Tucked in a little corner of the parking lot near the Holiday Inn Express, Java Joe's looks like a rusted trove of hippie Americana. You will most likely meet Joe himself as he's a real friendly dude and was kind enough to provide my friends and I directions to several of the UP's best attractions. I think because of his friendly nature, you're going to experience a trade-off of slow service. We waited nearly an hour before we got our food. That being said, if you're in a hurry, don't eat here. I'm serious; we nearly missed out on seeing bears at the Oswald Ranch because of time delays. With that disadvantage out of the way, I can tell you that the menu selection is unprecedented. I have eaten all over the world and never once ordered a plain bagel with avacado, onion, and tomato on top. It was delicious. There is a plethora of omelets, pancakes, waffles, and pretty much any other breakfast you can think of. Slow service aside, the style and personality of Joe's Java Cafe is a rare find that you may want to take advantage of before celebrating hippie culture is outlawed. read more

For a small town coffee shop, it's not too bad. Very casual and friendly staff. Coffee was good. Food was good too. I think maybe being only coffee shop anywhere around and right next to hotels they probably get overly crowded and that may lose some of its charm but on a good day probably worth 3-4 stars at best but today giving them the latter. read more

This was our second or third visit and our memory of a positive experience was correct! Covid safety was apparent, lots of little things were done right to insure our safety. A 5-10 minute wait, then our waitress took our order quickly and kept the coffee coming. The entire staff was great and working together. Joe visited us and is such a great communicator, a fun conversation. Our food came quickly and after one small correction, we were very happy with our selections. (omelette and blueberry pancakes). Great little spot for breakfast or brunch and we will be back. We've heard positive things about Joe's other two restaurants and we will certainly try these too. Service was a little slow, but that was because the place was packed. While we were waiting for our food, the wait staff came by several times to refill our coffee and check on is. Even Joe stopped by to see if we needed anything. I love the atmosphere - a huge teepot collection crammed into a hippy's beach shack. The denver omelette with toast and hashbrowns was tasty- my husband said it was perfect, actually. We also ordered banana french toast that was filled with cream cheese and covered with pecans, whipped cream and carmel sauce. It was obscenely decadent and impossible to finish (but way worth trying!). I highly recommend it - just be sure to split it with someone. Definately stop here if you go through Saint Ignes. Interesting spot with a unique vibe and great food. Went of a Saturday morning and it was packed. We had a larger group so we naturally had to wait a little while for a table, but it was well worth it. I ordered the Turkey and Spinach omelet with a side of hash browns. I can't give this place five stars for one simple reason. Well, if you include all the bees buzzing around the patio, it would be two reasons. The ordering process is very unorganized, and for newcomers it's confusing/offputting as hell. When you arrive at Java Joe's you should let the person at the front counter know that you are here and where you are planning to sit so that someone will come and wait on you. Once we figured that out the food was superb! My husband had the bacon and cheese omelet with hash browns and I had the granola Joe's pancake with eggs and hash browns. This menu is massive! It would be extremely difficult not to find something you would want to eat on this menu for any meal of the day. Everything sounds delicious and I'm sure it is worth the wait. We rolled in at about 8:30 on a Sunday morning and seems to have come at just the right time to beat the rush. From what I'm hearing the wait times for your meal can get rather long once they get busy. With the disorganized ordering process I'm sure that only adds to the wait time. The two waitresses on staff- bless their hearts -were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, but somehow managed to keep every order correct and to the right tables. Having worked in the industry, I don't know how they do it without any table numbers or clear table assignment system. Two tables on the patio with us at separate instances had to ask for service because they didn't know how to get it in the first place. Just here in St. Ignace for 4 days and this place has easily become a favorite. Staff is efficient and friendly and the guy Java Joes is named after works here as well and he's full of life and very kind. Their menu is HUGE so you're bound to find SOMETHING you like. I like their traditional breakfast at $6.99 with hash browns, bacon, and sunny side up eggs. But they can make the eggs any way you like and replace the bacon with sausage. It's a great place! The place is really cool and the idea is really awesome but the service was horrible and the food was a let down.My wife,son and I were greeted by a lady that seamed really nice so it was really promising at first,we were sat at our table in the back on the deck and forgotten about until my wife flagged down a waitress after 20-25mins of waiting just to give them our drink order.After finally get drinks we waited another 20mins until we had to again flag down a waitress, to giver her our food order.We revived our food and the eggs were runny and the sausage gravy was really thin and had no "sausage"! The hash browns were under cooked and had zero flavor,the sausage patty was nothing more then a cheap Gordon's frozen patty warmed up in a microwave and was Luke warm by the time our food finally got to the table. We ordered pancakes,fruit bowl,some coffee,sausage gravy,waffles and a meal for me that had 2 runny eggs,toast with no butter ( at this point I wasn't going to waste more time asking for butter) a microwave sausage patty and under cooked hash browns. Total for this shit show of an experience:$70 bucks without tip!! Drive past and find another place to eat! My husband's nutella crepe was absolutely decadent as well as our nut caramel coffee and the hot chocolate with whipped cream my daughter got. The decor is pretty special, and almost all of little knick knacks that you see there for sale Only downside was the young waiter left us a bit longer waiting for the check and for cutlery. She said it was just coming up- went into the kitchen, and came out with our plates, lukewarm food at best, my partners eggs were full cold. The food quality was low grade- poor quality. That hormel precooked bacon you can buy at Sam's Club that requires no refrigeration and tastes/feels like cardstock paper? I really think that is what they serve. I'd say we come for the breakfast but keep coming back for the staff. Joe is such a kind and caring man. We had eaten there first thing in the morning, and then as we were getting ready to leave our hotel, my husband was trying to find an ATM before leaving St. Ignace, and Joe gave him directions to the bank down the street. If you get there, and there's a wait, you're willing to wait bc they make you feel like they know you when you sit down. On our way out of town, I stopped in to get coffee to go, and even though we'd been there 3 hours before, Joe's wife who had been our server remembered me and my daughter (who was waiting in the car!). I have never gotten a bad pancake there. The most recent visit was Banana Pecan. Perfect last day of vacation meal, we were so full for the ride home, we'll be back next summer. read more
