Happened upon Java Bean Cafe when we were randomly in the area to pick up a belt bag that my wife had found on Facebook and I was very happy we did. The space is very bright with gold and color everywhere on a bright little corner in Claymont and has good parking in front and around back. But what is really exciting is that when you step through the door and walk to the counter, you see how interesting the menu on offer really is. I had every intention of having a breakfast sandwich or bagel, but once I saw the whole menu and saw that I could order a noodle bowl for breakfast, the game had changed. I also ordered a delicious cappuccino which was extremely hot, almost too hot, but was very espresso forward and perfect for the morning. However, the two bagels we ordered, one for my wife and one for my youngest daughter, despite being delicious, had barely any cream cheese on them at all. The noodle bowl and rice bowl that we got were also tasty but there was nothing exceptional about them or to make them stand out other than my initial excitement that I could order noodles for breakfast. Everything was made by hand and done right then and there and fairly quickly and everything was very fresh as well as everyone that we interacted with being very helpful and upbeat when we ordered. I even asked about getting one of their very fun shirts they have available. If you happen to be passing on 495, a quick two minute drive off the exit will get you here and it's worth it rather than heading to some chain. I was so thrilled to find this gem of a cafe! The food is delicious, and the staff is ever so friendly. Our favorites- the Kali club, breakfast burrito, and the wrapping tofu. They have a huge drink menu- it would take you years to try every one of them! The sitting area is quaint and charming. Overall feeling of the cafe is very warm and welcoming. Stopped in for a quick bite and a coffee the other morning. The staff is so sweet :) I ordered a caramel macchiato and a croissant breakfast sandwich with bacon. I love the interior of the place it was super cozy and welcoming. My caramel macchiato was good but I needed to add sugar. The star was my sandwich. Omg flaky croissant, piled up with bacon, egg and cheese? Yummm. I enjoyed every bite of it. Next time I would like to try one of the signature lattes and hang out when I'm not in a rush. We made a quick pit stop off the highway for breakfast. We were looking for something somewhat quick but not fast food. Java Bean Cafe fit the bill perfectly! Our order was taken by one of the owners who clearly takes pride in the business. We felt welcomed the minute we walked in. Our breakfast was quite delicious and obviously fresh made. My husband got French toast with scrambled eggs and sausage. I ordered the "classic"; egg sandwich with cheese, hashbrown, garlic aioli, pickled veg and choice of protein. This was the first stop on a coffee tour me and some friends organized. We chose this place to start with because the food menu was very vast and unique. We all got food and a drink and everything was delicious. We loved the Em-mi (as is), breakfast burrito with the honey lime chicken and the classic with avocado. But honestly everything on the menu looked absolutely scrum. Will be back when we have more time to play the boardgames in shop. Cute place, I ordered a lavender honey iced mate with oat milk and a Korean Sammy sandwich it was pretty good. I'm yet to try the lunch options but they all look delicious. Service was fast and nice, the chairs aren't comfortable though but seems quiet if you want a place to chill. Can't tell you anything but my experience. 9 AM, Walked in, never greeted or told "be with you in a few minutes". Instead one person was making a smoothie, another making a sandwich. Smoothie person had no problem speaking to a door dasher that came in 3 minutes after me. I stood at the "order here" section for 5 minutes (yes I knew the time going in and leaving ") before I left. They serve La Columbe coffee, so nothing local to Delaware. They make breakfast sandwiches typical of most bagel shops. Prices seemed reasonable from what I paid attention to ($3 for a drip coffee). They have a LOT of games and outdoor seating so that's really nice, but a shame they close at 3 PM and the inside has 3 2-person tables so can't imagine the games get much use. So yeah. Wish I could tell you more but I never got service or even a glance of recognition. Oh. And I want the only one waiting. A family was too. read more

