Shaking Beef Noodles
Shelly H.

Japengo is located inside the Hyatt resort and was an easy, short walk from our stay at the Westin. The outdoor patio alone is worth the visit -- the view is absolutely breathtaking, especially around sunset. We ordered the Unagi Roll ($29), Shaking Beef Noodles ($48), and the Kanpachi Kama ($37), which wasn't actually on the menu. They had run out of the Hamachi Kama (I overheard they only get about 3-5 per day), so they offered Kanpachi instead -- and it ended up being a great choice. While the prices are definitely on the higher side, that's expected at a five-star resort in Maui. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was stunning, and the food was delicious all around. For the views, quality, and overall experience, it was absolutely worth it. I'd recommend Japengo to anyone visiting Maui!

Our server Jeffrey was amazing and so genuine! We got the pork buns and Kaanapali and hawaian roll. Both amazing! Green tea and a mango cocktail! all delicious options. Oh and the views of the sunset ! You can't beat that! Highly highly recommended

Great ambiance! Went for after dinner drinks and dessert. So yummy! We sat at the bar but the seating areas looked super inviting as well. Love this new space. The bartenders were very friendly despite being very busy.

Nice location in Hyatt Regency, and if you're seated in the right spot, a great sunset. We showed up an hour before our reservation to have a couple cocktails at the bar, all was going great until another couple showed up wanting to have dinner at the bar and the bartenders tried their best to get us to leave for what I guess they expected to be a higher ticket. They even had the hostess approach us and ask if we'd checked in. 20 minutes before our reservation, so we had not. She told us a table would be ready soon. All too weird. At our scheduled time, we were called and taken to a table. We got a great spot and excellent service from Carrie. As others have nentioned, prices are pretty high, but quality was very good. Curry Dusted Calamari was super tasty but were really tiny pieces. Otoro Sashimi was excellent. Swordfish was very good, but plating was pretty bland. Still, a good dish. All in all, it was a good meal. I wish they hadn't made it so weird at the bar, but I'd go back.

Food seems to be hit or miss here. Very pricey with mediocre or bland flavors for many of the dishes, including the calamari, beef noddles, edamame, sushi, carrots, and Mac n cheese. Shrimp, lobster, and hamachi kama were good. View is gorgeous obviously since it overlooks the water. However, not enough lighting at night. I could barely see my food and needed to use my phones light. The little table lights they have weren't enough. Most of our food didn't take long to come out but two items took a long time, which should have been the easier ones (lobster tail and grilled fish which both cook fast). Most of our table was done eating by the time I got my grilled fish.

Excellent service. Easy to book online during our stay at the Hyatt. Really nice views of the ocean. Amazing sushi and chirashi don. I ordered the lychee pineapple drink they made it less sweet for me. Then we go the malasadas with the lilokoi syrup and the macadamia nut sauce omg -- so good!!!

Japengo delivered on every level. Stunning oceanfront views from the Hyatt Regency resort, incredibly fresh sushi, and flavorful Asian-inspired dishes that were delicious. Service was friendly and on point, and the cocktails were perfect for sunset. Pricey, but absolutely worth it. A must-do Maui dinner.

I went to Japengo with a party of 13. We had made reservations in advance. A couple of thoughts: - Sushi was good, fresh and tastes great - Dessert was epic and would recommend - we were seated at two separate tables which lead to different kitchen timing for Adults vs Kids table - Service was not great.. 2-3 stars at best. Not everyone was offered drinks when we sat down, when we did all finally order them (in 3 seperate waves due to the servers inability to ask us all the first time), it was about 20 minutes into the meal and 25 min after sitting down to even order I would overall recommend and hope we had a one off service experience

Really nice dinner spot in the Hyatt Regency. The oceanfront views are beautiful and the vibes are set with the dim lighting and chic décor. We started with some salads that were deliciously fresh and opened up the appetite. My bf and I split the 5 piece omakase, 2 rolls, and the garlic noodles. We were surprised by how full we ended up leaving, the rolls here are ginormous! Even though they are a staggering $30 a roll, I did feel like the size of them justified the price. Of course all the fish was super fresh and buttery, and every piece of the omakase was delicious. The chu-toro was a standout, it was really melt-in-your-mouth and rich. Other orders at the table included the shaking beef noodles and the special fish of the day, which all got great reviews too. We had a delicious bottle of sake to wash everything down, and ended the night with the ginger crème brulee. We really got to enjoy dinner and weren't rushed at all, I think we got to enjoy a good 2 hours of great conversation and food. It's definitely a splurge to come here but I think the quality and vibes make it all worth it!

