The place is beautiful but the food is not the best at all. The calamari was delicious but it did not come with merinera sauce like it was suppose to we had to ask for the sauce a few times before we got it. I got the salmon which was ok but a bit dry. My boyfriend got a burger which was ok until he bit into something that tasted like mold.. they were nice to take it off the bill. We ordered the Calamari ($12) which was really good. Not a fan of the sauces so we ordered cocktail sauce. We had the chicken ($19.00) which was juicy and good. We had Osso Bucco that had so much meat that we took 1/2 of it with us. The pork was a huge portion and really good. Not the normal Osso Bucco cooked in the rich sauce but we would order it again. We also had the Filet sandwich ($18.00) that was big enough to share. We don't like sitting in the lobby of the hotel to eat. There is a great restaurant that they only use for breakfast that is more fitting for the Portola Hotel. Having guests sitting in the lobby is crazy. Our server Colleen did a great job. read more

If you are wanting a good cocktail, then this would be a 5 Star review. But if you want even decent food or decent service, then it would be a zero star review. My lemon drop may have been the best I've ever had. And the patrons at the bar also seemed happy. But the food...room temperature and bland and greasy. The salad dressing was definitely not house made-it had that corn syrup, thick sweet taste. The calamari-kinda cold when it arrived. And SO greasy! Gross. I've never worked in food service, so someone else may understand, but when would food that is cooked and named "skillet" be served barely at room temp? The server kept disappearing. For a long time. When she first brought me a lemon drop the glass was cracked. Not her fault, but I was waiting for a long time, looking around for her so I could get a new glass. Finally after at least 7 minutes I got up and went to the bar. The bartender didn't come right away, and I felt bad, so I went and sat down again and waited. She eventually arrived and took care of the glass right away. Then disappeared again. I say YUCK to this restaurant. read more

The restaurant wasn't too busy but we waited close to 40 minutes before our server took our order (only after taking another table's order-and they had just been seated 5 minutes prior) The food was okay, nothing really worth noting. Took a while for them to bring out our check and it was overall a very shoddy experience. I spent 70 something dollars here. Had the calamari appetizer. NOT worth the money at all. Though it was crispy and super delicate, it was cooked well, but it was just way too oily. I loved every minute of my meal at Jacks at Portola Hotel! We visited on a quiet, off-season night and were seated promptly. There is a variety of different seating available (from stools to booths to a lounge area). The overall aesthetic of this restaurant is beautiful -- from the seating area to the ornate bar to the cleanliness. All around, this place is awesome! We were staying at the hotel so it made sense to come here. We were definitely pleased with our choice! We ordered the halibut (delicious) and prawn scampi (equally great). Our server, Brook, was attentive, friendly, and helpful. He gave us plenty of time in deciding/didn't rush, offered suggestions, and was an overall pleasant waiter! The bartenders served up some awesome drinks too! For the sports lovers, there are a few large screen TVs playing multiple games. For those wanting to have a good time (raises hand), there is plenty of fun to be had at Jacks! Overall, we loved our stay at Portola Hotel which was accentuated by a wonderful meal at Jacks. Stopped in for lunch based on the good reviews from yelp. Definitely was not disappointed. This by far is the best clam chowder I've ate. It was creamy and full of flavor due to the fact that it was loaded with corn, crab, clams, potato, and red pepper. Calamari was tender and light. Dipping sauce was sweet. When asked if she was going to sit someone else next to us, she responded: "not for a while" then she sat another couple literally next to us in a short while. The food mediocre for the price. Enjoyed a few drinks and then dinner with family while staying at the Portola. Our service was very good and the food was too. He the rice bowl with a piece of grilled Salmon on top that was very good. The veggies, rice and tofu dish had very good flavor and the Salmon was grilled pretty rare which is how I like it. The ambiance is a bit weird as you are in a hotel lobby with higher ceilings, but is nicer at the bar. The food exceeded our expectations for a hotel restaurant. We stayed at Portola Hotel for a quick weekend getaway. The atmosphere was lovely with tables amid trees next to the lobby's atrium. My husband and I ordered the clam chowder and filet mignon. There was a "share" portion for both, so we went ahead and ordered this option. The clam chowder was great and the steak was cooked beautifully and tasted delicious, but we were taken aback when the server arrived with our dishes all on one plate and in one bowl. We ended up having to ask for another plate and bowl to split the dishes ourselves. I thought this would have been done beforehand as having to shuffle food from one plate to another is inconvenient. Our 10 year old ordered pepperoni pizza from the children's menu and was less than impressed. She ate one slice and was done. She's not a picky eater by any means, but said she didn't enjoy the sauce. I took a bite, and it tasted like sad pasta sauce smothered on flatbread. Not completely awful, but not great. The service wasn't exceptional. There was no hostess to greet us upon arrival. Our waiter was not attentive or friendly. He wasn't outright rude, but he just came across as absent and like he could care less about our experience. There were no table touches or anything to elevate our dining, but the food was tasty. We've enjoyed having lunch and dinner at Jack's Monterey over the past few months since its renovation and totally enjoyed it, both for client meetings and just relaxation. Last Sunday, a friend and I decided to try the Jacks Monterey Brunch and absolutely loved our experience! We ordered delicious blintzes, chicken and waffles and eggs benedict. Everything was flavorful, fresh and sustainable. Accompanied by our caffe lattes, we were good to go stroll a festival in the Custom House Plaza. The service was excellent and attentive, from our waitress, Rebecca, to Dylan, the Manager at the restaurant. The ambiance is so spacious, comfortable and airy with the gorgeous trees and high ceilings as opposed to more claustrophobic, cramped restaurants we've tried. The validated parking was appreciated too. We will definitely be back and look forward to trying the earlier breakfast with the bottomless mimosas, too.
