Jazmine Cafe will always have a special place in my heart. It was one of the first, if not the first, Vietnamese restaurant in the Uptown area before Vietnamese restaurants began to boom throughout New Orleans. Jazmine Cafe has been introducing Vietnamese cuisine to the area in their own way and style. Being here for at least 15 years, Jazmine Cafe continues to serve delicious food with their extensive menu and unique spring rolls. Even during throughout COVID-19, they were battle tested to make sure their customers were well fed and happy! Service is usually great and the staff is very friendly. From pho, spring rolls, and to even poke bowls, you will always find something to satisfy your cravings. You can always count on Jazmine to give you delicious, filling Vietnamese food!

I was pleasantly surprised by the food and service that I enjoyed at Jazmine Cafe this week. I've walked and driven past this restaurant time and time again, but never really gave it a second thought. I haven't heard anyone talk about it - good or bad - so it wasn't ever really on my radar. With a location like it has right smack dab in the heart of the beautiful riverbend area, it's just weird that no one has ever brought it up. Well, I was nearby so I walked over and gave it a try. Upon arrival I was greeted warmly and seated. Menus were dropped off and my drink order was taken. They serve all of the basic Vietnamese dishes you're used to seeing. I ordered grilled pork vermicelli and after a brief wait it was delivered to me. The portion was generous and the flavor was excellent. The pork was sweet and lean too. It was obvious to me that this place hasn't received a facelift in a while, and some updating would make a big difference. Appearance aside, the food was very good and the service was too.

I was very disappointed in their Vietnamese iced coffee (cafe sua da) and Thai tea since they lacked in flavor and was watery. Their pho tasted okay and their fish spring rolls were pretty good. The service was very slow as well.

FOOD WAS DOWNRIGHT SCRUMPTIOUS!!!! VERY GOOD FOOD. Service is very fast. Like super fast. I wish the ambience was nicer. Bubble tea is good but does melt very fast. Not the most authentic but still very good. Liked the music in the background. A straight up feast

    Jazmine's fabulous aquarium.

Pleasantly surprised! The food was very good, ample portions and good price. Service was attentive. Staring at their aquarium is worth a visit in itself; it's the nicest I've ever seen in a business.

This is my favorite place to eat I could go here at anytime. Their food is the best for me One of my favorite plates is their poke bowl. The combination and different types of flavor in just one plate is like fireworks in my mouth. I simply love this place

Was pleasantly surprised by this place on carrolton. My friend who is a regular here always gets the poke bowls and swears by them. They definitely look super appetizing! I tired the pork rice plate dish and was impressed by the portion size and the meat quality, although the meat was a bit over salted. Reasonably priced, and offers lots of options! The ambiance inside was comfortable and casual. Will probably come back and try one of those poke bowls.

I ate here a lot as a Tulane student because they took nolabucks, but that was pretty much the only reason. The food is ok; nothing more, nothing less. If you're craving Vietnamese food, it does the job. I've gotten their curry chicken, sweet heat noodle, grilled pork/summer roll/grilled chicken vermicelli, grilled shrimp/pan fried tilapia rice, spicy lemongrass noodles, and mushroom glass noodles. Of these, I would recommend the vermicelli noodles; everything else has been hit or miss. Also, not sure if they still offer it but I've also gotten hot pot here and it was not great.

I have heard mixed reviews about this place so why not give it a shot. They have added poke bowls to their menu so when a coworker and I stopped in for lunch we both decided to try one. This place looks much bigger from the outside. Service was pretty slow during lunch...hence the 4 stars and not 5. I ordered the ultimate poke bowl which pretty damn fantastic. It comes with fresh salmon, tuna, spicy tuna and a whole assortment of goodies. I actually just had it again today for lunch...fyi...it was just as great as take out.

Sweet heat noodles. And stuffed crepes on a Sunday night. This was my very first restaurant on my very first night in NOLA. ...and I hit it TWICE in four days. Just sayin.' My gluten-free babe and I had planned a four day eating tour of the Big Easy... but that was before we got here. (See my review of HJ Airport in Atlanta, just to set the mood for what I felt like by the time we got to NOLA.) Never mind that some sinus dreck made for an excruciatingly painful landing, and I wasn't feeling at all civil. A few hours walking around, a ride on the St. Charles Streetcar, and some deep breathing later, and I was hungry. But wait! We were uptown, well away from "the" restaurants! Sometimes life hands you a gift, and it's up to you whether or not to open the wrapper. That's what we felt like when we wandered into Jazmine Cafe, after a string of no. Nah. Not there. Uh-uh. No, I don't like the looks of that place. Nope. (According to my sweetie, that's what I'd been saying as we walked down Carrollton.) We started with some Sapporo (I know, Japanese beer at a Vietnamese restaurant...), but it hit the spot. Next came the house soup, which was glass noodles, shredded lettuce, onions, cilantro, in chicken broth. Very tasty if not a bit thin, but it really helped to start clearing out the pressure in my ear. AND it was tasty. And hot. And salty. But not too salty. And crunchy. Yes... My sweetheart got the Banh Xeo, a rice crepe stuffed with pork, shrimp, beansprouts and onions, along with some romaine lettuce, cilantro, and pickled carrots. I opted for the Pho Xao, their "Sweet Heat Noodle" that came with shrimp, chicken, beansprouts, onions, cilantro and coarsely-chopped peanuts over vermicelli noodles. WOW. Sweet. With just the mildest after-burn. I really, really enjoyed the flavors of this one! I probably can't say enough good things about this restaurant. Let's just say that two nights later, we came back... and we each had precisely the same orders. It was THAT good.

