Not sure how they have so many good reviews. Must be people from places that don't have good sushi. We live in San Diego, so Sushi is a specialty. From the beginning we had to wait 40 minutes to be seated, even though we had a reservation. Then they sat us where the Sun was beaming right on us. But we're on vacation and we're set to make the most of it. The Spicy edamame was bland and overcooked. The selection of rolls is poor at best. I had the Kaanapali roll and the "Sunset Roll". They were "meh". Fish wasn't the freshest and the inside of the roll was so "squishy" it really turned me off. Didn't even finish them. The worst part was paying $10 for 5 pieces of spring mix and 3 cherry tomatoes that they called a children entree salad. Needless to say we had to order them additional food. read more

Honestly pretty upset, had a reservation put down birthday and they basically never brought it up. We had about a 1/5 of the attention we deserved. No mention of the reservation notes or the birthday detail we had in there. I had to ask for a high chair at check in, getting hosted, and the server. So my wife had to awkwardly stand there with a baby in her arms. The hotel itself is pretty much an Asian themed hotel, it's nice but nothing worth the hassle or the walk of self parking. For an hour and a half they would have wanted 11$, remember to ask your server for a ticket. Now the food. Japengo doesn't know what Asian country it wants ti belong to. Decoration says Japanese, it "sounds" Japanese but methods are anywhere but. My wife had a curry that's very Thai inspired. I had an "udon" yaki seafood. Terribly salty. It tasted like it came from a teppanyaki where they don't know what salt they use on their steaks or where the sauce is eyeballed. My son and my friends daughter had the kids menu. The mahi /rice was extremely plain and Mac and cheese was extremely lackluster. Sushi looked okay but not good enough for Hawaii for this price. To say I won't be back again is an understatement. Also ordered Sizzling Steak Bites Appetizer and Seafood Yaki Udon - this dish was so unforgettable: so tasty with the seafood, especially my favorite scallops, grilled all the way through, just the way I like it. The restaurant is quite busy every night and if you don't have a reservation you may not be able to get a table. The atmosphere is relaxed with a great island rhythm. The food does take some time to arrive after ordering. Especially the sushi and sashimi items. Order those first. I think the Daily Catch Mahi Mahi was my favorite though. The fish was really cooked perfectly. Beautiful juicy layers of that flaky fish with a great buerre blanc. Who doesn't love buerre blanc! I couldn't taste the lemongrass too much but it did mention that flavor profile for the sauce. One thing I forgot to order was the Scallops. It was too late by the time I noticed it. As a local on Maui, it has not been easy to get reservations last minute due to occupancy restrictions from this pandemic. We scored a last minute staycation at the Hyatt for the hubbies birthday and needed dinner reservations last minute. The staff went above and beyond to find us a spot for our family to enjoy our fabulous dinner. Our waiter was so attentive, knowledgable, fun and accommodating. Atmosphere: I would recommend coming during the day to enjoy the view! We came at night and though we heard the waves and felt the rain, no view. When it rained, we were not offered another table and sat in the rain. I wish tables had umbrellas to protect patrons. Parking: We parked in beach front access. Not many spots to choose from so leave early just in case you have to improvise. Menu: Great selection but if you are like me and allergic to shellfish, there isn't much more for you. I mostly went here for my husband to enjoy some choices. I got the roasted chicken breast and he got the rolls. We both enjoyed our food but we weren't checked in on through the meal. The table next to us saw our server probably triple than we saw him. Overall, food was good but service was ok. We parked and walked over, which was nice, but we weren't sure where the restaurant was at first. Make sure to just follow the crowd and someone will help you once you get in the hotel. The beau and I have seen Japengo for years and we finally decided to check it out. If you're in Kaanapali, getting here isn't too hard, but our server told us it's a 1.5 mile walk from the Sheraton to the Hyatt, so it's a bit of a trek. We took the shuttle to Whaler's Village and then walked, but it was still almost a mile. I'm not sure what parking is like here, so if you're not staying here, getting a ride is probably easiest. Japengo is through the lobby to the right. It overlooks the pool area and has stunning views of the ocean and lanai. There is a bar area, indoor sushi bar, and open air seating with views of the ocean and the sunset. Our server was very good. The food was quite good as well. Several of the dishes can be ordered as half portions which we took advantage of. I can't imagine what full portions of these dishes are because the half portions are huge. The nigiri was surprisingly good, with a very good preparation by the chefs. If you're in the area, you could do much worse than Japengo. I probably won't return because it's just not that convenient, but I liked the food. read more

