My son and daughter-in-law love this place and highly recommended I join them for dinner the kind hostess greeted us and was able to seat us right away to a table with an absolute gorgeous view of the ocean. Our server Grant was exceptional. He was so patient with some special needs I requested and delivered our meal perfectly. The chefs prepared our food with exceptional and delightful flavors. We ordered the calamari, sushi, broccolini, shrimp with an incredible lemon sauce, house salad. and drinks. All we ordered we would reorder next visit. The seafood used for sashimi and rolls was definitely fresh and of high quality. But that is pretty much it. Maybe we didn't order the right dishes, but nothing really tasted amazing. Table and View we were seated at was nearly prefect. Even though I botched my reservation I was patient with the maître d' and she was very kind enough to assist us, This is a primarily an outdoor restaurant and although it rately rains in Lahaina it actually did it rain their last night. We were provided a table in a corner of the restaurant with an overhang it really was a great table we got to see the sunset. We had both of the featured Mai Tai's I prefer the classic trader VICS mai tai over the more modern version. The sushi rolls we had were very very good and the fish was fresh and looked and tasted great. I've eaten better prepared sushi rice at other restaurants but I would say overall it was very good. We also had some mushrooms as a side dish that I really enjoyed. Our server Ben provided a quality experience with no pretension. The food came out promptly. I've had sushi in Japan and I have to say the sushi here is on par to the quality I had in Japan! I ordered the omakase and an order of uni and they were both AMAZING! It was so good we made another reservation for the next night. The second night the sushi was good but the quality dropped. I am guessing that it was prepared by another chef because the quality and presentation was very different. Regardless it was still delicious. Prices are expensive but I would say it's worth the money to give it a try. I'd come back here for my next visit if I'm looking to splurge. read more

Definitely returning here since we're staying at the Hyatt Maui resort. Be sure to reserve ahead at least 1 week before as there's limited availability if booked last minute. Japengo is more a restaurant that serves Japanese style food, than a Japanese restaurant. The fact that this is the last of 3 Hyatt owned Japengo's is not lost on me. Like many Japanese restaurants I frequent, I ordered Chirashi. It's a good gauge of chef skill, portion size, quality of fish and price. At first glance the presentation is on point, but wait, no ginger. More than a garnish, ginger is a palate cleanser to be eaten between different types of fish. While it looks generous, it's very deceiving, the expertly laid out fish were about half the size of usual serving over a double portion of rice. The rice itself was well seasoned. Onto the fish. Each and every piece looked delicious, but there were some strange inconsistencies. The yellow tail and tuna were fine, but the salmon, while looking fantastic, tasted like it was washed, rinsed and devoid of flavor. The octopus was the surprise of the dish with it's tenderness. To say it was overpriced is not quite fair. I expect 'Resort Pricing' when at a resort. I also expect 'resort quality'. However, I've had better sushi at a resort in Reno. Let that sink in, RENO, NV. Overall, including my wife's Curry seafood bowl & desert, the real star of the meal were the hand crafted sugar cubes served with the lukewarm espresso. read more

We stayed at the Hyatt for our honeymoon and had dinner here. The sushi was absolutely to die for but the seafood ramen was very disappointing. While the flavor was good, the lack of seafood in the meal made it extremely overpriced. 4 thin slices scallops, 2 shrimp, and 1 small piece of crab. Not worth the price. This restaurant is located inside of a hotel, and while the hotel may present extremely fancy and luxurious, the food and service in this restaurant was terrible. Since this restaurant was inside of a hotel, it did not have its own bathroom, which was extremely disappointing. When I went from my table to the bathroom, I was given clear instruction, but upon arriving to the bathroom, I got lost. It wasn't specific on which left I should take the first or the second. The second I got into the bathroom it was absolutely atrocious. There was some extremely strange lady in the bathroom, making moaning and groaning sounds. I get into the stall and there is no toilet paper. No seat covers and there was urine all over the seat. I had to take my wet wipes out of my purse and away down the seats, all by myself. This bathroom looks like it hasn't been cleaned since I was born on the way back in 1969. I did my business in the restroom and it took me minutes to figure out how to flush this damn toilet. Once I figured it out, I had to flush it like seven times. It wouldn't go down. I didn't even take a big dump. Onto the service. The service was terrible to say the least. I believe that when I sit down at a restaurant, the waiter should come over right away asked me if I've done that before and welcome you to the restaurant. This is not the case. Me and my mother-in-law sat down at my table the other day, and our waitress didn't come to my table until 15 minutes after I sat down. She was in a rush and mood, and she wasn't even respectful to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law is 95 years old, and the waiter wasn't nice to her, because she's going deaf in one ear. Besides, the point, my food took forever to get to the table, and they