Best Place to eat Mexican food north of Mexico....Traveling through Alaska State this summer in July we happened to be upon this beautifully decorated Mexican restaurant ...we were pleasantly surprised that Alaska State does also have Mexican food so north up from Mexico. We had a great time here ....Gilbert was absolutely very professional and polite with the service....the food was just great.... It was close to closing time for this restaurant when we showed up but they still let us in ....their staff was friendly and waited on us and did not rush us even thought it was late. I recommend Jalapeno's to all who crave a taste of Mexico up in Alaska. We are definitely coming back. read more

Cinco de Mayo will never be the same! A friend and I went to lunch to celebrate this wonderful holiday, ended up being a big mistake. Service was mediocre no real complaints. The problem came as we were leaving, and I decided to take one last sip of my diet coke. You know when you take a sip of your drink and you get a little piece of ice, you can swallow it or spit it back into your cup...well on this day I opted to spit it back. IT WASN'T ICE!!! IT WAS A BUG!! AND IT WAS IN MY MOUTH!!! After I regained my composure and my friend killed the unwelcome little black beetle bug, I let the staff know. The response "oh, I'm so sorry you know they are just everywhere, let me know next time you're here and I'll give you a discount." NO THANK YOU!! Side note..a friend of mine has seen them recycle chips! Yep you heard me right, you don't eat them they dump them back in the bin to be reused!! read more

We just recently moved to Eagle River and this is one of our favorite Mexican places to visit. The staff are so friendly, they provide fast service, and the food is excellent. Also, their margaritas are super tasty - even the house margaritas. We would much rather eat here than travel into Anchorage for food that is more expensive and less authentic. The carne asada in the special tacos is amazing - seasoned just like my husband's homemade chile con carne. I have been here several times and have always had a pleasant dining experience. What a great surprise! We quit coming here several years ago because of food quality. Last week we went and everyone had a great meal and our server was on point. I never order rice and beans, but having tasted off another plate, I will order their's. Beef taco and chx enchilada were nicely flavored, lots of meat and not overly salty. The positives: food was pretty decent, portions were large, and the server was very attentive. Negatives: the food was only pretty decent, slightly over priced, and the mirrored wall and some of the lighting looked like they were pulled from a dated bowling alley bar. The meal began with chips and salsa. The mild salsa was bland and runny, but the hot was thick and flavorful. We ordered a fiesta platter appetizer. I think the fryer might have been turned up too high because all of the fried items were over cooked and crunchy. My entree was the recommended mi favorito. The presentation was interesting in a pig shaped stone bowl. The base was a heap of shredded pork, but vegetables were in short supply. I found the top of the pork a bit dry and flavorless, but stirring the bowl brought up some juice and additional tastes. In all the whole experience was a bit lackluster. If I'm in the area around dinner time again I'll likely drive on as there are similarly, or lower, prices options with better food nearby. read more

We liked the spicy salsa (good flavor, but it wasn't spicy) and our server pleasantly complied with our requests for more. We found the regular salsa to be too sweat. The margaritas were boring, watery, and expensive given the quality. The Mi Favorito Molcajete was ok but the cheddar cheese quesadilla was unnecessary and burned on the bowl and the mozzarella cheese melted everywhere and also burned (and why not nice, traditional Mexican cheeses?). The pico de gallo and avocado that came with the beans and rice tasted and looked like they had sat out for hours in a hot kitchen, and despite trying to keep them out of my leftovers, I failed to get it all and had to throw the rest of the meal out as they quickly spoiled and contaminated the rest. That's a real shame given how expensive everything was. My fella had the Camarones Con Crab and thought it was "better than ok but not great" but overpriced. Given our love of Mexican food we'll give this place another go, but will skip the margaritas and stick to the basic dishes and see what we get. read more

Best mexican food we've found in AK. It's not as good as that in the lower 48 but it will do b/c it's in ER and there are very few options. Food is usually pretty good. Servers are friendly but be warned a Corona is like $5! There are many Mexican restaurants in Alaska. We were in Eagle River on business and had a coupon so we thought we'd try Jalapenos. The coupon got us there but the food will bring us back. Incredible tamales, moist and tasty. I've had too many super dry tamales which took water to wash down. Delightful flavor to the meat in the taco, spicy but not red chili powder spicy. Very good. The mini chicken chimi had flavorful chicken in it that tasted like pollo rojo. Best salsa I've had in Alaska!! They're a super clean restaurant decorated cheerfully. The food used to be a lot better than it is now. Last time I went there and ordered fajitas there was no flavor to any of it. That was the third trip in a row with subpar tasting food.The bartender Jerry is a great guy and been around him almost makes up for the food not being as good as it used to be. read more

The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one is because the food is good. I've been here before with my family and have had no problems. So the waiter brings us the "Complimentary Chips" and salsa. After we I received an emergency call and had to leave quickly, therefore I asked the waiter (Austin) if I get it to go. He said "Yeah I got you man". Relieved, I continue eating my "Complimentary" chips and salsa wait for my food. My check arrived before my food and he had charged me for my "complimentary" chips ( $8 for about twenty chips ), I asked him if he had made a mistake when he brought me my food. He said " it's only complementary for people who done in". I told him I had received an emergency call and asked that he would please understand and he said " it is what it is bro". All in all austins customer service skills are terrible and I will take my business to chepos.
