I've been here many times since it's a local bagel shop. They have excellent donuts, the square coffee rolls are my absolute favorite, and if you're looking for a place to sit and get work done it's usually quiet. They have a book shelf where you can leave or take books which I think is a nice touch. The workers are very sufficient, they're quick to get your order in and I've yet to get the wrong order in all my years of going. Jim, I hope you are listening. People like myself want to do business with your establishment, but man, you guys make it tough. The comments about the dismissive employees and questionable service are real. There is no reason for someone to come into any establishment, be the only customer there, and be ignored until someone decides "oh well, I guess I drew the short straw and have to serve the customer". What would be nice? "I will be right with you" if someone is busy. Or, "How can I help you?" or yes, even "Thank you" when you give a tip on questionable service. The bagels here are amazing, especially the egg sandwich's and the honey cinnamon wheat bagel when they actually have it. The coffee is great too. New England Coffee Co, the flavor is brewed into the coffee not gross syrups. However, the service is lacking! Doesn't really matter if you chose the barely functional drive thru or walk in; same grouchy and slow staff. They will always continue to clean or stock whatever they're doing and pretend they don't see you when you're in front of them before they acknowledge you. There's one particular woman who always does the drive thru speaker who can barely speak? It's stressful to place even an order for iced black coffee....Once you finally get someone to take your order! I fought through beach traffic after the gym to go there this past Tuesday and was told someone would be right with me and nobody ever took my order! I am not the biggest fan of Dunkin' Donuts coffee but at least they're immediately there for your order so they got my business that am. read more

This was my third visit and I am still astonished on their "system" of running things. There are at least five girls behind the counter working, yet it takes 15 minutes or more to get two breakfast sandwiches and two coffees.... You walk up to the counter and are asked what you want. Instead of waiting to hear your whole order they take one item at a time... then another girl asks you what you would like. Time passes and you have four girls taking care of your order confusing the heck out of you about what is going on (this has been my experience all three times I have been) Then, the latest visit was on Easter morning. We called ahead to make sure they were open and they said they closed at 11 AM. We arrived at 10:30 and were fourth in line of about ten people. At 10:40 another customer walks in the door and a girl behind the counter yells, "Hello people we are closing at 11!! Read the sign!".... I don't know about you all, but this is a quick donut/breakfast sandwich shop.... it should take no more than 5 minutes to complete any order given. Yes, you closed at 11... not 10:40. I'm just going to say it - this place is awful. Hopefully the Gloucester-ati doesn't come and take my credentials away. History: when they were over on Washington, I used to go there a lot for a special cake my friend loved. In fairness, they maybe still make it and maybe it's great. They used to be the only game in town. They're not anymore. Yesterday myself and two friends were cruising around in the afternoon and wanted a good donut. Not really anyplace in town except Dunks for that, so I said we should stop at Jim's - I've never even stepped foot in the "new" (yeah, not new) location and I know people go there. Disclaimer - they were closing in 15 mins. Okay - sure, we didn't expect much inventory. It was so dark, hot as hell (90 degree day, no AC) which always worries me in a food establishment, and dirty. Grimy dirty - not good. But, I can forgive a lot for good food and nice people. Too bad neither were present. The older woman at the counter was rude, barely acknowledged us, didn't answer when asked about items in the case, and eventually a young girl stepped up to assist us. The older also made a comment about how "they're almost closed" to us. Okay - but you're not, you're open, so treat us like customers who'd like to buy something. We ended up getting two eclairs and two turnovers, one apple and one raspberry. Figured we might as well try something while we were there. As we were walking out my friend looked in the box and noticed we only got one turnover. We collectively kept walking out, just not caring anymore to deal with it. In the car we all tried our items - complete disgust all around. Dry, flavorless (but yet left an aftertaste?) eclairs with barely any filling (I did eat just the chocolate icing off mine and that was tasty) and the turnover eater said "I know they said raspberry, but there is literally no discernible flavor to this other than sickening sweet." Being from NY originally, I feel like I know a good bagel. Jim's has a good bagel. However, after experiencing multiple bagels being charred in their toaster oven, I refuse to let them toast my bagel anymore. Additionally, I love breakfast sandwiches with egg, but Jim's "Eggle" freaks me out a little - they microwave the egg in a plastic container. My review is for the doughnuts, which are the most amazing, crackalicious doughnuts I have had in a long time - possibly ever (for me, it's a tie between Jim's and Kane's in Saugus). I feel the need to warn people about the drive-thru window at Jim's. I want