I can't recommend Visual Effects Optometry enough! From the moment you walk in, the experience is…read moretop-notch. The staff (Diana, Daisy and Michael) are consistently wonderful- they're always professional, welcoming, and efficient, which makes the check-in process a breeze. Overall this place is fantastic- you can tell the entire team truly cares about their patients. As for Dr. Nguyen she is simply amazing. She takes the time to be thorough, answers every questions, and provides expert care with a personal touch. We've been going to them for 7 years now and we couldn't be happier.

I first came to Visual Effects Optometry about eight years ago to get my first set of prescription…read moreeyeglasses before I was about to lose my vision insurance. I saw Dr. Dang back then and got the standard set of eye tests, and he found the parameters for my prescription. They have a large selection of frames, and I ended up with a nice pair of Oakleys that I still have to this day. Since I no longer have vision insurance, I have gotten new lenses a few times over the years from Costco. Since I got the frames here, I stop by once every few years when something doesn't feel right, or if the nose pads seem worn. Diane always seems to be at the front desk, and amazingly remembers me every time I walk in the door even though it is pretty infrequent. She is always so friendly and helpful, and adjusts my frames perfectly every time. I really should get a quote for new lenses from them next time, maybe it is not that much of a difference even without insurance. Dr. Dang was great, and Diane is the best. I would recommend Visual Effects Optometry.

Horrible experience. 0/10 would not recommend. My review is solely for Dr. Lisa Matsui who showed…read moreunprofessional behavior during my daughter's eye test appointment. The office assistant escorted us to get the eye images and screening questions done. When asked about current medications, I replied that we only administer Advil or Motrin for fevers and pain, and she didn't ask any follow-up questions. Instead, she led us back to the exam room to wait for the doctor. As soon as we entered the room, my daughter dropped her belongings and dove into playing with her slime. The doctor walked in just as my daughter was reaching for tissues to wipe off excess hand sanitizer. The doctor's expression was puzzling - I couldn't tell if it was her natural demeanor or a look of distaste. "Oh, I heard your daughter is sick," she said, and I confirmed, "Yes, she was, last week". Given her medical expertise and credentials I expected more in-depth questioning. Instead, it seemed like she relied on assumptions rather than gathering thorough information about my daughter's medical history. It was surprising that she didn't take the opportunity to ask more questions and gather useful insights before or during our visit. She just looked at my daughter and told her "yeah, you look miserable" I was taken aback when the doctor said those exact words to my 12-year-old daughter. Her choice of words was not only unprofessional but also potentially damaging to a young and impressionable mind. It made me wonder how healthcare professionals in this office speak about patients when they're not within earshot. So I questioned her "what?? miserable? how can you tell her that. You have poor choice of words". And she said "well she doesn't look very well" and tried to rephrase it in other ways and started giving me the definition of miserable. I was appalled when the doctor offered to see my daughter another day. Why would I subject my child to a healthcare "professional" who lacks empathy and basic diagnostic skills? The doctor's failure to ask fundamental questions about allergies, medical history, and symptoms was staggering. Instead, she made assumptions based on a single observation - my daughter grabbing tissues. Her incompetence was alarming, and I wouldn't trust her to provide adequate care for my daughter or anyone in my family. Now I wonder, if other people knew, would they trust her to treat and diagnose their vision? Witnessing a healthcare professional in a white coat behave so unprofessionally was extremely upsetting. What's worse, instead of apologizing directly to my daughter for her hurtful comment, the doctor downplayed the situation by offering a casual invitation to return another time. Her lack of accountability and empathy was appalling, and ignoring my daughter's feelings only added to the harm. A simple acknowledgment and apology would have gone a long way in resolving the issue. Instead, her indifference compelled me to share our distressing experience, serving as a cautionary tale about the importance of empathy in healthcare. After declining her services, I walked out of the office. As I was walking to my car, I realized I needed to return for a doctor's note for my daughter's school. When I went back, it was clear that the doctor was gossiping with the front desk staff about our encounter. 5-7 people huddled in the front desk, like Jesus! you couldn't wait until I left the parking lot at least? The unprofessionalism was staggering - but not surprising; instead of reflecting on her behavior, she was sharing our personal business with others. So much for privacy rights.

Just went for my yearly eye exam for exam & new glasses. In a world where customer service and…read moreprofessional expertise will get you a belly laugh, its awful nice to know that some offices don't change OR get better. Believe this was my 25th year with Dr. Laurie Stern and Company and the Doctor is still outstanding and the staff professional, courteous and willing to help as much as possible. They STILL get you in fast per your appointment, the doctor listens when you tell her what works and the staff follow-up is phenomenal. It's always this good... Great people! Dan

I've been a patient for over 10 years, but today's interaction seriously made me reconsider…read morecontinuing care at this office. The office manager was openly rude, dismissive, and shockingly uninformed. When my usual contact lens brand (Acuvue Moist) was unavailable, I was given a different brand (BioTrue). I asked a very basic question: what is the difference between these two lenses? Her only response, repeated multiple times, was "the price." That answer isn't just incorrect, it's illogical. A significant price difference exists because there are differences in materials, moisture retention, comfort, and wear. When pressed, she said she "doesn't wear contacts" and therefore couldn't explain, an odd excuse for someone managing an optometry office. You do not need to personally use a product to understand or explain it. By that logic, no medical professional could explain medications they don't personally take. She made no effort to look up the information, ask another staff member below her, or provide any meaningful help. Instead, she was condescending and dismissive throughout the entire interaction. The trial lenses were uncomfortable, immediately dried my eyes, and caused blurry vision confirming that there are, in fact, differences she refused to acknowledge. Even after I told her how they immediately felt, she just would repeat the same phrase of "I don't wear contacts so I wouldn't know" and smile condescendingly. Aly has consistently been the only professional, knowledgeable, and helpful employee I've worked with over the years, and my decision about whether to continue care here will depend entirely on whether future visits can be handled through her without further interaction like this. Poor office leadership and an unwillingness to assist patients reflect badly on the entire practice. If your eyes dry out or blur with a given brand, that's a legitimate, physiological response, not something that can be dismissed as "just price." Professional staff should be able to explain these differences or check with another colleague rather than giving a non-answer.
