Brunch in Portland, Oregon... After I read reviews about Portland's Chinatown, I searched for a dimsum place outside of Chinatown and found Jade Rabbit I liked the name of the place and saw that they had two kinds of rabbit-shaped dimsum! Another cool thing is that their menu is vegan... that means that I don't have to worry about dairy products that give me pain. We found free street parking about a half a block away and waited for Jade Rabbit to open at 11am. We didn't have reservations, but we're seated immediately. The decor was great! I enjoyed looking at all of the Rabbit figurines! The furniture was colorful and the convenient restroom had interesting decorations, too! The service was okay. Some items were not available and our server recited the list that included chow funn. Shucks! She came back later and said that the chow funn was, in fact, available... yay! Our server seemed a bit nervous as her hand shook and placed the special menu upside-down... LOL! We won't bite you! She recommended the Ube Jam drink - it was made with coconut cream... yes! The chow funn was a bit bland. We added some soy sauce. The Puto Pao Bunny Bao had an unusual flavor - maybe the brown sugar can be omitted because the black garlic and vegan pork might be fine without it? The Jade Rabbit Dumplings also could be more savory. Something was off... and the filling was a bit sparse. Anyway, maybe we could have ordered better, but we got what we wanted! I'm married to a Chinese American, so we eat a lot of dim sum, but I'm usually pretty limited in what I can enjoy. It was such a wonderful surprise to find a place where I can eat anything on the menu! We ordered several dishes, and the standouts were the chili wontons, char siu bao, and siu mai -- all absolutely delicious. The only item that fell a bit short was the special chow fun, which my husband and I both found a little bland. The staff was kind, and the ambiance was casual and fun. I went to this restaurant as part of a FinCon dinner club. It's all vegan and I was able to Rey a few things. First, the crab Rangoon was delicious and super cute. Second, the mapo tofu was delicious and very spicy. The flavor was on point! I forgot the name of the kimchi dish but it was okay. It was much better with the sauce. I had the most intentional time dining here by myself. To start off I was warmly welcomed and informed about the added gratuity for all staff to earn the same tip. Love that for this restaurant. Next, The tea service was a dream. They took the time to show me how to pour the tea. The way it was presented was such a special process to really enjoy the taste of the tea. A reservation is required!!! I was surprised that my friend and I were even allowed to eat here. We didn't have a reservation nor did we know we needed one. When we walked in for dinner, we were immediately questioned about reservations and when told no that they don't have any open tables. I felt a bit disappointed, but luckily the bartender offered us sit at the bar. The bar was opened. The restaurant was partly empty. The restaurant gradually filled with more guests as time went on. I noticed a party of two turned away because they didn't make a reservation and the bar was full by the time they arrived. The bartenders immediately took our orders. We got the mocktails, jade rabbit dumpling, one appetizer, and veg pork dumplings. The mocktails were brought out quickly. They were refreshing and tasty. The appetizer was okay, but bland and paired with sweet oily based sauce. With the sauce, it tasted better. Jade Rabbit was colored green and was tiny compared to the veg pork one. It was flavorless, but the veg pork dumplings was savory, sweet, and the breading was soft. It tasted 360 degrees better than the actual jade rabbit. Go figure. I had high hopes for this restaurant, but a tad letdown to mediocre food. Jade Rabbit was on my "to try" radar for years. Maybe a bad night, but I don't know. I had been wanting to try this restaurant for months and decided to finally go for my birthday, but the food, and especially the service, did not live up to the hype. In fact, it was some of the worst service I'd ever experienced. We had a reservation and were seated quickly, but that's where the good service ended. After maybe 10 minutes someone came and asked if we'd been helped. We placed our drink orders and she brought us a tiny pitcher of water that didn't even fill half the glasses for our party of 5. When our drinks came out, we placed our food orders and asked for more water, but I think she forgot. Our food took a very long time, but that was understandable for how much food we ordered. They did also mention they bring it all out at once, but that left some dishes hot and others semi-cold. We were able to remind her about the water, which she brought. The ragoon was very good and had a ton of filling. The adobo was just okay. I barely took a few bites, but I've had better vegan chicken at home. My friend didn't finish his congee, saying it didn't have enough toppings leaving it a bit bland. As we began eating we realized we were missing one of the dishes we ordered, but we couldn't even ask about it because our server was MIA. She never came to check on how everything was or refill our water that was empty again. We literally didn't see her again until we finished our entire meal! My friend ordered the congee, which typically comes with a soup spoon, but they only gave us chopsticks. He literally dug a plastic spoon out of his bag and used it because he had nothing to eat his soup with and no one to ask. That's pretty embarrassing for a place this pricey.. When she finally came back we had been done eating for probably 10-15 minutes. We ordered dessert (and more water..). The water was quick, but the desserts took another 20 minutes or so. The Pandan kiwi Spongecake was flavorful, but so dry! Spongecake should be light and fluffy, but this felt like it was pre assembled and improperly stored. The Ube crème brûlée was amazing, but lacked any sort of presentation. Once we finally got our bill (you guessed it), we couldn't even find our server to give her our card. After another 10 minutes or so, we spotted her at the bar scrolling on her phone. My husband went up to her with his card and asked if we could pay. Keep in mind, this place charges an automatic 22% tip - there is no incentive to provide good service and it shows. Dinner ended up taking nearly 3 hours, a majority of which was just sitting with empty water glasses and plates. Overall, I would not recommend this place, as the food and service does not match the price tag. read more

