I've been obsessed with scones/biscuits recently and one weekend morning, finding myself with no plans for once, I made the trek to Ipswich to Sandpiper, having heard that they had some of the best biscuits in the state. And, well, I won't keep you in suspense but that first bite of the salted honey butter and jam biscuit was transcendental. It was a little crumbly but so chewy and moist, and the jam and honey butter combo was incredible. Indescribable. They have so many pastry options, as well as breakfast sandwiches, but I really had eyes only for the biscuits. Also tried the cheddar scallion biscuit - amazing. I'm running out of adjectives to describe how good these were. The key for super flaky, tender biscuits is using very, very cold butter and not mixing the dough too much. It was cool to watch people baking in the back kitchen. Got the quiche as well. Tasty, with a nice mix of egg and veggies and cheese, with a well-made crust, but next time I would just get more biscuits. Lots of free parking spots in front and nearby. There's little space inside the store, which makes the queue a bit unwieldy, but it does move quickly and it's well worth the wait (and the drive). read more

The bakery items are the stars of the show, though their gluten free option was one sad small almond cookie. They have brewed coffee, no espresso. They use beans from Portland, ME. The walls are lined with gourmet food products--some local, some not. There is not a lot of space so when there's a queue, it's a mess. read more

Nice bright, airy storefront just up the hill from the town center. Selection is limited, but salads and quiches here were great. Only issue is there is almost no place to sit. Would've been no problem for a nicer day or if we had planned to picnic. Polite and efficient service with many items ready to take out. You will find gluten-free and vegan options. A cute little bakery in Ipswich right next to the library. I came on a weekday for lunch with a friend and got a quiche, cookie, and strawberry apple juice. They also have a menu with breakfast items and sandwiches that are made to order. There's window seating inside and a few tables for outdoor dining. The quiche was really good, a bit eggy with veggies in it and the crust was crispy. The chocolate chip cookie was standard and the molasses cookie was chewy. The strawberry apple juice was something I had never seen before, but was still sweet and had hints of strawberry. The bakery was bustling with lots of people and orders coming in and out. Wow! One of our best finds on our weekend trip in Ipswich. We stopped by for breakfast on Sunday and ordered the biscuit breakfast sandwich, avocado toast, and 2 biscuits to go. The biscuit breakfast sandwich was the best thing we had. The egg was so fluffy, the sausage was so juicy, and the biscuit was crispy and perfect. I'm still dreaming of it back in Boston. Also definitely add the aioli...yum. I think they only offer the biscuit breakfast sandwich on Sundays otherwise you have to get the regular breakfast sandwich. Not sure how that one will compare. The avocado toast was fresh and the cucumbers added a nice touch. The 2 biscuits we got to go were also perfect even 6 hours later. Can't wait to go back when I'm in the area. read more

Super cute and quaint little bakery! I loved their selection of pastries as well as quick to go foods/drinks and sandwiches. Staff was friendly and helpful. I got a tofu sandwich (which I ate too fast to take a picture of) because I was really interested by the flavors in it and it was so good! Tofu can be hit or miss for me but I really liked this one and it was a great veg option. My friend swears by their pastries although I did not get to try them. I also did not try their coffee but can't wait to go back and give it a shot! read more

One word to describe Sandpiper: heavenly. This place is always packed but you won't care about the crowd because the food will blow you away. Run, don't walk, to get one of their biscuits. As I ate a biscuit with orange marmalade on it, I found myself reconsidering my life path and wondering if it would be a smart idea to try to work here to learn their baking ways. But alas, I will be content with being a mere customer, wondering at what alchemy goes on behind the scenes. A few notes: seating is minuscule. Definitely not a reliable meeting / study spot. But if you can get a stool, good for you. Parking, though right out front, is also in high demand. My advice: come early! Coffee is fine; nothing to rave about, but it's a solid support to the baked goods. I love that they also sell random food goods like rye flour. Adds an eclectic feel to the place. read more

This is a hidden gem in Ipswitch! I never would have expected to find such a nice bakery in the area. It's clearly a local favorite, because we struggled to find a place to sit. Everyone was very friendly and had no problem keeping up with the lunch rush. We only came for dessert, so I can only speak for what I saw behind the glass, but everything looked so delicious. We ordered a variety of baked goods: blueberry pie, a quiche, a galette, and a chocolate croissant. The pie was phenomenal; the moist and sweet blueberry filling complemented the dry flaky crust perfectly. The chocolate croissant was good for the bakery, although something about the chocolate filling tasted off. I also think the ratio of dough to chocolate could be improved. In terms of the texture, it was pretty good. As for the other two, I didn't get to try them, although from what I heard, they were both great. read more

We stayed in Gloucester for 2 days (a little "staycation", desperately needed) and got to try a little bit of everything at Sandpiper. The good: the pastries are outrageously good, service is friendly, the lunch sandwiches were bomb (especially the BLT and the Caprese). The so-so: the breakfast sandwiches were a bit of miss - I'm not sure it was due to my expectation of a hearty, filling bacon, egg and cheese, but the way in which the eggs were prepared left a lot to be desired. It tasted like a hybrid between scrambled and a souffle, and it was definitely more of a high-brow breakfast sandwich akin to Flour. Overall, I'd recommend sticking with the bakery goods and lunch sandwiches, but could just be my personal preference. Either way, Sandpiper is awesome and worth checking out! read more

