My wife and I have been trying different breakfast restaurants in Kahalui and Wailuku. Jack's Inn is one of our favorite local breakfast eateries in Kahalui. I ordered fried rice and Maui hotdog. My son just finished his soccer class and I was haaaangry. I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to finally check out Jack's Inn. & Thaaaank goodness I did! It's located in kind of a weird spot.... Kahului Industrial, right off Alamaha St, near Ace Hardware. Don't blink or you might just miss it! They have a small parking lot shared with other business, but you should still easily find a spot. There's a "Please Wait To Be Seated Sign" on the door, but after standing there for a minute or two, we started to think we could just seat ourselves. Sure enough one of the workers (the owner maybe?) started waving at us from the cash register to sit down. I love roast pork & one of my friends mentioned it being one of her favorite dishes here, so I was set on that. My husband got the corned beef hash & eggs and we got the kiddo dry mein. The roast pork was seasoned perfectly, tender, and had just the right amount of gravy. The dry mein was probably one of the best dry meins we've had on the island and it came with little tasty bits of pork. My little guy couldn't keep his hands out of the bowl and kept asking for more noodles! The corned beef hash & eggs were pretty standard... good enough. We waited around for a bit thinking we could ask for our check, but when you're done, you go up to the cash register to pay. Overall, my husband & I really enjoyed our meal and so did our son. The service is friendly and the restaurant is pretty much as "Mom & Pop" as it gets. The interior isn't the best, but for some reason it reminded me of my hanabata days and made me feel really, really nostalgic. I can't believe I've lived on Maui most of my life and pass by this restaurant every single week and have only now tried it. It was 1990-something when my friend told me we were going to eat at Jack's Inn. Fine. After we walked in, I walked right out. There were more condiments on the wall than in the containers. So why the change of heart? Because I'm on a mission to find Maui's best saimin now that Archie's in Wailuku has closed. ATMOSPHERE: They're located in a small warehouse-looking building in the Kahului Industrial Park on the west side of Alamaha between Hanamau & Hanakai. Seating is a mix of tables and booths in a very casual setting made bright and even a bit cheery with lots of natural light via the plentiful windows. Condiments were all in their containers this time, thankfully! MENU: Breakfast selections, local-style plate lunches, saimin, dry mein, burgers, sandwiches, simple salads. FOOD: Super Saimin - $10.50 Pictures from fellow Yelpers made this an easy decision, thank you! The noodles were cooked perfectly chewy and were possibly the local Iwamoto brand which are a thicker-style noodle. The clear broth was a traditional porky-vegetable saimin flavor, not overly salty and served searing hot. An abundance of toppings included a hard boiled egg, broccoli & cauliflower florets, kamaboko (fish cake), julienned carrots, two homemade pork-filled won tuns, super tender bits of shredded pork and green onions. Generous portion size. Not the best bowl I've had but it's definitely in my top five. Roast Pork - $8.95 (regular size) The Yelp photos of this dish are a mixed bag with some looking mouth-watering and some unadorned, the latter of which I received. While I prefer shredded pork, these were sliced. Most of the pieces were tender with just a few tough parts and a low amount of fat. The medium-colored gravy was tasty and the two scoops of rice were cooked perfectly. The side of buttered corn went well with the dish but was way too minimal. Come to find out they forgot my macaroni salad that was supposed to come with the plate. Dry Mein - $5.50 (mini) I did takeout for this as I wanted to compare them to Maui's infamous Sam Sato's. While Jack's version doesn't come with any bean sprouts or soup for dipping, it tasted similar, meaning it's lightly-seasoned, so I still had to add a generous amount of shoyu and black pepper to satisfy my tastebuds. The roast pork topping was more generous and isn't a char siu-style. Fry Rice Special - $6.50 Their version of fried rice was okay in the flavor department and far from the best I've had. The only meat mixed in was diced ham so a lack of salt and seasoning were very apparent. The rice was topped with a single egg (cooking style of your choice) and a red "Maui hot dog" accompanied. Affordable and forgettable. Corned Beef Patty - $3.25 Mmm, this was good! While I love it canned, this one is fresh. The patty was thick, seasoned perfectly and didn't fall apart while eating it. A lather of plain old ketchup made it even better. SERVICE: A "wait to be seated" sign was posted but it turned out to be a seat yourself deal. Being that it was my first time here and the place was full, I waited. A lady sitting at one of the booths who I thought was a customer but was actually a worker on break, asked if I was a party of one, in which I replied "yes". She said "Come sit here" while pointing to the seat across her. Confused, I reconfirmed "Here?" and pointing to the seat. "Yes" she replied, and said her break was done and that she'd be leaving soon. LOL! That's the kind of place this is; from-the-heart, mom and pop service, and I loved it! When you're ready to pay, take note of your table number and head to the cashier. TIP: Open for breakfast and lunch, closed Sundays, cash only. OVERALL: Clean interior, nice menu, good saimin, friendly service. Definitely a return! read more

