I'm seeing really mixed reviews about this restaurant and I can see why. It's definitely not the nicest restaurant I've ever been inside. It's pretty dingy and I think even the best cleaning job could only do so much for the interior of this restaurant. However I wouldn't be scared off because I had major cravings for Mediterranean food. I decided on a simple shish kebab salad and boy did it hit the spot. The steak was tender and the salad inside the pita was colorful and fresh. Tahini was quite tasty and there was a good amount inside. This is a downtown Oak Park favorite. I am a babaganoush snob, and I think the hit the mark on texture and flavor. They offer a range of Middle Eastern options at a good price. One huge disappointment is that their salads already come pre-made. So when I ordered the Fattoush salad it was really really salty and half the veggies (and pita chips) were soggy. It would be nice if they would give you dressing on the side or at least make it an option. The filafil was fresh and delicious. It was crispy on the outside and flavorful on the inside. I order on grub hub/Uber eats once a week and they are cheap with their hot sauces. There's no option to add more hot sauce. You could only add one per order. We ordered the falafel dozen, a combination feast, yogurt salad, and rice wrapped in grape leaves (I forget the name.) The food was decent with the exception of the beef - which was tough and inedible. The falafel was larger than we thought. Everything was definitely fresh. The only drawback to this place is the service and cleaniness. When we walked in, there was something musty in the air - reminded me of walking into a fish and aquarium supply store - kinda wet/moldy/musty. Even when we told them we were eating there, they packed our food to go. It was sitting on the counter for a while and nobody notified us that they were there. The ultimate in Beef Shawarma goodness. Really, this place is as good as a trip to Dearborn (largely Middle-Eastern populated area of Metro-Detroit, for those not in the know). We have been here many times and have tried pretty much everything that does not contain poultry- it is all good. All incarnations of the beef have the wonderful spiced cumin scent and flavor. Drool. The Falafel sandwich is amazing and filling. The rice is wonderful and the hummus tasty. You should also try the smoothies. The Mango- Banana is great! A very small little cafe that's only a block away from the main shopping area. Everything on their menu is authentic, fresh and very tasty. There are only a couple of tables inside, but in warm months have an outdoor patio with a few tables. The prices are very reasonable and I hope to go back real soon. read more

I just order a beef shawarma sandwich with a side of french fries and extra pita bread for delivery. The price is perfect; not expensive at all. The lady on the phone said it would take about 45 minutes to an hour for it to be delivered. I literally live 2 blocks away from this establishment and I thought maybe 'cause it was a Saturday night they'd be busy. It took exactly an hour for it to be delivered. Not only was the whole bag soggy, but my food wasn't warm anymore. The sandwich was decent; maybe if it was still warm it would have been really good. It was my first time having Jerusalem Cafe and I'm not completely against it. Maybe delivery isn't best for them. I plan on walking over some time soon and having their food fresh. My husband and I found this place on a whim! I know we don't get out much. But this place is worth the drive. We don't live very close but we definitely will drive the 20 mins to get their food to go. The food is very tasty and large portions. When we're not in a rush we eat in and love the little salad bar. We always get the combo and the hummus. We've tried other places but their food just has a very unique flavor! Food is prepared fast. Great menu variety as well. This was a surprise find! Really, really good Middle Eastern food! The kabobs, shawarma, hummus and homemade pita chips and toppings bar were all awesome! The seating was a little bad. Not much of it and the decor was just thrown together. Looked kind of dirty too. I don't think Mr Clean would approve. The cashier seemed a little disengaged. Wasn't welcoming or helpful on menu choices. As with all Oak Park establishments, no parking. Unless you want to find a parking garage or lot somewhere and walk. And you'll have to pay to park. This place is absolutely wonderful! I enjoyed the food, which was fresh, tasty and wonderful! I had concerns over a possible food allergy. I asked questions, got answers and had a delicious meal with an entirely new food experience! I got to try grape leaves, which were entirely new to me and the owner had been direct and honest with me, telling me they were something you either liked or hated(I love them!). The owner brought me a cup of tea in a glass as I waited for my food, I am not normally a tea person as it usually leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but this tea is wonderful! Hints of citrus, black tea that was actually sweet and left no bitter taste, it has become my favorite! I tried a new dessert, baklava, which has become a favorite! The beef shish kabob sandwich and the kifta sandwich have become my favorites! I think my favorite thing is the hospitality. Everyone was friendly and nice to be around. The owner let me try a grape leaf to see if I would like it. There was friendly conversation over a cup of tea. There was music playing. Ordered the food at 11am, and according to the Grubhub app it left for delivery at 11:47 am And yet it was delivered at 12:38pm! Cold! When I complained, The manager Muhammad was completely rude and unapologetic. Although he did offer me a free appetizer. The food came cold and un edible . I basically threw it out after a few bites. It just didn't taste good in general. Definitely not the best falafel around by a long shot. Luckily I did receive back part of my money from Grubhub. I definitely would not recommend this place. We just spent a weekend in the Chicago area - and one of our favorite stops was the Jerusalem Cafe. It's in the heart of town on Lake Street - very conveniently near the Wright homes, and Hemingway museum. The Thursday Night Out dinner was the perfect way to explore Oak Park. Every Thursday in the summers - $12 for 4 coupons (menu items) at a wide variety of local restaurants. We had kebob, gyro, taboleh, and a delicious fresh smoothie! No complaints about any of the food, as it was delicious, affordable, and quickly served by the very friendly staff. Having witnessed other delighted diners, enjoying the hummus and Fatoush salads we decided it's a must-stop, during our next visit to Oak Park. read more