I stayed at the resort and stopped by for a quick bite and drink. I didn't make a reservation and was seated at the bar. The ambiance was very intimate and beautiful views. Service was excellent, my server super attentive and fast. I tried the Ube Sour, a gin-based cocktail that was strong but balanced with the sweet ube. The fish was fresh, which I appreciated. However, the poke block missed the mark for me. The rice was hard and fell apart easily, and the poke itself didn't feel authentic. For the small portion, the price didn't feel justified. I'd be open to giving the place another shot next time.

Japengo is at the Hyatt Regency Maui and located at the lobby level and overlooks the hotel pools. We made same day reservations and was able to get a table for 4 later in the evening on a Wednesday. There was a line of people trying to make reservations also so book before or earlier. We arrived a few minutes early for the reservation and our table was ready. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought. Large covered dining area plus the dining on the newly renovated and extra large deck over looking the pool. Evening time was dark inside but the table lights were bright enough at the table and added the nice ambiance. Our server was so friendly and patient and I saw that she was on top of every request and order from all the tables in her section. Amazing skills! We ordered the white lotus mocktail, a OJ, kids Mac and cheese, curry dusted calamari, Korean seafood pancakes, pork belly bao, Rainbow and Shrimp Tempura rolls, and the blackened tuna roll. The dishes and sushi rolls are generous portions and we didn't understand or were starving. We ordered too much for the table. Even the kids Mac and cheese came in this huge bowl enough for two kids. All the sushi rolls were fresh and delicious. They were topped with this wasabi tobiko. I've never had anything like that, and I wished I had more to top other dishes. The Korea seafood pancakes were really crispy on the outside and light and doughy on the inside with the seafood. The sauce on top was great. If they had called this seafood hush puppies, I would have been happy with the order. Each piece was ginormous but didn't have much green onions. I was expecting the pancakes to have a lot more green onions. The pork belly bao buns had a nice pickled salad on top. The buns were not very fluffy but serviceable. The dish was ok. The curry dusted calamari was also just ok. Calamari was fried well and crispy. The curry dust was just not the flavor we liked. And it came with these grape halves around which didn't really go well with the calamari or flavor in my opinion. I think if we ever come back, we'll stick with the sushi menu.

Beautiful views especially around sunset, reservations highly recommended. Lychee pineapple cocktail was perfect - not too sweet , just a tad on the smaller side. Dishes were hit or miss (and very pricey)! Tofu stir fry should be completely skipped - very bland; seafood udon was super yummy (but also $50 for a relatively small portion). Ginger crème brûlée at the end was very refreshing

Very fresh, delicious sushi rolls with a spectacular view at sunset from their patio seating. This place is very popular! So definitely make sure you make reservations ahead of time if possible! Service was fast, friendly and took care of all our menu questions and request. Note, the sushi kitchen gets busy, so if you forget to order something with your main order, you might be waiting a long time to get it. So plan ahead! Highly recommend.

Ambiance was nice. Food was good but too expensive for what it was. Expensive sushi was fine, but a cup of Miso soup for $8 is too much.

Sushi wasn't worth $26 a roll, and it was lukewarm. Miso soup was cold, and the spicy edamame wasn't spicy at all.

Do they use real crab for the california rolls?

Is there a kids menu available?

Yes!

Is there free parking?

There is a "beach access" parking just outside the Refency Hyatt that always had a few open parking spots. You can park there for free and walk a short distance to Japengo (just inside Regency Hyatt).

My mother has pretty advanced Alzheimer's and takes a long time to eat; when I let the GM know that I thought his time allowed was too short and not handicap friendly, he was SO offended and started arguing with me in front of all his customers He said "that was the way they do things"... and that "it's ok, we get many bad reviews." I was so appalled!!! Such a shame, I loved their tuna avo! I don't think the food is worth the rushed service, (their cocktails are also lackluster) but they do have a nice location by the water with pretty sunset. If corporate management changes the policy to make it a more leisurely experience, it could be worth returning. But right now this is such a rushed, high turnover diner experience, not to mention the manager's way of handling customer feedback is rather shocking. 10/20/2026 Updated review based on restaurant's response Thank you for your response but I can't fathom going back to your restaurant after this incident. When I shared my experience with friends in hospitality, food industry, or just simple restaurant goers, everyone was appalled at: 1) the short time allotment per table of 1 hour and 15 minutes as repeatedly stated by your manager (he adamantly said he would show me stacks of receipts of tables being turned over at the duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes, and that was the way "we do business at Star Noodle") 2) the way I was treated as a customer. The fact that Star Noodle has someone at managerial level to not know the basic table time allotment of 2 hours, as you shared, tells me either he's very incompetent (and the company made a mistake hiring him/neglected to train him) or you are lying. Either scenario is not good for the company or your customers. I appreciate the response but unless you replace this gentleman or somehow thoroughly train him in both knowledge and customer experience, I don't see how things can improve.