I usually am a Starbucks girlie but there is not a convenient location to stop at on the way from my house to my mom's house, which is where I was headed on the day I tried Java Bean. I decided instead to get a Dunkin' latte for the road, but upon my first sip I realized it was a huge mistake (if you know, you know). On the way to my mom's I drove by Java Bean and thought to myself, "I bet I can get a better latte there," so I stopped. The cafe is pretty small and the tables are very close to one another, but their menu is excellent. I got an iced brown sugar shaken oatmilk espresso and it was just as good - if not smoother - than what I'd get at Starbucks. It's a shame I don't live closer to this place, because I'd be there *all the time.* Now that I know just how close it is to my mom's house, maybe I'll come up with more excuses to go visit her! read more

I wanted coffee. A quiet place to enjoy it and not Wawa Starbucks or Dunkin. I am pleased. I found this place on Google maps which is helpful. Mega clean. Plenty of parking and right off the highway. I can do gas, groceries, a coffee, my banking and go right back home. Joe, I'm guessing the proprietor here, introduced himself the moment I walked. He had a warm greeting, and told me a little snapshot about how this is an upcoming and thriving small business. I placed my order in the app/website so I didn't have to wait while the remaining folks in the building did their normal purchases with front staff. It's busy. But not so much so that there isn't a dedication to a good cup of coffee. Several regulars have their kids in the back watching cocomelon (I don't know) and coloring. It screams family in here lol. Which usually isn't my thing but it's so peaceful. I'll be listening to a podcast at this point. And they will likely have to ask me to leave once I lose track of time. Please... I have been here a few times and absolutely love that it is a local cafe with an unusual offering of fare. The avocado toast was a healthy portion and filling. The bulgogi noodle bowl was a bit salty so it did not seem sweet at all which is normally what balances it out a bit. The French press sandwich is a nice alternative to the hoagies one can purchase at a hoagie shop. The service is friendly and helpful. read more

Secret new find. Not so secret, actually , well located on Philadelphia Pike across from the Claymont Steak Shop. Very easy to get to, and parking along side and behind. This is a coffee shop with all kinds of coffee drinks, and some startlingly great teas. I had a sample of Rose Tea. Like drinking a bouquet. Pastries and other breakfasty things. I had a avocado toast bagel. Just terrific. If you need a place to meet for breakfast or a coffee during their opening hours (breakfast and lunchtime) this is a great spot. I've gotten very fond of Claymont and Bellefonte area of Wilmington, there are a lot of small places that are working hard to be their best. read more

Steak, egg, cheese and bacon tomato jam on a very fancy cafe roll. $10.75, I don't love the $10.75. I think it was a new chef/cook. I don't think they have a grill. 20+ minute wait wasn't great. WOW.....just wow! We stopped by Java Bean Cafe on our way into Philly and had the absolute best experience. It's the kind of place that makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. My sister had the croffle press and I had the bulgogi rice bowl. Both were delicious!! We especially loved the fluffy, flaky texture of the croffle. We also tried their coffee (amazing) and some pastries. HIGHLY recommend the almond croissant and the blueberry tart! The best part, however, was getting to talk with the owner and staff. It's clear that they have all poured their heart and soul into making this cafe a place for the community to gather and for memories to be made. Some friends told me about this place that how great it was. I have driven by this cafe for a couple years until today I stop in to check it out. Well to my surprise I was a little upset with myself for not going there when my friends told me to. As I first walked in I notice how clean and calm this cafe was, When I walked up to the counter and told this fine pleasant gentlemen that this was my first time here I was impressed how helpful and the time he took to introduce me to some products I may be interested in so I chose the egg, cheese and sausage on a brioche bun and a chocolate coffee frappe. This was so impressive also delicious I sat there and enjoyed every bite so different from Dunkin or wawa. Also as I was leaving one of the owners came up to me and carried on a conversation about the cafe history and my experience here today. Bottom line I found a new home for coffee and or breakfast. When you set your alarm to wake up earlier on a lazy summer weekend just to make sure you can start your day off with a coffee and breakfast from that spot . The drink offerings seem to be carefully curated to appeal to discerning coffee palate while being approachable for all.
