As a woman, I am always concerned about getting ripped off when I take my car in to get fixed. Well, I'm happy to report, that I did not get ripped off! In fact, just the opposite. The mechanic, Andre, was a lovely person. He had driven with to to my work, a few blocks away, and then drove my car back to their shop to diagnose it. I could tell by talking to Andre that I was in very good hands. I could tell by his eyes that he wasn't the type of person that would rip me off. The guy at the service desk was awesome! He looked for ways to save me money with coupons. I checked the estimate he presented to me using an online website to see if it was in the right range for this area -- it was. Then, I called another local shop and asked them how much would it cost for the same repair. It was a bit cheaper (about $56), so they lowered their price. They also threw in a light bulb change for my tag and inspected my car without charge when they were finished. AND to top it off, they gave me a free loaner to use because my car was going to be there overnight and I needed to get home. Another wonderful thing was I had forgotten my wallet (of all days) and the guy at the service desk (love him!) worked *patiently* with me until I could prove my identity and produce a credit card to complete the agreement for the loaner car. (THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!) My car feels brand new!!! It is so smooth and has so much power now! I can't believe it! I can't say enough positives about my experience here. I will definitely come back! This garage couldn't handle a brake job on a common make and model. After replacing all four brake pads, the rotors, and the brake fluid the brakes felt and sounded worse then when I brought the car in for service. Had to bring the car in five times before it was right. Garage staff ridiculed me when I brought the car back and joked about charging me an additional $1,000.00 for fixing the issue. There were no problems at all with my ABS before I brought my car to this garage. The first time I had ABS issues this garage honored their warranty and "fixed" the issue for no cost admitting they caused the problem. The second time my ABS broke the garage admitted the issue was the ABS harness but insisted they be paid to fix the issue rather than cover it on the warranty. These mechanics are the only people that touched my ABS system in the past four years. It's difficult to accept that they broke the ABS the first time, but not the second time. To top it all off I brought the car in to be inspected shortly after this garage replaced the brakes, rotors, and fluid. The garage's inspector asked me when the last time was that I replaced the brake fluids. Before I could say anything he told me that I should go ahead and replace the brake fluid. At this point the garage manager, who is well acquainted with my car and I, walks in and I say that the brake fluids had been replaced at this garage a month or so ago. The garage manager, clearly embarrassed, chimes in to tell the inspector that my brake fluids do not need to be replaced. In a huff the inspector walks away giving the manager and I a nasty look. A few months later I brought my other car in to be inspected. Surprise! The same inspector told me that I needed to have my brake fluids flushed. Needless to say I declined. Do not recommend. read more

I was already aware of some of the things that needed to be done, but simply wanted inspections done so that I could go about my day. I've been to this shop a few times and my experience with the team has been great especially the technicians; however, I have never had a pleasant experience when dealing with Swe. She is always unpleasant, and doesn't know how to communicate to a customer. I showed up 10 mins late to an oil change and asked to also get my tires rotated. She said "no time for tires you come back later" I said "ok no problem" and she gave me paperwork to fill out. After watching me complete the paperwork she told me "you're 15 mins late and we can't do the oil". The lack of customer service skills and disrespect from this person is what will keep me from going here. Now I'm at Jiffy Lube less than a mile away. Know the only reason I'm giving them 2 stars is because of Swe because she's horrible. She never checked with anyone in the shop she just made the decision and it was evident that the rest of the folks working there didn't agree, but rather than argue I just left. Oil changes take 15 mins but maybe she just doesn't like business. read more

Swe and the gang at Shell know be my name and always try to accommodate my busy schedule. If you make an appointment they will honor it, and will let you know if various options for a fix or repair. They always check the fluid level and the air pressure with each oil change. For a family of four this is essential and a trust builder. I went in recently because my car was misfiring. They ran a lot of diagnostics, replaced spark plugs and coils, and then when it didn't fix the problem, they took out the replaced items and didn't charge me- for the parts OR for their time. I even got a loaner car while they worked on it. Granted, it was a Saturn with a tape deck, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think they are honest hard-working guys. read more

My car needed an emission inspection and they took care of it! It failed three times and everytime I brought it back, they saw me in line and brought out the sensor so I wouldn't have to wait. I come her for my regular maintenance and their service is organized and friendly and informative. I would not normally provide a review just based on good service. I came here during the power outage in the Northern Virginia area. I came here simply for gas which, if you lived here, you would know was not easy. Many gas stations were not open, and those that were had long lines and were very unorganized. Cars were entering from all directions and there were jams everywhere. When I decided to come back to James Madison Shell, they had closed off one side of their entrance so that cars were able to enter only on Chainbridge Road. Then they had their employees direct traffic. They even told a car that had cut in front of everyone to get to the back of the line. Due to their customer serivce, getting gas for your car, was easy, as it should be, even in an emergency situation. They have gained another loyal customer! read more