If I was vegan I would rate this a 4 as I found many of the flavors mirroring non vegan dim sum. Some of the textures felt more gelatinous vs the non vegan counterpart, but there were definitely some bright spots. Turnip cakes- delicious with great texture. Who knew? Char siu bao also had a nice flavor and texture. Less successful- Chili oil wontons- didn't care much for the chili oil. Wontons were decent but have had many non vegan chili oil wontons that are way better. Lo mai gai had a decent flavor, but was gelatinous goop. Overall I was pleasantly surprised and happy to see the vegan in our group happily munching away, Just on another side note, there's an automatic gratuity of 22% added to all bills regardless of party size. The service was atrocious so I won't say much more about this automatic tip except that the tip should reflect the service. We sat outside. The inside it quaint, there are two different sections for seating on the inside. When we arrived at 3:30 there was only one couple dining in, and us, out. Vegan dim sum!! Oh this food is so good, I would never expect it from the outside which just looks like a distillery but come on in and enjoy the heck out of tea and bunny buns. Oh, make a reservation first! Limited seating fills up fast. Ok, the bunny buns while adorable weren't the best part of the meal. Super cute but a little heavy on the bun and light on filling, as to be expected from a novelty shape. And didn't come with a dipping sauce, but the chili oil from another dish was great with them. Four of us feasted here and I sadly did not get a picture of most items before we dove in. The menu includes pictures of each item as well as descriptions which was very helpful, especially with a table laden with steamer baskets. Exceptionally delicious: gailan (steamed Chinese broccoli topped with sauce and crunchy bits, siu mai (steamed dumplings), char siu bao (bbq filled buns). Don't skip the chili oil wontons! We were finally able to make it to Jade Rabbit after hearing amazing stories over the years. Their new space looks really beautiful and straight out of a studio ghibli movie! We were a little thrown by the prices but once we started eating everything, it made a little more sense. Do I wish the prices were lower? Yes but if that's what it takes to make this food so delicious, I'll accept it. We were a party of four adults + one child, and got 4 small plates and 4 big bowls. That was just enough food for all of us. Among the appetizers, the fried wonton stole the show for me - beautifully crisp and had the most succulent filling. My entree was the mapo tofu and Jade Rabbit brought the spice! I was tearing up slightly but could not stop eating it. This is easily the best mapo tofu I've had in a good while. Other dishes ordered were the noodles and congee which got rave reviews as well! The drinks were expensive but the rizz fizz (a lychee matcha concoction) was easily one of the freshest drinks I've ever had. The only letdown was the ube crème brûlée - while the ube was on point the crème brûlée consistency was off. This is definitely a hidden jewel. Parking can be difficult, and you really should get reservations, but all of this is worth it! And for anyone concerned about whether they will like vegan Chinese food, I think my carnivorous friends would eat most of these dishes and never know there was not meat in them. My friend, who is a vegan, brought me here for a late lunch. as recommended, we each ordered three of the dim sum items to share. We ordered the Darkside noodles, chili oil wontons, rangoons, gailan, wood ear mushrooms, and sui mai. Because we both knew we wanted to have the Ube crème brûlée, we just had Water to drink rather than one of the delicious sounding cocktails. The food is served all at the same time, normally, although our noodles took a few minutes longer. I'm glad they brought the other foods out first while the noodles were being finished, because otherwise the other items would have been cool instead of warm. Everything was amazingly delicious. My friend adores the noodles although they are a bit spicy for her. I thought they were perfect! The black garlic sauce is amazing on them. Love this dim sum spot! It's all vegan, but even meat lovers will enjoy it. We honestly couldn't tell it was plant-based meat. They also have several gluten-free options as well. The Hubs & I shared some wontons, the bunny Bao (almost too adorable to eat!), the turnip cakes, and the grilled radicchio salad. Everything was absolutely delicious! For the wontons, I recommend getting them with the chili sauce on the side, as we did, because that sauce is super spicy and a little goes a long way. Their desserts looked really tempting, too, but we were stuffed. The service by the entire team was so upbeat, friendly, and helpful. We had only been to Jade Rabbit once when it shared a space with Aimsir Distillery and we loved it. We assumed we would have a similar experience at the new location. WRONG. Horrible experience. First, there is no AC and we went on a hot day. Second, it looks and feels very dirty inside- unappetizing. Third, two menu items were unavailable. Fourth, our cocktails were served at the same time as our food- that's a first. This was also at a very slow time when several employees are standing around just talking. Fifth, the food was okay at best. Hard to judge the food when you are uncomfortable due to the humidity and unclean vibe. On top of it, they charge an automatic 22% gratuity. The service was awful- from the host who has zero people skills, to the server forgetting part of our order and getting our drinks at the same time as our food. Gorgeously appointed with tall ceilings and an art deco vibe, this space was a treat to dine in. We enjoyed the seasonal old fashioned and 9 different dishes. It's best to eat family style and order a bunch of little dishes with be larger course to split. Apparently, all the food here is vegan, which was very interesting. We placed our order and had a bit of a wait before it finally arrived. Unfortunately, one of our orders never arrived, so we ended up canceling it. The food and the tasting was ok, but the food presentation was pretty. The jade rabbit really surpassed expectations. The atmosphere, drinks, and food were fantastic. My favorites were the wontons, shumai, the greens, and ube crème brûlée. My carnivore friend wasn't too excited to go to a vegan dinner sum place but left wowed. He wouldn't realize that it was vegan. The alcohol from the in house distillery is also on point. A few reasons for 4 stars though. The bean curd wrap was pretty chewy although the inside was great. Honestly would have been better without the wrap. The service was very slow even though it was pretty empty. It took a while for the waitress to take our order and food was slow to come out. They also would only take the order all at once so we couldn't order a few dishes to start. This defeats the purpose of dim sum in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of the mochi donut.