I had been to New Orleans since 1987 to attend JazzFest until my near death and rebirth in 1999…read morewith Celiac disease about 6-7 times. After I was diagnosed with Gluten Intolerance as a foodie I thought my culinary life was over and one of the many, but not only joys, of going to Nola is the food. I was reluctant to go and then a bit later 20 years ago Katrina hit this great city. When I did return my reluctance of going due to my food restrictions was born out, but the fact that the people in New Orleans fry everything, including water. Besides jambalaya and some fresh fish, I couldn't eat anything. However, due to a friend who was born in New Orleans, grew up in New Orleans and lives half of the year there with her family involved in the restaurant business, Pat introduced me for a number of chefs and one in particular, Michael Gulotta, who modified dishes or even made me specially dishes that were gluten free. Every time I went to New Orleans, I tried to go to his two Vietnamese Cajun restaurants, MoPho and Maypop. Michael Gulotta, chef-owner at Mopho and Maypop was born and raised in New Orleans. Michael began cooking in local restaurants at a young age. After graduating from the Chef John Folse Culinary Institute, he joined the newly opened Restaurant August. Gulotta then took leave to train in the Italian Riviera and Germany's Black Forest. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Michael returned home to help rebuild and assist with August's re-opening. He was named chef de cuisine in 2007 and led the award-winning kitchen for six years, while establishing relationships with local farmers and purveyors. He opened his first restaurant, MOPHO, in January of 2014 with his brother, Jeffrey Gulotta, and high-school friend, Jeffrey Bybee. Located in New Orleans' Mid City, MOPHO was a true neighborhood restaurant and a destination for Southeast Asian inspired cuisine utilizing the Louisiana pantry. In its first year MOPHO was nominated for America's Best New Restaurant by Bon Appétit magazine and named Restaurant of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2016 Michael was named one of Top 30 Chefs to Watch in the nation by Plate Magazine, A New Orleans Rising Star by Starchefs, a Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine, and Chef of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. In 2017, his team opened its second full-service restaurant, Maypop, in the Central Business District of New Orleans. Maypop was named a Top 5 Best New Restaurant by The Times Picayune, A Best New Restaurant by New Orleans Magazine, a New Orleans Top 20 Restaurants by Condé Nast Traveler, and a New Orleans' Top Ten Restaurants for 2019, by Brett Anderson. Michael has also been a semifinalist for The James Beard Awards Best Chef South for the past four years. Most recently, his team opened a second MOPHO location in the new Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. On my trip to New Orleans this past May, I was saddened to learn that Michael was closing MoPho and Maypop, casualties of the so difficult business of owning a restaurant I know all too well. After JazzFest one evening on MoPho's second to last day, Pat and I went to pay our respects and I got to thank Michael for his kindness showing me there was culinary life after my diagnosis not only at his restaurant but when he catered the main stage at JazzFest, but he also introduced me to more fusion possibilities which I have incorporated in some of the food I make. On the last day of Maypop, my brother Jeff and I dined at Maypop, Michael's more upscale joint which served delicious food and not to be undone, after both closed on that Sunday in May, I saw the MoPho at the airport right in front of my terminal to fly home and I got the greatest wings on the planet to fly home with: CRISPY CHICKEN WINGS WITH NUOC MAM CARAMEL. I have no idea what exactly that is except Cajun chicken spices with a Vietnamese caramel sauce that is unparalleled in it's flavor, bite and marriage of cultures that was so good Pat would always ask for more on the side. I'm sure Michael will get back in the game at some point but I write this with gratitude to Pat for introducing me to this great Chef and to Chef Gulotta for taking the time to show me what I could eat and what modifications he could make to his food for me.

Coming to the restaurant, you do have to time it right, as it closes at 7 which makes it not an option if you want a later dinner. Lunch or early dinner it is. The system here is counter service, then take a number and a tray and seat yourself. Food comes out pretty quickly, there were few other customers there at the time when I went in the early evening, and my appetizer came out within a few minutes, and my pho came out within ten minutes. I had a half order of the spring rolls with shrimp and pork, and a beef combo pho. The spring rolls were wrapped very well, with great structural integrity that made them easy to eat and dip. However, the pork was really dry and tough, and the only reason it didn't ruin the texture of the whole thing is because the pork slices were quite thin. The shrimp was fresh but also sliced quite thin to the point where it was almost not even noticeable. The wrapper was quite thick and felt like it had been left out for a while, so it was quite dry. The pho was good, but the meats were overall quite chewy and tough, and there was significantly less meat than I would expect for an extra large order. They also were pretty stingy with the herbs. I am used to there being a fair amount of onion, scallion, and cilantro in pho, and here it was like they finger-pinched the herbs in rather than grabbing a handful. Overall, it was not bad, but it was underwhelming, and I have had many better Vietnamese meals elsewhere.
