Japengo is so so good!! This was arguably the best meal that we had on our Hawaii trip this year. This restaurant/bar is located on the ground floor of the Hyatt Regency Maui - there is complimentary valet parking out front if you're dining at Japengo. The setting is absolutely gorgeous, probably one of the most picturesque al fresco dining experiences I've ever had, especially if you can catch the sunset. The menu has about a half-dozen distinct sections, and we sampled a dish or two from each - all are executed well. The small plate starters arrived, and I really can't imagine a much greater feeling of zen delight than languidly nibbling at kaffir lime-spiked steamed manila clams and tender hoisin ribs while watching the sun slowly droop toward the sea. We ordered a single item off the sushi menu, local ama-ebi, and I truly couldn't decide whether I preferred the two plump shrimp that evening or the terrific ones we had at Nuka the previous night. I found myself daydreaming about ordering the omakase at Jin Hosono's bar indoors, a few steps away, and had to snap myself back to the table in front of me, where the mains of the evening were being served. China Town chow fun with local seafood and Japengo fried rice - both perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, if a little rudimentary in terms of Asian recipes (love that they have half-portions available for many of their most popular dishes). We still had plenty of the amazing clam broth left, and happily finished it with the noodles and rice. By this time, the sun had set and we were plump and happy, but we couldn't resist ordering a slice of the Tengu Ka'anapali pie for dessert. Good Lord, this pie was everything we were hoping for when we made our disappointing trip to the much-overhyped Leoda's. Brownie crust, banana, mac nut ice cream, chocolate, caramel... one of the best desserts I've had this year, and I eat a lot of dessert. The one incident that marred an otherwise perfect evening was that our waiter seemed upset as we were leaving and refused to make eye contact with us or acknowledge us as we were leaving, though the host thanked us warmly. We tipped well, and could not fathom why he might be upset - perhaps it was because we split the bill, so he misinterpreted the tip amounts on each check? In any case, Japengo will always be a top priority visit for me on Maui for as long as it's around. read more

Even though I botched my reservation I was patient with the maître d' and she was very kind enough to assist us, This is a primarily an outdoor restaurant and although it rately rains in Lahaina it actually did it rain their last night. We were provided a table in a corner of the restaurant with an overhang it really was a great table we got to see the sunset. We had both of the featured Mai Tai's I prefer the classic trader VICS mai tai over the more modern version. The sushi rolls we had were very very good and the fish was fresh and looked and tasted great. I've eaten better prepared sushi rice at other restaurants but I would say overall it was very good. We also had some mushrooms as a side dish that I really enjoyed. Our server Ben provided a quality experience with no pretension. The food came out promptly. I want to start off by saying I don't post bad reviews but this has to be said. We had the fish pancake appetizer and couldn't eat more than two bites. It was over breaded, with what I think were the scraps of the kitchen with little to no flavor and the outer edges were hard as a rock. We also tried the spicy edamame, this was not any better. The edamame was overly oily which was a mask for an over cooked product. My wife makes better edamame from a frozen bag in our microwave. Onto the main entree. We tried to stomach two sushi rolls, 1) Fujin Roll, was ok, but the fish was dry. If my life depended on it, I guess this is what I would stomach from this place. 2) Blackened Ahi Roll was a disappointment. The fish had a strange smoky quality to the blackened. I am usually a fan of some smoke but this was inappropriate and misplaced to hide dry lackluster fish quality. It was over sauced, terrible fish, and an excess amount of green roe. The only positive from this roll was the cucumber. Don't let the pictures fool you, this place is only worth going to for a drink. I would recommend the saki because it comes in bottle so you know the restaurant had nothing to do with making it. This place is Asian fusion gone wrong. Save your money and let the Hyatt know that this beautiful restaurant needs help in the kitchen. So sad for such a nice setting. Seems like they are counting on guests only coming once on vacation and paying the higher prices because I will not return unless the menu, chef and food quality change. read more

I've had sushi in Japan and I have to say the sushi here is on par to the quality I had in Japan! I ordered the omakase and an order of uni and they were both AMAZING! It was so good we made another reservation for the next night. The second night the sushi was good but the quality dropped. I am guessing that it was prepared by another chef because the quality and presentation was very different. Regardless it was still delicious. Prices are expensive but I would say it's worth the money to give it a try. I'd come back here for my next visit if I'm looking to splurge. read more

