One of my friends asked me (quite earnestly) if I had ever been to the Community Room Cafe for breakfast because "it's really great". Well, we went there today and I sincerely want to thank that unknown Yelper because the Community Room Café is excellent. We found it in the Constitution Square retail area bounded by Cedar St., E. Main St., Market Sq and Lowrey Place in the center of Newington, CT. Parking is plentiful in the Square's large parking lot. Their space is amazing -big, cheerful, inviting, comfortable, colorful (plenty of orange and black). There are plenty of various seating options in the form of couches, upholstered chairs, table/chair groupings, and counter-style seats by the windows. We saw a few medium sized groups gabbing away at the upholstered seat area and a few industrious folks clattering away on their laptops. We each went with an Avocado Toast (@ $9) with mashed avocado, diced egg, diced tomato, bacon crumbles, cilantro, and Everything bagel seasoning blanketing a big slice of toasted rye. Seriously, one of the best breakfasts we had this year. I went with a small cold brew coffee and a shot of sugar-free caramel ($4.25) while my wife went with a small light roast coffee ($3). We loved everything about the Community Room Café- the food, the vibe, the décor, the service.... Everything. PRO TIPS Their WIFI password is (one word all CAPS) ILOVEMY COFFEE They have a meeting room available to rent for $50/hour during business hours and $100/hour during non-business hours.

Same super lovely baristas who were extremely helpful and gave clear descriptions of their monthly specials. The "Fall in Love" was a no brainer after she told what it was specifically. It was a brown sugar/white chocolate latte, with chai (so basically a dirty chai latte), and I forgot what she said it was specifically, but a spiced cold foam. It was incredible. Deep well rounded flavors without going too far with the spices. They had to use high quality spices to achieve that taste. So comforting without being overly sweet or heavy. I brought my mom and she raved about their tiramisu latte. She thought it was the best version she's had. I don't know that I would go quite that far (having tasted it), simply because I've had many, but it was an excellent one. I hate when places use a catchy title just because of some ingredients that they used. This actually did mirror tiramisu which I'm extremely particular of, so MAJOR points for that. The whole experience really brightened our morning. Can't wait to make it a more regular stop!

I also had the Honey Bun Latte, which was just okay for me; there was a bit too much cinnamon, and I could feel the grains on my tongue. They do have a Banana Brûlée Latte on the menu that I definitely want to come back and try. Overall, a great spot, and I'm looking forward to returning and exploring more of the menu.

They have plenty of seating, some upholstered furniture and we saw a few Friday morning telecommuters working on their laptops and sipping their coffees. Our order was a Chai Latte and a Cold Brew - each was $5. The pours were very large, and I swear that my cold brew was the very best I've ever had. I love coffee, drinking it hot or cold, and what I had here is in my all-time Top Five Percent. It was that good. I had a sip of my wife's Chai Latte and thought it was excellent as well. What really impressed me were the flavors of both drinks- not overpowering, but strong enough to appreciate them. The Coffee Guy has it all - specialty coffees, matcha, chai, espresso drinks, and pastries and sweet treats to pair with your coffee cup. We couldn't resist grabbing a few on our way out, and we took home a box with a Spinach croissant, iced blueberry scone, and a cruffin (croissant/muffin hybrid). We loved our visit to the Coffee Guy, and I was so impressed by the total experience, I just subscribed to their newsletter. I wasn't sure how cozy it would feel, and honestly, I was right. The layout just didn't do it for me. Most of the seating is along the windows, and it didn't really give me that cozy coffee-shop feeling where you want to nestle in with your cup and stay awhile. But I thought, okay, let's try the coffee! They have some fun latte combinations, so I went with one of their popular ones. Then I found out they don't make their own syrups and immediately thought, "Oh no... this is going to be sweet." And yep--it was definitely on the sweeter side. My latte was also, at best, warm rather than hot. My husband loved his coffee, but he only drinks coffee maybe once or twice a week, so he doesn't quite understand my level of coffee expectations. The staff was really nice and pleasant, which I appreciated. Overall, I'd say it's a good, average local coffee spot. Nothing bad, but nothing that made me think, "Yep, I need to come back here."

And who would have thought that a little coffee shop nestled in downtown Hartford would end up being one of the top three coffee shops we've tried on the entire East Coast. There was just something real about this place. We walked in and had the chance to meet the owner, who shared his story with us--how he got into coffee during COVID and the vision behind the shop. You could immediately tell this wasn't a place that was just put together to sell coffee. It was personal. The shop itself was beautiful. You could see that it was made with a genuine love for his culture and Puerto Rico which, if you've never been, is itself a little piece of heaven on Earth. The space felt like an expression of the owner's identity and you can feel that the owner is sharing a part of themselves with their customers and the community. Then we found out that the tattoo shop in the back is owned by his wife, who actually designed the coffee shop for him. What a talented couple... And I haven't even gotten to the coffee. You could see the precision that went into making the latte. Even the choice of espresso was intentional. Instead of using the typical darker-roasted espresso beans you find at so many coffee shops, he uses a medium roast from a local roaster that uses Colombian beans. It allowed the actual flavor of the espresso to come through and gave it a character that felt much closer to the island. I also always keep an eye out on how the milk is frothed and the temperature and texture came out perfect. The funny part is that I wasn't even planning to find great coffee in Hartford. I simply needed somewhere to charge my car, and somehow that stop turned into one of the best coffee experiences of our entire road trip. We also happened to get incredibly lucky. We came on a day they're typically closed, but they had opened because a reggae band was playing out in the street. And let me tell you--the live reggae was some of the best we've heard. Excellent coffee, a beautiful space, a great story behind it, and reggae playing in the streets of Hartford. What a treat.
