Not great quality overall. Pizza is super greasy. Cheesesteak dry and flavorless. Iceberg lettuce in salads with brown on the edges. Subs are barely filled; turkey sub had literally one and a half pieces of turkey. Just ordered there because Uncle Frank's was closed. We ordered barbecue wings, instead they gave us plain chicken wings with duck sauce on the side. WTF? Why would I "accidentally" order plain wings with DUCK SAUCE? Mike's Place is open again with a pretty extensive menu. Loads of items, some very different from what they used to offer, are now available. I used to love their food and haven't had it for years. My mother found out they will deliver to Rockport so while I was visiting her on Saturday we decided to try out some of the new menu. It was difficult communicating with the woman answering the phone. In fact, we had to each try to speak with her and then call back as she quoted us around $8 for the total order and we knew that was wrong but she hung up while we tried to correct her initially... not a great start. Turns out, she had our order correct and we have no idea where the $8 price came from. The food took about an hour to come. They packed most of it in 1 bag that broke upon us trying to pick it up to bring in the house. The portions were huge and we felt like we got a lot of food for the $35 we spent. I wish I could say the food was good but the majority was very bleh to bad. I'm only giving two stars because my mother ordered the chicken kabob salad and despite it being mainly lettuce (1 cucumber...) she loved the dressing and chicken and used it for two meals. We tried the fried dough. So bland. And so hard. It didn't taste like what we expected at all and was a waste of money. My dish was a triple decker turkey sandwich that had a weird construction. Bacon, tomato and lettuce on the top then just a huge chunk of not so great tasting turkey in the middle. I think there was a little may and that was it. Not very tasty. The worst offender though had to be the cheesy fries. I have no idea how someone let that "dish" leave looking like it did. They took regular fries, threw them in a paper container and microwaved shredded cheese on the top to create a bland, greasy top layer of cheese on hard and greasy fries. So disgusting. They should be ashamed serving that to a customer. We will never go back which is unfortunate as I used to love them years ago. They need better quality control of the food leaving the store. read more

It's okay. However, about a month ago I ordered a chicken salad sub and the chicken salad had gone bad. I got it back to my place and because it would have been quite a bit of work to go back to give it back I ate it anyway. Luckily, I did not get a diarrhea attack from the funky tasting chicken salad. So I ordered again a few weeks later and asked them to make sure the chicken salad was fresh as the last time it had gone bad. This time it was good! Then just last weekend I ate there again and the chicken salad was on its way to being bad. It had started to go downhill. I don't know if I will keep ordering my Saturday lunch from them when I am in the Gloucester area. Plus, they are a bit on the expensive side. There are other sub shops that are probably better to order from in the area before you order from these people. read more

Classic pizza spot, no frills but what you'd expect. 45-60min delivery to Wingaersheek beach area. One time our delivery driver forgot our salads & he went back immediately to get them for us. Our family also likes that you can choose regular or sweet sauce as some of us like that & others don't. Lastly they have gluten free, which is awesome! read more

Their pizza is spot on, just the right combo of cheese to toppings to sauce and crust. The delivery person was polite and friendly both time, perfectly maintaining social distancing in these crazy times. Oh where do I start. I used to love this place but the last time I got food I felt horrible after. I won't be going back after using the only rest room in the place and NOT FINDING SOAP!! When I first moved to Gloucester, this place was great. The orders were always fast, almost no hold time, and the food was correct and always on time. For the last 4 orders, however, each and every order took *forever* to get placed (SERIOUSLY- 10 full minutes to place a delivery order?!?), the food was incorrect - few times utterly different from what we actually ordered, and the food arrived late. I don't know if this place is under new management, but they'd better get it together. It's obvious they folks they hire just DO. NOT. CARE. Too bad. Unfortunately, this place used to be good but now has gone downhill. The roast beef sandwich I had was well done and dry. Awful. Any respectable business would know better than to serve it. I, for one, will never be ordering from here again. I've had their food a few times- and it is mediocre at best. I was in a tough spot tonight and ordered their greasy, nasty food. However, Tonight pushed me over the edge- after being hung up on twice before completing my order (a small pizza and a salad) I was informed a delivery would be 30-45 mins (that's normal for a Saturday night-no big issue) I still have not received my order, almost two hours later. When I called and spoke to the person working the counter- I was first told they had no order for my phone number (even though they had no issue of charging my credit card), to then being told it would be there in 3-5 mins. When I called back to cancel the order (20 mins after being told it would be there in 5) and to speak to a manager- there was a simple apology- no effort to make it right- no effort to see what the status was. If the manager does not care about the consumer- it's easy to see why their staff is of poor quality. I mean- how hard can it be to cook a pizza and a salad- to not have it two hours later is ridiculous. I would avoid this place at all costs. It's easy to see why their star rating is so low. Poor staffing, greasy food, lack of punctuality etc. Whether you're in town visiting, or a local, this place should be avoided at all costs. At this point I'd rather starve than deal with unorganized chaos that is called "Mike's Place." read more