The space is incredibly sleek, offering fantastic indoor and outdoor seating. The service was very good; highly knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, and they offered great recommendations. For my main, I had the Carrot Risotto and added perfectly seared scallops--a truly fantastic dish. My wife ordered the Tuna Tataki and really enjoyed it, though personally, it was the only miss of the evening for me. We chose Ka'ana Kitchen for our final night to celebrate our niece's 15th birthday. Unfortunately, the way restaurant management handled a very simple wine issue completely derailed the evening. My father-in-law ordered a 2018 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon, specifically as listed on the wine menu. The bottle brought to the table was a 2019. We noticed the discrepancy before it was opened and politely pointed it out. This should have taken 30 seconds to resolve: acknowledge the mistake, apologize, and offer an alternative. Instead, our server became defensive and tried to explain why the different vintage should not matter. Restaurant manager Matthew then became involved and continued focusing on why the 2019 was supposedly equivalent. But we were not asking for a discount or debating the quality of the wine. The restaurant listed a 2018 and presented a 2019. That was the entire issue. Matthew told us he had consulted the wine director, Vivi, so we asked to speak with her. That was when the situation became genuinely unacceptable. Rather than simply acknowledging an obvious and easily correctable mistake, Vivi was remarkably defensive, dismissive, and confrontational. She repeatedly told us that vintages "change all the time" and defended the restaurant's handling of the situation. When we pointed out that staff should verify the vintage being presented against what is actually listed on the wine menu, her response was essentially that she would "take that into consideration." The tone was astonishing. We have dined at excellent restaurants throughout the U.S. and internationally, and none of us could recall ever being spoken to by restaurant management that way over such a straightforward issue. Bringing the wrong vintage was a minor mistake. Refusing to own it and treating guests as though they were the problem for pointing it out was the serious failure. Before our entrees arrived, Matthew returned, apologized, and told us the wine would be comped. We appreciated the gesture, but the apology felt more like damage control than genuine ownership of what had happened. He then told us that he had checked the surname on our reservation, realized our family was Korean, and explained that he was Korean as well and that his mother would not have approved of how we had been treated. That was extraordinarily awkward. Why should learning that we were Korean have changed his assessment of whether we had been treated appropriately? Our ethnicity should have had absolutely nothing to do with recognizing that the situation had been mishandled. After that interaction, other staff members delivered our entrees and our server essentially disappeared. I had specifically asked before ordering the ahi whether the kitchen could provide a piece without the prominent tough white connective tissue and was assured the request would be communicated to the chef. The tuna arrived with exactly what I had asked to avoid, and our server never returned to check whether it was acceptable. My 15-year-old niece was also served an expensive steak with a knife so dull she struggled to cut it. Portions of my accompanying noodles were cooked until hard and crunchy. When our server finally returned near the end of the meal and I pointed out the noodles and asked that he show them to the chef, his response was simply, "That's how it's made." The restaurant ultimately comped the wine and took care of several desserts and drinks, which we appreciated. But removing items from a bill after an experience has gone badly is not the same as good service recovery. What began as a trivial wine-list discrepancy became a cascade of defensiveness, a remarkably unpleasant interaction with the wine director, an inappropriate and uncomfortable reference to our ethnicity from the restaurant manager, and then a noticeable breakdown in basic table service. That is especially disappointing because we genuinely love Andaz Maui and return regularly. We had spent a fantastic family vacation together in one of the resort's villas and deliberately chose Ka'ana Kitchen for a milestone birthday dinner on our final evening. Mistakes happen. Great restaurants own them. I sincerely hope Andaz leadership reviews what happened at our table, particularly the conduct of the restaurant manager and wine director. This was not simply an incorrect bottle of wine or a disappointing meal. It was a failure of hospitality and service recovery that warrants serious management attention. Eight members of our family left what should have been a wonderful birthday dinner talking about how badly Ka'ana Kitchen handled something that should have been effortless to correct. That should concern a resort of Andaz Maui's caliber.