My review is based on the falafel and vegetarian plate. It was simply OK. Personally I tend to make better Baba Ghanouj and Hummus and my friends said so. When we dined in, there was a heavy smell of floor cleaner which permeated the dining area. That was a little unpleasant but we were able to sit in an area that didn't seem to be as fumigated. Overall, I was unimpressed. Perhaps their other items are better, but I usually go for Falafel if I'm eating in a Middle-Eastern type establishment. Ive never had falafel prior to lunch today. What a amazing find that was! I was very impressed with the Jerusalem Cafe. I got a chicken pita lunch which came with a plate of rice and a got a side of falafel, since I over head the guy in front of me ordering that it was the best around. The chicken pita sandwich was good, really no complaints at all. If anything there is just way too much food. If there was a down side, it took about 15 minutes to get the food, but if you have the time to wait at lunch. I would check this place out. They also had a Lunch buffet bar, I'm not a huge fan of buffets, but I might try this next time, there had to be about 20 different items to choose from. read more

I had the Chicken Shwarma Entree and received a pile of what appeared to be Mahatma instant yellow rice, mushy veggies and some mediocre looking chicken. I ordered for delivery, took a little over an hour which is OK. I got the chicken schwarma sandwich and some hummus on the side. Not only was there a 2 inch black hair in my sandwich, I couldn't even eat the hummus that came on the side because the taste was just not good. This time bringing me my order took 1.5 hours after promising 30 minutes. Then when the food got here it was wrong. I called the restaurant, but while they acknowledged that they had my order correct there and that the food that I got did not match what I ordered they were unwilling to do anything about it. While the food is still good, and so is the service when eating in, I have to lower my opinion of this place due to their terrible delivery service. If you're going to offer delivery, do it right. The past two times ordering delivery have each been 1+ hours during non peak times, and this last time we reached 1.5 hours before I cancelled the order because I was tired of waiting. Staff was not helpful when we called asking for an update either, seemingly having no clue what the status of the driver was (saying delivery time would be between another 15 minutes and another hour, after we'd already been waiting for over an hour). Delivered food tends to arrive cold as well. Place is still worth it for dining in, but avoid getting delivery from here. read more

I came here many ramadans ago to break fast and swore to myself I would never be back, but alas I returned. I had a groupon and I was in the mood for some middle eastern grub. I got my $15 meal for $10 so that's a plus. I ordered a combo feast and baba ghannoush with a pop. I got it to go by the time I got home my food was warm and I don't live far 5 miles tops. The so called shwarma is not at all shwarma. It's chicken chunks shwarma should look like gyro meat. The lefts was a bit dry, the falafel was mediocre at best. The most tasty meat to be found on my plate was the beef steak type thing. It was yummy, moist, and flavorful!! The hummus had a sweet flavor which I found strange. The baba ghannoush is fire tho. Omg delicious and I don't usually like the stuff. Oh yea the veggies on my plate were way overcooked and extremely mushy. The rice lacked flavor. I don't think I will be back for real this time. I'll stick to my spot on Roosevelt even though it's further it's much tastier. read more

We split the chicken shawarma and yes the portion was large bur te chicken was way over cooked and dry. We were confused by the "free French fries" aspect, ironically the fries were the best tasting thing we ordered (you have to ask for the free fries, they won't just give them to you).