We went December 4th with a group of 10. Our friends made the reservation and we were seated inside. Personally, I would have preferred outside but I didn't make the reservation it's just much prettier. Our server was great and very knowledgeable. My hubs and I both had dirty martinis. Good. He ordered the ribeye and said it was fine, cooked as ordered but nothing special. He wasn't unhappy. I ordered the eggplant and shrimp salad appetizer which was disappointing. I love Japanese eggplant so was looking for tri it and the shrimp was the best part. I also ordered the blackened ahi role with two pieces of hamachi. Very good and I would order that again. We also tasted our friends dishes. They had a side of the mashed potatoes. Yum. A California roll and also a shrimp tempura roll but I'm not sure which one. It was very good. The presentation was beautiful on everything coming out of the kitchen. As expected when you travel it's pricey but we know that. Our bill was $208 including our tip. Spectacular views, quality food, and excellent service at one of Hyatts fine dining restaurants. Japengo was our first date night in Maui and we enjoyed our experience very much. The entire restaurant is extremely Covid safe with mask and vaccine mandates, digital menus, and social distancing. The social distancing makes getting a reservation a bit tricky, but if you call well ahead of time they will find beautiful spot for you. When we entered we were immediately greeted by our hostess Taylor who seated us and was well versed on the menu; she gave us some tips on her favorites which was quite helpful. We told her we were waiting for another couple and she promptly led them to us when they arrived. Our table was distanced from others but not too awkwardly; it was also a front row table with a sensational ocean view and sunset. The setting couldn't be better! Once seated our waitress took our drink orders and was very attentive. We were never pressured to order right away and when we were ready so was she. My husband and I ordered the rainbow roll, shrimp tempura roll, spicy tuna roll, pork bao buns, and asparagus. Despite seeming like a lot of food it really wasn't; it was also extremely expensive...though that's to be expected when you're on vacation in Hawaii. The bao buns were delicious, but the sushi rolls were pretty average and the asparagus lacked flavor. We were so looking forward to some of the best sushi ever based on some reviews, the location, and the price tag, but sadly it was mediocre and probably not worth the $20-25 per roll. Despite the flavors lacking you can tell the food is all quality and fresh. Our friends had the steak and fish which they said was decent, but nothing special. Japengo does a beautiful job of being safe and clean, providing good service, showing guests a good time with an amazing view, and putting decent food on the table. The food here was really good! We're glad that it was conveniently located in the Hyatt Regency resort where we stayed. We wanted to order a bit of everything to try. Ordered two sushi rolls, vegetable stir fry, steamed clams and pork buns. The vegetable stir fry was nice and clean - the vegetables had a nice crisp crunch. The steamed clams were so fresh and juicy - the broth that they were cooked in had a sweet refreshing taste. I'm guessing in Hawaii you cannot get seafood that isn't fresh. The only thing that we would not get again is the pork buns - the sauce on the pork was so salty that even pairing it with the bun did not help cut out the saltiness. The actual pork itself was nice and juicy and tender - just needed to be a bit lighter with the salt or whatever sauce they marinate it with. read more

We rushed here before closing their kitchen (which seems a bit early for the weekend) 9:30 PM. I love that they give you "half size" portions for several of their dishes. Otherwise the prices are very expensive. I love having a chance to try different food. The short ribs half size was actually a very decent size. I got a rainbow roll sushi and it was super tasty! It was a good portion size for someone who was not starving. I wish we had a chance to dine here during the day time. The Pros: -excellent food- we had sushi rolls, udon soup, edamame, fried rice, curry and steak. Everybody loved their food- very fresh and incredibly flavorful. We also had a couple of their cocktails and sake flights- all very high quality as well. -table service was quick- constantly had ice cold water and our cups were always filled immediately -the view- unbeatable!!! Incredible sunset! -cleanliness - very, very clean! The Cons: -service was really "off" in timing. We were seated and waited about 20 minutes before anybody came and brought water or took a drink order. It definitely took another 15 minutes for our drinks to show up. The waitress took our order quickly, but she was unable to tell us about the dishes, nor could she come even close to pronouncing them. Then, when we were done and asked for our check, it took another 20 minutes for her to bring it. So, there was a lot of sitting around and waiting without food or drinks in front of us.
