On a Sunday morning, we decided to have brunch. Luckily, my partner found Jim's Restaurant as an American style diner. We drove to the restaurant and found parking right away. We didn't have to wait very long after writing our name on the waiting list. We thought that the food should be okay because the waiting area was full of local patrons. Checking the reviews on Yelp, the chicken fried steak looked like the dish to get! I ordered the chicken fried steak with 2 eggs over easy, a side of fruit and wheat toast. The eggs were really good! The chicken fried steak was very dry and salty. The fruit was colorful and most of it was fresh enough. As we were eating, we wondered why it was so hard to breathe. Then we noticed black mold on the ceiling which was kind of everywhere. Looking at the couple in the booth behind us, they had a large dog sitting that was not a service dog, on the bench seat in the booth behind us. The dog wasn't so bad. After we paid for our meal, we looked up at the ceiling near the waiting area and saw more black mold in the ceiling which was very not okay. We won't be back. read more

Going to Jim's on a Sunday morning was such a feeling of nostalgia. There was about 9 parties in front of us but was able to get seated right away sitting at the bar. The staff was very friendly and quick, even with a Sunday rush they still were able to check in on you multiple times and get you what you need! The vibes of this restaurant makes you feel like you're back in the 1990s eating breakfast with your grandparents, the staff knowing your name and catching up with you about how your family is and why you haven't been around in the past few weeks (we saw this happen in real time and it was so cute). The food was really fresh and hot when it came out. I got there as breakfast with egg whites, bacon and pancakes and they were all really solid. Can't go wrong with these items. The food and service were excellent, but I was very concerned about the cleanliness of the restaurant. Several ceiling tiles appeared old, stained yellow, and some showed signs of mold. This was especially concerning over the booth seating areas where customers dine. The overall environment felt dusty and unsanitary. During my visit, I found a piece of dust/debris in my drinking water. I also observed a cook who was not wearing gloves or a hair net, and witnessed unhygienic behavior in the kitchen area. It seems management may not be prioritizing cleaning and food safety standards. I would strongly recommend a temporary closure for a deep cleaning to address these issues. I enjoy the food and hope to return in the future, but I cannot recommend dining here until the cleanliness and food handling practices are improved to meet health standards. To Management / Health Department, I dined at your establishment recently and wanted to provide feedback. While the food quality and service from the staff were excellent, These conditions do not align with standard health code requirements and pose a potential risk to public health. I respectfully suggest a temporary closure to conduct a thorough deep cleaning and staff retraining on food safety protocols. I plan to revisit in approximately two weeks. If these conditions have not been corrected, I will have no choice but to file a formal complaint with Austin Public Health / department. First let admit , I eat here several times a week. Many of the servers have been here a long time and know me as a regular. That said , I eat here often because it's the most consistently great food and service. But I wanted to add this tidbit that should make you feel good about dining here. I seated myself at the bar and proceeded to order a half-and-half, tea, and a double meat cheeseburger, and fries.. Before I start speaking about the food, let me speak briefly on the gnat infestation at this place . The gnats we're not small they were pretty big in size. The service was very friendly and our waitress gave great recommendations for our food. Her name is Michelle. The ambiance seemed like a place to take your family to eat, it was homey inside. Always came to refill my coffee but I wish they had some other flavors of creamer. However, I didn't ask so they might have them. My food was cooked nicely, the eggs weren't overdone and the biscuit was actually nice and flaky. We also got the chicken fried steak which had some delicious seasonal jalepeno gravy on top but I wish it would've been crispier. Hit up Jim's on the way to a late night at cap comedy club. My niece wanted onion rings, burger & a shake and I wanted chicken, but eggs, and waffles. We knew in that moment only a diner would hit the way we needed. I recommend sitting at the bar for the full vibe and if you want pie, order that first as they run out quickly, My niece said that the Oreo shake was the best she had ever had. I dipped my chicken strips into a cream gravy that they put on the chicken fried steak. YUM & I don't even like gravy. I love a dive restaurant with great food & a real authentic vibe and Jim's diner is just that. Food reminds me a bit of the old Threadgill's food (before they closed) but in a true diner vibe. We love Jim's. We go here for weekend breakfast between 2-4 times a month and it never disappoints. We have even started trying out dinner options there. I've tried so many things that it's hard to narrow down what is the best! Tried the breakfast tacos this morning and those were the bomb. Huge and delicious. Pancakes are tasty, eggs always cooked to perfection, yummy biscuits, crispy bacon, sides of fruit are huge portions and reasonably priced, delicious chicken fried steaks and gravy, pie (yes, please) - everything is just overall solid. The service is ALWAYS friendly and it's amazing watching the servers work. They are fast, efficient, and the orders are always correct. Hard working chefs in the back doing us all right every day. Would love to see this place get some upgrades because it's pretty beat up from years of serving this community but it definitely is just an old school diner. One star off because I ordered extra crispy hash browns and not crispy bacon and got crispy bacon and soggy hash browns. The building is older but they keep it clean. They serve all of your classic items and the portion sizes and prices are extremely affordable. Food was absolutely delicious I got their pancakes and southwest Omlette. I used to frequent this all the time - for breakfast as well as their famous frontier burger. Have to say, I was sorely disappointed this time around d. The burger buns were dry and old - the patties were tasteless ( like frozen patties are). I would have to say it was in the bottom ten burgers I have had in my life. the soda was actually flat - and given their short staff , I was reluctant to ask for a substitution. I ordered the Chicken Fried Breakfast (Steak) and Cinnamon Roll for me and the roommate and there was enough to go around for almost 4 people. Unlike a lot of the major breakfast chains, the eggs tasted like they didn't come from a box and the chicken fried steak was pretty tender and the crust was crisp. There wasn't an incredible amount of flavor variety and seasoning, but it was good solid food that was cooked well. Yes I like dinning out expanding my pallet and being introduced to new cultures all through culinary arts but it's nice to have a down to earth simple meal done rite with a smile and great service . I love the club sandwiches here at Jim's they also have an off the menu club called the Colorado club that comes with ham and melted cheese toasted on the flat top . But what I really love here at Jim's is breakfast . They have amazing cinnamon rolls which are good with coffee . The pancakes are way better than ihop which has gone down hill as of lately and the hash-browns are always crisp never soggy . Believe it or not Jim's has amazing breakfast tacos as well including my go to Chorizo egg and cheese . These come with a choice of one or two tacos and a side of ridiculously good refried beans and hash browns . But if your not into breakfast the spaghetti and Texas garlic toast is a close second rite after the Patty melts . You can always ask for half fries and half onion rings with burgers or sandwiches if you can't decide which you like better and finish off the meal with a delicious slice of pie . Jim's will always be one of those places you can rely on getting an excellent meal if you not feeling fancy and want to save a buck or two because it extremely reasonably priced . I do recommend going for breakfast or lunch to get the best service and they close at 8 now after covid .