to say that when you go inside, the experience is still great. I had an awful experience trying to navigate the drive-thru and successfully get my order; in the end, it was incorrect and the lid was barely on so that it spilled all over my car when I went to pick it up for a sip. Anyway, you have to enter the drive-thru via a street 1 behind the street that the actual restaurant is located on. It's very inconvenient. Apparently, there is a box to place your order, but I never saw it and it looked like cars were just pulling up to the window. I gave the woman at the window my order and it was painful. I assume she's the one taking the orders so it probably would have been just as bad if I'd given them at the box (which I never did spot). I had to repeat the coffee order four times and she still screwed it up. Not to whine, but I cannot stand sugar in my coffee. So to get light cream and extra sugar really aggravates me. As I mentioned, the lid wasn't even on and it spilled. It is far easier to just find parking on the main street (which has plenty). Don't waste your time and get stressed out like I did trying to order at the drive-thru. I will never go to the drive-thru again and I probably won't go back for awhile did the bad experience memories wear off. read more

The first time I went and asked about bagels the girl gave no explanation, no "we just ran out" or "some will be out soon".... Just "we don't have any". Jim's Bagel and Back Shop has great product, reasonable prices and their new location is ideal for commuters and people getting together for a morning cup of coffee and doughnut. I like them, I really do. That being said, their service can be a bit slow, and at times, I feel like their staff doesn't listen to what customer's orders are. I've often asked for an un-toasted bagel with cream cheese on the side and more often than not, they get that wrong. Maybe it's because the moment they'll hear the start of an order, they walk away and start preparing it before you can finish telling them how you want it. It's annoying and not good customer service. Also, and this is just me being nitpicky...there's spelling errors all over their menu. For months the spray painted sign on the ground was spelled "Drive TRHU" and they advertise a craMberry walnut chicken salad sandwich. Call me crazy, but If I owned a business, I'd spell check things before I put it all out there for the public to see. We have been going here at least once a week for the past year. We love the bagels and love that there is a local business to support. But recently we've become so aggravated. We come at all times of day, frequently twice a day, trying to get a range of bagels and they are always out of almost everything. They say spmething like "This is what we do have...plain and everything and one whole wheat." This week we have visitors, so today I got up at 6 to go get bagels. I arrived at 6:20 and they had NO BAGELS except everything bagels. I asked if that was all they had and the woman working there was rude. She yelled to the kitchen, who yelled something back, then she mumbled something I couldn't tell whether it was to me or the mouthpiece she was wearing. I asked if she'd said something to me and she snapped "I said we don't have any bagels! We'll have more in 30 minutes!" I was stunned. Bagels, muffins and donuts are fabulous. Prices are good. Service is HORRIBLE. I asked for 2 spinach and 2 sesame bagels. Got home to discover 2 spinach and 2 cinnamon raisin - yuck! Took almost 5 minutes to get 4 bagels, 2 muffins and 5 donuts...but I only wanted 3 donuts and 2 donut holes. The woman serving us was completely disinterested in helping us and not paying attention to what I was saying. I was being as polite and friendly as I know how while she smiled and rolled her eyes. Recently celebrating 25 years*, Jim's offers some decent fresh bagels (sadly no egg bagels) & delicious donuts, excellent cakes & baked goods, a variety of freshly brewed coffees, yummy cream cheese blends, & some decent sandwiches. Service is Super S-L-O-OOO-W & they sometimes make blatant mistakes w/the orders, especially at their drive-thru. It's very frustrating! Check dates on refrigerated items. Jim, the owner, is a great guy who's very community oriented! There's an area to sit (booth or counter), read the paper or a swapped book, & watch tv & Jim decorate those wonderful custom cakes. It's located right across from the Gloucester train station, too. This place is a joke! I ordered a cake for Nevaehs birthday to pick up at 10 am...I just went to get it and it's not even ready someone came in to place a last minute order and they sold her cake!!!! This is the second time it has happened! So now I have no cake for my 7 year olds birthday. No apology no nothing-just blank stares! Totally unacceptable! The only reason I am even giving this place two stars is because they do have a good menu. Unfortunately, the staff moves extremely slow and is never actually listening when you place your order. From the few times I have been here, my order is either wrong or missing something. You would think being so close to the train management would want a speedy and pleasant interaction for customers. Honestly, not worth the fuss. I would reccomend Dunkin' Donuts before this place. If your not in a rush and looking for a delicious breakfast from a local business (which I am a big supporter of) try Cape Ann Coffee instead. The food is great, staff is respectful and a delight. My reccomendation for Jim's all new staff with a manager on duty for awhile to ensure customer satisfaction is met. read more