Don't be frightened away bc this is a gas station repair shop! The service is great and affordable and HONEST!! I have brought several different cars in because I had questions about strange noises and the mechanics have looked at them for free and sometimes sent me on my way with free advice for a quick fix! They told me " I've had this problem before, happy to help and not going to rip you off by charging you for something easy to fix". Heads Up. Do not get your car inspected here. I made the mistake of coming here two years in a row and every single time, on all three of my vehicles, they made me buy a new gas cap to pass inspection. They would give me a cheap, crappy gas cap to replace the one that worked great. Three cars, multiple gas cap fails. Then in talking with a neighbor, she had the same thing. It's a sleazy practice and obviously a revenue stream for them. Makes me think that if they can't be trusted on the small things, then I would not take my car in for anything else, including gas. read more

The technicians are fair with their assessments and if there's anything that comes up with a checkup they don't make you feel like you have to fix anything right then and there but rather to keep it in mind. (Yesterday stopped at another place that had a new automated monstrosity that charged $.75) Kind gentlemen saw me at the pump and immediately came out to offer to help. Then I spotted the nail. Urg. Wow!!! I am impressed!!!! I brought My Jeep into James Madison Shell to have the oil change done and check the alignment because my front end was shaking at highway speeds, they called a hour after i dropped it off, they let me know the steering dampener was bad causing my jeep to shake at highway speeds, they fixed it, did a alignment and oil change. Then called me a little while later to let me know it was done. Let me tell you my jeep has not driven this good since brand new!!!!!! This place is top notch!!!!! I recently had my car taken to James Madison Shell. It had lost its brakes and check engine light was on. I was at first apprehensive since this is an old car. They traced the problem to a broken brake line which they replaced and replaced a faulty engine sensor. Service was quick and complete and my car was returned to me quickly. They also checked over the rest of the car to make sure it was safe. Very competent mechanics and excellent customer service. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking to have their car fixed right. read more

I have been coming here since I moved up here (6 months) and I've only gotten oil changes and my tires rotated here. However I think they do a great job especially when it comes to time. I brought my 3yr old car in for a state inspection which passed. Then I was told my battery had died and my immobilization system had locked due to the security feature. I pulled into the station with absolutely no issues with my car, passed a state inspection yet my battery does to the point it locks my immobilization system and needs to be towed out? After being towed to the dealer I was informed that my immobilization was not locked but actually completely fried. I paid a total of $1200 for the tow, new battery and new immobilization system. I went back to the manager at James Madison Shell and he proceeded to tell me they did nothing wrong and I had no proof to show him otherwise. He was rude, defensive and told me Honda's have a HUGE issue with immobilization systems and that it happens all the time. Don't bring your car here!!!!! They never told me my battery died, they charged it without my knowledge. When I returned to the manager he said to me his charging machine was wasn't working properly yet they proceeded to charge with their charging machine (which had issues according to the manager and a mechanic) and now not only is my battery dead but my immobilization system completely fried. I reached out to the company that owns the station Chalel to speak with someone and no response from them. read more

I've attempted to go here about 3 times, and the same thing always happens. James Madison Shell - Not recommended for inspection or emissions test. Management is disorganized, and staff is not properly trained. As a result, you sit in your car and wait in line forever for state inspection and emissions testing. Customer Service is not a priority here. I watched one staff member fumble around like they had no idea what they were doing. Please stay away from my car! Here are two other places just down the street that I have been to and recommend: Vienna Gas & Auto - The Korean fellas on the same side of the street, but further up across the street from Anita's New Mexico. #2 is the Thai fellas on Lee Hwy next to Best Tailoring across from the big Pan Am Micro Center shopping strip. I can't remember the name of it though. It has a gas station in front of it. Both of those will take inspection/emission walk ins, and can usually do it really quickly (my car is only a few years old though). read more

These folks are very customer friendly. I am giving them only two stars because their repair cost estimate was 2/3rds more than it cost me to get my vehicle repaired at another very reputable garage. Tom informed me that it would be 3,000.00 to get it out of there. I asked my fiance to call and see if this was correct. He called and behold, it was only 500.00 to get it out of there. Love this place! I have always used JM Shell for inspections and they have always been friendly, courteous, and timely. Today I had a maintenance issue where the front part of my minivan was basically falling off and dragging on the ground. I had to pickup kids for a carpool later that afternoon. I called to repair shops who told me they could see me in a few weeks. Then I called Shell and Rick (manager I think) was very friendly and told me to come in right away. I arrived 10 minutes later and they took my car immediately and had it fixed 15 minutes later. They told me it was an easy fix and didn't charge me a penny.