didn't even bring me a placesetting until I asked. Onto the food. For being a sushi place in Hawaii you would assume that the food it would be excellent. Not the case. My mother-in-law got the California roll, and she said her crab in her California roll, tasted like it had been chewed by a cow, regurgitated, chewed again, spit out and put into a sushi roll. Overall, everything else was OK. But not good for a five star restaurant. This restaurant should have three stars MAX. Definitely wasn't expecting anything I got tonight. overall from a customer standpoint, don't go to this place! If you want to enjoy your time as a family and actually get good food, I recommend going to a local place somewhere in town not at this stupid hotel restaurant. Japango is one of my most favorite restaurants in Maui. I try to get there every year for my birthday. This year, something was off. I suspect it has a lot to do with the DraStic decline in tourists due to the mass of Lahaina fires one year ago. They are also remodeling the restaurant so we had to dine in the front bar area. That was not a problem. The issue was that our waitress would disappear on us for long periods of time. There were only three or four tables, but we waited over 40 minutes for raw food. It doesn't take 40 minutes to prepare a sushi roll and a tray of Hamachi sashimi. Anyway, I will certainly give them another chance, but this was not a typical dining experience. I hope everyone continues to visit Maui. They desperately need our support. read more

For the occasional friend who prefer meat over seafood the reports are very complimentary. The seating in much of the restaurant offers a splendid view of not only the beach but also the distant autos arriving into Kaanapali, reminiscent of small villages in the South of France. This is a popular restruant not only popular with tourists but is also among those who have homes and condos on Island. This is our favorite restaurant on Maui as you might assume. tl;dr solid sushi restaurant that should make any sushi fans happy. Japengo is a popular Japanese restaurant in the Kaanapali area so I recommend making reservations a few weeks in advance. If you aren't able to find a table on Open Table, I recommend you go to the restaurant itself early in your trip as they hold a few tables each night that aren't publicly shown. We tried two of their specialty rolls, the Fujin Roll and Ka'anapali Roll. Both were super delicious. Both were creamy and very fresh tasting. If you like tempura, go with the Fujin roll. If you prefer sushi with a spicy kick, go with the Ka'anapali roll. You really can't go wrong with either one. The omakase sushi didn't seem to be a better deal than ordering sushi a la carts so we opted for the latter. We got sake (salmon), otoro (super fatty tuna belly), hamachi (yellowtail), amaebi (sweet shrimp with a fried head), and hotategai (scallop). All of them were fantastic. We were craving some vegetables and got the heirloom carrots. They were cooked well and were very tender, but couldn't really taste the lavender. We weren't going to order dessert since we were stuffed, but our awesome server gave us the ginger creme brûlée on the house to celebrate a birthday. It was super light with just a hint of ginger. The lemon cream was delicious and the anise cookies were a nice herbal spicy complement. Wow! We live between Boston and NYC and eat well often, but this is by far my new favorite restaurant. We had the Kung Pao Duck Meatballs and Blackened Ahi Roll to get started, and both were out of this world! The pork and chicken were our entrees, and both were fantastic. Service and ambiance are unbeatable. I am embarrassed that we didn't get our server's name to compliment her in this review. My wife and I visited on our last night in Maui for our ten year anniversary, and Japengo put every other restaurant we visited this week to shame. What. A. View. We made reservations on Open Table for 6 people at 5:30 on a Sunday. We checked in right away and easily got the best seat in this place. Almost TOO well as there were a lot of words being said when all we really needed were drinks as fast as possible. (We had two 4 year olds with us) The food itself was great. Nothing blew us away but I think my wife and I also had higher expectations. I think the rolls we had were the Rainbow Roll, the Spicy Tuna roll which was actually better, the spicy edemame which I could not stop eating and the curry dusted calamari. That too was good but not nearly enough of it. The one negative about this was the Happy Hour menu does not extend into the dining area. So stay in the lounge area before dinner if you want a better deal. We chose this place as our last dinner on Maui and we have no regrets. A very neat restaurant with primarily outdoor seating (and some inside too) with incredible views of the Hyatt resort and the ocean. We came here for the first dinner on our honeymoon with reservations booked in advance and got a table along the edge of the patio which had a great view! Last night in Maui and we were celebrating birthday vibes. My person wanted sushi, Asian fusion and fresh fish. So after researching this place popped up as the place to go for all three. I made a reservation at 7 pm and got ready for a wonderful evening with the spouse. Got dress, called Lyft and was on our way to Japengo for the experience. We arrived, had a short wait and then seated right by the water fall of this beautiful resort. Upfront we were like wow at the prices however it was a special occasion so let's do it. We ordered Hawaiian roll for starters and the fish was super fresh which made the roll delish. Next, Melba Cabernet at $65 for spirits, shaking beef noodles and seafood curry for