Patacón y Yucca fritas
Karen K.

It's been about five years since we have lived in Miami and had Venezuelan food. This was super good! I am not vegan but honestly, I didn't miss the meat at all. We had the patacón and the yucca fritas and it was delicious. The plantains of the patacón were perfectly cooked and the filling was flavorful. We live in the neighborhood so we will definitely be back!

I have been wanting to try El Salto for a while now. Definitely did not disappoint. We had a poyo patacon it was shareable or if you're really hungry it is so filling. The poyo is well seasoned and the guasaca sauce is so flavorful. We also had an empanada filled with soyrizo that was very delicious (the pastry was almost too greasy). The carne asada arepa was large and the filling was extremely flavorful. The maduros were sweet and well made. I would order everything again. Fortunately the seating area is directly across from the cart and there is a decent amount of seating. The cart pod is unassuming but it is cozy.

As a non-vegan, this is some of the best food I've found in Portland. Absolutely impressed, and I've been back several times since they moved to Carts on Foster. Plus the owners are super friendly!

New to the Bite on Belmont, I was so stoked to try El Salto and they do not disappoint! I had the Arepa de Pollo con Queso, Tostones and Aguapanela, all of which were incredibly tasty! The Arepa was generously filled, flavorful and super moist, and the tostones were perfectly salted, crisp (and their garlic sauce is awesome). The Aguapanela is tart and refreshing (and dangerously chuggable). The owners are super sweet and gave awesome recommendations for my first visit. I feel honored that they're sharing all of their tasty regional treats with us! Plus, they have the cutest cart puppers! 110% would and will recommend this spot, even if you aren't vegan! It's tasty food made with lots of love & care. PS. Don't sleep on any of their Guava/Cheese dishes!! A delicious and (for me) unexpected combo, I'm stoked to try more!

Empanada!

Visited their new location on Foster. Excellent food and great recommendations as always!

An absolute portland vegan staple run by the most amazing and sweetest folks! You will not regret eating here!

Patacon de Carne Asada

The food is amazing! We had patacones, and arepas. The reina pepiada arepa was the best!! My spouse is Venezuelan and she loves the place so much we had to come here for her birthday. It's a plus that is vegan but there is no sacrifice in taste at all!

Great all vegan fare place. I recommend the empanada. We also ordered a patacon, which was a sandwich in between two fried plantains. The arepas were good as well.

Purely unique, excellently prepared and utterly satisfying. Let's discuss each reason for praise. When I say it's unique, I mean that in three ways. One being that Venezuelan food is already uncommon as it is. Factor in that it's vegan at the same time, and it's a rarity to find even if you look throughout the entire US. Secondly, the style itself is distinctive. Paola goes for authentic tasting versions of her people's food. She's trying to have you take a bite out of Venezuela, and won't sacrifice taste because it's vegan. So, where as a restaurant may be boring and just use naturally vegan ingredients like a Black Bean Arepa with no meat or cheese, El Salto gives you the full package. It stays hearty, gooey, tender, juicy, and flavorful. If places do somehow manage to do a vegan Arepa with a meat/cheese option, it's more than likely a name brand like Impossible. Nothing wrong with Impossible inherently, but it probably means they aren't enriching their meat with deep flavoring and just the right texture like Paola does. She makes all her meats from scratch, and her labor of love is what sets her apart from competitors who offer less interesting, more copy-and-paste vegan options (which wouldn't exactly wow a typical client, let alone a food critic). A good analogy would be like carnival food vs restaurant quality. Where one reels you in mostly by milking your brain's chemicals, another is clearly winning you over from a longer check-list of qualities that make food satisfying. From the perfect seasoning, to a great feel when you bite into it, a fulfilling sensation in your stomach that doesn't make you feel like you'll be hungry in two hours, and yet not too overwhelming in any one category of judgement. Thirdly, it's unique to have so many options of both the kinds of different foods, as well as different variations of the main entrees. El Salto offers a total of FIVE Arepas: Chicken, beef, chorizo, cheese, AND a chicken/cheese combo. That's plenty to get addicted to. They also have four kinds of patacones, and four sides. PLUS, if you're lucky enough to come in when she's doing a special, you'll have even more options. A little Trupia told us that the tequeños are becoming a regular item soon, so look out for that! As for the excellent preparation, well, take a look at any pictures of her food and you'll see an outstanding and mouthwatering result. The presentation is simply worthy of photo-taking. Please stop by to pick up her incredible cooking. Seriously, you'll be impressed by how thoughtful her creations are from start to finish. When the word is out about El Salto, you're going to want to brag about how she was your favorite before it was cool.

Chorizo arepa, patacon and tostones

Great new Venezuela pop up! The food is fresh and absolutely amazing. Everything is vegan but don't fret if you love me at - my meat obsessed partner loved the faux chorizo arepa and soy curls. Also can't pass up getting the tostones!

