I was in the area for a wedding on Mackinaw Island, and I was having a hard time finding a homey brunch spot. Nothing in Mackinaw City near the harbor seemed appetizing- just very touristy over there. I was ecstatic finding Java Joe's Cafe. I am already thinking about the food just writing this review. The place is bigger inside than the outside. It looks like antique shop that stood against time. Inside, it can be crowded because you can obviously tell it is a hot local spot. Fellow Yelp Elite Karen W describes this joint PERFECTLY with "eclectic flair and just a funky vibe." The extensive menu was printed like a newspaper with possibly fake news on it. It was May 22 and 39 degrees at the campsite, so we sought our hot breakfast in St Ignace. Java Joe's was open early, the owner and staff were welcoming. The menu is extensive! The omelets, frittata and blueberry pancakes were tasty. I give them 5 stars because they excelled in two things that are rarely done well in diners: the fruit bowl was generously portioned and truly fresh, and the tea was quite hot and served in a teapot and antique tea cup. Certainly a step above the Holiday Inn breakfast, but just a step in that they fill your mug with coffee and cook your food and bring it to you. The farmers omelette had so very few thin pieces of ham that it surprised me and so it was with the remaining ingredients. What has happened to Java joes???? I've been going here a couple of times a year for over 20 years, and for the first time, it was horrible. Is there a new owner? Did everyone quit? I didn't see any of the same faces that have been there forever, my waitress mumbled, my companion told her three times "Mexican grilled cheese" and finally had to show her on the menu. I had an omelet (if I had to count, I'm sure I've ordered close to 20 omelets here in my life) it was dark brown on both sides. Like they cooked the omelet, pressed it down, flipped it, and pressed it down again. My hash browns were chewy... how do you even make chewy hash browns? Had they been sitting on the grill for a while and brought back up to temperature? This is not java joes I have come to love and have recommended to anyone I talk to crossing the bridge. Loved this place so much! It is the most unique and homey out of all the places I have tried in St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. They have a quality cup of coffee with options for lattes and other craft drinks. Their menus are newspaper, which was so much fun and interesting to read while we waited. I read many great reviews about this place. I loved the decor and really liked the chocolate chip coconut pancakes as well as the avocado omelet my wife ordered. However, I ordered the whitefish eggs Benedict and I had major issues with it. There were literally 2-3 tiny pieces of whitefish and some sprinkles of tomato on top of the sauce. I have never seen this amount of topping in an eggs Benedict. I have had eggs Benedict from different restaurants probably 100 times and there is always a respectable amount of meat or vegetable between the bread and egg. Here, there was nothing. Just the sprinkle or fish and tomato on top of the sauce... The second issue I had was the service. It was just 2 of us and I have never waited this long to be served breakfast. I didn't get to eat here because I have a trained and certified therapy dog, and although we went in and got approval to sit on the patio with him (even though I shouldn't have to get approval because of ADA requirements) there was another dog on the patio that barked and went nuts when it saw my dog. So, the owner yelled at us and made us leave even though my dog had no reaction to the untrained dog. Maybe they have good food, but I'll never know. read more

We were in St. Ignace for 2 nights while visiting Mackinac Island and we ate here 3 times! The menu is great and so is the food and the service. We came for breakfast twice and while we all liked our savory breakfast the first time (including corned beef omelets) we really liked our sweet breakfast when we ordered pancakes such as Hawaiian, crunchy coconut, almond joy and chocolate banana. They coffee is also really good and available for purchase (which I did). For dinner we all went with the mac & cheese (lobster, chicken and broccoli, etc.) that came with garlic bread. We visited Java Joe's after finding a menu in our nearby hotel. We were seated quickly. Our waitress had some difficulty understanding us, but our food arrived as ordered. I have never had bacon as thin as what I was served. I laid a slice of it down on top of the menu and could read text through what I can only call "bacon lace" . The Eggs Benedict was okay. The English Muffin was not toasted, the Hollandaise was bland and the eggs were hard. We were never offered refills. My husband picked up a mug for his office collection ($7,95), but was perplexed when our bill was $48 and some change. Once back at the hotel, I looked at the menu, but was unable to get the same total. I called and a nice lady said to come back the next business day and ask for Sandy. We did. What we discovered was that the menu in the motel was old, and they had found it necessary to raise prices. I totally understand price increases, but we were also charged the wrong price for the mug. I'll give 2 stars as we showed up w a party of 4 adults and 3 kids at 11:30 on a Sunday. Other than that, it was horrid. We didn't get coffee refills when the rest of the room did. When we asked, they said they were out and had to make more. (The coffee was great though) It took over an hour to get our food which was standard breakfast - eggs, omelettes, and pancakes. The omelettes and eggs were the most over cooked I've ever seen. They were so browned I thought they were pancakes. The scrambled were essentially poured in a skillet and left to cook, so they were too tough to feed to the kids. The pancakes were undercooked and raw in the middle. The table had a hanging lamp on the brightest setting which made it even hotter in there. I ordered French toast and bacon. The French toast was mediocre. The middle was soggy. The bacon is obviously the microwaveable bacon from a box. I had asked for my bacon to be extra crispy but it was flimsy and chewy. I was not impressed with this place at all.