Japengo is more a restaurant that serves Japanese style food, than a Japanese restaurant. The fact that this is the last of 3 Hyatt owned Japengo's is not lost on me. Like many Japanese restaurants I frequent, I ordered Chirashi. It's a good gauge of chef skill, portion size, quality of fish and price. At first glance the presentation is on point, but wait, no ginger. More than a garnish, ginger is a palate cleanser to be eaten between different types of fish. While it looks generous, it's very deceiving, the expertly laid out fish were about half the size of usual serving over a double portion of rice. The rice itself was well seasoned. Onto the fish. Each and every piece looked delicious, but there were some strange inconsistencies. The yellow tail and tuna were fine, but the salmon, while looking fantastic, tasted like it was washed, rinsed and devoid of flavor. The octopus was the surprise of the dish with it's tenderness. To say it was overpriced is not quite fair. I expect 'Resort Pricing' when at a resort. I also expect 'resort quality'. However, I've had better sushi at a resort in Reno. Let that sink in, RENO, NV. Overall, including my wife's Curry seafood bowl & desert, the real star of the meal were the hand crafted sugar cubes served with the lukewarm espresso. read more

tl;dr solid sushi restaurant that should make any sushi fans happy. Japengo is a popular Japanese restaurant in the Kaanapali area so I recommend making reservations a few weeks in advance. If you aren't able to find a table on Open Table, I recommend you go to the restaurant itself early in your trip as they hold a few tables each night that aren't publicly shown. We tried two of their specialty rolls, the Fujin Roll and Ka'anapali Roll. Both were super delicious. Both were creamy and very fresh tasting. If you like tempura, go with the Fujin roll. If you prefer sushi with a spicy kick, go with the Ka'anapali roll. You really can't go wrong with either one. The omakase sushi didn't seem to be a better deal than ordering sushi a la carts so we opted for the latter. We got sake (salmon), otoro (super fatty tuna belly), hamachi (yellowtail), amaebi (sweet shrimp with a fried head), and hotategai (scallop). All of them were fantastic. We were craving some vegetables and got the heirloom carrots. They were cooked well and were very tender, but couldn't really taste the lavender. We weren't going to order dessert since we were stuffed, but our awesome server gave us the ginger creme brûlée on the house to celebrate a birthday. It was super light with just a hint of ginger. The lemon cream was delicious and the anise cookies were a nice herbal spicy complement. Wow! We live between Boston and NYC and eat well often, but this is by far my new favorite restaurant. We had the Kung Pao Duck Meatballs and Blackened Ahi Roll to get started, and both were out of this world! The pork and chicken were our entrees, and both were fantastic. Service and ambiance are unbeatable. I am embarrassed that we didn't get our server's name to compliment her in this review. My wife and I visited on our last night in Maui for our ten year anniversary, and Japengo put every other restaurant we visited this week to shame. What. A. View. We made reservations on Open Table for 6 people at 5:30 on a Sunday. We checked in right away and easily got the best seat in this place. Outside, close to the beach and a sunset over Lanai beautiful enough to write a song about. We had great company and a great knowledgable server who knew the menu extremely well. Almost TOO well as there were a lot of words being said when all we really needed were drinks as fast as possible. (We had two 4 year olds with us) The food itself was great. Nothing blew us away but I think my wife and I also had higher expectations. I think the rolls we had were the Rainbow Roll, the Spicy Tuna roll which was actually better, the spicy edemame which I could not stop eating and the curry dusted calamari. That too was good but not nearly enough of it. The one negative about this was the Happy Hour menu does not extend into the dining area. So stay in the lounge area before dinner if you want a better deal. We chose this place as our last dinner on Maui and we have no regrets. My son and daughter-in-law love this place and highly recommended I join them for dinner the kind hostess greeted us and was able to seat us right away to a table with an absolute gorgeous view of the ocean. I made a reservation at 7 pm and got ready for a wonderful evening with the spouse. Got dress, called Lyft and was on our way to Japengo for the experience. We arrived, had a short wait and then seated right by the water fall of this beautiful resort. Upfront we were like wow at the prices however it was a special occasion so let's do it. We ordered Hawaiian roll for starters and the fish was super fresh which made the roll delish. Next, Melba Cabernet at $65 for spirits, shaking beef noodles and seafood curry for entrees. The rice with the curry was cold however the fish and scallop was good. Shaking beef noodles was bland and lacked flavor on top of being lukewarm when arriving to table. We were excited to celebrate our 30th anniversary at Japengo. Some friends recommended