It's hard to go wrong with any fish you pick. And, at only $7.99/pound, you won't pay much, either.

Before you walk in the door, you can smell the smoke filling the air. This isn't an acrid aroma of something burning, but rather the magical aroma of applewood and other woods that contribute to the flavor of the final product. Forget Axe body spray: THIS is what I want to smell like every day. Before I talk about the smoked whitefish, I have to mention that they have thick hunters sausage that's tasty (though not too spicy) for $1 a stick. Now, about that smoked fish. You pay by weight at $7.99 a fish. This is a terrific bargain (see the picture I attached showing the yield: what you get is mostly meat). You do have to understand that there are a lot of bones to work around. It doesn't take long to get all the good stuff, but you've bee warned. And that flavor: wow! If you're someone who likes a squeeze of lemon on your fish, or a barbarian who uses tartar sauce, please consider the unspoiled beauty of the smoke flavor in the fish. The flesh near the skin has a more intense flavor, but every inch of it is something to be savored. I'm seriously bummed that they didn't have any fish sausage when I stopped in, but the quality and value of what they did have was so good that I will certainly plan on a return visit every time I'm in town.

Delicious! We decided to stop in after seeing the reviews. We bought a smoked whitefish and the smoked whitefish dip. We brought it back to our camper for a feast. We found the whitefish easier to debone than expected. Mr. Manley told us to just crack it open and dive in. Just watch for the bones. Messy hand job but worth the effort. The dip is amazing and I'm glad we bought two. Make the trip a bit north beyond the busy downtown area.

This place is a blast of culture. After seeing lots of good reviews and a little shack aesthetic, I knew this had to be somewhere we check out. Boy was I not let down. Tucked right on the main strip in St. Ignace across the street from all the hotels on the water, this spot is authentically an oddball of the area. The green and yellow paint job give off a tropical / Jamaican vibe and delicious the tiny footprint of the shop is further dwarfed by the massive chain business surrounding in this tourist haven. Inside there's not much to be but a few clear and simple choices. Smoked fish (white and trout), smoked fish dip, beef jerky, beef sticks, Sleeves of crackers and some "pop" options. I loved that you could choose from 3 options for sleeves of crackers. They had the classic round "Ritz" style, the long rectangle "Tollhouse" style, or the basic saltines. Grab a sleeve with your dip and you're ready to snack, I love this!! The fish dip was excellent. A full blast of the smoked fish flavor but with cheese and some nice herbs. I bought two tubs and wish I would have got more!! The beef jerky is the best I've ever had. The dude running the shop stores money in old old coffee cans and wraps up whatever you like, deli style. This beef jerky clearly had oil on the plastic wrapping around it, which I've never seen before so I was unsure. My god is this stuff good. Slightly sweet, nice and smoky, and just the perfect chewy, tender texture. Try it!! The smoked fish we still have, I got the trout since we got the smoked whitefish dip, and will be making a Caesar salad with it tonight! This stuff packs a serious punch of flavor. It's unreal. Overall the service here was fine. The dude was no nonsense but polite and the interior is... nothing that would win interior design awards, but it's definitely.... real. Anyone looking to try something new in the UP or get some really good smoked meat, I would highly recommend Manley's.

Ramshackle block buildings with faded green paint. Describing the proprietor as curmudgeonly is a bit far but don't expect service with a smile. Do expect the very best smoked fish and smoked whitefish dip you will find in the area.

I heard about this place and read the reviews. I wanted to take some smoked fish home so since we were passing through nearby I decided to stop in. I walked in and I was greeted by the friendly smiling Don Wright who was behind the counter. I asked him for his suggestion as to what was the best to take home and he suggested the Menominee and the White Fish. So I said wrap up two of each. It was less than $20 and I was a happy camper. He is a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and has signs and memorabilia all around. I told him I just happened to also be a fan and we shared some great stories. He also had an old friend visiting him. Can't wait to get home to eat them.

The fish breading was sort of wet/under cooked so much that it sort of slid off the fish. There was nothing crispy about it. It looks good but it's almost as if it's steamed or boiled instead of fried. Sadly, we didn't finish it, what a waste! We feel bad for wasting food and wasting money but we just couldn't do it. My daughter who is crazy obsessed with fish refused to eat it after 1 bite. The chicken strips were not house made but they were very crispy and delicious. The fries are fresh cut, crispy and excellent! They do have grilled sandwiches on the menu so I'm assuming that is actually the best thing to order there. I might consider coming back for a sandwich and fries but not the fish! The staff was very friendly! The store and bathroom were very clean and welcoming. They have a huge collection of vintage boat motors and taxidermy. Stop by for a soda, premade snacks and some french fries.

Piled it on bread the next day and was very happy. Smoked whitefish chowder was homemade with love and care and I would drink this by the gallon. Whitefish and walleye baskets were to die for. And the whitefish sandwich was as amazing as you'd expect. Bonus: the fries that came with the sandwich and baskets were also utterly delicious. Cannot say enough good things about this place. I will definitely make this a regular stop coming in and out of the UP and plan better so that I can take more home from here next time. Big thanks to the wonderful staff for their hospitality and pride in their food.

We didn't have reservations, so picked up a buzzer from the hostess and joined the crowd waiting in the gift shop or lounging around at the entrance. Our wait was about a half hour, and we were seated in a rear dining room that should receive a Gold Medal for Eclectic Design. Our table was covered in laminated Detroit Tiger baseball cards, and the walls were plastered with beer company paraphernalia and Detroit sports memorabilia. Our server Aimy brought our meal -a Cheeseburger Platter ($11.99), and for me a cup of Clam Chowder ($4.49) and Shrimp Steamers ($14.99). My meal was excellent, the chowder was served piping hot and was loaded with chopped clams and potatoes. And man, oh man, were the shrimps great. They were a half pound served shell-on "Caribbean style" with lemon and cocktail sauce. Yes, they were messy to eat but were so worth the mess. Aimy helped me out with a few wet naps. You might have to spit out a pin bone or two as you work your way through your perfectly fried fish fillet. I even spit out a pin bone enjoying the delicious clam chowder. I know: clams don't have bones, but they do mix in fresh fish...very fresh fish. The chowder was hearty, and good enough that I didn't mind the occasionally pin bone to remind me of how fresh it was. Now, as for the chips...these are excellent skin-on shoestring fries. Check and check: the fish and the chips are both terrific. What was less terrific was how the fish tacos were served: excellent fish on a tortilla, but floating in a sea of mediocre coleslaw. Fish swim, right? I'm exaggerating, but it felt like a 1:1 ratio of fish to coleslaw. If it didn't make the breading soggy, and if the coleslaw weren't so *blech*, it might not have mattered. It's basically just a watery mayo with shredded cabbage. Another excellent item on the menu were the hush puppies. Unlike everything else on the menu, this had some really great flavor. The fish - great as it was - needed salt. So did the fried chicken. But those hush puppies were perfect. They're served with tartar sauce, but they don't need them. Dogs are welcome, but you do have to dine outside. The pictures are dark because we dined late in the day. The weather was nice, so this was not an issue. The food was prepared fairly quickly, and the prices were reasonable. We'll be back, but we'll skip the coleslaw.
