Totally dated, small interior with a Cleveland friendly atmosphere. No pretense here, just honest, from scratch grill top cooking for breakfast, lunch, or a casual dinner. My favorite is breakfast and I usually get 2 eggs over medium, home fries, rye, bacon and a side of sausage gravy. Heaven. Lunch with coworkers last week, and we adventured here in Solon. It is your classic old school diner - right down to the fact that is a CASH ONLY establishment. Staff: 5 stars - friendly, down to earth, knew many of the diners Ambiance: 5 stars for look and feel (vintage posters, jute boxes at booth, classic diner feel), 1 star for comfort (sat in a booth and there was absolutely no padding left - just coils, bumps and discomfort) Food: 2 stars - high levels of butter and grease everywhere. I ordered the Hash Nelson, which sounded like a tasty veggie-potato-egg medley, but was nearly all potato and had unexpected hair found in it. Let's be real - Jim's Open Kitchen is somewhat of an institution in this area. If you've never eaten here, are you sure you've really experienced it all in the burbs? My friends and I used to skip class senior year of high school and come here for huge, inexpensive pancakes. And not much has changed. Well, we don't need to skip class anymore, but the food and atmosphere remains the same, homey greasy spoon you'd expect. Sometimes, its good when things don't change. If you're looking for the perfect hangover food, you should already be in the car with cash in-hand (they are cash only). Jim's has all the popular dishes you'd expect at a diner (eggs, hash browns, etc.) served by nice people, and it's not uncommon to see regulars here. Most people love their signature waffles, which come in a wide array of sugary goodness like Banana Foster, Reese's, and Banana Split. Its hard not to love the place! Tried this place for weekend brunch. Pretty good variety between omelettes, waffles and burgers. First impression was not the best when coming in : sticky and really dirty floor. Then the bathroom clearly need attention. The open kitchen and the look of the inside makes it a pretty convivial place. Be aware that it can get pretty hot inside, we did experienced this. For the food, everything is pretty simple, nothing fancy and not looking for something healthy either. If you are vegetarian, only one option in the omettre and breakfast section. Otherwise you will have to go for the sweet : waffles and pancakes. I can't say the food was not good, as it was enjoyable. But I would suggest to add more vegetarian option on the menu and/or maybe able to substitute for egg whites. read more

Cute place, very high-quality food, very reasonable prices. Small, temperature not well-controlled because it is open so you'll feel the heat from the kitchen. No refills offered on the coffee. People are friendly enough. Marking down a couple of points because I felt there was a sense of "entitlement" about this place (see photos of signs): Cash only, don't spend too much time here, wait until your entire group has arrived etc. Also, I visited the second time, and prepare yourself to be ignored if its busy. They will not make eye contact with you standing at the door. Understand this place has been here for a while but is very offputting for new people. I also don't like having to pay a finance charge to use the ATM machine they have on their premises (not my bank). Summary: Complacent, decent prices for decent food. read more

I could eat here every day if allowed to.... Food is amazing and they have a nice mix of breakfast items and standard diner fare. Service is wicked quick and the price cannot be best. Super small and cash only - plan on waiting unless you sit at the counter. We loved getting the Herb Nelson's basically a breakfast hash with fried potatoes and eggs and yummy onions and peppers. They also have some killer biscuits and sausage gravy that my kids love . Milkshakes and coffee are the go to beverages for us - both are equally fab. So good and low key and food is excellent. Seating consists of booths or at the counter on swivel type stools. The counter seating runs the length of the restaurant and overlooks the open kitchen and flat top grill where the breakfast is prepared right in front of you. For the whole experience, you must sit at the counter. The menu consists of typical diner breakfast and lunch fare and everything is made to order. Prices seem fair and service is always top notch. If you're looking for a cozy diner with food prepared by people who actually love what they do all the while patronizing a family owned business, then this is the place for you. I was a little peeved when I got home to find that instead receiving the cheese eggs that I ordered, I received cheese sausage. They literally slapped a piece of cheese on top of my sausage links instead of adding the cheese to the eggs during cooking. Loved this place! Old-style diner with a row of booths on one side and counter service on the other. I had French Toast and Sausage and Hubby had an Omelet, Home Fries and Toast. Jim's is a local institution, and it's celebrating its 60th year in 2019. It's a great place for weekend brunch -- if I were retired, it would probably be a great place for weekday brunch as well. I highly recommend it. But it's a small restaurant, so we sometimes have to wait as long as 15-20 minutes for a booth (there's usually no wait, or a much shorter wait, for seats at the counter). (My experience is on the weekend; I imagine that there are fewer people during the week and probably no wait.) In my opinion, the short wait is worth it, but it may be an issue for families with young children or people (like diabetics) who have to eat on schedule. One other thing: cash only. No credit cards, but there's an ATM on site in case you're not prepared. read more

I really enjoyed my meal. I had a patty melt and home fries; their potatoes reminded me of my dad's Lyonnaise potatoes, ie, pan-fried thinly-cut potatoes. My husband had an omelet that he really dug. (He almost never orders omelets, because he doesn't trust people to cook them properly, so it was good stuff.) Our service was prompt and friendly; someone who seemed like the owner or a manager was training a new person, and he was really nice to her. I like that. Nice people are rad. It's a 50's-ish diner but without the faux kitsch of a corporate chain; it feels homey, like going somewhere that your grandma or grandpa took you when you were little. I really love a good hole in the wall diner, and this place is just that. Not a ton of seating, old fashioned decor like a 50s diner, the food is being cooked right behind the counter.