it. My Bride called and made reservations at 7 pm for 7/17 before our trip and explained that it was our 30th anniversary and requested a table overlooking the beach along the edge. She had also filled out on the reservation app that I was allergic to mushrooms and that she was to crab. We decided to go to the restaurant 20 minutes early to make sure that we were getting a table with a view. As we approached the hostess desk two women were inquiring about eating there without a reservation. They were told it would be a 20 minute wait. We proceeded to check in with the hostess and my bride reiterated about the table and the hostess acknowledged her stating it would be ready soon and she directed us to the bar area to wait. At 7:10 I checked back with another hostess and she had said it will be a few minutes more for the table that she had for us. At 7:28 I went back up to the hostess stand and there was a different host and when I inquired about our table he stated that he had been calling us and that we never answered. Neither my bride nor I had received a call, text or email. As the host went to seat us it was at a table in the walkway for entering, the furthest away from a table with a view. We stated that we had waited an additional 30 minutes from our reservation to make sure that we received a table with a view. We were seated at another table that overlooked the servers bus station and the row along the edge that we were hoping for. At this time I noticed the two women that didn't have a reservation were seated in a nice spot 1 row away from the edge before us. The floor manager Karen came over and heard our complaint and she was very kind and comped an appetizer. Mike our server was very attentive to our needs. We ordered the spicy tuna roll. It was very tasty. My bride ordered fish. Per Mike's recommendation I ordered the Pork Chop along with the sweet potato hash. The GM Alejandro came by and apologized about the table concern. As I got into the chop I found the center was bleeding rare (okay with beef but not pork) the hash was also loaded with mushrooms. I requested the menu to verify that this was not included in the hash and there was no mention of shrooms with the hash. I showed Mike my concerns. He apologized. I asked for Alejandro. Karen came over and apologized again and asked if she could comp us a dessert. We declined and asked for our bill. The restaurant did take off everything except for my bride's meal and the spicy tuna roll. Needless to say this experience was not the memorable dinner that we were expecting. My husband and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency on our recent trip to Maui, and Japengo was our first stop immediately after a long flight from NYC as it's located right inside the hotel. It was already past sunset (around 8:30pm) when we sat down, but I know sunset views are known to be amazing from this restaurant. We had spicy edamame as an appetizer, which was actually a pretty large plate. The blackened ahi roll was AMAZING. Also shared the rising sun roll and Japengo fried rice (without shrimp) - both tasted good but not extraordinary. Service was great, fast, attentive. Drinks could've been better. This review is for the happy hour here at the Hyatt. The happy hour mai thai's are not that strong. Sweet if you like that, but stiff they are not. Something to keep in mind. They are beautiful, though. The Hoisin glazed pork ribs are to die for though with a side of green apple slaw which is the absolute bomb! Tasty and perfect together, this dish will not disappoint. While celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in Maui, I really wanted the perfect dinner and atmosphere for our celebratory dinner. Japengo was recommended to me and it just so happened that it is the restaurant in the resort we were staying at, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa! After looking at the menu and photos, I booked and early dinner for 5:30 so we could relax on the patio and take in the sunset. Japengo did not disappoint. Our server was spectacular. The hostesses and the woman who I believe was the manager was warm, welcoming, and attentive. We even had the chance to chat with the chef Gevin, who is beyond talented! We shared a handful of the delicious sushi items while sipping cocktails, which were all wonderful...you can't go wrong with any of the sushi choices. Then we had the mahi mahi, which hands down, had to be the best mahi dish I have ever experienced. It was prepared perfectly and topped on the best forbidden rice I've ever had. This was some of the best food and service we've ever had - anywhere. Everything we ordered was delicious and, though we originally considered the prices inflated due to this restaurant's vacation destination location, after eating we agreed this was well worth the price tag in any location. The sushi rolls were fresh, inventive, and delicious. The filet of beef was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth. Though the food was delicious, the exceptional service we received was really the most delightful part of our visit to Japengo. Jason took care of us, making great menu suggestions when asked, helping us make sure we'd ordered the right amount of food for a hungry couple, and being exceptionally