entrees. The rice with the curry was cold however the fish and scallop was good. Shaking beef noodles was bland and lacked flavor on top of being lukewarm when arriving to table. Atmosphere: The view from Japengo is stunning. We got to see an amazing Maui sunset - like this sunset could've been printed on postcards. Once the sun sets, the ambience is set by the tiki torches that surround the restaurant. Japengo is a great place for a date if your date isn't a foodie. If you blindfolded me and asked me if it was from an AYCE sushi spot i'd say yes. - China Town Chow Fun - At $41 this dish is a rip off. You can get better Chow fun at your local Chinese restaurant for half the price. I felt like the noodles weren't cooked right, and that there weren't enough of them??? But I guess that ok because they weren't good??? - Omakase - 5 pieces for $31. The fish was good, but I wouldn't say that it was great. I know they've won awards for best sushi, so I'm guessing that I'm either a sushi snob or the competition is rigged. The salmon nigiri was tasty and it was fresh. Otoro was one of the nigiris included in the Omakase and it was disappointing. When I think of otoro, I think of rich/soft/melt in your mouth goodness. What I got was rubbery/hard to chew tuna. - Japengo Malasadas - The sauces that are included with this dish are very nice. I liked the variety and I thought that the Malasadas were a fun dessert choice. Staff: The service at Japengo was satisfactory to me. Our main server wasn't very personable and she didn't seem too thrilled to be serving us. Our secondary server however was really nice and I appreciate that he tried his best to be friendly and kind to our group. We had a group of 7 and we were automatically charged 18% gratuity - which our server didn't mention upon handing us our bill. Was it sus to withhold that information? I'm not sure. My husband and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency on our recent trip to Maui, and Japengo was our first stop immediately after a long flight from NYC as it's located right inside the hotel. It was already past sunset (around 8:30pm) when we sat down, but I know sunset views are known to be amazing from this restaurant. We had spicy edamame as an appetizer, which was actually a pretty large plate. The blackened ahi roll was AMAZING. Also shared the rising sun roll and Japengo fried rice (without shrimp) - both tasted good but not extraordinary. Service was great, fast, attentive. Drinks could've been better. Overall we had a great first dinner on Maui and if you're looking for a Japanese option on the island this is a pretty good bet. read more

This review is for the happy hour here at the Hyatt. The happy hour mai thai's are not that strong. Sweet if you like that, but stiff they are not. Something to keep in mind. They are beautiful, though. The Hoisin glazed pork ribs are to die for though with a side of green apple slaw which is the absolute bomb! Tasty and perfect together, this dish will not disappoint. So good...I got it two nights in a row. Just do it!! They have music at the happy hour from 5:30-7:30ish. Both nights he music was quite enjoyable. While celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary in Maui, I really wanted the perfect dinner and atmosphere for our celebratory dinner. Japengo was recommended to me and it just so happened that it is the restaurant in the resort we were staying at, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa! After looking at the menu and photos, I booked and early dinner for 5:30 so we could relax on the patio and take in the sunset. Japengo did not disappoint. Our server was spectacular. The hostesses and the woman who I believe was the manager was warm, welcoming, and attentive. We even had the chance to chat with the chef Gevin, who is beyond talented! We shared a handful of the delicious sushi items while sipping cocktails, which were all wonderful...you can't go wrong with any of the sushi choices. Then we had the mahi mahi, which hands down, had to be the best mahi dish I have ever experienced. It was prepared perfectly and topped on the best forbidden rice I've ever had. This was some of the best food and service we've ever had - anywhere. Everything we ordered was delicious and, though we originally considered the prices inflated due to this restaurant's vacation destination location, after eating we agreed this was well worth the price tag in any location. The sushi rolls were fresh, inventive, and delicious. The filet of beef was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth. Though the food was delicious, the exceptional service we received was really the most delightful part of our visit to Japengo. Jason took care of us, making great menu suggestions when asked, helping us make sure we'd ordered the right amount of food for a hungry couple, and being exceptionally friendly. John's additional service was also a great touch - he cleared plates at exactly the right time, kept our waters full and cold, and always met us with a happy attitude. Venue was fantastic beautiful romantic setting at the Hyatt Regency (complementary valet parking during our dinner visit). We were seated later than we would have liked (830pm reservations) even after making reservations 2 months in advance. If you're interested - I would recommend making reservations at least 3 months out - maybe you will be able to get an earlier seating. The service was good (Wayne had a great sense of humor and was extremely friendly). We had two sushi rolls and the Seafood Udon. The food was good 8/10 so I am giving Japengo 4 stars. The portions were good which was a plus because the entrees were a bit pricey ($23 per roll and almost $50 for a bowl of