Run quickly to Sclafani to try almost anything on their menu. Today's special was the premier of their chopped Itallian (I think that's it's official name). They'd gotten some coverage on a local news show which probably helped fill today's doors, but I've become a regular and they are always busy--but not too busy to have to wait long. The owners are named Rob and Cassandra, both of whom are trained chefs, which means their food is done so well! They bake their freaking bread fresh every single day, and it's wicked good. The chopped sandwich today was so amazing and was way better than some of the ones I've had which seem to dominate reels today. They had some kind of spicy crunchy garlic mayo which was fantastic and didn't overpower the meats. They don't pre-make these or any sandwiches, each made to order, which is so awesomely old-school. Their quality of deli meat and cheese is really exemplary, not grocery store Boar's Head. They have a great, but modestly sized, selection of imported Italian goods including fantastic olive oil, pastas, conservas like anchovies and even caponata! I also urge you to get a made-to-order cannoli, which was absolutely among the best I've ever had. The generous, sweet ricotta filling was thick, but not dense or cloying; we got pistachio and shared one, which was as strategic as slicing a brownie six ways, in the office, to reduce calories. I love this place. Try every single type of cookie they have, and don't miss the pistachio ones particularly, but they are all great. The pastries (best selection on Saturdays) are also fantastic, particularly the lobster tails. I also enjoy the sandwiches and the unusual Italian sodas. read more

serendipity! Drove into town one morning on the way to the Hopper exhibition at the Cape Ann museum. Searching for food and a bathroom (not necessarily in that order) we landed at Sclaffani. What a treat! After a discussion, we decided on a Napoletano. Generous serving of prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, roasted sweet peppers and balsamic glaze on a freshly baked foot-long roll. Heaven on a plate! Between us, we ate the whole thing then picked up pistachio cookies on our way out. All very reasonable. And the nicest people. Wish we could import them to our home town! I'm hooked on Boloney Sanwiches.. Yeah i know i spelled it wrong. Particularly ones from Italian Bakery\delis. My alltime fav is Anthony's in Stoneham Boloney and American cheese with Spicy Mustard, Pickles, Onions, Mayo on Scali Bread. I was in search of a replica of this sandwich and stumbled apon this place. They had no Spicy Brown Mustard and no Scali bread, so a roll without the mustard would have to do. The bread's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside its like .. like , it's like..... It's..... Friggin........... Awesome. This restaurant is magnificent not only in its cuisine but also in the service. I can say that this Bakery does more than just serve bread and meats, it serves volumes of love and joy. As you walk down the many streets of Gloucester you often wonder to yourself where the town comes together, where is there a harmonious relationship between the peoples? As this would seem to be a question hard to answer, it is actually quite simple and beautiful. You find this at Sclafanis. In essence this store is an Italian front with many memories, much love, great food, and great people. There are many places that people will remark to be "the greatest" or "the best" though using these terms would describe a restaurant that has yet to break free of its rudimentary cuisine, not the case at Sclafanis. The Pizmiaf is made on a fresh loaf of Sclafanis crispy Italian bread, followed by the fresh prosciutto sliced in house. After the base of this sandwich comes to form, it is topped with fresh mozzarella slices. Individuality is prided here so you are welcome to put as many of the fresh crisp vegetable toppings on as desired. Lastly this sandwich is finished with olive oil, a splash of balsamic vinegar and their fresh wonderful medley of Italian herbs. If this does not satisfy ones appetite for joy, good food, and good people than they have yet to rethink their feelings. read more

Walked by and decided to take a peek ... we (my friend and I) already had lunch but were both still not quite full so decided to split a slice of their pizza which had peppers, onions and perhaps a sausage topping.