This was our plan B after driving all the way to Sam Sato's and they were closed. Yelp's hours of operation stated they were open. jack's came highly recommended from our friend. No wait, open for dine in, Had 2 loco moco's and 2 corn beef hash loco loco, with a sweet bread French toast to share. It was all delicious and we left very satisfied! Just one small thing ... as a coffee drinker, their coffee had kick, punch. Not sure if it's the brand of coffee, too much water or measurements were off. I was super happy with this choice and since it was my first time to Maui, thank you Yelpers for this suggestion! My fried saimin was good. Cabbage, pork, saimin...just so yummy and it has been a while since I've had it or made it. I got the mini size and it was a perfect "snack" before my real breakfast ;) The banana pancakes were SO good! Banana slices right inside and cooked perfectly with that heavenly butter melting all over it. (Literally my favorite thing to put on pancakes!) I added regular maple syrup to the mix and it was a wrap! Gone in 60 seconds type of eating LOL Omelet was ham/green onion mix. Fried rice had bacon. This is the spot! if you like those old diner type resturants(minus a counter) no frills no fancy just good food family owned and operated and we love the boys that run it! Cheeseburger deluxe, fluffy pancakes(some of the best on island), miso soup, saimin BLT (super simple not a ton of piled up bacon which is how I like my blts!) hashbrowns on point.... my pops always goes with some special, something smothered in gravy! If you're looking for local food served in a local way, this place is it! Don't let the looks of the place fool you! I've had the dry mein, roast pork, and even the loco Moco. All ono!!!! And huge servings! There have been many times when I'm the only hoale there, but they welcome us with smiles and good food. Seriously one of our favorite places to eat on the island. The last few times we've been there it's been take-out only as they haven't had he staff to wait tables. Spent the day on Maui and told my Mom (a Maui native) to take me to all the favorite local haunts - this was her selection for breakfast: a hole in the wall restaurant with delicious food and friendly faces. Food: 2/2 - I got the banana pancake sandwich, which was 2 huge pancakes with large slices of banana baked into the pancakes as well as 2 vienna sausages (my pick for my breakfast meats) and 1 egg on the side. CASH ONLY, in a small industrial plaza, this little hidden gem in Kahului is an easy and super inexpensive spot to grab some good food where all the local uncles and aunties do. We went around 10am and the place was pretty full with a couple of tables still open. We tried the loco moco, corned beef moco, and corned beef hash. Each dish came out with two huge scoops of rice and a large portion of meat with an egg. Big portions between $7-$8 each. The food took a little longer to come out, but considering it's a small local diner I wasn't all that surprised nor did I really mind because it gives you a chance to chat with whoever you're eating with or read your newspaper. I grew up on Maui and although I didn't eat here often, my parents and grand parents ate here almost every weekend. It's been many years since my last visit and now during this COVID pandemic, I try to support local companies which is the reason for my most recent visit. Seating is limited due to social distancing so we were asked to wait outside until a table was open. We weren't given a time but we waited anyway. The waiter took our order while we waited outside so it would be ready by the time we got to our table. It worked out great. Our food came just a few minutes after we sat. I ordered the ham & cheese omelet with toast and a mini saimin on the side. My other half ordered a large wonton mein. We shared a short stack (2 pancakes) and fries. Everything was delicious and the serving size was just right. Although we didn't finish everything, we finished most. The service was fine. No issues. BREAKFAST Jacks Inn has been around for 30 years, and I can see why. This spot is easy to miss so keep your eyes pealed. When you walk in, there is a sign asking for you to wait to be seated. However, after about a minute of waiting, some of the staff who were sitting in a booth waved us in and welcomed us to sit where ever we would like. I am a fan of Bloody Marys, and unfortunately they do not sell alcohol here. I ordered a Large Fruit Punch ($2.25) instead. I was torn between a few breakfast options, but then my buddy noticed one of their specials. For $8.50, they had a Corned Beef Hash Loko Moko. I ordered mine with fried rice. So now I basically got corned beef hash, fried rice, and loco moco all in one dish. I was skeptical on the quality due to such a low price. However, the corned beef hash was clearly homemade and quite excellent. We were both thrilled with this find today. Hopefully this is always a special they have. He also ate a Half Order of Kim Chee Fried Rice ($8.50) and it was HUGE. I really thought it was a mistake and that they gave him a full order but I was wrong. He said it was average in flavor, which isn't a bad thing. It wasn't amazing and wasn't terrible. The service was great. No Kama'aina discount available, but with how amazingly affordable everything was, there is no need for any discounts. Please note that Jacks Inn accepts only cash. When you are finished eating, walk up to the cash register and tell them your table number and they will ring you up there. While I sometimes complain about places not accepting credit cards since I usually do not carry cash on me, I completely support Jacks Inn being a cash only place. This decision obviously helps them to keep their costs so low. Breakfast hours are 5:30 - 2 Mon through Fri, 6 - 1 Sat, and closed Sun. As far as local breakfast places, Jacks Inn is legit. This was a pleasant surprise and I am already looking forward to returning. read more
