She never rushed us and kept the coffee topped off, but always asked first before she messed up your perfectly balanced cream & sugar. Our food was just as ordered with no mistakes! The food was decent. Again - good ole diner or Denny's style. I had the migas plate and everything was hot and had good flavors. My man's chicken fried steak was a little tough, but decent. For the area, it's pretty good. And I've had a hard time finding better (though I do wish I could). Is it worth waiting in line for half an hour vs driving into town, no. Highly disappointed tonight after I called Jim's four times trying to place an order I sat through the ringtone each time not only that but when I got home my steak looked a little small for a 10 ounce ribeye so I whipped out my food scale and turns out it was only 5 ounces what a rip off! I love this place. It's not usually crazy busy but they always have customers. I love it that if you come in regularly, they usually remember you. And they don't seem to have a lot of new staff so it seems people like working there which is always a good sign. One main thing I like is that police officers, sheriffs, constables and highway patrol go in there and eat at night. The restaurant has made them feel comfortable to do that. They sit there with their computers and eat their dinner. A few times, I've seen them have to just get up and run out. I love a police that allows them to do that. The staff is always great here and I've never gotten bad food out of the 100 or so times I've been there. Thank you! read more

My husband and I go here regularly for our pancake fix. The pancakes are consistently good and huge. We normally split a short stack since there is more than enough to share. Today we split the 2x2x2 and ordered a side of hash browns. The waitress was very helpful and told us that there was a half order of hash browns that we could order that wasn't listed on the menu. I'm so glad she did since the half order was plenty to split. The service is always good and friendly. Highly recommend this place to get you breakfast fix. read more

Having grown up in New York City, I do appreciate a good diner...and Jim's is a good diner! My husband and I especially enjoy their breakfasts, their pancakes and their coffee. Never been to Jim's. Seriously. I drive by this location daily. From the looks of it, it's been here for ages and caters to many regulars.. especially at 3am. 3am would be the only time I would even consider dropping in here. It brings back memories of my time cooking at Burger Chef in the late 70's. Plastic, corporate, formica and polyester. I cruised in and hopped up to the bar to dine. I immediately got the surreal feeling that I was staring at Vera, Alice and Flo being busy. I half expected to have Mel Sharples come out from the back yelling "Kiss my Grits!" To the right of me, there was a youngish gentleman sitting and methodically swaying back and forth waiting on his meal. Alice and Flo were mothering him, letting him know his food was almost ready. Meanwhile, Vera asked me what I would like to eat. I stared at the massive menu and couldn't figure out what to order. I just said some eggs? She finished my sentence politely, bacon and hash browns? Yes, perfect, thanks. Meanwhile, a large group behind me where finishing up their meal, laughing and saying their goodbyes to everyone in the restaurant. Alice commented about a young couple at the back they needed to keep an eye on. Flo said Hi and asked how was I doing. My neighbors meal came out. Definitely off the menu. A large plate of Mashers and a another large side of Mac & Cheese. He quickly grabbed the Mac and slammed it on top of the Mashers and mixed them together and splashed some type of bottle salsa on top and exclaimed, "Yay, my baby food". ?? My order arrived with perfectly scrambled eggs, some crispy slices of bacon and Hash Browns. Okay, I have to admit, I forgot how great perfectly cooked Hash Browns are at 3.15 am. I finished up my meal, my neighbor let out a belch that sounded like a barge was coming through the diner and I asked Alice if they had any matches. Nobody has matches these days. She said she didn't, but she though Mel might have an older bic lighter laying around in the back. It was retrieved and I was told I could have it. I offered to pay for it, but they declined. I left a $7 tip, calculating the price of the lighter. As I left, I looked at the lighter a little closer and it had "Star Stop" branded on it. I have been going to this Jim's since I was like 18 in 2000. I still love it. It's always hopping and it always has fast service and sweet waitresses. Ironically... kinda like in Amtrack... you wouldn't expect such great food but even the steak is good here!! Great eggs Benedict, and I love the French toast.:)) read more

My nephew and I went today, around 4pm, he ordered his regular a ribeye with French fries and mashed potatoes. Their ribeye is usually surprisingly pretty good depending on the cook. Today the waiter brings out the ribeye meal, we tell the waiter that this is not a ribeye, looks like a cheap cut of sirloin. The waiter swears that it's a ribeye so he brings the kitchen manager, he tells us that it is a ribeye but it looks like that because their charbroiler is broken and they had to cook it on the flat grill and press it. Dude, I cook ribeyes on an iron skillet and they never turn into this mess. My nephew and I do cook a lot of beef: cast iron skillet, open grill, and smoke beef, chicken and pork we know a ribeye from a sirloin. My nephew is a lot nicer then me, he tells them that he'll keep it but it's not a ribeye, he has about half and asked for a box. Go to pay and the manager asks if everything was ok, she realized that we were the ribeye customers and repeats that it's the grills fault, I tell her that I know that it's not, we're taking it to give to the dog. We head to Bush's chicken on Brodie lane to get my nephew some food, outside the door are two dogs, he cuts the remaining piece of meat and gives it to the dogs. Looks like Jim's is cutting quality in order to save money, food is usually good here even though they can't seem to retain employees. Would not be surprised if they closed soon. read more

The food was actually delicious - I had the steak fajita migas. The problem was a completely disinterested staff and a dirty restaurant. The place looks like it's only ever been wiped down with a damp towel, so there's a greasy film on everything - even the menu. I'd recommend it higher if it was cleaner. read more

Usually don't write reviews. When I read something this "Hippy Chic" Robin it reminded me of the South Park episode of Yelpers rating restaurants. It was hilarious. Jim's is an icon which originated in San Antonio that is nothing... nothing like Denny's or I Hop. Any critic can tell by the ingredients/cooking style used to prepare the food. Jim's is a home style diner with a limited number of locations in Texas with roots/home office out of San Antonio, TX. I Hop & Denny's are corporate machines grinding out thousands of locations. Only God knows where they don't exist. Their food almost taste prepackaged because of the lack of scratch cooking. This Robin Hippy Chic needs to stay in her Mother Earth lane and out of the restaurant review lane. Sorry for the rant but I felt compelled. read more