udon). Overall great experience and good food. Looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate a special occasion? While babysitting my granddaughter in Maui, we looked forward to celebrating two birthdays in the family. We ended up going to Japengo in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Lahaina and had absolutely a wonderful time! But we almost didn't end up there. Because we had our 3 1/2 granddaughter with us, we had planned an early dinner at the restaurant's opening time at 5:30 pm on a Sun. night. My fault for procrastinating, as when I tried to call the Sat. morning before to make a reservation, I was transferred to the concierge who told me that there were no available seats until 8:45 pm. Gee, I wondered, was this restaurant that popular...must be, as maybe there are a lot of snowbirds from Canada still in town. I also inquired if Japengo provides a kama'aina discount, and the answer was "no." My gut feeling wasn't satisfied with this response, so I pursued it by calling the restaurant directly on Sat. when it started taking phone calls from 5:00 pm. Yes, the hostess confirmed that there were no tables available until 8:45 pm; however, after mentioning that we had a toddler with us and were celebrating two birthdays, she stated that she could accommodate us in by the sushi bar in an enclosed dining area without any views and could order from the full menu. Better than no reservation, so we accepted this arrangement. And, she noted that Japengo offers a 10% kama'aina discount. We arrived about an hour before our 5:30 pm reservation time so that our granddaughter could see the real penguins and koi in the lobby, which she enjoyed. We then checked in with the hostess at Japengo. She told us that they were able to accommodate us in the regular dining area that was surrounded by foliage and overlooks the ocean. Score! We had an excellent table that had a wonderful view of the sun setting. We also had an excellent server, Sheri S., who made us feel so welcomed and ensured that we would have a great evening. As the sun was setting, Sheri got so excited that she wanted to take our picture with the sunset as a backdrop, even if she was busy serving other tables. And if we didn't want to be in the picture, she offered to take a sunset photo by itself with our iPhones. She also surprised us with two orchid leis for the birthday celebrants! Dinner itself couldn't be any better, as Japengo specializes in Asian cuisine infused with island flavors. We had: * Curry Dusted Calamari (1/2 order). With Harusame (cellophane) noodles chukka (seaweed, hot peppers, and sesame seeds) salad, sweet grapes. A very tasty appetizer that was lightly crunchy on the outside with tender calamari. The noodles, seaweed, and grapes perfectly complemented this dish. This is one of many dishes where you can request a half order, as Japengo encourages you to try different dishes. * Grilled Ahi Tuna. With a light teriyaki glaze, ikura, garlic fried rice, hamakua mushrooms, choy sum, wasabi butter. Delicious seared, moist ahi that was glazed perfectly with teri sauce that was not overly sweetened. * Durham Ranch All Natural Rib Eye. Hamakua demi glace; lobster, corn potato croquette, fresh asparagus. Rib eye perfectly marbled and cooked medium with sauce requested on the side so that the taste of the rib eye could be appreciated. So flavorful and tender. * Miso Glazed Salmon. Stir-fry veggies, tofu, yuzu butter sauce, jasmine rice. Moist, flaky salmon so very flavorful with a light miso and butter sauce. * Flatbread pizza, fruit cup, whole milk, chocolate gelato. Our granddaughter "inhaled" everything, eating ¾ of the pizza and the entire two scoops of the gelato, so it must have been good. * Japengo Malasadas. Swirled poi and sweet bread, Kona coffee ganache, guava compute, salted caramel. Complimentary birthday dessert from the regular menu with great tasting sauces. * Tengu Ka'anapali Pie. Brownie crust, banana, mac nut ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, chocolate. Complimentary birthday dessert from the regular menu with a great combination and presentation of sweets. What a great birthday celebration - locally grown products prepared in Pacific Rim cuisine that were amazing and delicious; awesome desserts; our excellent server , Sheri S., who we felt was part of the family; superb location of our dining table; a perfect sunset and ocean views; pretty orchid leis; validated valet parking, penguins and koi; and kama'aina discount! We waited for 40 minutes even though we had a reservation. Once we were finally seated the sun was blazing in my daughter and husbands eyes. Our kids ordered the salad off the kids menu and it was a light layer on a side plate of what looked like a spring mix salad for $10 each. Once the salad was served they didn't bring the dressing for the salad for an addition 10 minutes. We had to order an additional plate for the kids to share. The rolls were ok at most. Nice Asian fusion restaurant at the Hyatt regency resort and spa in Ka anapali in Maui. Great atmosphere especially at night. Caught a gorgeous sunset while having dinner. Food was tasty. We started with the omakase raw fish sampler . Then tried several appetizers to share. Finished off with dessert . The dessert was the best part. I enjoyed the maladadas ( fried sugar donut ) which had 3 sauces! (Chocolate, guava,and caramel). A note : We had a party of 8 and almost double tipped. They auto add a gratuity to party of 6 or more. It would have been nice if our server had mentioned this when she handed us our bill. Granted , it is printed on the menu as well . But, after a night of drinks, i didn't read the fine print or pay close enough attention . read more