friendly. John's additional service was also a great touch - he cleared plates at exactly the right time, kept our waters full and cold, and always met us with a happy attitude. We were seated later than we would have liked (830pm reservations) even after making reservations 2 months in advance. If you're interested - I would recommend making reservations at least 3 months out - maybe you will be able to get an earlier seating. The service was good (Wayne had a great sense of humor and was extremely friendly). We had two sushi rolls and the Seafood Udon. The food was good 8/10 so I am giving Japengo 4 stars. The portions were good which was a plus because the entrees were a bit pricey ($23 per roll and almost $50 for a bowl of udon). Overall great experience and good food. Looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate a special occasion? While babysitting my granddaughter in Maui, we looked forward to celebrating two birthdays in the family. We ended up going to Japengo in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lahaina and had absolutely a wonderful time! But we almost didn't end up there. Because we had our 3 1/2 granddaughter with us, we had planned an early dinner at the restaurant's opening time at 5:30 pm on a Sun. night. My fault for procrastinating, as when I tried to call the Sat. morning before to make a reservation, I was transferred to the concierge who told me that there were no available seats until 8:45 pm. Gee, I wondered, was this restaurant that popular...must be, as maybe there are a lot of snowbirds from Canada still in town. I also inquired if Japengo provides a kama'aina discount, and the answer was "no." My gut feeling wasn't satisfied with this response, so I pursued it by calling the restaurant directly on Sat. when it started taking phone calls from 5:00 pm. Yes, the hostess confirmed that there were no tables available until 8:45 pm; however, after mentioning that we had a toddler with us and were celebrating two birthdays, she stated that she could accommodate us in by the sushi bar in an enclosed dining area without any views and could order from the full menu. Better than no reservation, so we accepted this arrangement. And, she noted that Japengo offers a 10% kama'aina discount. We arrived about an hour before our 5:30 pm reservation time so that our granddaughter could see the real penguins and koi in the lobby, which she enjoyed. We then checked in with the hostess at Japengo. She told us that they were able to accommodate us in the regular dining area that was surrounded by foliage and overlooks the ocean. Score! We had an excellent table that had a wonderful view of the sun setting. We also had an excellent server, Sheri S., who made us feel so welcomed and ensured that we would have a great evening. As the sun was setting, Sheri got so excited that she wanted to take our picture with the sunset as a backdrop, even if she was busy serving other tables. And if we didn't want to be in the picture, she offered to take a sunset photo by itself with our iPhones. She also surprised us with two orchid leis for the birthday celebrants! Dinner itself couldn't be any better, as Japengo specializes in Asian cuisine infused with island flavors. We had: * Curry Dusted Calamari (1/2 order). With Harusame (cellophane) noodles chukka (seaweed, hot peppers, and sesame seeds) salad, sweet grapes. A very tasty appetizer that was lightly crunchy on the outside with tender calamari. The noodles, seaweed, and grapes perfectly complemented this dish. This is one of many dishes where you can request a half order, as Japengo encourages you to try different dishes. * Grilled Ahi Tuna. With a light teriyaki glaze, ikura, garlic fried rice, hamakua mushrooms, choy sum, wasabi butter. Delicious seared, moist ahi that was glazed perfectly with teri sauce that was not overly sweetened. * Durham Ranch All Natural Rib Eye. Hamakua demi glace; lobster, corn potato croquette, fresh asparagus. Rib eye perfectly marbled and cooked medium with sauce requested on the side so that the taste of the rib eye could be appreciated. So flavorful and tender. * Miso Glazed Salmon. Nice Asian fusion restaurant at the Hyatt regency resort and spa in Ka anapali in Maui. Great atmosphere especially at night. Caught a gorgeous sunset while having dinner. Food was tasty. We started with the omakase raw fish sampler . Then tried several appetizers to share. Finished off with dessert . The dessert was the best part. I enjoyed the maladadas ( fried sugar donut ) which had 3 sauces! (Chocolate, guava,and caramel). A note : We had a party of 8 and almost double tipped. They auto add a gratuity to party of 6 or more. It would have been nice if our server had mentioned this when she handed us our bill. Granted , it is printed on the menu as well . But, after a night of drinks, i didn't read the fine print or pay close enough attention . read more

Everything was . This tray included the Blackened Ahi Roll (4 stars) which was great, but the 5 star of our dinner was the Kaanapali Roll! It was as delectable a sushi roll as I have ever had. All of fish was extremely fresh. The larger cucumber piece provided that great crunch and the sweet, tangy and spicy sauce on the Kaanapali Roll drove it home! Job well done!! read more
