Just one of the greatest little cafes in San Francisco. The vibe in Java is wonderful. The staff is super friendly and suggestive on everything on the menu. And, trust me, anything you order from Java Beach is homemade with pride. FAR from fast food. The area of this place is super chill, and really close to the beach, which leaves a refreshing feeling when you are on your way into Java Beach Cafe. All I hear is positive things about this place, so I figured I had to check it out, The staff was extremely rude, the particular man helping me appear stoned out of his mind, and most importantly the coffee was warm? They forgot to prepare the bagel with cream cheese that I ordered. After twenty minutes of waiting, I finally built the audacity to ask where is my food to one of the ladies behind the counter. She acted like I was some bum off the beach trying to steal food, even after I showed here my receipt!! Can you believe that? I will not return. I've been here twice so far and I like it! My boyfriend and I usually get sandwiches to go and eat it at ocean beach. I like how they not only have sandwiches, but also bagels, salads and coffee. Eh. I ordered a hot chocolate because it seemed like the kind of place that would do it right. But I'm pretty sure it was just the chocolate syrup that's used to garnish drinks and steamed milk. It tasted mostly of milk and cheap milk chocolate. I added a bunch of cocoa powder and cinnamon which kinda helped. My boyfriend ordered some blackberry Irish soda bread which was very good. And I ordered the Italian chopped salad without garbanzo beans. Which came out and was quite disappointed. I paid $12.50 for romaine, and 3 tiny artichoke hearts, a few strips of meat, and pieces of cheese. Boring and bland. Totally not worth the money!! I could have gotten something better pre-made at the grocery store. read more

They are good at taking orders, not so good at handing them out. 40 min wait for a sandwich is not worth it. They should let customers know an estimated wait time when taking the order so that you don't have to waste a beautiful day waiting for your food. read more

Worst service ever. I waited 35 minutes for 2 sandwiches. I saw the girls place what looked like my sandwich on a plate, which I had a to go order. It sat on that plate for 25 minutes. Then they decide to put it in a to go box and gave it to me after they finally finished my other sandwich. Obviously they forgot about our order and I got to eat a 25-30 old HOT sandwich. The girls making sandwiches were awful especially on a busy Saturday. For this incredible land mark it was such a disappointment. 35 minutes for 2 sandwiches when one of them sat there for over 25 minutes before the other sandwich was made is pretty pathetic. It's a sandwich shop not rocket scientist. I will keep reposting so they get a low score & improve the shitty sandwich service. read more

My favorite coffee place. I live on the same block as Java Beach so I've been visiting them every day for years. Their coffee quality is the best. Bernie's blend is my favorite. It's their strongest coffee but is not dark blend, very important in my opinion. I hate taste of burned coffee, and Bernie's blend is nothing like that. You actually taste coffee. They have other bends available, and as any coffee place it has many choices of blended drinks. Be aware of their iced coffee. It's strongest thing you'll ever try, you might end up with some jitters and heart palpitations if you drink it on the empty stomach. They also have great selection of pastry, which is gone by lunch time, but don't be sad they have healthy breakfast menu, great sandwiches, hot or cold, and last but not least great salads. Place can get really busy on the sunny days in SF, and on the weekend. The line ends up somewhere in the street, but don't be sad, waiting is totally worth it. At night time you can stop for some music, glass of wine or beer, your choice. Usually older crowd is relaxing during this time, some of them even dancing. I think that anyone visiting SF should stop by Java Beach it's great coiffed, food, drinks, and it's right across the street from the Ocean Beach. P.S. They are dog friendly read more

hot cup of coffee on a cold windy day at the beach. this place is the only shop for a few blocks and its extremely warm and cozy in there. everyone sits within inches of each other working on their laptop feeding off free wifi and drinking fair trade coffee. i had to wait a while for my coffee but the friendly service and cool cup covers (able to open and close the hole to drink) made up for the wait. definitely a place to meet some nice cool people. and on a side note there was an asian couple ordering before me and they were trying to decide for a while and their english wasnt the best but the cashier was super friendly and nice to them. and when they finally ordered they got one large cup of coffee and a muffin and said to the cashier "we share everything ". how adorable read more

Java beach is a really nice place!! I have been there three times. It's relaxing to see the sunset there. Coffee is okay and sandwiches are amazing!! I like to go there and sit at the terrace enjoying the weather. That`s one of my first places that I visited in San Francisco. It`s a little bit small inside. You can connect your laptop and drink your coffee in a big sofa. Sometimes there are too many people and the crowd and it feels crowded. read more