I ordered the Corn chowder and it tasted awful, almost like sugar was dumped into the broth. so I called, they asked the kitchen and they said they always make it that way! they did offer that we could order something else or get store credit toward our next order (using my phone number). Have been here about 5 times over the past 2-3 years. My last visit will be THE LAST!!! I ordered a large Eggplant Sub for two of us to share and a bag of chips. Was waiting in booth finishing an email when food was ready. I didn't stand up immediately when called...I overheard one worker say to another "That sub goes to that fat guy over there" (pointing at me). Really bad service lately. I live literally less than a minute away and for some reason it has taken over an hour for our food to be delivered lately. Our food has been cold and the last time (last week), I tried calling to check on the order (that took an hour and 17 minutes to deliver) and they wouldn't answer because it was past closing. Well... If they still have deliveries out they should answer the phone... For issues like this. Called the next day, asked to talk to the manager and someone answered... I explained myself and then after he says "well the manager isn't here so there's nothing I can do". I used to love this place. Used to take 20 minutes less than the expected time. Tons of freshly grilled chicken not and bacon. Really great salad. My husband had the large steak bomb and he was also pleased. I've been eating food from Mike's since the beginning of 2007. I've always gotten delivery or takeout from them. They are a Gloucester institution. Even though I do not actually live in Gloucester myself, everyone I know who does (including my girlfriend) gets Mike's. Here, from my own experience, is why they kick ass: 1) They offer a huge variety of subs that are very filling. My girlfriend always gets the small cheese-steak sub and she really enjoys it. It's a very good portion for that size. I myself have gotten the large barbecue steak tip and the large eggplant parmesan. Each one was very tasty, very delicious and filling, although for a large I would have expected a bit more. Then again, I like to pig out, so maybe I'm not one to make sound judgement here. 2) They offer all different types of pizza and it is here I can make excellent judgement as pizza is my favorite food hands down. They have a huge party size pizza that is basically a square sheet of 24 slices great for parties or large groups. It is just awesome and every single one I have sampled has been delicious and left me craving more. There are various specialty pizzas you can get from Mike's and I must admit I have not tried many, but the one I have eaten the most is the barbecue chicken. Strange, on their regular pizzas it's not that great, but on their sheet pizza is where it shines. Overall, there really isn't any barbecue sauce and the chicken has only a grilled taste, so the "barbecue" moniker doesn't really apply. I am also a big believer in the plain cheese pizza being a true test of a pizza joint's pizza making ability, and here Mike's cheese is on par, but nothing special. Where they do excel, albeit tremendously, is their sweet sauce pizza, known as the Gloucester Favorite. Personally, I'm a huge sweet sauce fan, but adding in the fact that you can get a large cheese Gloucester Favorite starting at $6 and change just makes it the best valued pizza I have ever had. It is fantastic. Get it with pepperoni and BAM!, you're in heaven. 3) Their calzones are ridiculous. You get a small and you will have leftovers. Even I can't finish one and I would never attempt to. It's served almost like Chicago-style deep-dish pizza with out any sauce, or maybe more accurately like a dessert pie with a layer of melted cheese on top. You get a side of marinara sauce for dipping. They offer different sizes, which get much bigger and pricier, but the overall eating experience is pure joy. I have tried many calzones on the North Shore and Mike's has the best. 4) They offer tons of appetizers. I have only tried the mozzarella sticks and I get them all the time with their salty, gooey goodness. My girlfriend has gotten their fries on many occasions and they can be very good, other times disappointing as if they're using a totally different type of fry. 5) They have lots of pasta dishes, but I've only had two of them: the chicken broccoli alfredo (amazing) and the chicken parmesan (blah). Now, where Mike's really impresses is the pasta special they offer Mondays through Wednesdays. For only $4 and change, you get a huge portion of either the chicken broccoli or chicken parmesan with a side of garlic bread. You will have leftovers. With takeout or delivery the meal is served in a nice plastic container with a snap-on cover. Just wash it out after you're done eating all the food and you have yourself a perfect container for future leftovers. So, a few weaknesses, but the strengths far outweigh them. Don't hesitate; order Mike's the next time you want takeout comfort food in Gloucester. I've even convinced my good friend in Beverly to get takeout from them and that's a 40-minute drive round trip. read more
