    Chicken and chorizo tacos
    Mitchell R.

Wandering down Main Street in Gloucester armed only with an appetite and a credit card, I stalked my next victim; someplace interesting for dinner. I knew I didn't want fried food and seafood here is always good but sometimes boring. I came across Jalapeno's on Main St and the place looked interesting. A nice colorful sign on the storefront led me to believe the same creativity would extend to the food. So I rolled in and camped outside at an outdoor table and was promptly greeted by a friendly waiter who greeted me with taco chips and Salsa. Different than what I am used to. The chips are thick and crunchy, they were fresh and had a nice texture. The salsa was unimaginative; chopped unripe tomatoes and a little onion and spice. Overall not great but ok. I ordered the had shell tacos with grilled chicken strips and ground chorizo. I also ordered a margarita which was pretty good. The tacos arrived quickly, service was excellent but the chicken was overcooked and dry. Flavors were not very interesting so I asked for some green sauce and that helped make the tacos more flavorful. The service was excellent throughout but the food was just ok and not very unique. Everything was fresh so no problem there, and I did finish my meal, which means it was good enough but not great. To be fair, this was my first visit to this restaurant and it was ok, good enough to visit again but a bit disappointing and not quite special. I did notice that lots of diners seemed to be repeat customers and that's a good sign. On the plus side the menu was extensive and the service was excellent. But there is room to turn good food into great food and I'm hoping that it happens. Give it a try and see what you think!

Nice, filling kids meal of approximately three bites of a quesadilla and an assload of stale tortilla chips. $8. Bye.
    Rachel B.

The food was fine for the most part--nothing to write home about but hey, cuisine choices here aren't the same as in a big city. But the prices and portions are stupid. A burrito with rice and beans on the side should never be $20. I've had plenty of burritos in my life and none has been over $15-and they usually come with more. But the kids meal is what really got my goat. Children are actually humans who need food. But my $8 cheese quesadilla kids meal was a pile of stale tortillas (cause what parent doesn't want a meal for their toddler composed of 80% chips?), some rice, and two tiny-ass pieces of quesadilla. You know how much it costs to just throw the whole damn tortilla in? Very, very little. In fact, what do they actually do with the other half? Save it for the next lucky customer? Just push the boat out and give the kid the entire quesadilla. My kids are picky bastards so I've ordered a lot of cheese quesadillas in the past couple years, including all over Gloucester. This is hands down the chintziest serving I've ever had. Oh, and no sour cream. I guess that would be extra. Luckily Tacos Lupita and Machaco should be open again now holiday Monday is over. This was my last resort and now I know it was for good reason.

    Margs.

As far as events, I would give HIGHLY recommend hosting here. The cost for the area was unbeatable, and the food and service was excellent. Let me break it down. We visited beforehand to try the food to make sure it was good to serve to our guests. We tried the bang bang shrimp, chicken tenders and calamari which were some of our potential options. The bang bang shrimp and the chicken tenders were absolutely delicious, but the calamari had absolutely no flavor. We were glad we tried it beforehand so we could make an informed menu decision. We reached out to begin booking about a year or so in advance. I will say, there were times throughout the planning process where my communications and emails went unanswered and I would have to send follow-ups to nudge for a reply. Other than that, our party went fantastically. We had about 120 people which was definitely maximum capacity. Its not the most visually pleasing room or lighting, but it did the job for what we needed. It got very hot in the room but we were able to open the windows which helped. The food was excellent and we could easily order more throughout the night if we needed it. We had cocktail shrimp as one of our items and the shrimp were enormous. We also had salads, charcuterie, bang bang shrimp, sliders, tenders, and more. The drinks were great and the bartenders and staff were so nice. Our party ended at 9 and most people left but we stayed until 10 with some of our friends to drink and dance and they didn't seem to mind at all. Overall it was a wonderful experience and the perfect start to our wedding weekend.

Right off the bat, the prices alone make Short & Main a tough place to recommend. $14 for two meatballs and a slice of bread, $17 for a cocktail, $13 for a mocktail, and $23 for the base Ricardo pizza - plus another $6 for a tiny portion of sausage- felt steep. If pizza is meant to be the star of the restaurant, it should be unforgettable. Instead, it was just... fine. It's hard for me to hone in on the special qualities of any of the food because frankly there wasn't any. Perfectly serviceable, but nowhere near worth the markup.

The dining area is dimly romantically lit. They have a nice bar area for a solo dining experience or for waiting before being seated. I love to have the menu highlighted local oyster Farms, and even listed the farmers for all of their offerings. We started our meal with an order of bread, salad, oysters, and meatballs, and chose the Ricardo pizza for our main course. Dinner concluded with the Basque cheesecake with lemon curd and an espresso. Definitively should have opted for the tiramisu. The oysters were fresh and briney, a highlight of our meal, being so close to the ocean. The rest of the meal was just OK. The Basque cheesecake was a bit bland and probably could not stand by itself, but the lemon curd and they Maldon salt flakes elevated the entire dish. We enjoyed ourselves for dinner and would definitely come again when we're in town next.

The restaurant is pretty big and the wait staff are really nice and friendly. The menu is good sized, reasonably priced for the portions and delicious. You can eat out on their deck or there's a nice view of the harbor. There are two bars and I imagine it gets pretty packed in the summer. I send people here when asked where to go for standard fish and chips fare and feel vindicated now that I've returned in the off season. On the negative side- the vibe is corporate- like you're eating in a hotel lobby in the Midwest. There was one piece of art that looked local and if not for that, you could have been anywhere. Not a damning criticism but also the music made me feel like I was in Ohio not Gloucester. Someone had the station on contemporary country and it was loud. Men singing about going home with drunk women with low self esteem and trying to win back custody of their kids- it's the worst vibe for me. I kept looking at the waitresses trying to determine which one I could pay to change it. If the food wasn't so good and the staff wasn't so nice I would have left. There were so few other customers compared to the other restaurants we passed by I wondered if it was because the music was the reason. There's a way to say "we are a working class hangout " without blasting music that glorifies heavy drinking and dim wits in the background. The restaurant owners have curated every other aspect of the experience- they should go to Oak to Ember or the Franklin at night and realize that the music in addition to the atmosphere makes it or breaks it.

The lobster was dry, gummy and the meat pieces were small and sparse. For $40, which is more than a lobster roll with 4 times the meat and 10 times the quality costs in Boston, it was a bit of a rip-off. On the positive side, the tater tots were great. They were crispy and served piping hot fresh. They probably came from a frozen bag, but they were made well. The fish chowder was not bad. Although the soup was not very rich and somewhat underseasoned, the fish seemed fresh and was flaky and tasty. Fries were not great (likely also from a bag, under seasoned, fast-food thin, and served lukewarm). The atmosphere may merit a visit for drinks, but food may be a gamble.