The food is delicious . Best vegan meat i have tasted and had. I Cannot wait to try more. The location is good with parking near by. Great service and food. Plenty of seating, nice and peaceful sitting there on a sunday. I had the arepa SO good. My non vegan friend really enjoyed the patacon guisado. Super good as well. Highly recommended

The people are incredibly kind, personable, and welcoming, with such positive energy. There's a real human connection here--you can tell they truly care about what they do, and you leave feeling fed in more ways than just food. And the food absolutely deserves the praise, too. The chicken empanada was perfectly crispy and full of flavor, and the chicken arepa was warm, cheesy, and so comforting, with tender shredded chicken that just hit. Everything tasted intentional and made with love. Even the sauce on the side brought everything together so well. I would honestly pay double for this experience--not because it's expensive (it's very reasonable), but because the food, the people, and the overall vibe are just that good. Beautiful food, beautiful people, beautiful company. They deserve the world. Highly recommend.

Based on this visit, I would not recommend them at all.

There were many large seating area available. One main cedar table was a big attraction. There is a fireplace with a table by it We got a table. I ordered a Borgona, fruit puree juices mix with Sprite. Never had one, but sounded really good. It came and it was delicious and fruity for a mocktail. We ordered a shrimp ceviche and octopus skewers to start out with. The Shrimp Ceviche was very delicious and it was something that I was very happy to share it with my friends. It was a big portion of shrimp cocktail with salsa on the bottom and these large sized blue chips. It was so good that we ate it quickly. Octopus skewers was a tad charred. Yet very delicious especially if you eat it with the pineapple together. Brings out the flavor of the pineapples quite well. We ordered the Pork Belly Tacos and Mole Shrimp Tacos which came in 3. I absolutely loved street tacos filled with good fresh ingredients. And both of these hot the spot. The pork belly was an absolute great flavor of the pork belly. The Shrimp was delicious. Cook perfectly and easy to devour quickly. DeFuego Nachos had Jalapenos. But wasn't listed. The nachos were delicious and it was quickly devoured. Wings came in 4 wings with garlic parmesan with carrots and celery and ranch on the platter. Heavily garlic on the wings yet very delicious. Half wedge salad was a surprise how much there is in the salad. A lot of fresh veggies there with cherry tomatoes and sliced radishes in it. I had a absolutely fun experience celebrating my birthday here. DeFuego had Happy Hour from 3pm to 6pm, seven days out of the week. Seems the Happy Hour here is very popular. You have 21 appetizers to choose from on the Happy Hour Menu. There are Mocktails, and any drinks you want available. Definitely will come back again.

Shoot. Last night I took my boyfriend here to celebrate a special event & we left so disappointed!…read moreWe got there at 7:15 & we were stuck there for over 2 hours! I ordered 2 things and both came out wrong. Our waitress spoke very loudly and we could hear her having long personal conversations with people a couple tables away from us for 10+ minutes at a time, several times. While we waited for her, we ran out of water a few times and I had to ask for more. It was over an hour before our order was even taken. We did flag her down to order an appetizer, brussel sprouts with cheese on the side due to a dairy allergy, but... the sprouts came out with cheese on them. They corrected this fairly promptly, but then we sat for another 45 minutes before our order was actually taken. I ordered a steak as "somewhere between medium & medium well" and she correctly repeated my order back to me "medium/medium well." When the steak came out, it was WELL well done. Like, burnt. I wanted to send it back, but I didn't want to deal with the embarrassment or have to wait even longer for food. We were about an hour & 45 minutes into dinner by the time we got our food. I was so disappointed! I also wanted to get dessert to celebrate the occasion but the service was SO slow that we had to cancel our after-dinner plans. We ordered it anyway & requested the check promptly, giving up on our plans for the rest of the evening. We were only a party of 2, we arrived early for our reservation, & we watched several larger parties come and go while we waited for our order to even be taken. It was a Wednesday night and not overly busy, there were several empty tables, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. We were also seated at an odd table next to the kitchen with a small divider between us and the staff. It was noisy and I even heard 2 staff members exchange a joke about how someone else had left & said they'd never come back. They laughed about it. I wish I had the guts those people had to get up & leave! I've never once left less than a 20% tip and felt immense guilt not tipping well, but after experiencing the poor service then also hearing the staff blatantly acknowledge it & not care.... I was appalled. The Hilton bought the hotel attached to De Fuego and I'm shocked. This was a Monarch hotel before and I'd assume that the Hilton's standards would be higher but the service and quality here have tanked hopelessly low since the acquisition. I had a similar experience at The Underground before it closed. I've learned my lesson & won't come here for a special occasion again.

That's saying something! The gentleman working there was very friendly, and kept speaking to me in what sounded like Spanish (I clearly don't speak Spanish). He soon realized I had little to no idea what he was saying, started laughing and apologized after switching to English.