Good location, soft and hard seating (though the couches have seen better days) friendly service, can be a little noisy with pick up orders being called out a high volume. This is our favorite coffee shop. The chai and pastries are very good, and the women at the counter are very friendly. My daughter and I go to Ocean Beach and stop in for a treat afterwards. The people who hang out here are pretty diverse and mellow and you can often listen in on an interesting conversation. If it's really crowded, people share their table with you and it is just a warm, comfy atmosphere - like you would find in a small beach town. We don't live near the beach, but come here to relax and hang out a few times a month. read more

I travel light daily on the N line which boards at the cafe. I catch the 5:40 and Java opens at 5:30-perfect timing. I was standing outside the Cafe at 5:32 when a staff person came out to dispose of cardboard. I greeted her with a Good Morning to which she replied curtly Not Yet. I know well the routine that the door is locked open and music is on. She could have said good morning or maybe a smile with the words will be open in a minute. Java Beach is like no other coffee shop. There is such a mix of people there it makes for great people watching. The food is wonderful. Try some of the hot subs, they are delicious. The coffee is excellent and you can also get a beer on tap or a glass of wine. The food is always fresh. Try the Stacy's salad for lunch or the granola bowl for breakfast. Holy crap this place was busy this past Sunday. I think I was there around 12:00pm - line out the door is right! I think I got myself a Green Tea and my roommate, uh, something, coffee related, yeah. As I waited for the delivery of our drinks at the bar-like area, I saw some old guy bump into something on the counter and in a chain reaction, ended up bumping this coffee cup. Off the counter. Onto the floor. Crack! The entire staff was perplexed as to what happened. I tried to tell them what happened, but they were preoccupied with their own ghostly versions. A girl by the scene of the crime more patiently described to them what had occurred. Still not having it. The staff kept asking each other what happened as they maneuvered around the broken ceramic pieces. The girl gave a second attempt, bless her soul, and described the old man that had bumped it , who then quietly made an exit, as though he was guilty of some crime. I really enjoyed this place. It's located right next to the beach on the corner of La Playa with a charming outdoor seating area and a cozy interior with couches and a bar. The service is great and the employees are very friendly. You can tell it's a local favorite. The sandwiches are fantastic because they are so fresh and made with the best ingredients. The pastries and muffins are good and very fresh and I really like their coffee too, it's fantastic. I kind of wish it was on my way to work so I could stop there more often, but I don't mind heading down to the beach to pick up a good cup of coffee and a nice lunch. read more

When I asked for a small coffee, they mean a small coffee. Finished it in 6 slurps. And when they said medium sandwich will fill you up, just eating half of it filled me up. I'm not trying to be Goldilocks here, but portion sizes aren't exactly accurate here for some reason. Place is cool. All the way out by Ocean Beach. A line starts forming out the door from time to time. Coffee was decent, but nothing to go bananas over. Sandwich had the fixings: pickles, peppers, onions and more. I wouldn't say that this place was amazing honestly. I think I've had better service at a Starbucks than here. Perhaps its because this place is more laid back, so everything seems a little slower over here. Or perhaps its one of the only cafes near by, along a scenic route, that we're actually paying for the view and not the quality/service. Hmm (think Beach Chalot). Finally, if you use the restroom and think, where is the lock. Um, I can't pee if there isn't a lock. Look up the door higher. Some genius whose over 6 feet probably put that sucker in. After a date hanging out on Ocean Beach, we decided to find a place with something hot to drink. Yelping a late night cafe (you win again, yelp), we drove the few blocks down to Java Beach. The service was very friendly, especially considering it was 10:30PM on a Thursday night. It looked like folk band had just finished playing and were taking down their set. I guess folk music since one of them was carrying out a washboard. They must have been good since there weren't any empty seats inside to be had. Luckily they had a well lit patio out front with long wooden benches. We didn't order anything elaborate, just hot chocolate and cider to keep us warm. We were able to sit outside until closing, watching Muni trains reach the end of the line. I really loved the feel of Java Beach Cafe late at night when the rest of the neighborhood is quiet and dark. Definitely a good stop on the way home from Ocean Beach. read more

Love this place! I had a salad and free wifi. I got there early enough and got a good seat in the booth. Since I sat there for a couple of hours, I bought more food items: lemon bar, salad and cookies. The staff were nice and not pushy (since I was there for a good while). It's a nice spot. Their coffee is really good! However, their food game for GF items is seriously lacking. For breakfast they have fruit. Otherwise there are GF cookies (which are pricey but pretty good) or perhaps some salads depending on the toppings. Their sandwiches and salads are priiiicey.
