We were here for the ramen cart next door, but unfortunately it was closed (for unknown reason). Frustrated and hungry, we turned to La Arepa for some deliciousness! Since I'd never tried Venezuelan food, I decided to turn to the picture menu for extra information. I ended up getting Pabellón Criollo and my bf got a Arepa to go. My Pabellón Criollo was good, I like the plantains with the rice, bean and pulled beef. I also like my rice topped with the egg. While I do like my dish, I was really impressed by the Arepa! The grilled cornmeal bread has this airy, chewy and crunchy texture that totally surprised me. I was hooked but I didn't want to eat my bf's entire sandwich... Next time I'm going to order 3 Arepa. Yes, that's my plan!

I had a pabellón arepa. It was so delicious and really filing. Definitely worth $10. And the person who took my order was super helpful. He said one arepa would be enough and recommended I try it with the garlic sauce! The garlic sauce was a perfect compliment to my meal. Love the barley pod food carts.

Probably closer to a 3.5, but workers were nice, so I'll bump it up. Honestly though, my biggest issue is the portion of food you get for what you pay for. I compared it to other food I got, and this was meager and skimpy. As for the actual food itself. The Beef arepa was pretty good. The meat could have used a little more flavor, but the corn meal bread is pretty dope tasting.. I also like that when you check in, you get a lil something to show appreciation. You get choice of beans or "salad." I got the salad, which turned out to be cole slaw. I'm not a big cole slaw fan, so it was whatever for me. However it was nice to get it free. Overall, I was curious to try Venezuelan food since I've never had it. I do like the arepa, but think $5 for what I got would be a better price for it. If you've ever wanted to try Venezuelan food, check this spot

Wow. Blew me away. So delicious. Got #9, the avocado, plantains, beans and shredded beef one. Pretty to look at and just wholesome flavors. Tasty, crispy but soft, masa "buns." So yummy all together. Pricy for $9, but the flavors are real! The salad was also pretty good - Venezuelan cole slaw. $3

Good, but price to portion is no value

This cart has lasted, yet I rarely see any customers. The Arepas take ten minutes to make and you can taste the freshness. I've been satisfied with the few varieties I tried, today it was a tilapia mixture that popped with flavor. It's cliche to complain about prices (there are so few places that scream value), here the price to portion ratio is poor. Most would probably need two Arepas to satisfy as a lunch so including a drink you're at $20. I'll go for something indoor for that amount of coin. They offer your choice of creative hot sauces which is a nice touch. Unfortunately, I wasn't partial to the buttermilk one. The lady was very friendly. Right across the path I often order one of the best breakfast burritos around for $6.50. It's filling enough that I often split it into two meals, so the price ratio is super.

Ultra-flavorful Venezuelan favorites like arepas are served up in the unassuming food cart in a pod in North East. This truck, manned by one guy, who is so friendly and has incredible sweat equity, is dishing out really great options like the #9: an arepa with black beans, plantains, shredded beef, avocado and more. Plus, he can recommend salsa for the different dishes on the menu out of the 4 he makes. Both of the salsas I ate with my arepa, which was huge and initially too hot to pick up, went really beautifully with the components. It was savory, salty, sweet, crunch, chewy, all of the things. I really want to try more menu items like some of the plated meals that I recognized. The wait time is really long during meal times, but just grab a beer at Baerlic and chill out until it's ready.

I've always wanted to try Arepas but have never had the opportunity until today. I ordered the Pabellón Arepa, Plátano Frito, and the Quesillo. Everything was super delicious. The arepa it's self reminded me of these fried quesadillas my mom makes. The fillings were great and the shredded beef was seasoned well. The Quesillo really reminded of flan. This place has set the bar for arepas and I'm looking forward to my next trip to PDX to eat these again.

There's a real human connection here--you can tell they truly care about what they do, and you leave feeling fed in more ways than just food. And the food absolutely deserves the praise, too. The chicken empanada was perfectly crispy and full of flavor, and the chicken arepa was warm, cheesy, and so comforting, with tender shredded chicken that just hit. Everything tasted intentional and made with love. Even the sauce on the side brought everything together so well. I would honestly pay double for this experience--not because it's expensive (it's very reasonable), but because the food, the people, and the overall vibe are just that good. I ordered a Borgona, fruit puree juices mix with Sprite. Never had one, but sounded really good. It came and it was delicious and fruity for a mocktail. We ordered a shrimp ceviche and octopus skewers to start out with. The Shrimp Ceviche was very delicious and it was something that I was very happy to share it with my friends. It was a big portion of shrimp cocktail with salsa on the bottom and these large sized blue chips. It was so good that we ate it quickly. Octopus skewers was a tad charred. Yet very delicious especially if you eat it with the pineapple together. Brings out the flavor of the pineapples quite well. We ordered the Pork Belly Tacos and Mole Shrimp Tacos which came in 3. I absolutely loved street tacos filled with good fresh ingredients. And both of these hot the spot. The pork belly was an absolute great flavor of the pork belly. The Shrimp was delicious. Cook perfectly and easy to devour quickly. DeFuego Nachos had Jalapenos. But wasn't listed. The nachos were delicious and it was quickly devoured. Wings came in 4 wings with garlic parmesan with carrots and celery and ranch on the platter. Heavily garlic on the wings yet very delicious. Half wedge salad was a surprise how much there is in the salad. A lot of fresh veggies there with cherry tomatoes and sliced radishes in it. I ordered 2 things and both came out wrong. Our waitress spoke very loudly and we could hear her having long personal conversations with people a couple tables away from us for 10+ minutes at a time, several times. While we waited for her, we ran out of water a few times and I had to ask for more. It was over an hour before our order was even taken. We did flag her down to order an appetizer, brussel sprouts with cheese on the side due to a dairy allergy, but... the sprouts came out with cheese on them. They corrected this fairly promptly, but then we sat for another 45 minutes before our order was actually taken. I ordered a steak as "somewhere between medium & medium well" and she correctly repeated my order back to me "medium/medium well." When the steak came out, it was WELL well done. Like, burnt. I wanted to send it back, but I didn't want to deal with the embarrassment or have to wait even longer for food. We were about an hour & 45 minutes into dinner by the time we got our food. I was so disappointed! I also wanted to get dessert to celebrate the occasion but the service was SO slow that we had to cancel our after-dinner plans. We ordered it anyway & requested the check promptly, giving up on our plans for the rest of the evening. We were only a party of 2, we arrived early for our reservation, & we watched several larger parties come and go while we waited for our order to even be taken. It was a Wednesday night and not overly busy, there were several empty tables, so I'm not sure what the hold up was. We were also seated at an odd table next to the kitchen with a small divider between us and the staff. It was noisy and I even heard 2 staff members exchange a joke about how someone else had left & said they'd never come back. They laughed about it. I wish I had the guts those people had to get up & leave! I've never once left less than a 20% tip and felt immense guilt not tipping well, but after experiencing the poor service then also hearing the staff blatantly acknowledge it & not care.... I was appalled. The Hilton bought the hotel attached to De Fuego and I'm shocked. This was a Monarch hotel before and I'd assume that the Hilton's standards would be higher but the service and quality here have tanked hopelessly low since the acquisition. I had a similar experience at The Underground before it closed. I've learned my lesson & won't come here for a special occasion again.