What's not to love? This place is amazing! The food is so FRESH, from the salads to the baked items. They use quality ingredients here and everything is homemade. The bread is just to die for. I've never gotten a sandwich I didn't like here. This time I ordered the turkey sandwich and requested it be on a baguette instead of focaccia. So yummy. I got a toppo as well, which was basically a small brownie bite. It was the perfect size dessert to have after such a big sandwich and it was tasty. I also enjoyed a Pigeon Cove kombucha, one of the numerous drinks they offer here in a small retail fridge (where they also sell hummus, water, homemade chicken salad, among other things). The interior is very cute with some shelving offering boutique-style sauces and kitchen items. There is some bar seating at the window, but not much - 7 seats total. There is more seating outside with some bistro tables on the sidewalk and benches. The service is fast - they move the line quickly and give clear expectations for when your order will be ready. 5 stars for the bakery aspect, but I wasn't a huge fan of their cold brew, as it was too sour/not strong enough. That being said, the pastries here are divine. Their biscuits (which sell out early) are the best I've had above the Mason-Dixon. They have a subtle crunch to the top, that adds so much texture. Additionally, the jam they spread on is clearly homemade and perfectly tart. The quiches here are truly a standout as well. This review is mainly a reflection of the service and not necessarily the food. We ordered 100s of dollars of mostly ready to go items and ordered only one item that needed to be prepared - a simple 3 ingredient salad. There were zero people ahead of us and we came in without having to wait in a line. Over the course of 30 mins I watched as several people behind me received their orders...I watched as SIX employees seemed more occupied by restocking fresh baked granola then with preparing my order. When I inquired about the status of my salad (20 patient minutes later), the rather unfriendly and unapologetic staff indicated that "it would be a while and that it would be better if I waited outside". Apparently I was in her way of restocking the granola. 10 minutes later I was still waiting and when it was FINALLY ready they brought it outside with no apology, smile or otherwise care in the world... Now, I certainly don't mind waiting and I have realistic expectations of a busy establishment but this was none of those things. Not sure why everyone seemed so glum that works here or why they seemed annoyed by my following up with an order that is now almost 40 minutes for a 3 ingredient salad! Side note: the food was amazing so I decide to try stopping by again today (everything else happened yesterday). I just wanted their pre prepared chicken salad...I arrived at 2:30 (they close at 3pm)...all of the chairs were already up and they were counting their register. Clearly they were closing early...but the look they gave me when I opened the door to inquirer was next level. I'm from LA where everyone has an attitude and these two young girls (same from the day prior) did not even make eye contact with me...they were so annoyed I walked in and had the audacity to ask for anything. Lock the door then if you're closed early... To the owner of this establishment, your food is wonderful but your staff needs to get a grip. Most unfriendly people who lack any sort of customer service skills. Out of principle I would never come back and don't recommend that my local family come either. So unfortunate. read more

This place is amazing!!!!! First off the smell when I walked in was so beautiful, a sweet smell of buttery goodness. The actual bakery space is cute and nicely decorated. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant, blueberry turnover, brownie bite, and palmier. The croissant was so warm and flaky, not heavy and greasy like some can be. Easily the best croissant I've had in Boston area (sorry Flour and Tatte). The blueberry turnover was topped with a nice sweet (but not too sweet) frosting and the crust was again flaky and a bit of a crunch. Amazing. Brownie and palmier did not disappoint. The only negative I have about experience is that I did not order more. Go here. Please. You won't be disappointed. read more

We moved to Ipswich from Boston and were so lucky that just one month later Sandpiper relocated from Gloucester. It's such a needed addition to this little town and is our favorite place to take our little family for sweet and savory treats. Also, such a good chai. Not too sweet and of course they have oat milk :) I love that their menu rotates according to what's in season and that they have a morning and afternoon bakery menu so you're always getting something super fresh. Stopped in for some baked goods and coffee before a 5 hour drive home. We were blown away by the quality of the pastries. The cardamom bun was probably the best I've ever had! The scones were fresh and jammy which we loved. The cold brew was really good, it reminds me a bit of a New Orleans cold brew with a hint of chicory flavor. Overall really good. The hot coffee was also good but the cold brew was definitely the star. I would recommend to anyone looking for super fresh tasty pastries! read more

I have stopped counting how many times my husband and I have eaten here. Truly everything on the menu is divine and eating their goods is a religious experience in my book. Today I had the nicoise-ish salad and I almost fell of my chair. Stop. Just stop and take all my money. A few things I will note: They are always busy. Always. And their food is made to order (for the most part), so if you are starving, you better grab a light snack and get in line. It's not a fast food joint. Be prepared and/or call ahead and place your order! They are great about updating their menu online, so check that out first. Get there early. They sell out! You absolutely cannot wait to the last minute to walk in for a "special" on the menu. Save yourself the disappointment. Don't forget to check out the small prepared food fridge.
